some of you have asked me about my crt setup!!

some basic materials you'll need.

CRT TV (duh)

computer or laptop (duh)

HDMI2AV (NOT AV2HDMI)

RCA cords (the red, white and yellow ones)

HDMI to USB converter if your laptop doesn't have HDMI like mine does.

here is the setup, this is a multi monitor setup but you can just do this with one CRT.

step one: plug in your crt. cord in the back. that will power your crt!

step two: plug in the RCA cables like this.

step three: plug your RCA cords into the HDMI2AV adapter like so. you'll plug in an HDMI cord on the other side. MAKE SURE IT'S SET TO THE CORRECT SETTING. THERE'S NTSC AND PAL

if you don't know what yours is, check this map that explains where each one was sold.

PAL is just a different color encoding system, a bunch of technical stuff you can learn on your own.

step four: plug your HDMI into the USB adapter if you need it. YOU MIGHT NOT. DEPENDS ON YOUR DEVICE.

i use a windows surface pro and it requires i use this adapter. sucks ass but whatever.

OPTIONAL: if you have ONLY ONE usb port in your computer, consider getting a USB splitter so you can plug multiple things in. i have one.

and voila. a set-up!

you can treat these like different displays.

mines connected by the 3 cords in the front, but if you have more money and can get another adapter and etc etc, you can make these all different.

a few FAQ since i assume quite a few of you have never used crts or vhs players:

whats the ringing sound?: its a ringing sound caused by the transformer in the back, its the 15kHz tone. as you get older, you stop hearing it because you lose high frequency hearing. i cant hear it in one ear because of a radio accident and i bursted my eardrum.

can i stop the ringing?: buy a crt pc. theyre smaller and dont ring as much/at all depending on which one you have.

how do i use my vhs player: you plug the cords into the back of the vhs player and then into the crt.

where do i buy a crt: theyre not in production anymore so you will have to buy it secondhand on markets.

where did you get all your cords: most stores with an electronics section will have it but consider secondhand computer parts store.

what do you do with it: literally watch YouTube, vhs tapes, make vhs tapes (whole different thing) or play video games.

can it run bad apple?: yes

can it run doom?: yes

what did you use to record your art onto vhs tapes and digitize them ? I have a few crts and idk what to buy in order to do that

I would display my laptop screen onto my CRT with an HDMI2AV converter, then i would record my art onto a tape that was in the VCR. Personally my process gets a lot more complicated from here because of Reasons, but you can buy a cheap AV digitizer online (which hooks up to your VCR and to your laptop/computer) and use OBS to record it from the VCR. I have to use a separate VCR from my TV because my TV doesn't have any output ports just inputs.

Sorry if this explanation isnt great, my process of doing this is really stupid lol, there's probably better guides online.

WOAH HOW DO YOU DO A PIRATE TELEVISION STATION?? THAT'S SO COOL!! (you don't need to share if having that info public would cause the station to be taken down)

It’s pretty simple. You need an RF modulator (I use a rack mounted Blonder-Tongue Agile Modulator), which every VCR also is. You just put some source video into that (I often just use a chromecast + HDMI2AV adapter), and attach an antenna to the RF-out. 

The trick is that it only gets into “the FCC will get mad at you” territory if you’re broadcasting with more than a watt or two of power. Most RF Modulators are limited to that much anyway (because they’re intended for internal cable TV networks) so as long as you don’t stick an amplifier on it, you’re in the clear.

I just racked it because I had a couple units (and I’ve gotten more since I took this picture) but you can just use a single modulator on its own without needing a rack.

IDK if it can be fully conveyed on the internet especially because the displays are so variable in quality and calibration but I kinda feel like the way the Neo Geo Mini is probably running the games in HD and then the HDMI2AV is downscaling it to SD upscales the games to full SD

Idk what the chances of anyone knowing this are but do they make two way RCA/HDMI converters. Like I know you can get HDMI2AV and AV2HDMI but can you get a box that does both bc that would be so cute

how did yoy get faggot on the little tv… i have one but im afraid of trying to put anything on it

i use a hdmi2av converter. theyre cheap. you just need that, a phone charger block, hdmi cable, rca cables, and like laptop. then you display whatever from the laptop screen onto the tv screen.

these mini converters are great. They run off USB power, and they go both ways (as do I), so you can buy them in HDMI2AV or AV2HDMI.

I own a bunch of each flavor, and the best part? Every time you need one, you'll only be able to find the other kind. Need to display modern video on an old TV? You're drowning in AV2HDMI. Need to capture the output of a VCR on your HDMI capture card? fuck you, you only have HDMI2AV now!

I'd easily pay twice as much for one box that could do both.

Maybe I should just buy them in pairs and tape them together

OMG... NEO GEO MINI HOOKED UP TO MY CRT TV TWENTY FOOOOOOOOUR

Got into the settings of the CRT TV and improved the image quality!

My family had it set too bright and overly saturated...

Unfortunately the Neo Geo Mini is locked in MVS mode and can't find settings to uncensor the blood in the games but it looks and plays perfectly.. the image quality through the HDMI2AV converter I got is very good especially after I calibrated the TV.. it doesn't seem to introduce discernable latency to me..

I needed to order another USB-C adapter to connect my 8bitdo Neo Geo joypad though because the USB-C ports are sunken in with rounded corners and the USB-C adapters I have have squared corners making them not fit..

I may want to eventually get those Neo Geo usb arcade stick clones from Ali Express!
