In soccer games, you play two halves of 45 minutes each relatively uninterrupted; there are pauses but they're usually quite brief, so you don't have the stop-start that will stretch a 15-minute quarter into forty minutes of game time. Instead, when the action does stop for an injury or a goal celebration or similar, the referee marks the time and adds it onto the end, so you often finish the 45-minute half and then play five to ten extra minutes to make up for the delays.
At the end of regular play between Roma and Lecce yesterday, Roma was down 1-0 and the commentators, at least in English, were already calling the game and talking about what losing it would mean for Roma going forward (they really really needed to win this game). The referee added five minutes onto regular play for delays.
At one minute past ninety, Roma player Sardar Azmoun made his first goal with the team to tie the game. At four minutes past ninety, Roma player Romelu Lukaku made a goal to win.
Mad lads and their Tired Dad got a whole-ass, very much needed win in five minutes, after the game was realistically over.
