Those Economics/Architecture Videos I've Been Bingeing
But eating less bandwidth than the previous version of this post.
This post has 100 links, because that's how many tumblr lets me add before it refuses to save the post anymore. (Legacy editor allows up to 250, but then I would have the colors.)
A lot of these are about NYC, because that's my personal main focus, but there are a few others. Also, I have absolutely no training in this field and only started watching these a few days ago but Ya Girl Is Bingeing and Really Loves Edutainment. All the descriptions are my own, btw. I'm not looking to gain clicks or references, I want you guys to know what you're getting into.
I was not involved in creating any of these videos, but it did take me over a week to watch them all and decide which ones to include, how to organize, and how to describe the contents.
I cannot speak to a lot of the deeper issues touched on, and do not agree with all the political or economic points brought up in these videos (as this is a wide range of people and topics), but they are by and large a good look at much of an industry that most people, myself included, don't know enough about, considering how crucial it is to our lives.
I'm open to channel/video recs but there are a few I ran into that seem well-done but have an audio quality I can't work with, so that's... unfortunate.
Stewart Hicks - Chicago-based, professor of architecture at the University of Illinois
Why Skyscrapers Are Losing Their Tops - Stewart Hicks - The general history of architectural styles for skyscrapers from the 1930s to the near future.
Why Do Architects Insist on Using Flat Roofs? - Stewart Hicks - Compares and contrasts the strengths and weaknesses of flat vs gabled roofs.
How Buildings Changed After the Eiffel Tower - Stewart Hicks - Thirteen minutes of history on structural engineering in bridges and skyscrapers.
The Bewildering Architecture of Indoor Cities - Stewart Hicks - Goes into the planned and unplanned variants of this phenomenon, which ranges from giant buildings intended to act as an entire community, to the unplanned network of underground tunnels or overstreet enclosed walkways that let people cross blocks upon blocks of a city without having to step outside.
How This Tower Barely Touches the Ground - Stewart Hicks - Addresses the engineering behind 150 N. Riverside in Chicago, and the zoning laws that caused its rather unique Y-shaped base in the first place, along with the requirements causing things like custom giant I-beams and necessitating a barge to host the crane since they had nowhere to anchor one on the ground.
How Chicago is Being Unbuilt: Back to Nature - Stewart Hicks - Explores the ways in which Chicago is undoing prior urbanization, and implementing some new eco-friendly infrastructure and various projects.
Why We Should Live in Our Office Buildings - Stewart Hicks - More and more office buildings are standing empty. With movements towards more mixed zoning and the return to walkable city models, some of those office buildings are getting retrofitted to be livable spaces and mixed-use locations.
How Architects Design for Less Lonely Living - Stewart Hicks - In a lot of places, like the US, the way we interact or avoid other people is impacted heavily by the organization of the buildings we live in.
House Sizes Are Getting Absurd - Stewart Hicks - Just a fun romp comparing the range of sizes (from the bare minimum of capsule hotels to the absurd mass of some modern estates) for various dwellings. Lots of very deliberate visualization.
Shopping Malls are Getting Desperate - Stewart Hicks - Discusses the decline of shopping malls, and the 'tricks' they employ to try to keep people happy and coming by.
The Architecture of Curb Appeal - Stewart Hicks - There's a lot that goes into making a house look good in a way that gets it sold. A lot of people hate it.
The Controversy Over Accessory Dwelling Units - Stewart Hicks - In many places, it's illegal to build a smaller livable space in your backyard. You know, places you put an adult child who wants their own space, or your mother-in-law, or just rent out to college students for the next ten months. But, at least in a few places, it's not going to be illegal much longer.
Toilets Need to Change - Stewart Hicks - Plumbing is such an important part of our daily lives, and it's still evolving!
The Hidden Meaning and Logistics of Fountains - Stewart Hicks - This one is just fun. 😊
The Genius of 2x4 Framing - Stewart Hicks - So apparently the US is a bit odd in how much of our architectural/construction industry uses light wood framing as a standard.
The B1M - Hosted by Fred Mills (British), more generally about construction, rather than just architecture
Why America Is Tearing Down Its Highways - The B1M - Explores the history of the interstate highway system, and how much of it was used for redlining and general segregation, along with the challenges faced by the plans to tear those highways down.
The $1.2 Trillion Plan to Rebuild America - The B1M - NGL I'm like. Ludicrously excited about this one. There's a lot going on! I hope it works out!
Why a Billionaire Tried to Stop This Bridge - The B1M - There's a new bridge being built between Detroit, MI and Windsor, ON. This bridge is going to help with the ongoing trade between the US and Canada; these two cities are already a major hub for one of the largest trading partnerships in the world (the largest where one side is not the European Union), so building another bridge is a reasonable undertaking. However, the new bridge will be just a few miles down from an existing bridge that is currently owned by a billionaire who makes a killing over his control of a major portion of this bottleneck of the trade route. (Also, more engineering challenges!)
The Statue of Liberty: Building an Icon - The B1M - Someone actually asked me about this recently and anyway you should all go learn about how the Statue of Liberty happened, she's a gem.
Why New York’s Billionaires’ Row Is Half Empty - The B1M- The usage of NYC luxury housing as a semi-liquid asset used as investment by the megarich, along with the rights acquisitions that led to their building in the first place, the gentrification they contribute to, and the tax write-offs they get for it.
Why Our Cities Are So Expensive - The B1M - How infrastructure investment by governments can and does frequently lead to gentrification. Focuses on London's Battersea Power Station revitalization plan.
Why New York's Skyscrapers Keep Changing Shape - The B1M - This is actually an exploration of more than just New York, covering much of the same topics as the above 'history of skyscraper design' video, with a great focus on the Chrysler building.
Why No One Wants This New York Skyscraper - The B1M - Investigates the ways in which the development of Two World Trade Center has been delayed over the past decade and change, along with a handful of other projects in the area.
The Wild Story of New York’s Abandoned Skyscraper - The B1M - There's a half-finished skyscraper on the western shore of Manhattan, and due to the errors in laying the foundation, there's an 8cm tilt in it. The parties involved in construction are duking it out in court about who's at fault, and until they're done, that thing is just... sitting there.
New York's Latest $3BN Skyscraper Explained - The B1M - Another stupidly tall skyscraper for midtown. You know. Because we need another one.
The $7BN Plan to Save New York's Most Hated Train Station - The B1M - Explores the history, current state, and planned upgrades to Penn Station of NYC.
New York's Most Hated Highway is Falling Apart - The B1M - The issues hitting the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and the difficulties in repairing it.
The Secret Subway That Could Save New York - The B1M - Hey do you want to hear about how we might finally be getting that Queens-Brooklyn line that doesn't need to pass through Manhattan first?
The Tunnel That's Failing New York City - The B1M - The tunnel that handles a massive amount of the human traffic between NJ and NYC is starting to break down due to age. This one included a line that actually gave me feelings: "Look, it's a 110-year-old system, you know, it's done its job. Like, we really can't ask any more of it." It did its best! For a long time! Thank you!
The US Government Wants to Destroy These Towers - The B1M - The federal government just wants to demolish some Historic Skyscrapers in Chicago, no biggie.
The Secret $4BN Tunnel Network Under Chicago - The B1M - Since the 1970s, Chicago has been building an absolutely massive set of tunnels hundreds of feet under the surface to handle regular flooding from storms and the climate crisis.
The Fight to Fix the Tilting Millennium Tower - The B1M - There's this skyscraper in San Francisco that's leaning a few centimeters to the side, which doesn't sound like a lot, until you learn that just a few more will mean the plumbing and elevators stop working.
The £100BN Railway Dividing a Nation - The B1M - Goes over the political, economic, and environmental arguments and concerns behind the highspeed rail intended to connect London to the North of England.
Inside London's £19BN New Railway (and its Nightmare Station) - The B1M - Genuinely fascinated at the number of Train Problems that England seems to be having.
Why Europe Doesn't Build Skyscrapers - The B1M - Explains the historical and modern reasons that limit the addition of supertall buildings across most of Europe.
The Insane Scale of Europe's New Mega-Tunnel - The B1M - Explores the engineering and environmental challenges of the Fehmarntunnel, a passage from Germany to Denmark of terrifying size.
Why Europe is Building a 57KM Tunnel Through a Mountain - The B1M - No, a different one. This one is between Italy and France.
We Went Inside the Largest Nuclear Fusion Reactor - The B1M - It's in France, there are over 35 countries involved, and it's just a Lot.
Inside The Lab That Tests Elevator Free-Falls - The B1M - There's this active mine in Finland where they test elevators for safety and it's pretty cool.
Finland Might Have Solved Nuclear Power’s Biggest Problem - The B1M - Finland has a new way of storing nuclear waste.
Nord Stream 2: The $11BN Megaproject That's Dividing - The B1M - It's an oil pipeline and it is causing problems for Everyone.
Why Russia is Building an Arctic Silk Road - The B1M - Russia is taking advantage of the melting ice caps to set up a new trade route through the arctic so shipping can go up through the north instead of down around South Asia and through the Suez Canal.
The $10BN Railway in the Jungle - The B1M - Mexico is building a new, very long high-speed rail line, and it's incredibly controversial.
Hong Kong's $11BN Underwater Railway Explained - The B1M - Hong Kong is putting in a new underwater tunnel (as part of a larger network expansion) for its subway system, and it's. Difficult.
China's Skyscraper Boom is Officially Over - The B1M - Just learned that China is outlawing most skyscrapers. There are a few cases where you can still maybe make one happen, if you can convince the government it's needed, but in most cases... nah. They're cutting you off.
The Unstoppable Growth of China's High-Speed Rail Network - The B1M - [insert gif screaming about trains here]
The Insane Engineering of Tokyo's First Supertall Skyscraper - The B1M - While the focus is ostensibly Main Tower, the video covers a lot of ground regarding earthquakes and the necessary engineering to resist the incredibly frequent occurrence. (Warning: Came out shortly after the Feb. 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake, and contains references to the event, urging people contribute what they could to help. The video was already almost finished when the Turkey-Syria earthquake happened, and rather than delay it for fear of it being in bad taste, they decided to use it to encourage people to help the victims.)
Japan’s $64BN Gamble on Levitating Bullet Trains Explained - The B1M - Let's talk about maglev, pros and cons.
Is This Asia's Next Financial Capital? - The B1M - Malaysia is building a lot, and it might herald a new financial superpower for the continent and the world.
Why India Doesn’t Build Skyscrapers - The B1M - The short answer is 'zoning laws that didn't achieve what the legislators hoped,' but it's changing.
The $4BN Railway Reshaping Delhi - The B1M - What it says on the tin.
The World's Most Extreme Construction Site - The B1M - Antarctica!!!
Egypt Built a Supertall Skyscraper in the Desert - The B1M - Egypt is straight up building an entire city in the middle of nowhere, primarily as a new seat of government, because Cairo is overcrowded... and a frequent site of protests.
Top 10 Projects Completing in 2023 - The B1M - Some impressive, expensive, and possibly unnecessary projects that are happening.
Tomorrow's Build is a second channel under The B1M, also hosted by Fred Mills. It's more focused on hypothetical, future projects than ongoing ones.
Barcelona’s Car-Free Superblocks Explained - Tomorrow's Build - Barcelona is planning to block off entire parts of the city from most car usage, excepting local delivery, mass transit, and emergency services.
The Hidden Crisis With Renewable Energy - Tomorrow's Build - Storage of energy from renewable sources that are not consistently available (e.g. solar is only available when the sun is out) is difficult, so here are a few options.
This Nuclear Plant is Built in 3 Months - Tomorrow's Build - Mail-order nuclear power is going to be a thing.
Greece is Turning its Olympic Ruins into a Casino - Tomorrow's Build - [good for them dot gif]
This Could Stop Construction Everywhere - Tomorrow's Build - So it turns out we're running out of sand. Which is important, because we need sand for concrete, and the easiest stuff to get (desert sand), doesn't work for that, which is why Dubai has to import sand for construction. So uh. Kind of a crisis. Sand pirates are a whole thing.
Architectural Digest - channel for the architectural magazine that dates back to 1920
Architect Breaks Down 5 of the Most Common New York Apartments - Architectural Digest - Just what it says on the tin! An architect explains brownstones, classics, railroad apartments, and loft/studio apartments. Lots of history, specifically that of the late 19th century tenement buildings and the art community and subsequent gentrification of SoHo.
Architect Breaks Down 6 Luxury Apartments from Billions, Gossip Girl & More - Architectural Digest - On the other end of NYC housing, we got the Rich People Places.
Architect Breaks Down Secret Details Of The Chrysler Building - Architectural Digest - An exploration of the external details of the Chrysler, with commentary on the historical context of art deco and related art movements.
Architect Breaks Down 3 Demolished New York Landmarks - Architectural Digest - Goes over the original Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and the New York Herald building.
Architect Breaks Down The Evolving Skyscrapers Of New - Architectural Digest - I'm... not going to pretend I'm less than obsessed with NYC videos. Sorry! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Covers setback/wedding cake tiered, glass curtain wall, plaza towers, expressed structures, and the (hated) supertall.
Architect Breaks Down NYC Subway Stations (Oldest & Newest) - Architectural Digest - And we continue on NYC infrastructure history because I am insatiable.
Architect Explores New York City's Greenwich Village | Walking Tour - Architectural Digest - What a beautiful and inconvenient neighborhood, full of so many dead bodies.
Top Luxury - Despite the name, is about construction in general, including critique of megearich projects, so don't go in expecting it to be About The Luxury
World's Most Useless Megaprojects - Top Luxury - Did you know there are entire cities lying around empty? I already knew that, but there are just. So many giant projects that never got finished, ate up a lot of money, and are just kind of sitting around now.
5 Skyscrapers that Never Existed - Top Luxury - Some of these never got past the concept stage, and some ran out of funding, and at least one got turned into a fish farm by locals after it was abandoned.
Biggest Megaprojects in the World - Top Luxury - Exactly what it says on the tin! Guys, there are so many giant projects happening, and so many of them are controversial As Heck.
Why these Megacities are Still Empty - Top Luxury - Not entirely empty, but yeah, there are some megacities designed for one purpose or another that are more Ghost Town than Bustling Metropolis. Other than Naypyidaw, though, most of them are expected to gain larger populations soon, particularly Nusantara (which is being built specifically due to the sinking of Jakarta).
The Most Terrifying Bridges in the World - Top Luxury - Like half of these are in a specific region of China that just has. So many mountains.
Most Expensive Construction Mistakes in the World (Part 3) - Top Luxury - Have you ever fucked up so incredibly that it cost six billion USD to fix?
Not Just Bikes - Canadian living in Europe; city planning with focus on N. American car-centric zoning
Why City Design is Important (and Why I Hate Houston) - Not Just Bikes - Do you want more ammo to show people when they try to argue with you about walkable cities?
America Always Gets This Wrong (when building transit) - Not Just Bikes - How zoning and city planning needs to adjust in order for mass transit to actually work for people.
Suburbs that don't Suck - Streetcar Suburbs (Riverdale, Toronto) - Not Just Bikes - So there actually are good suburbs in the US and Canada, we just can't build them anymore because zoning laws make it impossible.
Stroads are Ugly, Expensive, and Dangerous (and they're everywhere) - Not Just Bikes - So there's this really popular and horrible form of street/road in the US and Canada that is bad at its job.
Would You Fall for It? - Not Just Bikes - 1950s pro-highway propaganda (which is referenced in many other videos from this channel), and the ways in which it was misleading and effective.
These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us - Not Just Bikes - This video actually did numbers on tumblr a few months ago. You know those stupidly big SUVs and Pick-ups? Yeah! They suck!
Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud - Not Just Bikes - With a few small changes, you too could live in a city that doesn't make you want to wear noise-cancelling headphones every moment of the day.
IT'S HISTORY - Various historic places... mostly NYC
Why can't you visit the Statue of Liberty's Torch? - IT'S HISTORY - Has some confusing image choices (photos from the early 20th century while talking about events from the 18th), but delivers on a fun history of the Statue of Liberty (and includes some facts that the other Lady Liberty video didn't get around to).
What's Left of New York's Lost Reservoir? - IT'S HISTORY - Apparently it turned into Bryant Park.
When Chicago built the Tallest Building in the World | The story of Sears Tower - IT'S HISTORY - Just what it says on the tin.. Big building, big history!
The Secret Tunnels Beneath New York - IT'S HISTORY - NYC has lost so many tunnels? Lost track of, forgotten, rediscovered... it's ridiculous. Half of these are for TRAINS. Those are HUGE. Led to me making this post (which contains a meme or two, but also a very important trigger warning).
Other
The lost neighborhood under New York's Central Park - Vox - Explains the history of Seneca Village: a primarily-black community of newly wealthy, often first-generation-freed peoples that was destroyed to make way for Central Park.
The Rise and Fall of American Malls - Bloomberg Originals - Covers the factors that led to malls becoming so common, and the many things that are contributing to the move away from them.
Megastructures: Building the Burj Al Arab | Dubai Engineering - Reel Truth Science Documentaries - This is fifty minutes of engineering and architecture, and really well done/presented. Mostly steers clear of the larger political controversy in favor of focusing on the math, though it can't entirely avoid the political and economic conflicts due to direct influence on the design by a the Crown Prince.
Why Venice is Europe’s Worst Placed City - Real Life Lore - We all know Venice is sinking, but this explains why and how (it's not just global climate change).
Why Wyoming is VASTLY Emptier Than Colorado - Real Life Lore - More of a general history lesson than architecture, but still fun.
Why Engineers Can't Control Rivers - Practical Engineering - I've had a few classes touch on this topic, but it was mostly back in high school. This video has some really good visualization on the main elements, and addresses that there are some places working on actual fixes!
Why Construction Projects Always Go Over Budget - Practical Engineering - Goes over the process by which costs are estimated, the limitations of those processes, and the risks that inevitably force the budget higher.
Czechia's Incredible 1960s Supervillain-Lair Hotel (And Why Its Architect Got Banned By The Regime) - The Tim Traveller - There's this really cool hotel that recently got refurbished.
Why Egypt Is Building a New Capital City - neo - Another video on the new city in Egypt, but with more in-depth exploration of the specific planning choices (where certain buildings are, especially).
The Forgotten Story of Modulex: LEGO's Lost Cousin - Peter Dibble - LEGO had a brand called Modulex that was used for architecture and city planning for a few decades. These days they mostly do signage.
Why Airplanes Are Still Worth Millions After They Stop Flying - CNBC - The various ways planes are broken down, sold for parts, and otherwise recycled.

Net Zero Home Build: My Biggest Regret Building My New House. The first 100 people to use code UNDECIDED at the link below will get 20% off of Incogni: https://incogni.com/undecided. There are a lot of different paths you can take to get to a net-zero home. Everything from passive homes to earthships to modular and factory built houses. You can retrofit an existing building or you can build a new one. All of the options can make your head spin and there are pros and cons to each of them. In my case, I’m building a new, factory built net zero home with a lot of solar panels, which has been in the planning stages for a while now, but is scheduled to start construction very soon. I thought it would be interesting to share what I’m doing and why my wife and I chose the path we did. So let’s see how we came to our decision … and if I have any regrets so far.

Your Guide to High-Quality Video Production: Choosing the Right Studio
Tumblr media
Picture this: you step into a professional video studio in Johannesburg. It’s like entering a parallel universe where creativity and technology dance together. Lights are perfectly set, backdrops are on point, and there’s an electric hum of excitement. This isn’t just any room; it’s a place where your wildest ideas can come to life. A well-equipped video studio is where your vision transforms into a compelling narrative. It's not just about having a fancy camera; it’s about the right vibe, the perfect lighting, and a team that knows how to make magic happen.
Finding the Right Video Studio Near You
Alright, Sherlock, your mission is to find the perfect video studio. Start by diving into the digital world. Use keywords like "video studio near me" and "green screen studio." Let search engines and directories like Yelp and ProductionHub guide you through a sea of reviews, ratings, and detailed descriptions.
Social media is your new best friend. Platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn offer behind-the-scenes peeks into studios’ portfolios and client interactions. Here, you can spy on their creative process and see firsthand the delight (or despair) of their clients.
Next up, reviews and testimonials. Think of them as the Yelp of your video production journey. Consistent praise is like a five-star rating, while detailed feedback reveals the juicy details about equipment quality and customer service. Negative reviews? Don’t fret. They’re golden opportunities to see how studios handle criticism. Professional and constructive responses? That’s a win.
Websites offer a sneak peek into a studio’s soul. Look for comprehensive service lists, equipment details, and portfolios that make your heart skip a beat. This exploration helps you understand the studio’s capabilities and whether their style vibes with yours.
Recommendations from colleagues and industry professionals are like secret handshakes. Personal experiences from trusted sources often lead you to the hidden gems of the studio world.
And finally, the studio visit. Channel your inner detective and assess the space. Check the equipment, feel the atmosphere, and soak in the vibes. The layout, lighting setups, acoustics, and overall organization will reveal the true potential of the studio.
Customer service is the cherry on top. Prompt communication, knowledgeable staff, and flexibility are signs of a professional operation ready to bring your vision to life.
What to Look for in a Video Production Company
Choosing a video production company is like finding the perfect dance partner. You need someone experienced, with moves that complement yours. Look for a company with years of experience. They’ve likely faced and conquered various challenges, making them better equipped to handle whatever you throw their way.
A diverse portfolio showcases versatility and quality. High-definition visuals, clear audio, and professional editing are the signs of a maestro. The company’s style should echo your vision, ensuring a harmonious collaboration.
Client reviews are the applause that confirms you’ve found a winner. Positive feedback and detailed reviews highlight strengths and areas for growth. How the company responds to criticism reflects their commitment to client satisfaction.
Ensure the company offers a full suite of services. From pre-production to post-production, they should be your one-stop-shop for all things video.
Understanding their pricing structure is essential. Detailed quotes and a clear value proposition help balance cost with quality, ensuring you get the best bang for your buck.
Evaluating Video Studio Equipment and Facilities
When you step into a potential video studio, let your inner tech geek run wild. High-definition or 4K cameras paired with a variety of lenses are non-negotiable. Accessories like tripods and stabilizers are the cherry on top.
Lighting is the magic that transforms scenes from drab to fab. Look for comprehensive options, including softboxes, LED panels, and spotlights. The ability to adjust intensity and colour temperature is crucial for achieving the perfect shot.
Sound is as vital as sight. High-quality microphones and audio equipment ensure every word is captured clearly. Proper soundproofing and acoustic treatments elevate audio quality, creating an immersive experience.
Backdrops add layers to your narrative. A variety of options, from solid colours to green screens, should be clean and well-maintained, ready to set the stage for your story.
Green screen capabilities open up endless possibilities. Ensure the area is spacious, well-lit, and in excellent condition. Post-production services for seamless compositing are essential, turning your vision into reality.
An editing suite equipped with professional software and experienced editors is the final piece of the puzzle. A comfortable workspace is the breeding ground for meticulous, high-quality editing.
Green Screen Studio: Expanding Your Creative Horizons
A green screen studio is like having a magic portal to infinite creativity. It allows you to transport your subjects to any backdrop, from vibrant cityscapes to tranquil beaches. This flexibility is invaluable for corporate videos, educational content, marketing campaigns, and creative projects.
When evaluating a green screen studio, consider the size and setup. The area should be ample and the surface smooth. Proper, adjustable lighting is key to eliminating shadows and ensuring even illumination. Expert post-production services are crucial for integrating green screen footage seamlessly into your project. Reviewing previous green screen projects gives you a glimpse into the studio’s creativity and expertise.
Role of the Video Studio Manager in Ensuring Quality
A video studio manager is like the conductor of an orchestra, ensuring everything runs smoothly and harmoniously. They maintain equipment, ensuring it’s always in peak condition. They orchestrate schedules, balancing bookings to prevent conflicts and ensure smooth operations. Their technical expertise shines through in on-site assistance and troubleshooting, swiftly resolving any issues that arise. Overseeing the production process, they maintain high standards and continuously seek client feedback to refine their services.
Choosing the Right Video Production Company
Your vision deserves the best. Whether you need a green screen studio for imaginative projects, top-tier equipment for corporate videos, or expert post-production services, finding the right partner is crucial.
Consider Astral Studios for top-notch video production services. Based in Johannesburg, Astral Studios offers a comprehensive range of services to meet all your video production needs. Little Red Riding Hood: Gakuen Babysitters Edition, Part 1
This work is inspired by the first Gakuen Babysitters CD's special drama CD (titled "Little Red Riding Hood" or 「赤頭巾ちゃん」). The full audio was on YouTube, but then was removed due to copyright. I do remember some parts of it with my level of Japanese, and will adapt it from translated excerpts from @kumapillow. As far as I know the special drama CD is an original story, but I will include some references to other chapters.  You can read part 1 of it below the cut (there is no intention of copyright infringement, as I am doing this for free as a hobby):
The day started out just like any other day at the Morinomiya mansion. Except the Chairwoman had recently fallen ill since last night. To the Kashima brothers, her being sick was quite the scare as not too long ago she had sprained her hip, luckily recovering quite relatively fast with her tenacity and strong will. It also didn’t help that months later Saikawa also caught a cold unexpectedly, but fortunately with the help of the Chairwoman the two brothers were able to help nurse him back to health. Thankfully, neither brothers got the cold from taking care of Saikawa as they both took care to wear personal protection equipment, though Kotaro’s was made by hand by the Chairwoman as what they had was too big for him. While Yōko recovers, Ryūichi and Kotarō spend their time together as usual, starting with a new picture book fairy tale to read after breakfast. COVID-19 was also not a major reason to panic.
Thankfully, their neighborhood was the least affected by the coronavirus outbreak with zero cases of hospitalizations and deaths. Saikawa with his usual versatility had already taken the precautions and bought the groceries and other house supplies; also, he took great care of cleaning and sanitizing the whole mansion, which Ryūichi was amazed by how he managed to do that within just 1 week. Within the first month of hearing the news, Yōko ordered that her school would be now conducted online until when the outbreak starts to calm down. Luckily, the teachers were well organized and managed their curriculum that was doable, but not too much of a pushover for all students.
Shizuka made sure that Hayato didn’t slack off of his schoolwork, and to have him play with Taka every now and then, as he, Ryūichi, and Usaida decided to halt all of the Babysitter Club’s activities as well, much to the chagrin-but-understanding of Taka, Kirin, Takuma, Kazuma, Midori, Maria, Yuki, Yagi (especially), the Nezu family, and even Inui-senpai (not that he will admit it). Once in a while, they manage to do video group meetings online, which does abate feelings of missing each other, with some amusing moments. Mostly on the Kamitani brothers fighting, with Ryūichi, Shizuka, and Maria scolding Hayato’s usual default of hitting Taka as a disciplinary method, while Shizuka also whacks Hayato in the head as well. And everyone is now aware of where Hayato gets this behavior from...
Ryūichi opens the book with Kotaro on his lap and starts, “Long ago, there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest. She was nicknamed ‘Little Red Riding Hood by the other villagers as she was always seen wearing wearing one as she went out. One day she was informed of her grandmother falling ill.” Kotaro inquires, “Nii-cha...” “Hmm? What is it Kotarō?”, Ryuichi asks. “Hoo’?” Kotaro asks confused with a head tilt. (A/N: hood in Japanese is 頭巾/ずきん ‘zukin’, and since Kotaro tends to miss ‘ん’ in Japanese words, I’ve taken upon adjusting my story diction accordingly).
“Oh that’s right. You probably still don’t know what a hood is. Hmm... it’s like this red handkerchief. Let me just wrap this around your head like so...”, Ryūichi explains to him while coincidentally finding a red handkerchief on the bedside table given to him by Saikawa after celebrating the Lunar New Year, with some basis in Chinese New Year tradition as red being a lucky color. “Ung?”, Kotaro voices in curiosity. “Alright, done! Have a look in the mirror.” As Kotaro turns to the mirror, his eyes sparkle in amazement and happily says “Hoo’!” “Isn’t that great? You look just like her in the story.”, Ryūichi encouraged. “Ung~.”
The Kashima duo then hears three even knocks from their bedroom door with Ryūichi answering, “Ah, yes? Please come in.” Saikawa enters the room, greeting with his usual formal demeanor, “Please excuse me for interrupting your conversation.”
“Oh, Saikawa-san. How is Obaa-san’s doing?”, Ryūichi greets. “About that, the doctor has informed us that she caught only the cold. It is very unlikely that it is COVID-19 as we all have been following the appropriate health guidelines. The doctor had also collected a small amount of her blood as a sample to be sent to the lab for serological testing as reassurance. She is currently resting in her room.”, Saikawa replies. Ryūichi felt reassured and said, “Is that so? Thank goodness.”
“‘Any of you catching my cold will be more troublesome, so don’t go anywhere near my room! Hmph!’ is what the Chairwoman said in her own words to relay to you two.”, Saikawa informs with his impression of Yōko. Ryūichi replies with a laugh, “Okay. I understand.”
“Speaking of which, regarding Kotarō-sama’s appearance... is it that of the Little Red Riding Hood, if I am not mistaken?”, Saikawa notes while noticing Kotarō’s new accessory. Ryūichi then explains, “Aah that’s right. We’re right now reading a picture book and he didn’t know what a “riding hood” is, so I told and showed him that it’s something like this. Right?”, Ryūichi says while turning to Kotarō. “Kota, Hoo-cha!”, Kotarō replies while holding the edges of his makeshift red hood.
Ahh, how extremely adorable, Saikawa mentally notes. “Today is a free day, so we’ll be home all day. Let us know if we can help you with anything, Saikawa-san.”, Ryūichi states with his usual dependability. “Thank you very much. I will be preparing lunch after this, so please take your time to enjoy reading the rest of the picture book.”, Saikawa states as he bows to them both and leaves the room, closing the door.
“I hope Obaa-san gets better soon. Right, Kotarō?” Ryūichi suggested to Kotaro, in a calm and hopeful tone. Yesterday, he and Kotarō panicked when they noticed Yōko’s red face to then hear coughing. Saikawa already dialed their primary physician as soon as he suspected something was off, and told them to calm down. “Ung.”, Kotarō replied. “Let’s get back to reading... now where were we?”, Ryūichi pondered. “Nii-cha, Hoo’!”, Kotarō happily reminds his brother. “Oh, that’s right. Let’s continue the story, okay?”, Ryūichi suggests while readjusting himself and Kotaro, who replied “Ung~”.
Ryūichi turns the page and continues, “One day Little Red Riding Hood’s mom calls her over and said, ‘Here’s a basket with some chicken and veggie soup, a cake, and a bottle of wine to give to Grandma. Could you deliver this to her? Grandma is very weak with illness, so this get-well-gift should make her feel better soon.” Kotaro asks, “Baa-cha, get-well-giff?” “Yeah, yeah. She’s going to bring a get-well-gift – ah a get-well-gift is something you bring to someone who is sick to make them feel happy and better.”, Ryuichi explains while also teaching the green-haired toddler.
“Ung! Baa-cha, get-well-giff! Kota will bwing too!”, Kotaro states with determination of the new info he has learned. The toddler then safely climbs off of Ryūichi’s lap while holding the picture book and walking out of their bedroom. “Ah! Where are you bringing that book, Kotaro?!” Ryūichi claims concerned and confused.
To be continued...

What do you think about the upcoming new Let It Be movie?
My thoughtful (if disorganised and near-hysterical) answer: I remain cautiously ambivalent. In a way I feel the same I’ve felt about the recent Super Deluxe Edition releases, where I am “happied” by whatever I can get, very much so, but I’m also exasperated in a pathetically hand-wringing fannish way that the estate is still trickling out outtakes in unbearably curated fashion as accessories to new mixes, when all I’ve ever really wanted is for them to release comprehensive collections of their session recordings - every take, every flub, every silly piece of silly studio chatter, everything. (Roll it out album by album, sell every volume in a fancy multi-disc box set for a small fortune, I don’t care, I’m willing to pay for it, and I expect many others would be too.) But alas! They haven’t, and they don’t look like they will in the near future, and so I can’t bring myself to hope for much with the Let It Be film either.
And especially not with Let It Be, by virtue of its medium, as a manipulated assemblage of curated footage, edited and cut and spliced together, in leading and misleading and distorted ways. (As all documentaries arguably are.) Even with the footage run through a supposedly more gracious filter, it will still be just that - filtered, reassembled, recut, and still an (in)effectively incomplete picture, inevitably subject to the confirmation biases and various lazy/shallow/poisonous interpretations rife in mainstream music journalism.
Which just has me wringing my hands with even more, not only because these sessions have been a bit of a preoccupation of mine for a while so I’m even more of an invested headcase than usual, but because the Get Back/Let It Be sessions arguably deserves the most reexamination in its greater perspective, and certainly the most correction and care. And it’s probably not going to get it, or at least not nearly enough. And of course I understand it has to be this way - the general public won’t be interested in going through 55~ hours of video recordings and 140~ hours of audio recordings (which means there are still at least 40-50 more hours of unreleased tapes than what has been leaked and circulated on bootleg for decades), and the logistics of mass-releasing such an enormous amount of material is laughable. But as I said, I am a headcase about this, and where the general public and even the general fans may take this new recut version of the film on some measure of faith, I probably won’t be able to bring myself to.
Also, every time I can stomach to take a tentative browse of mainstream music journalism or certain major music discussion forums and the narrow, cynical, simplistic narratives that are still being perpetuated about the Beatles in general and these sessions in particular, I find myself sadly resigned to the reality that many people’s minds may never be expanded or changed, no matter how the film is cut, or how the sessions are framed. If there’s “too much” inclusion of jokes and jollity and the fun the band really did have, it’ll trigger complaints of “whitewashing”, all the blame of which will almost certainly be placed upon “shrew-like control freak historical revisionist” Paul. If there’s any inclusion at all of previously-unseen tension or argumentative exchanges (which are really just ultimately sad attempts to relate and communicate emotionally with each other), it’ll only reinforce the absolutist perceptions held by some people of the sessions being wholly disastrous and wholly awful with no “real” joy and jollity anywhere, not to mention their perceptions of, well, “shrew-like control freak historical revisionist” Paul.
Basically, the very reframing, the very act of recutting of the film in and of itself, will be (and already is) seen by many people as a rewriting of history. Which is sad and silly, because in this case the history should be rewritten; it’s just that however well it’s written, it’s still at the mercy of being read, and how, and by who.
(Insert tangential essay/foaming rant here about how/why people insist on interpreting the Beatles and their dynamics through the shlocky paradigm of the Stereotypical Rock Band when they don’t remotely fit the archetypes, and hey, have you ever considered that humans and also human relationships are tangled and complex? And that humans are capable of resenting and loving each other at the same time? And that maybe a lot of the things John “I Said That But I Was Lying” Lennon has said should never be taken literally or at face value or as nothing but the timeless truth? Etc.)
All that being said, I will, as noted at the start, take whatever I do get. Remastered HD footage is just a nice thing to have, for one, and I’d be overjoyed to see video footage of some of the session audio I’ve clipped and transcribed in the past, if any of it even makes it into the final film. (Anything from January 13th especially and hell, the 24th and 25th too, but now I really am hoping for too much at this point. Now that I think of it, I should probably motivate myself to clip and transcribe more interesting bits and pieces from the sessions, in the lead up to the release of the film.)
My glib unserious (haha, unless...?) answer: Damn it, Peter Jackson, you took my job. 😭

Sonata - Update
Pairing: mShenko
Rating: M
Tags: Canon Divergent (Shepard & Kaidan pre-Me1 service history), Fake Relationship, Oh No - There Was Only One Bed, Mutual Pining (SO MUCH PINING)
POV Characters: Kaidan, Joker, Tali, Liara, Mrs. Alenko
Summary:
After the Battle of the Citadel, the Alliance calls the Normandy home to Vancouver to face an inquest. Things get...complicated. On every possible level. Especially when Kaidan discovers an unfortunate misunderstanding with his parents.
It’s @urrone / @makoparkingonly’s birthday today! So here, have a chapter. Many, many thanks to @sinvraal for beta-ing this mess.
Chapter 10 - Unsteady
Chapter Summary:
The chapter with the gala. :)
Read it:
Tali cranes her head, gazing at the banquet hall Mrs. Alenko had described as a “venue.”
It’s beautiful.
And big. The only space on the Rayya that comes close is the garden plaza, and it could fit inside this room. Everywhere she looks she finds more displays of elegant opulence, from the chandeliers to the drapes to the high arches ceilings. The precious metals in the filigree patterns alone would be far too valuable as raw goods for repairs and ship functions to ever dream of using them for decor.
With this kind of space on the flotilla they could make so many strides with agriculture.
And the food. The guests have not even arrived yet and food is everywhere, carried on uncovered platters by servers wearing ornate uniforms. The sheer volume of it could feed an entire ship. Even when Captain Kar'Danna oversees public gatherings, either the guest list is short or the menu is small. They simply cannot afford such lavish displays, nor would any time or effort be spent making it look pretty. Food on the flotilla is meant to make nutrient intake as efficient as possible. The morsels on these trays are too stunning to eat.
On the stage at the front of the ballroom, a live band tunes instruments she’s never seen before.Quarians tend to favor woodwind and stringed instruments. While there are strings involved on the stage, the sound they make is overpowering. Tali can’t imagine needing an even bigger space for music, but a reverberating boom from a canvas-strung cylinder makes the cavernous space feel small. She turns down the sensitivity of her external audio pickups.
To distract from the music, she fantasizes about the clothes she’ll see. Flowing dresses, colors, accessories that sparkle. As she waits for her new security script to load on her omnitool – she’s nicknamed it Love Bot – she fingers the scarf that Mrs. Alenko had given her. Purple with gold trim, a perfect match to her suit. It takes the sting out of not being able to wear a gown of her own.
Once the script is ready she links into a backdoor in the building’s security network and uploads it. It had been disappointingly easy to do. Not everything can be as challenging as hacking into a geth gestalt, but she can hope.
Beside her, Joker leans his head back against the wall and sighs. “You know, somehow I thought espionage would be more exciting than this.”
The sight of him in something other than an Alliance jumpsuit makes him look even more alien than usual. He keeps fussing with his sleeves and adjusting the collar, but when he leaves it alone and stops thinking about the fact he’s wearing it, it doesn’t look half bad. Except for the shoes. He’d refused to put on the dress shoes that went with it and is still wearing Alliance boots, claiming they’re more comfortable with the leg braces.
“Do you have the scrambler I asked for?” Tali asks.
He holds up the tiny device and waves it back and forth.
“Great. I’m going to need to install it near the main entrance.”
“What does this thing do, exactly?”
“It’ll create a fence around the venue that interferes with outgoing communications,” Tali replies.
Joker chews his lip. “Uh. Is that…safe? In case of emergency?”
“Joker. Do you really think I’m sloppy enough that I wouldn’t teach my programs to understand the difference between regular and emergency channels? I promise, if the building catches on fire we’ll be able to call for help.”
She’s got it nearly installed, just to the inside of the expansive, double doors that open into an anteroom outside the ballroom, when Mrs. Alenko finds them. She looks radiant - her navy blue dress is accentuated by a cape embroidered with a tapestry of constellations. When she walks it shimmers.
It’s beautiful.
Mrs. Alenko glances around with a nervous look in her eyes.
“Is it all ready?”
A green light blinks on the scrambler. “Yep,” Tali says. “Scrambler is online to take care of comms. The program I created to interfere with imaging and recordings is loaded into the security network, and will infect the omnitool of anyone it scans. Which means everyone who comes in.”
“What about the staff?”
Tali waves her omnitool. “I’m on it. I can run it remotely on any stragglers.”
Mrs. Alenko chews her lip. “And it’s all…benign?”
Her concern is touching. Tali has spent too much time around Shepard, whose concern with legalities starts and ends with ‘will it make this thing stop bothering me.’
“All it will do is…very conveniently overwrite any audio or video recordings anyone might try to make tonight,” Tali assures her.
“Tali rewrote a geth colossus,” Joker says. “If she says it’s good, you’re good.”
Mrs. Alenko nods, winding her finger up in her cape. Not likely she knows what a geth colossus is, but Joker’s confidence made it sound pretty impressive, at least. “Ok,” she says, without much certainty. “And you think all of this…” she gestures around the room, “will work?”
Joker jerks a thumb in Tali’s direction. “She’s the romance expert.”
Tali hums. “I think what the two of them need is a chance to just spend time around each other without the galaxy falling on their heads. The inquest is over. Everyone here will be having a good time. What you’re giving them is a refuge to do that. It’s very sweet of you.”
Mrs. Alenko smiles weakly.
“We just need to make sure they dance,” Tali says, tapping her helmet.
“Easy,” Joker says.
“Oh?”
Joker shrugs. “It’s Shepard. His competitive streak is bigger than Sovereign. Worst comes to worst, just bet him he won’t do it. He’ll be out there on the dancefloor before you can blink.”
Mrs. Alenko stifles a laugh.
A well-dressed gentleman pokes his head around the corner from the ballroom. “Hey, you.”
Tali looks at him in confusion, until she realizes he’s speaking to Mrs. Alenko.
“Everything good in the kitchen?” she asks.
He nods. Now that Tali is looking, she can see how clearly he resembles Kaidan. Cheekbones. Jawline. His thick mop of hair. Even the way they tilt their head is similar. “Band is all set, too. Ready to unlock the doors whenever you are.”
Mr. Alenko acknowledges both Joker and Tali. Joker, to her surprise, salutes. Mr. Alenko returns it with a crisp nod.
Strains of music filter into the anteroom from the stage. Tali peers out the glass doors and up at the sky. Thick and leaden with clouds, but the ground remains dry. She sighs.
“What’s the matter?” Joker asks.
“Just hoping for rain.”
In the meantime, she’ll settle for some fancy dresses.

Exploring the breakthrough battery that the US gave away to China. Get Surfshark VPN at https://surfshark.deals/undecided - Enter promo code UNDECIDED for 83% off and 3 extra months for FREE! When it comes to grid-scale energy storage, redox flow batteries (RFB) are one of the big competitors for lithium-ion batteries. In preliminary tests, vanadium redox flow batteries can be manufactured with longer lasting lives, be made more scalable, and are easier to recycle than other battery technologies. Yet, after investing millions of US tax dollars into a cutting edge flow battery formula, the American government basically gave it away to China, who is currently the lead producer of RFB. So, how did this invention flow out of the US? And why should we even care about redox flow batteries?

Week 2: Augmented Technologies
The Ultimate Display, Ivan Sutherland, Proceedings of IFIP congress, 1965
To think about the computer as a “mathematical wonderland” (1) and the display as a looking glass into such is a concept that opens unending possibilities to the way one thinks about the constraints of the physical world.
It is interesting that Sutherland remarks on the lack of multi-interactive means of looking through this metaphorical looking glass that is a computer. So, whilst there seems to be increasing interest and research into the application of additional sensory experiences (taste, smell, etc.) I agree that there is still little beyond the experience of the computer through audio, visuals, and haptics available to the larger majority of the public.
If indeed there was a way in which one could create a world, or indeed start with a room, where the “computer can control the existence of matter” (2) and the digital world materializes in the physical world, then there would be little to no limits to what people could create. But that makes me question just how much longer it would take to reach such a point? In fact, would we even want to reach that point? What rules would have to be imposed to prevent the abuse and misuse of such power? I think that when opening the gate to this boundless “wonderland” there are a lot of things to be wary of.
Man-Computer Symbiosis, J. C. R. Licklider, IRE Transactions on Human Factors in Electronics, volume HFE-1, 1960
Licklider’s paper was an interesting extension of the other papers (as I read this paper last) despite having been written in 1960, thus very much ahead of its time. I enjoyed Licklider’s explanation of the Man-Computer Symbiosis that he evaluates, especially in contrast to the concept of the “mechanically extended man” where mechanics were only there to help man and man is the singular organism.
Licklider’s paper centers around “the nonsymbiotic present and the anticipated symbiotic future” (7), as he discusses the dissimilarities and similarities in the capabilities of humans and computed machines, which he thinks could greatly enhance humans’ thinking and problem-solving. In doing so he evaluates the differences “in speed and in language” between both man and computed machines, which he calls “The language problem” and claims is the “most serious obstacle to true symbiosis” (8). I found it very interesting that Licklider focused on the language discrepancy between humans and computers, especially since he never could have predicted how rapidly programming languages has advanced now and how sophisticated speech user interfaces have become.
Licklider even predicts advancements, such as a ‘“thinking center” that will incorporate the functions of present-day libraries together with anticipated advances in information storage and retrieval” (7), scratching the very surface of what technological advancements in the processing power and storage capabilities of computers nowadays allow for. Thus, I agree that the improvements in efficiency and performance of computed machines have freed humans from more mechanical, repetitive work, allowing us more flexibility and creativity. With continued research into AI and HCI computers will soon be able to learn by themselves, and I think that like Licklider predicts machines will outdo the human brain in most functions.
A Survey of Augmented Reality, Rick van Krevelen and Ronald Poelman, Delft University, 2010
In contrast to the other readings, Krevelen and Poelman’s paper is an in-depth and up to date overview of AR developments and applications. To me it is interesting to see the gradual development, not only in AR technologies but also in the way that academic research and discourse surrounding such technologies shifts as we begin to open windows into “the looking glass” and reality and virtuality become intermeshed.
Some points that I found particularly interesting was the mention of the lack of development or even existence of olfactory and gustatory displays in terms of “modalities in human sensory input,” (2) which builds upon Sutherlands point and remains true to this day even.
Also, Krevelen and Poelman’s mention of the three basic ways to visually present an augmented reality stood out to me, as video see-through remains the most popular and widely used form of AR today (10 years after the paper was published) most likely due to the cheapness and easiness of implementation. Additionally, head-worn and hand-held projectors remain the most prominent uses of AR technology with the greater public within this decade and the increasing use of smartphones and interest in smart-glasses. Thus, I question whether projective or alternative AR forms, free from additional user accessories, are anywhere in the near foreseeable future.
The lack of diversity in AR forms,  the difficulty in accessibility for all, and an increasing concern for privacy amongst an ever-digitalizing world makes me agree with Krevelen and Poelman’s conclusion, in which they state that “AR has come a long way but still has some distance to go before industries, the military and the general public will accept it as a familiar user interface” (10).
