The tunnel to Hogsmeade was dim and damp, but it did little to dull the spirits of the four boys sneaking through it. James Potter was leading the way.

“Honeydukes first, obviously. Then Zonko’s,” he said, turning back to look at the others. “And if we’re quick, maybe we can-”

“Get caught because you’re too loud?” Peter Pettigrew interrupted, rolling his eyes as he stepped over a loose stone. “Honestly, Prongs, do you want Filch to hear us?”

“Relax, Wormtail,” James shot back. “You’re just bitter because you tripped the last time we came through here.”

“That was one time,” the shorter boy retorted. “And I only tripped because you were too busy monologuing about Quidditch to hold your wand properly.”

“I wasn’t monologuing,” the deer animagus argued.

“You were,” Sirius Black said. “Wormtail’s got a point.”

“Thank you, Padfoot. Glad someone appreciates my brilliance.”

“Don’t let it go to your head.”

Remus, walking quietly next to Sirius, let out a chuckle. “We should all focus before Wormtail starts taking credit for leading us here.”

“Someone has to take the credit,” Peter said, smirking. “You lot are too busy flirting to notice where we’re going.”

The werewolf’s head snapped up, his cheeks flushing slightly. “We’re not flirting.”

“Could’ve fooled me,” the rat animagus muttered.

“Leave them alone,” James said, eyes sparkling. “They think they’re subtle.”

Sirius scoffed. “Subtlety is overrated.” He glanced at his boyfriend, grinning. “Right, Moony?”

Remus didn’t respond, instead pretending to examine the uneven ground ahead. Peter smirked and whispered to the messy-haired boy, “That’s not a denial.”

The tunnel sloped upward, and Sirius turned back to look at the group, the map in one hand. “All clear up ahead. Once we get there, it’s every man for himself.”

“Oh, absolutely not,” Peter said, striding forward. “I’m not carrying all your sweets back. Last time I nearly put my back out because Prongs here wanted sixty Sugar Quills and three dozen Chocolate Frogs.”

“Hey, I didn’t hear you complaining when I shared,” James shot back, grinning.

He shrugged. “Fair. But I’m not a pack mule. Carry your own weight this time.”

Sirius nudged Remus lightly. “You’re just going for boring chocolate again, aren’t you?”

The lanky boy raised an eyebrow. “And what are you going for? Exploding Bonbons and something else potentially lethal?”

“Exactly,” the noiret said, grinning. “Adds excitement to life.”

“Why am I not surprised?” Remus muttered.

“Boring chocolate is a waste,” Peter interjected, smirking. “But at least it won’t knock you out like those Fizzing Whizzbees almost did to Padfoot last month.”

“That was an experiment,” Sirius said loftily.

“A failed experiment.” 

James clapped his hands together. “All right, lads. Let’s go! I’m paying, though.”

i used to answer every single comment i got, honestly, unless it came by years after i posted it-- the only reason i dont as much anymore is because it gets REALLY overwhelming for me to respond to everyone after the initial barrage 😅😅 the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak etc etc. but i do read every comment and appreciate them SO SO MUCH, and whenever i find one particularly moving or want to just reassure people im still working on something i'll respond to those :]

not counting the wips that just never got finished and left off before their main shit could resolve, id say at times so self destructive (BNHA)-- i mean i LITERALLY ended it with izuku potentially dying 😭😭😭😭

tbh i dont think i write happy endings so much as i write hopeful, bittersweet, or open-ended ones-- i tend to like catharsis more than fluff when it comes down to it. but out of my fluff fics i think honey it's starting to storm (HC) is one of the genuinely sweetest ive written. my runner-ups on that would probably be when the smoke does finally pass (TMA) and or we could just have conversation (MSA) :]

Do you write crossovers?

not typically, and ive never published any, but i am definitely not immune to them 😂😂😂😂 i think my most niche crossover ive actually written (never to see the light of day) was a Nine Lives of Chloe King and Supernatural fic that was the definition of self-indulgent rot. only a little less niche than that was a Mortal Instruments and Supernatural crossover (theres a running theme here lol) lying in snippets on an ancient google doc in my oldest gmail acct. reread that one recently and its shockingly coherent for being written in like. 2016. id even call it decent (though theres a lot id change up if i were writing it now)

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

idk if it'd be considered hate but once i wrote a fic inspired by someone else's when i was very new to ao3, let them know (i didnt know about the "inspired by" option back then), and they got mad at me in my comments section because in their words, "its better than mine" 😭😭😭😭💥💥💥💥💥💥

like my pal karliahs im gonna rip these from the comments ive received 😅😅😅 but id definitely say imagery is my strongest skill!! i have a very strong imagination, and tend to see fic scenes as movie scenes in my head which i then transcribe into written format. id like to say im also really skilled at characterization and realistic dialogue that captures character voices very well!! and frankly i just love emotional realism so much i cant NOT write it, its always leaking into everything i do

What are your writing weaknesses?

i tend to get a little too funky and abstract with my descriptions sometimes-- that can work for some scenes, but grounding everything so that it feels more real and makes actual sense to the reader is something i often have to do on the second, third, and final passes

got a bit of time tonight, so i want to ramble about my boy Iida Tenya, and my own thoughts and feelings about the manga's ending.

this is long, LONG, and rambly and perhaps filled with grammatically incorrect sentences, and i dislike capitalization, so click read more at your peril!!!!

as an Iida fan, the ending of the manga is a huge, HUGE let down. i'm actually expecting to be disappointed tbh, with the slow and steady pushing of Iida as a character off to the side to make way for the Midoriya-Bakugou-Todoroki power trio.

and you know, i get it! thematically, they are the inheritors of All Might and his spirit of Heroism. and they deserve the spotlight too, given how much they grew as characters vs the start of the story.

i'm not a big Bakugou fan (tho i find him v funny at times, like how you'd find a rabid racoon funny) , but his character arc is very satisfying for me as a reader. love that even in the end he's still a lil shit ahha! but the way he initiated and funded the whole armor thing for Midoriya means he's still trying to atone for all the shit he did in their past. which! good on him tbh.

Todoroki, my sweet summer child, has been abused physically, and emotionally suffered enough all his life, and i'm so glad he's on the path of healing now, and also away from his dad's shadow too.

Midoriya… hmm, personally, i would have preferred for him to have remained a teacher instead of going back to heroics. it would have been a great call back to the original premise of the story that questions "can a boy with no super power become a hero too?", because the answer will be "yes!" because you know damn well he'll be looked up to by every class he handles. and given his expertise upon analyzing quirks, think of how valuable his battle advice and tactics must be, especially to kids who are just beginning to understand their quirks!

generations of student heroes, learning from his battle/fight strategies, his ideals on heroism, and most importantly his kindness and desire to help people, and then putting those values in practice in the real world. wouldn't that be a great way on how you begin to establish a truly peaceful society?

but… Iida. i think... Iida's been left behind by the story by the end of it.

i almost didn't include this pic bc it offends me so much. like why is my boy banished off to the corner!? HE DESERVES A SPOT ON THAT COUCH TOO GDI!!

bias aside, you cannot tell me that Iida's contribution to story isn't IMMENSE. he is very much essential to Midoriya's growth as a hero and Todoroki's path to healing (and Bakugou's... as a classmate and a non-dear friend lmaoooo) that neither would be possible without Iida's presence and influence.

Iida (and Uraraka) being the first to offer friendship to a very insecure Midoriya, and how important Iida reaching out his hand again to Midoriya was again later on when Midoriya needed help the most; Iida reminding Todoroki of himself when Iida's going down a dark and dangerous path away from his ideals, saving him, and then being saved in turn, because of how well they relate to and understand each other. Iida being the foundation of their entire class, the way he's offered steadfast support to every one of them.

just... sighhhhh...... we didn't even hear his graduation speech as a senior? i like Mirio well enough, and i also get that the war's just happened before they graduated which is a bummer sure and that needs to be addressed, but i feel like we also deserve parting words from OUR student representative. it would have been a nice send off too to the Class A as we know them, by having their class president acknowledge their efforts and hard work.

i've mentioned before how utterly wasteful i find it that Hori didn't flesh out the Iida family, as a foil against the Todoroki's.

like you have these boys from two families, similarly deeply rooted in the hero culture but with such highly contrasting upbringing. on one hand you have the Todoroki's, led by the no. 2 hero of all of Japan, who bc of ambition, had abused and traumatized all members of his small, nuclear family. and on the other, a multi-generational family of heroes, not high enough in the rankings, but successful enough to be known and respected by most of the population (also they're def super loaded too, like they have a damn BUILDING with their signature hero name!!!)

Tensei's presence in the story was underutilized too. here you have a well-known, well-liked hero who was established to have a team of sidekicks who work well together (as per Vigilantes). how interesting it would have been to have Tensei (and the Iida fam) to appear again in the story just as the hero society is collapsing? this family who made it their identity and business to help and save people as quickly and efficiently as possible? like... how could they have dealt with the fallout of the common people no longer trusting them and being actively hostile against known heroes?

knowing what we do about Tensei though, i doubt this will stop him. he'll for sure still be trying to help out people in need, even if he's already retired and while wheelchair-bound. which i also think is super unfair btw like we have Mirko with her super cool prosthetics, why can't Tensei have robot-assisted legs too??? and that's considering the Iida family who seem to primarily have mobility/tech hybrid based quirks, for sure they must have a team of tech experts specializing on mobility on hand as well????

imagine Tensei calling Tenya up one day saying he's got a surprise for his bb bro! and Tenya comes over all curious and stuff, and then Tensei greets him standing up with prosthetics, with a design that is inspired by Tenya's own leg-Engine quirk. then Tensei goes to explain that even if Tenya keeps saying that Tensei is his hero, Tensei would also like to declare that the new Ingenium is his hero, whom he'd like to honor with the design, and that someone he'd hope to work with in the future, even as a civilian background support. and in a few moments after that sinks in, Tenya will just bawl his eyes out (and then Tensei joins in in a bit bc let's be real these brothers adore each other v much)

and also..... i keep thinking what a reunion it would have been if Stain himself could have witnessed that "altruism" is well and truly alive, not only from the younger, but also from the elder Ingenium, both of whom he'd failed to kill?

anyways, back to Iida Tenya. (i'll use Tenya now to refer to him, since i'll also mention Tensei a lot.)

i mentioned Tensei and the Iida fam first, bc somehow i thought we'd see a glimpse of them again before the manga ends. like an acknowledgement that Tenya had indeed proven himself worthy of the Ingenium name. wishful thinking, considering Inko (main character's mom!!!!!!) wasn't even given the chance to comfort and acknowledge her son (the main character!!!!!) as a hero as to what he has gone through to save their whole society!

anyways, so the last we see of Tenya, he's working with others, touring elementary schools, and spreading awareness and expanding quirk counseling headed by Uraraka. it's a noble pursuit yes, and beneficial too, if it could help kids with misunderstood quirks like Toga. but i can't help but feel Tenya's talents and skills could have been better put elsewhere.

like... rebuilding the Team IdaTen for example.

now, everything from this point on is all wishful thinking on my part, as an Iida Tenya fan who loves his character and story arc, and thinks he deserves a better ending.

Team IdaTen, as per Vigilantes manga, comprises of Sidekicks working under Ingenium, and their credo is (not verbatim, sorry) "to come to people's aid as quickly as possible". And this is a credo that Tenya has taken to heart, and is the core of his heroism. As the inheritor of the Ingenium name, isn't it a logical conclusion to have him step up as the new leader of the team?

in an Iida-led manga, maybe Tenya's challenge for this is how to prove himself as a capable leader amongst his brother's veteran Sidekicks. For sure they already know Tenya as their former leader's baby brother, but how about as a leader? maybe some of them won't be able accept Tenya as a replacement, being too loyal or different from his older brother.

or... is there stil even Team IdaTen? maybe many of them quit when Tensei retired, maybe some got disillusioned and quit too during the collapse of hero society. and for sure many of them also died or got injured during the war.

Tenya's goal could be to search and recruit his own Team IdaTen, a team which specializes as first responders. like if there's any disaster or accident, you'd be sure Team IdaTen is first on the scene!! they'd be helping who they can, and relay info to other responding heroes and other pros.

hmmm..... maybe that can explain Tenya's presence in Uraraka's advocacy to improve the quirk counseling? maybe he's recruiting potential, future Team IdaTen members. he'd be on the look out for speed-based, or mobility-based quirks, but would also be welcoming of other types for sure! the only important thing is their desire to help people and that they agree to the Ingenium credo, which is saving people takes priority out of everything.

and yknow, maybe this is also his way to help curb Vigilantism, which is another problematic issue in a hero society, and help set people on a more lawful path into becoming proper heroes. like how Tensei tried to recruit Koichi after seeing his potential and desire to help without having the means. it would have been a great callback to the values Tensei had inspired on Tenya, which he would then be able to pass on to a new set of heroes/sidekicks he'd lead as a team.

okk i'm running out of steam now. i will just continue being sad over Iida's wasted storylines for the foreseeable future. ( ; ^ ; ) </3

I am LOVING complex Dream.

She (or he other times) is often overlooked and i honestly hate that. I love Nightmare, he is one of my favourite characters EVER, but i do not like that Dream gets overlooked because of him.

ESPECIALLY when people write Dream as a woman, because women, (in all media most of the time) are ALWAYS overlooked for their male counter parts and have little to no agency.

It drives me insane when characters get over shadowed. Nothing wrong with having favourites, i do a lot of favoritism in my own work without even realizing. But writers should think of every character as an actual person.

Anyway- ramble aside- i LOVE what you are doing. Keep up the good work and have fun with what you do hun!!💜

All my characters are my favorites tbh- and of course if you have a favorite character, that’s fine! But if you have characters you don’t like working on or fleshing out which leaves them dry, that’s not gonna earn you a good character

women also deserve to be shown in more complex situations without such harsh judgement towards their bad actions. For those who hate RV!Dream- keep in mind that Nightmare has killed many due to his grief and though he had a reason, it’s still a horrible act. Don’t just come for Dream simply b/c she doesn’t trust him or want to be around him or bc she doesn’t fit the perfect vision of a kindhearted Dream Sans

brother crab's winter 2024 parting thoughts: majo to yajuu

GUIDEAU MY MOST BELOVED SHE/HE/THEY GUYGIRL OF ALL TIME I LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I MUST ONCE AGAIN STRESS THAT THESE ARE THE SAME GUY:

ok so first

banging beginning and banging finale to this season, the show as a whole as some really fascinating worldbuilding (the most fascinating of which we only got to in the final minutes of the final episode) so i really hope we get another season sooner or later

the middle was a little less memorable to me but at no point did i feel overly disappointed or bored, it wasn't always outstanding but it was consistently enjoyable and entertaining to me

but now back to guideau

GUIDEAUUUUUUUUU WHAT A CHARACTER!!! i will be using his pronouns interchangeably bc it is what she deserves uwu (tho tbh i do not think guideau would ever give a single fuck about pronouns and that is a huge part of what i love about them)

it's almost a shame that one of my favorite guideau scenes only came in the last episode, he's pissed at a witch who fed her some stew that she can't stop thinking about and wanting more of

so she confronts the witch all like "UNDO THE SPELL YOU PUT ON ME" and the guy he's traveling with has to gently explain to them like "guideau... do you think you maybe just... liked the soup..."

speaking of the guy

looove his eyes, love the way eyes in general are drawn in this series in fact. also love his voice morikawa-san absolutely killed it and i'm thrilled we will continue to hear him this season in the omegaverse anime (lol but no seriously)

ashaf is overall such a striking character to me, not just in terms of his appearance but his whole demeanor and everything. i feel like we haven't even scratched the surface of who he really is or why he's like that yet, so i hope we get more story to flesh that out

i think ashaf and guideau work so well together as the main pair (not necessarily in a romantic way, bit more on that later) because their personalities are just perfectly complementary. it made the middle... i dunno, detour? to phanora feel a bit, i dunno, just misplaced. i actually really enjoyed phanora and johan too, but their story just felt more like an ova and less like it belonged smack in the middle of this season? anyway

absolutely obsessed with the final scene of the season where ashaf says there's still one thing he wants to teach guideau, and that that's love. LIKE HELLO??? ironically this actually made me ship them romantically less, because i really enjoy the idea of this being a sweeping notion of love. nothing so constrained as romantic love, but love for the world, for others, for soup! and for guideau themself

i would love to see more of this animated because the cast is amazing, but if it doesn't get a continuation i'll definitely pick up the manga (probably once it's finished... hopefully it'll be finished...... we'll see)

i have mixed feelings about Bridgeton s3 as a whole and while I think some moments were really good:

Pen and Eloise reconciliation and Eloise becoming more mature, by not seeing things so clear-cut

I liked the ending ball with the butterflies

Pen making amends with her mother and inviting her back into her life. All of the scenes with her mom and her were actually really good.

Cressida scenes were all so good, I enjoyed her growth

I enjoyed the family moments. Especially Violet's struggle to accept Lord Kilmartin but eventually accepted bc she valued her child's happiness over her own opinions

the fact that it's benedict's season next season

there are subjects that weren't fleshed out well that I'm frustrated about:

how they handled the conversation on gender and female identity: the show's description of it is a little surface level tbh and they did nothing to show how cruel women were treated [other than being forced to marry old men] that they could have expanded upon. I dislike how they tossed Cressida aside and pictured her as the villain when she was absolutely the victim. Yes, blackmailing someone is bad, but she was desperate and she did not deserve the ending the season gave her and it would have been a better writing direction to focus on the theme of forgiveness, by having Penelope, who was seeking forgiveness in the end too, to extend forgiveness to Cressida and offering a way to escape her woes and exposing Lord Greer and giving her some money to escape and find a new life elsewhere as an act of mercy. yk, treat others the way you want to be treated.

how they handled the conversation on privilege: they were almost getting somewhere when Cressida put Colin in his place about how she can't afford to choose who she marries/ she has never felt the privilege of having a loving parent, a fact that I think Penelope would relate to. The fact that Colin still talks this way in EPISODE 8, about "how her father will understand", in the LAST episode made me wince. Don't even get me started on his character development.

Colin's apology to Penelope: he didn't really apologize. I wish he had acknowledged what he said to her in anger. He keeps bringing up Marina (who lied to him but he seemed to let that go), to Pen and memorizing a list of her "crimes" until episode 8. I just don't buy his apology of him asking her for a dance after he said things like "I don't know [if i can still love you]", "I will never forgive you", or "you made think I was underserving of your love" [which he absolutely was, this man embarrassed her publicly and didn't even want to know why she started writing whistledown, smh], "you entrapped me" (?).

this is not a hate on anyone involved in the show, especially the actors, we don't hate here, these are just my thoughts.

I love the actors and there was a lot of heart put in the show, but i hope in future seasons there will be a lot more thematic direction driving their writing so it reflects why the show resonates with so many people which is the boundary pushing messages about social issues that are still relevant today.

How I feel about this character: BEST CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE. she's chronically late, she talks to statues, she's a bad liar, she's a collector, she's horribly insecure and is such a sweetheart and is the heart of the whole movie 💚

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Ikaris (I love tragedy 😔), Dane bc she deserves a nice normal guy and he clearly loves her!! (or at least they think he's normal-), Thena and Gilgamesh in an ot3 because I thought of it ONCE and couldn't let it go

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I mean I could say all of the Eternals because I love their relationships but I'll be specific. Phastos! They are besties to me, I cannot be convinced otherwise. Also Druig. I'm pretty neutral on Druig but I love his relationship with Sersi, he clearly respects her and listens to her!!

My unpopular opinion about this character: I mean just the fact that she's my fave is kinda unpopular already. people don't really care about her :(

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish she could have had a more solid leadership arc. Like she's clearly afraid to take control, everyone makes jokes about Ikaris not being the leader which probably isn't good for her self esteem (Sprite outright says she doesn't care about Ajak choosing Sersi instead), and in the end none of that is really resolved. I wish her internal arc had been fleshed out some more and gotten a more satisfying ending of everyone looking to her as leader (this is why it should have been a show and not a movie!!!)

Anakin

How I feel about this character: honestly my favourite character potentially from the whole star wars series, DEFINITELY from the prequels. I love a tragedy and Anakin Skywalker is the definition of tragedy.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Padme, obviously. I've read some Rex/Anakin fics too but tbh I never watched the clone wars so I can't say I actually ship it.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Obi Wan is his tragic brother/father figure and I love it. Also, again from someone who hasn't watched the clone wars but read fics, Ahsoka and also his clone trooper squad.

My unpopular opinion about this character: This is more an unpopular opinion about the fandom I guess but. Anakin was not misunderstanding the Jedi teachings when he talked about love. Love is forbidden for Jedi, that's literally the whole point of the story? It's not just attachment or obsessive love, it's all love. I don’t know if I have a least favourite thing, most of the issues Sonia has are all writing issues independent of her character, but things like how every once and a while they portray her as suuuper naive when logically she would have known better (looking at you, scene with Teruteru when Hajime is first exploring the island)

Everyone says that drew has chemistry with everyone...i kinda disagree. I watched The Other Zoey and as much as i liked it the chemistry between Katherine and drew was not hitting at all. And the background score was not it at all, I was actually fast forwarding for all the romantic scenes with music cuz that was just tacky. And i feel like the final kiss was like...meh. I love the character Zach tho, he is so fuckng cute but I feel like the art direction and the overall aesthetic and the chemistry was not up to the mark. I was expecting more like"to all the boys i loved before" level cuteness but nope it was...ok ig. Compared to that, fiona and drew seem so intense on obx like the banter and the sexual tension is very palpable between sofia and rafe. even in scenes like the one second WHERE SOF PUTS HER HEAD ON RAFES SHOULDER like I felt that chemistry was chemistryfying.

Hello, I am here to excitedly rave about Only You Darling and shower you in well-deserved compliments. Anybody else reading this, stop if you haven't read Only You Darling as there will be SPOILERS.

First of all, your writing is brilliant, I wish I could come up with plots like you do. I have so many fics that I start writing and then I don't know how to get from A to B or what should happen next and just give up.

I have read Only You Darling (and also What The Body Wants, the whole concept of that fic >>>) twice now, and I'm sure I'll read it again in the future. My first read was a wild ride, I was so invested, I thought what if it's Yeonjun and Beomgyu but nah, then I when Soobin came into the picture I was sure it was Soobin and then it was Beomjun! Every time I thought i had it figured out, you had me doubting myself. I loved all the twists and turns and the way I was so stressed after everything went down and the reader was living in that house, the imagery that you created was amazing. I have to say that it's the best fic I've read on this site. Hands down. I don't think I've read such a well planned and fleshed out fic in maybe a decade (not to show my age haha), after I was done reading I felt as if I'd just watched a movie. I don't even get through thriller novels, I always get bored with the pacing or the writing, but you had me in the palm of your hand.

I'm sure I have more thoughts, but right now they're just a blurred mess of excitement and awe. Thank you for sharing your work and making me excited about reading fics again. I am slowly making my way through the rest of your stuff, I'm sure I will be back to word-vomit on you about other stories in the future!

He's repeatedly caused the end of the world, he's the reason this happened at all, he admits he can't/doesn't know how to stop himself from destroying everything and hurting everyone, including himself. of course he's depressed. on top of that Allison, his biggest supporter and best friend, is incredibly mad at him to the point of venomously refusing to even attempt to reconcile (which understandble from Allison's perspective but yeah this is gonna make Viktor depresesd). Plus his childhood confidante and current "saving the world" expert is also advising anyone and everyone to not save the world.

also 7/10 because the rest of his family is still alive?? and he doesn't consider their vote (Klaus?? Allison kinda? even Ben and Lila???)

Luther

meh, not brilliant. he's going thru shit this season, he got kidnapped and none of his family came to help or even noticed, his sister/ex tries to/did assault him. Also he's probably the most consistent in following/helping Five so it makes some sense that Luther would give up once Five gives up. But also, he's previously bullied Five into doing things his way, or not giving up etc on at least 2 occasions, so he's not blindly following Five (which is also evident when he literally throws Five out of his way in s2).

4/10 because he's just figured out what he wants his future to look like and who he wants to spend it with and now he's giving literally all of that up?? he's bullied Five before (two fives incident) just egg him on some more too??)

Sloane

hate this but understandable. She's explicitly shown to love 3 things: Luther, travelling, and her family. Since her family is dead it's understandable that she'd be upset, depressed even suicidal. She's only seen grieving Jayme and Alphonso for a moment, then pushes away/avoids Ben, her last remaining family member, during her own wedding. She also grieves Luther with a lot more intensity and rage than any of her 5 dead siblings. and also at points talks about how she felt that her family was more of a front/business than a family. so while she does claim to love her family, we're not actually shown her doing much if any of that. Her other passion is travel, which is shown to be a long standing dream of hers and a big part of why she clicks with Luther (who is pretty well travelled nowadays) who understands and supports her dream. With the world ending there is no travel opportunities, so you'd think she would try and make her dream possible by saving the world (she even says she worries that there's nothing after death, so she can't live out her dream after she dies anyway). but no, she just does whatever Luther thinks. God I wish the sparrows were more fleshed out, even Sloane didn't get a lot going on.

5/10 because she should have at least been allowed to voice this instead of being "Luther's wife". or also like, actually show her character and mindset at all? she's more upset that Luther, who she's known for like 5 days died literal hours before the end times than any of her family dying when she thought she had the rest of her life ahead of her????? Sloane deserved better.

hate hate hate. he chooses this out of spite, to piss off Lila? I guess? Lila wants to fight for the world, and for her child and their future together with Diego. But Diego is annoyed that she won't remain behind in a dying world where death is imminent while he charges ahead. So Diego essentially says "you would rather fight for everybody's future, including our unborn child, instead of let me protect you. so i am going to doom all of us to die" which like what the fuck Diego??

2/10 because they get too carried away with making him the silly one, and forget that he actually has enough intelligence to understand that you shouldn't doom the whole world, including your gf and unborn child, over a petty domestic squabble for control.

The Umbrella Academy, season 3 finale, episode 9: The mid-episode vote makes no sense. It's a few hours before the end of the world and they don't want to take their ONE chance to save the universe??? Except for Five, with the future self story, everyone else doesn't have A SINGLE REASON for not trying to fight the end.

ok. thoughts on chucky s02e05

i get why people like scout/good chucky. and tbh i feel like if it had been given more time it would have been a great little exploration on morality and stuff. the baptism scene is so interesting and so good and i actually really enjoyed it, along with the scene in the bathroom with jake and scout/good chucky... but i really dont feel like its fully deserved. the idea of jake seeing his own little brothers innocence and playfulness in the doll is a good idea (theres also something interesting in how jake shifts his conflicted feelings from chuckys victims to chucky himself, with this being like a sequel to chucky-as-his-father in a way). but there is also the issue with me that scout/good chuckys shift was so strange to me, even in a series like this. bc how much of his personality was erased? he didnt remember killing people, he didnt remember anything. peoples identities are formed on the basis of memories and experiences. thats something i feel this season has dealt with in a more interesting way than it has tackled something like religion for example. the loss of identity in the undoing that comes with possession is now a sort of sickness felt by tiffany, by nica, by glen and glenda... and now chucky, in a much less painful way. and its linked with this idea i have that, well, the series/franchise treats him like an icon/mcguffin/flat cypher than as a character with any sort of vulnerabilities and sides. this isnt bad, i think, but it does make for a kinda hard shift when everything we know about him is erased. its weird to even call scout/good chucky a "chucky" beyond voice and looks. hes defined by violence, so thats why at least to me this just doesnt feel like him. i guess thats why jake can delude himself into thinking he has been "redeemed" or something.

and that links to me with the issue that i really feel for devon, and on a lesser degree with lexy, on this matter.... like its actively nasty to see jake (and really nadine too, though shes so off the loop that its hard to really make her responsable for anything tbh) bonding with the doll that killed devons closest family member. even if its not the same one, even if its supposedly reformed. the lack of understanding jake has for devons situation does really make me think that they should break up. so i do think their relationship has been well set enough for me to see this as a possibility to be concerned about. it doesnt change the fact that the root of the issue is a supposed "clockwork-orange-style" brainwashing that doesnt work as redemption/absolution when it literally erases the persons identity... but then we get into a matter of whats identity and if chucky is even a person at this point! like, shit!!!

and then we have all the stuff im sick of, with the people at the church who are so so uninteresting and so little fleshed out, which is such a waste... having lara jean chorostecki for three episodes and having her do the same stuff in each scene is so dull. sister catherine had promise but she hasnt developed as a character or have been revealed to have any interiority of any sort (in a nunnery context backstory is always really strong to know why theyre here in the first place, and just like with trevor and nadine we dont really get anything and i dont think we will), and her careless way of defying devon sawa priest (another extremely flat and boring character who feels like its repeating the same lines over and over and not moving anywhere) to me feels less like her standing up to real abuse of power and more like it being her first day on the job and not understanding how stuff is done in a catholic school.

and, finally, we have glen and tiffany. i have been wanting some real tiffany vulnerability and self awareness for a while (she has these flashes from time to time, that i feel are what makes her character have some actual weight beyond iconography and that lets jennifer tilly really Act in a dramatic way), and this is the closest i think ill get to that. her keeping jennifer tilly the character in a little cage to sign checks and take care of business, i dont know if its genius or really, really stupid. its shocking, which is sort of what this season feels like its trying to rely on more often than not. i was half hoping tiffany killed the doll to get rid of that loose end, but apparently we will have her around for a little longer. regardless, it does make some sense in that it clarifies that yeah, it was indeed a switch in the end of seed? and that the reason the possession of the body worked so well unlike nica!chucky is probably because the jennifer tilly character souls in the doll. anyways. i love seeing glen standing up for themself and its also so good to see them being pretty damn mature, contacting glenda as soon as possible about their shared past (i had a headcanon both of them shared dreams, so im happy to see that) and confronting tiffany (and their twin too! they literally told them off about killing someone!) about all the shit theyve been through. and i love to see tiff being a messy mom and maintaining that issue she has with being able to maintain relationships. shes immature and selfish and cruel and also loving and caring at the same time. i wish it had been pushed a little more, but this was better than nothing, i guess. glens little "its me" line was heartbreaking, and lachlan watson is already the definitive highlight of the season after just two episodes. and seeing tiffany rejecting, at least on a symbolic level, the jennifer tilly identity in favor of telling the truth and reconnecting with her children is the most emotionally fulfilling moment in the season since the devon/jake kiss in episode 1.

the thing is, the season has these few moments in which i can see it trying to be interesting beyond being fun, at least to the level of season 1. and i dont think it manages a good balance with it, which is such a damn pity for me when so much of what its trying to do is things that i had been wanting to see in previous installments of the franchise. and on another hand i get that its very hard to get the balance between horror comedy and honest drama... but idk. i had faith in it.

How I Feel About This Character:

Candace: P obvious but I love her to pieces. I think she's been misunderstood by a lot of the fandom and if you don't like her, you're wrong. I really relate to her as an older sister, and as someone who genuinely feels at times like she's not good enough for the people around her.

Jeremy: Only blonde boy I respect /j. No but as a character he's such a sweetheart, and I really believe he loves Candace with all his heart. Also Mitchell Musso as his VA? Could not have done better tbh.

Stacy: My underrated fav, I would die for her. She is my favorite recurring side character, I love her dynamics with literally every single character, and I will forever be salty at the fact that she was not utilized more in the show overall.

Romantic Ships:

Candace: Canderemy is the number one, but Candace/Stacy and Candace/Vanessa are close second and thirds. Also am fond of Candace/Stacy/Jeremy where Jeremy and Stacy are for the most part platonic but just both dating Candace and very chill with it.

Jeremy: I really only ship him with Candace tbh. We don't really see enough of his friends to see any potential chemistry between them.

Stacy: Actually love her and Coltrane together, I think they're cute. And obviously as a secondary I ship her and Candace. I also think she and Jenny would be a cute couple, but like...a casual relationship.

Brotp:

Candace: Candace and Stacy, full stop. But if we're not talking the other teens, I love??? Her and Buford's relationship, I think it's hilarious. She def considers him a little brother but like. Significantly more obnoxious than her own (in a loving way)

Candace: I like the idea of her becoming a lawyer. I know a lot of people rejected it because it came from AYA (ew), but it just makes??? So much sense for her character. Like trying to prove people wrong, finding evidence, research??? It's just right up her alley, it WORKS.

Jeremy: I like Jeremy and Candace together. I'm like...stunned that's an unpopular opinion in parts of the fandom, but I genuinely think he's a great boyfriend and that he and Candace have the healthiest relationship in the whole show (and one of the healthiest across all media tbh). I don't understand the people who don't like him, I really don't.

Stacy: Stacy is a more fleshed out and well rounded than almost any other recurring character in the show and the people who think she isn't haven't paid attention.

One Thing I Wish Had Happened:

Candace: I kind of wish, just once, she had been able to show her mom something the boys did (and not have it backfire on any of the kids). It's something that I think would have brought a little bit of closure to the show as a whole, and I really think Candace deserved to be believed after all that time. She also deserved an apology from her mom for all the things she said about her tbh.

Jeremy: I wish we could have seen his relationship with his band members more. I know he's obviously not one of the main characters, so we got to see him through Candace more often than not, but it still would have been fun to have a Jeremy-centric episode in a similar way we did to Stacy.

Stacy: I mean.....we've heard me rant about the Perry and Stacy plot more than I'm sure anyone wants to admit, so I'll pick a different one lol. But I wish we had gotten to see more of her heritage in the show. There were small little bits thrown in, like her eating with chopsticks, but it would have been nice to see Stacy take Candace and the boys to like...idk a cultural Japanese event in town or something. Very plausible within the realm of the show. And it would have made up for the.....hmm. the song in SBTY that like...looking back on is p cringe.

I personally find it odd that so many people dislike show Collin versus book Collin bc I find myself finding show Penelope a lot more unlikeable than book Pen.

Retreading the books, LW is so much more coy and sassy. I find LW in the show to be downright cruel and catty. I still haven’t forgiven Penelope for the Marina drama tbh. I just can’t imagine being willing to publicly ruin somebody’s life like that. She was willing to tell Collin directly about Marina being in love with somebody else so why not the baby? He would have kept that secret but I think Penelope was too afraid he’d marry her anyways and that’s just so unforgivably selfish to me.

Like damn I know we’re in the ladies villain era but to me the Marina and Eloise things just really change her character on a fundamental level that makes her less interesting to me. I’m all for ladies making mistakes and having dark sides but I think the problem is that the show hasn’t shown me enough of her good sides to make her feel two dimensional to me. Banking on my sympathies for characters who are “wallflowers” can only last so long and I need them to start showing her with some positive qualities bc right now it’s not it.

In contrast I think they did this with Kate beautifully. Really showed her love and devotion to her sister and how that kind of spiraled into the mess it did. How the combination of pride, devotion, loyalty and stubbornness (as well as Anthony’s flaws of course) really kind of made this mess. It really helped me root for them and feel the pain for all involved.

i mean... most people dislike show!pen too, lol. i know personally i've ranted to my friends about while i am enjoying what they're doing romantically with show!polin, individually those characters aren't the same ones i loved in the books. for better, but for most people, for worse.

i'm not gonna rehash all the pen stuff - i've talked at length about how much i needed pen to reach rock bottom and how she's done so much shit and deserves to be called out for it, etc. etc.

but i think you brought up a great point that people tend to forget - well fucking duh we like kate (and anthony) way more than penelope. THEY'VE HAD THEIR SEASON. we've gotten real time with them, seen them in various different ways - good, bad, ugly, everything in between. people HATED anthony in s1... but with some actual backstory and someone to play off of, anthony is now beloved. don't forget how much of a sexist ass he was in s1 and in the s2 premiere! but despite that, we still love him bc we UNDERSTAND him.

to me, the show hasn't made us truly understand penelope yet. in some ways, sure, like HOW pulls off the LW stuff, or why she wrote that article about marina or eloise. but WHY is she LW? obviously we can infer things... but they haven't actually explicitly focused on it... bc that's not the focus right now.

in my mind, they don't really want you to root for her unquestioningly. she HAS made some terrible, terrible decisions and absolutely deserves to suffer consequences for that. (and yes, in comparison, colin has done shit lmao which is why it's interesting why so many people hate him instead of just finding him boring or bland, which to me makes more sense). penelope isn't 2-d... she's just unfinished. she's messy and unlikable (just like every female character on the show imo... they're purposefully making every female character have flaws and not just "quirky" ones, but actual flaws that are ugly and gross and make you mad at the characters and sometimes even the writing.) daphne and kate have had the time and the focus to become fully-fleshed out and that's why we love them (well... daphne is still a [redacted] but that's a different issue.)

anyway i see it as you're not suppose to be rooting for pen yet. or at least, not this version of pen. you're suppose to see her digging herself into this hole and see all the worst parts of her (and i get that can be annoying given the whole screentime thing but that's a different topic). i personally am still rooting for her redemption, and yeah maybe it's bc i know her potential as a book character. but i also think if we get 189237494 different versions of white hot male characters getting their half-ass redemption arcs, then why shouldn't we afford penelope the same opportunity?

i? actually really liked the inclusion of the middle school plotline? i loved the fact that we got to rehash the og karate kid story with the twist of the daniel character joining cobra kai… without any familial ties and drama. that being said! i also loved that anthony was the bully. daniel raising a son to literally be some other kid’s johnny? great. brilliant. plus there was the relation to robby (i was WAITING for kenny to name drop larusso but it was cool for robby to find out in the locker room) i also liked that a lot of it was cyberbulling, which was a lot more realistic for a show set in this day and age, than all the physical fighting we’ve seen. of COURSE i wish it had been more fleshed out. but they launched it right up into a main plotline of the season… which of course means they’re not going to dive into it as much as it deserves because they didn’t do that for any of the main plotlines this season that are being carried over from past seasons. but tbh, having a background character with absolutely no stake in the plot (but who should have one! as a larusso! he should have just as much as amanda but he just happens to be at a sleepover the night of a home invasion bc the writers forget ab him as much as his parents do lmao) suddenly be launched late into a war he’s been barely paying attention to besides getting into arguments with johnny in his own kitchen… i’m loving it. especially because! they’re so young! we saw the effect peer pressure had on anthony to start being a dick to kenny! and how kenny is so blindly trustinf of cobra kai! how he can become just like johnny after being imprinted on like that at such a young age… i really wanna see him get out of it and heal… kenny ily bb… I’M EXCITED

You're actually the first!! Which is surprising bc he's kinda a fan favorite

Quirrel- Honestly, I kinda see him as the Solaire of Hollow Knight, which means that I was pretty sure that he was going to die but was very fond of him anyways. As a character, I consider him to be fascinating as well as well-fleshed out, but I never really understood why the fandom thought that he was old/suicidal...? Bc honestly my first impression of him was that he'd been around college graduation age when he got kicked out into the Wastes, and that him saying 'I begin to feel my age' is Monomon's spell on him wearing away with his death, and him realizing that and feeling all those centuries weighing heavy on his shoulders. Likewise, I saw him leaving his nail behind at the Blue Lake as a symbolic death of Quirrel of Hallownest, not Quirrel the Wanderer. Hollow Knight is all about learning to healthily let go of grief, so I thought he was supposed to be an example of that, with him accepting that he would never fully remember who he was and then choosing to move on to a new, peaceful life. And ngl, it still kind of irks me that people tend to follow the popular theory of him drowning himself instead of trying to find their own unique literary interpretation of the event. Like hell, when I heard people thought he died, my initial assumption was that they thought his age LITERALLY caught up to him, not suicide, bc there's no hints whatsoever towards suicidal idealization from him in the game, so it just doesn't make much sense to me.

I also don't really see why he's much of a fan favorite? Other than obviously being nice. But that doesn't bother me at all, it's just kinda like how I'm confused why labradors are favorites among dog breeds when all the other breeds are good for different reasons. They're all Good Bois in my eyes

Grimm- Grimm was probs one of my first real favorites ngl, because he's literally just chillin' and doing his own thing, plus he's got fae vibes off the fucking CHARTS. I personally really love the whole inversion of expectations thing that HK has going on, where the darkness is the victim and the holy beings of light are the troublemakers, so when I saw the whole 'demonic circus' thing being played off as 'oh yeah this god is essentially just a vulture coming to feed off of dead kingdoms, he's harmless even if hes spooky', I was DELIGHTED. I do think that people either write him as nicer or far more terrible than he is in canon (usually nicer lets be real), but thats not really a big gripe of mine bc there's a lot less annoying discourse with him than there is with PK. Also his colour scheme and bossfights are fucking amazing

Overall, 10/10, very deserving of being Hollow Knight's tumblr sexyman

Bretta- BRETTA IS LIKE, THE ONLY NPC IM INVESTED IN NOT DYING OKAY. I LOVE HER SHE'S BEST GIRL. I guess in my case I already expected everyone else to die or get infected, bc its what I would have done when writing the story/I'm not really into the mortal characters much, but Bretta is the one npc that I really hope is okay in canon. I have no fucking idea why so many people don't like her tbh? Because to me she's the epitome of young teen/preteen who has literally no friends whatsoever, so she throws herself into dramatic love stories and 'crushes' on everyone who even gives her a glance bc she's starved of pretty much every other scrap of positive attention. She's not actually a whimsical creep attaching herself to anyone who's even a tiny bit strong, she's just very very lonely and has no idea how to engage with people bc she's shy. Honestly all I want for her is to realize that she doesn't need 'romance' to be happy or loved, and to be friends with Little Ghost (who's emotionally/mentally only slightly younger than her btw). I also want her to crush on Hollow bc I think that would be funny as fuck ksjdfhgbksdjfg

So tdlr: Bretta's one of the only npcs that really ranks over 'nice and I like them but I forget they exist' for me, and I really wish that the fandom would stop leaving her out of shit bc I almost never see her in good-end aus :(
