In my experience the summer holidays, though much welcomed, present a whole host of issues for struggling families. For many children their school is a haven too. Lots will eat their main meal of the day at Breakfast Club and lunchtime. Quite a few parents will discreetly enquire about additional support to help make ends meet in the holiday. I know some people will say that nutritious meals aren’t expensive and point to excessive spending on trainers and designer labels. These are very rare cases and those who air these views are bitter and out of touch. I’m really proud our team have been able to source Tesco vouchers which will go a longer way towards helping our families. Food poverty is the inability of individuals and households to obtain an adequate and nutritious diet. In London, more than 2.3 million Londoners live below the poverty line and 33% of adults have skipped meals to save money so that their children can eat. I received contact from a parent from a struggling household short on food. A request was made for a food parcel. With our resources depleted and no volunteers I faced a conundrum but agreed to take the request on - Something would come up. Within thirty minutes I’d had a chat with Pat and ended up getting a trolley full of delicious and nutritious foods. Thank you #stlukesprimaryschool #isleofdogs for coming to the rescue. Our super team at our book fair between #bookbikelondon and @hedgecock_centre was another great success as we welcomed many families to take home our FREE books. We were very pleased to have our own resident Author, Mustafa Abidin -Author of Space Teddy. Mustafa’s very first print run was exclusively shared with #homeless and refugee families. He gifted us a few more copies to share with our young readers. Reading is a gateway to new worlds and a superb way to engage with our community. Lots of rough sleepers and homeless people have experienced major trauma which has led to them losing everything, including being stripped bare of their dignity. Many have suffered a mental health breakdown, which as a result has led them spiralling towards the bottom of a dark pit. That’s just one single issue I’ve highlighted - There are countless more, abuse, addictions, exploitation etc. Today my friends in Barking Town Centre extended their thanks to #HCCFoodbank and the Local Sisters. @runningmad.co.uk #TheGreatMosqueRun medal for inspiration goes to the outstanding @nazbhai and #ActiveMusa Since the start of lockdown Naz has gone from his couch to completing 135 5K runs, 15 x 10K and 1 half marathon after deciding he needed to get active. His outstanding feats have led to huge awareness of the plight of the Rohingya through the charity BRTUK. An inspiration and a role model, Naz has been relentless and quietly consistent in volunteering to selflessly help others. #activemusa is following in Dad’s steps. He is a regular volunteer at the #littlelitterleague The 9 year old has his own YouTube channel, helps #bookbikelondon and has served as a volunteer at #HccFoodbank throughout the pandemic. Food poverty, often referred to as household food insecurity, can be triggered by a crisis in finance or personal circumstances, but may also be a long-term experience of not being able to access or have the facilities to prepare a healthy diet. @hedgecock_centre foodbank have no external funding but that doesn’t deter us from delivering excellent community service ice to our neighbours. Research by the Museum of Homelessness has revealed there was a 37% increase in homeless deaths in 2020. Interesting experience using #santandercycles to drop a carton of Corn Flakes. Almost crashed in front of a bunch of ladies and got stopped by the Old Bill. Police officers were interested in my juggling act and we shared a few laughs. They were decent coppers and I did get a thumbs up when I explained what #bookbikelondon was all about 🙂 @hedgecock_centre foodbank is run by volunteers. We run on goodwill.
