Chapter Thirty-Three: Want
| AO3 | FFN |
He looked happy. Healthy. Whole. Even if it was only for forty-nine seconds, she didn’t want to say anything to disrupt the moment.
This was the real Draco. Her favourite Draco.
She’d make it her life mission to settle his soul every chance she could because this was how he was supposed to be. Deserved to be. At peace.

HP: Snape is poor and a half-blood. It's incredibly important that Snape is poor and a half-blood. We have an entire book named after how Snape is a half-blood.
The Marauders fandom for whatever reason: this sign can't stop me cuz i can't read
My heart is cracking in two over Atyd...WHAT IS THIIISS? I couldn't get past the second chapter because of how Severus was being perceived. Why is he judging Remus based on his tattered, poor material, faded clothing? Why does he sound posh? Why is he all snotty? Who is this snobbish boy and why is he behaving this way?
I know that it was supposed to diverge from the cannon...But I didn't think it would diverge this much. I'm about to start reading whatever fanfic you've made because this - THIIISSS is embarrassing.
(also Remus cells cigarettes and is a bad boy in this? and why do I have a feeling Severus is a Pureblood in this fic...)
Edit: he IS a Pureblood...I think he's homophobic too, and he even has his own gang? And apparently, he's rich? Why is he the bully? I'm so confused 💔 time to crack open your work of art
Yeah, so from what I’ve been told, the author decides that Severus is a rapist and even tries to assault Lily or something like that. Honestly, it’s one of the main reasons why the newer parts of the fandom view the character as nothing less than a demon, and I think it’s atrocious. It’s a disgusting level of character bashing.

In defence of Remus Lupin
On behalf of James Potter who is unable to come to his aid on account of being dead.
I don’t for a second believe James would blame Remus for not checking in on Harry.
Firstly, Sirius proves in the way he questions Harry in POA that he believes Harry to be reasonably happy with his aunt and uncle (which is odd given Sirius sees him run away but nevermind). Why would Remus think any differently? He will have believed Harry to be well taken care of. Remus also trusted Dumbledore like nobody else. If Dumbledore believed Harry to be taken care of, why would Remus doubt it?
Remus should still have checked you say, and yes, had he been healthy, I’m sure James would have agreed.
Which brings me to secondly. Throughout the series we see how little Remus values himself. He doesn’t truly seem to believe it worthwhile to fight to keep his position as DADA teacher, when Harry and his class does. Remus believes that his wife and unborn child would be better off without him. And I’m sure he believed Harry to be better off without him too.
I’m sick of people not understanding how real this feeling of people being better off without him feels like to Remus. He’s shunned all his life for what he is. Even the more progressive people don’t want their children or loved ones around werewolves (as proven by Molly in OOTP at St. Mungo’s). Tonks becomes a target to the woman who does eventually kill her because she married Remus. (There’s a real question whether Tonks could have survived the battle of Hogwarts if Bella hadn’t been so set on murdering her). Would running away have helped Tonks or Teddy? No, but that’s missing the point. Remus believes it would. And Remus would have believed Harry was better off without him.
I can’t possibly know what James would have felt but from what we see of James and Sirius’ friendship with Remus, I think they knew better than anyone how inferior Remus felt, how dangerous and contaminated he believed himself to be.
This assertion is not completely unfounded because so did everyone else. As much as I hate the HBP scene when the whole room talks Remus into marrying Tonks, and as much as JKR does an awful job at selling their story as anything other than a doomed, random and forced relationship - the idea is meant to be that they are both in love with each other. The idea is meant to be that the other adults aren’t pressuring Remus into doing something he doesn’t want to do. It’s meant to be them knowing how much Remus will not date or marry the person he loves because he does not consider himself worthy of it. It should have been a scene that was one more data point on how much Remus’ condition affected his self-worth and life choices. A scene in which in the absence of Sirius and James and Dumbledore, the other people in Remus’ life step up to remind him he’s good enough!
In my view it fails to deliver this completely (and it’s a real tragedy as JKR finally takes time to elaborate on just how affected Remus is by his condition), but ignoring the execution for a second - if Minerva, Molly, Arthur and Tonks could see how much Remus would never believe himself good enough, then James and Sirius would know it a thousand times more.
Of course the confident fanon version is a different story. He should have and would have checked up on Harry. But hating canon Remus for not checking up on Harry shows a lack of empathy in my view. Rewriting the story so that Remus was forbidden to see Harry takes away from the tragedy that is Remus’ life: this idea that he believed the world would be better without him - when so many people know it would be infinitely worse.

Here's what, in my opinion, constitutes a GOOD Dramione fanfiction.
1. Hermoine Granger being an unapologetic BAMF. Genius level intellect, resourceful, exceptional strategist, ruthless, even dangerous.
Tumblr media
2. Draco being/having been a cruel bully.
3. Hermoine being/having been one of the few people who aren't intimidated by him at all. She needs to put him in his fucking place. Or needs to have done so in the past.
Tumblr media
4. Draco being brilliant and highly competent in his own right.
Tumblr media
5. Draco's redemption being brought about by his curiosity regarding Muggles, his innate morality causing him to understand that what his family is doing is wrong.
Tumblr media
6. Draco's redemption NOT being a result of his attraction towards Hermione. His fascination with her can be among the things that spur his change of heart, but it should not be the primary reason.
7. Hermoine should not be allowe herself to give Draco a chance just because he's hot. She can find him attractive, but should give him the time of day only AFTER she starts noticing small changes in his attitude.
Tumblr media
8. If the story is set several years after thr war, Draco should have already overcome his prejudices, and should be genuinely remorseful.
9. Draco understanding Hermione in ways that Ron and Harry cannot. Making her feel appreciated in ways that no one else has.
Tumblr media
9. Ron bashing, if done at all, should be based on things that are true to canon. For example, Ron is sometimes selfish and insensitive towards Hermione, but he would never physically hurt her.
Tumblr media
10. Draco's relationship with Harry and Ron developing slowly and organically. They don't become friends quickly, but they also don't remain bitter enemies at the end. At the very least, their equation should be one of mutual respect, if not an actual friendship.
A few fanfics that meet these criteria.
1. The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy (Deathly Hallows rewrite. Draco joins the Order and helps hunt Horcruxes.)
2. From Wiltshire with love (Deathly Hallows rewrite. Spy Draco, Handler Hermione)
3. Metanoia (series rewrite from Goblet of Fire)
4. Harmonia Nectere Passus (HBP and Deathly Hallows rewrite. A two parter)
5. Remain Nameless (set ten years after the war. Both Draco and Hermione are still healing from their trauma, and find comfort in each other.)
6. Draco Malfoy and the mortifying ordeal of being in love (set fifteen years after the war. Is everything a romance novel should be)
7. The choices we make (HBP and DH rewrite)
8. Escape (Draco helps Hermione escape Malfoy Manor and joins the Horcrux hunt)
9. Perfectly in Pieces (DH rewrite)
10. Chosen (HBP and DH rewrite)

what are some really outstandingly written and creative hp fics. (please no wholeslae canon rewrites tho. AUs are fine).
Here are a few fics that I find to be especially outstanding and creative and well written.
Amulette d'amour by The_Carnivorous_Muffin, Vinelle (words: 58,092 | not rated | Tom Riddle/Alphard Black)
Tom is commissioned to repair a magical amulet.
Why I rec it: Listen. This fic is absolutely phenomenal. It has a fascinating and well developed exploration of wizarding society, brilliant and highly complex and multifaceted characterization, and very original and unique plotting. It's extraordinarily well written and is both thought provoking and dramatic as well as laugh out loud funny in places. It's not a fic premise or pairing I would ever have imagined but it's legitimately an outstanding piece of writing that will live rent free in your head.
At Your Service by Faith Wood (faithwood) ( words: 95,752 | rating: E drarry )
Hogwarts students are in danger; Harry is determined to save them all. There’s only one thing he knows for certain: Draco Malfoy is somehow involved.
Why I rec it: This is the closest to book 8 that I've seen. Stylistically it really recalls the feel and structure of the canon books and it has a lot of really cool plot developments and world building. It follows on nicely from the rest of the series and expands on whats there. It feels like a book 8 where drarry happens.
the pleasure, the privilege by asterismal (asterisms) (words: 19,901 | rating: M | Harry/Voldemort | CW: Horror, Extremely dark themes)
It begins with Vernon Dursley’s body, dead across the table. In which Voldemort is dosed with amortentia, and nothing is better for it.
Why I rec it: It takes a crack plot premise and runs with it and really makes it work in a serious way. This fic is DARK and very unique and creative in its plot resolution. It kept me on the edge of my seat and is incredibly innovative and dramatic.
Running on Air by eleventy7 ( words: 74,876 | rating: T | drarry)
Draco Malfoy has been missing for three years. Harry is assigned the cold case and finds himself slowly falling in love with the memories he collects.
Why I rec it: Brilliantly well done characterization and amazing world building and plot. The relationship and characters all develop so naturally and the writing is incredibly beautiful. It never feels rushed and yet you can't put it down.
Denude by Faith Wood (faithwood) (words: 4,172 | rating: E | drarry | CW: Underage)
This is a HBP AU. It's set a few days after the Sectumsempra scene and takes the story in another direction, asking the question: "What if the Sectumsempra scene had a greater impact on Harry and Draco?" Harry and Draco are sixteen. In medias res beginning. Non-linear storytelling.
Why I rec it: Stylistically it feels like it could be taken out of book 6. The characterization and dialogue is so spot on and its very emotionally evocative.
Sparkling Cyanide by Asenora (words: 1,415 | rating: G | Gen | complete)
Tom Riddle had nothing to do with the death of Hepzibah Smith. Hokey had just had enough of being a slave.
Why I rec it: Amazingly creative world building and premise and characterization. It feels brand new and yet wholly plausible and right.

Harry, Albus and King's Cross
I've seen a lot of fanfics over the years that (when sending Harry temporarily to the afterlife) treat Dumbledore's appearance at King's Cross as an error, or something that The Fandom As A Whole Thinks Is Bad. Not only is the latter a false idea (hi, meet me. I'm still in the fandom for some godforsaken reason lol), but it also kind of rubs me the wrong way to see fanfic-AU!Harry meet instead with Lily (whom he doesn't know and whose accurate shade he probably wouldn't be able to summon to the in-between), Sirius (who is the best alternate contender but isn't the loss weighing most heavily on Harry in DH), Remus (...lol. nah), Death itself (personifying a metaphysical concept to give it more gravity or screentime is a departure from the themes of the series, fight me) or someone/something else.
It was always going to be Albus who met Harry. Not because he's a hallucination. Not because he's the personification of Death or whatever. (Those two ideas are debatable and could be argued, but they're not the point. That's not why.) The why is because Albus Dumbledore is who Harry had come to rely on the most over the entire series. Before Sirius. In spite of Remus. Before his Head of House. Over the flaky government. Albus was Harry's mentor and one of Harry's many flawed father-figures; he was the most enduring person present in Harry's adolescence; and he was the person whose guidance Harry sought almost constantly over the entire final book when he couldn't get it anymore.
A good portion of Harry's character is about the losses he experienced before he was ever aware of them, and about the losses he experiences once he is aware of who he is and what he must do. Albus' loss slots neatly into the latter category and gives us a front-row seat to how Harry grapples with losing someone so important to him.
(Emphasis on "front-row seat" because for some reason, That Woman decided to have Harry insta-heal from losing Sirius in HBP with only the briefest single-sentence reference to off-screen grieving for a few weeks. Like. I realize he only knew Sirius for 2.5 years, but Harry loved him, JKR. What the fuck?)
But yeah. Tangents aside, it was always going to be Albus who met Harry in the fake King's Cross. Sirius died in an inexplicable way which had to be explained both to the readers and to Harry (recall Harry saying "He's only just gone through!" because he thinks the Veil is a curtain, and Remus having to be the one who says "There's nothing you can do, Harry... nothing... he's gone." And although I wasn't active in the fandom then, others can co-sign that there were LOTS of "Sirius Lived/Sirius Will Come Back!" conspiracy theories IRL following the release of book 5). By contrast, Harry watched Albus die. He knew what happened and how irrevocable it was from the moment it occurred.
Most of Harry's conflict and disillusionment with Albus in the final book is the equivalent of a pressure cooker, building until the "explosion" of numb betrayal that happens in The Prince's Tale and is then promptly reversed in King's Cross. Throughout Deathly Hallows, it is Dumbledore's absence which frustrates Harry, confuses him, unmoors him. Dumbledore's final return to Harry in chapter 35 is the circle closed; the wound cauterized. Explanations are finally had; information is finally available to Harry, who thrives on being informed so he can make the decisions which most align with his character. Once he has this information (information he could only have had confirmed from someone actually crossing from the land of Death to meet with him), once he understands that Dumbledore wanted him to live but made the painful choice to lead him to Death in the name of destroying Voldemort, Harry makes the choice to forgive Dumbledore for his part in the pain and misunderstandings that have plagued his life.
In order to have someone else meet Harry at the crossroads between living and dying, you have to basically rewrite not only the end of Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, but also a significant portion of every other book. If it's an AU, have at—I might even give it a read. For meta discussions though? I say a third time: Albus was always going to be the one waiting for Harry at King's Cross.

hello 😞
um can you explain the reasons you like snape?
Hi!
Sure.
I can't in fact remember when I started liking Snape, it happened as I was growing up with the movies, though I do know that by the time Half-Blood Prince came out in 2009 he was already well established as my favorite character, as I had friends take photos of me near a cardboard cutout of him at the cinema (I was 13 at that time).
So, I can't pinpoint what is the one thing that made me like him. However, I know that I started really loving his character more deeply when I read the books right after seeing the HBP movie. I discovered just how different he was in the books, and how much better his character was.
To answer your question... I love everything about him, including his many flaws.
He's hilarious, he has some of the funniest lines in the series. His sarcasm made me laugh as a young teen, even and probably, specially because it was directed at teenagers of the same age I was.
He's mysterious, for 95% of the series we have no idea what he thinks, what he's doing and why he's doing it. We just know that something is going on, but we don't know what. It makes him intriguing and makes you want to know more.
He's brave, and selfless. He risks his life on a regular basis once Voldemort gets back, he agrees to mercy kill Dumbledore, effectively getting himself branded as the second most hated man in the country and even by people who at minimum respected him (colleagues he'd been working with for 15 years, people who saw him as a friend), and he expects nothing in return. He dies a gruesome and painful death, though thankfully not alone, knowing that everyone who'd ever liked him, that everyone in the whole world, despises his guts because he had to do what no one else could to save thousands of lives.
He's petty, and cruel. I won't teach anyone anything by saying that Snape is a bully as a teacher, and that he enjoys it. Yet, this is also one of the reasons I like him, because it creates an amazing juxtaposition with the previous point. He's a hero... and an asshole who makes children cry. He will do everything in his power and more to ensure that his students are alive and stay that way, but damn if he won't crush their spirit in the meantime as well.
He's skilled. He's a potions genius, who was rewritting recipes as a teen. He invented spells also as a teen, both being things that even Hermione never attempted to do. He thinks outside the box, and he's an excellent duelist, but he relies on his intelligence more than rough power and fighting prowess.
He's traumatised. Snape has one of the worst childhood/backstories of the books. He was abused as a child by his father, grew up watching him abuse his mother, he lived in such extreme poverty that the Weasleys would look like the royal family to him. Then he got to Hogwarts, and we can see how excited he is to finally go somewhere he won't be forced to hide who he is, to be somewhere he belongs... except he meets his future bullies on the train and reality catches up to him fast.
He's "relentlessly bullied" for the next 6 years ish, with no escape. And yes, teenage Snape was no saint, he was no angel, but no child deserves this kind of torment. Every single day we hear of teenagers killing themselves because of bullying. As an adult he shows obvious signs of trauma from what the Marauders did to him, and it's very sad to see.
I need to stop at one point because I don't think you were asking for a whole ass novel about Snape, but there's so so much more to say about him. I'll just link to @said-snape-softly's answer to a post recently that was asking roughly the same thing, where they explain why they love Snape and added a lot of great metas to help you or anyone else better understand his character.

Fic Year in Review 2024
Tagged by the wonderful @blitheringmcgonagall, thank you! ❤️❤️
I published much less fic this year than the previous ones - only 19,213 words, or 15 short oneshots. All new stuff, except about half of The Three-Minute Initiative which had been started in Jilytober 2023 (and still needed some rewriting).
There are two other major projects that I worked on during the year - my multichapter AU Revanche, currently at ~17k, and my long oneshot semi-crackfic Oh My God, She's Insane, currently at ~4k - so I have more than double of what I published, to be released hopefully in 2025!
It's been a year with ups and downs in my writing mood - mostly downs, it felt, but then I've also written some of my favourite works ever this year! I also branched out a bit, in style and content, which I think did me good. I got several Jily Awards - more than I ever dared to expect - and most importantly, I got a lot of love throughout the year from all of you! My stats might not have been significantly high for most of my fics, but your comments and support have been invaluable ❤️❤️❤️
Breakdown of my fics under the cut!
In chronological order:
Fixed Luck (1.3k, rated T): Canon compliant, Order era. Jily deal with addiction to Felix Felicis. Angsty af, no happy ending. One of my favourites of the year. Favourite Angst award.
The Three-Minute Initiative (2k, rated T): Written as a late entry for Jilytober 2023. Muggle AU, Lily goes to a speed dating event and gets to meet with all of the Marauders in turn. Flirty and fun.
Drunk With Power (746 words, rated G): James the insufferable Head Boy. Written as a fun way to celebrate my appointment as a @jilymicrofics Discord mod. Also flirty and fun and a favourite of mine.
The Roe Deer And The Knight (2.1k, rated G): Fairy tale style Jily for March 2024 @jilychallenge. I LOVED writing in this style and reworking Jily's story to fit the standard fairy tale tropes and format. Another favourite.
Iacta Alea Est (744 words, rated G): Julius Caesar AU in honour of the Ides of March. It fit surprisingly well! Slight crack and angst.
The Big Little Moments (2.5k, rated M): Jily's wedding afternoon - their first day in their new home. Super fluffy with light smut. A delight to write and a top-tier favourite. Favourite Fluff award.
Attention (300 words, rated G): SWM from James's POV, written for James's birthday.
so much blood. (268 words, rated T): The Sectumsempra scene from HBP, from Draco's POV. Written as an exercise in second person POV. It was unexpectedly fascinating to write!
Anemoia (748 words, rated G): Missing moment from the beginning of HBP. A hint of Hinny as Harry goes through the photo album with his parents' pictures.
Crush (712 words, rated G): Written for the Mystery May Microfic 2024 event. Canon compliant, Hogwarts era. Mary Macdonald wants to find out who is the mystery person her best friend Lily has a crush on. Fluffy and fun.
Verses Written In '74 (3.1k, rated E): Sirius/Lily, Sirius POV. Lily spends a night with Sirius - her ex-boyfriend, best friend and best man to her wedding, who will always be in love with her. Angsty, smutty, super atmospheric. A favourite in the most self-indulgent way.
The Lady Of Kini (963 words, rated G): Inspired by my holiday in Syros and the statue of the Mermaid Madonna - an AU where Lily is the mermaid patroness of the coast, and James is the sailor she's supposed to save from drowning. Poetic and atmospheric, a piece I've also shared with many of my offline friends. I love it.
crawl home (877 words, rated G): Written for the @jilytoberfest 2024 Masquerade event and based on Hozier's Work Song. James dies to protect Lily and Harry, and his death saves them - but no grave can hold his body down. Angst with a happy ending, very atmospheric in an eerie, creepy sort of way. Another top-tier favourite. Favourite Canon Divergent Short, Favourite Angst and Favourite Microfic awards.
The Professional (941 words, rated T): Written for Jilytoberfest 2024, prompt: “Maybe we can find out what the hell your problem is over dinner sometime”. I always thought a corporate Jily AU enemies to lovers would be the ideal setting for this quote!
All right, Potter? (1.8k, rated G): A very belated entry for Jilyweek 2024, prompt: Flip the Script. SWM but Lily is the bully and James is the prefect. It was a fun challenge to play with the inverted dynamics and still make it all fit the characters as we know them - it took some effort but I think it worked in the end!
My plans for 2025:
Finish Oh My God, She's Insane, and either also finish Revanche or make enough progress on it to start posting.
I have signed up for the @greenhouse-seven Be My Valentine Exchange and the Jilymicrofics Annual Fic Exchange and I'm eager to receive my assignments for them! So at least two fics to be expected in February.
I have also signed up for the January Jilychallenge, theme: Destiny. No pressure!
I have about 1.5k written on my November 2024 Jilychallenge fic (tentative title: Couples Therapy) but I've hit a block on it. Hopefully I'll finish it sometime during the year.
I definitely have plans to participate in this year's Mystery Microfic May as well!
Whatever else strikes my fancy! Whether an old WIP or a new idea.
Tagging @arliedraws, @neverenoughmarauders, @ksarasara, @harryissuchalittleshit!

Chapter Thirty-Two: Volatile
| AO3 | FFN |
Because no matter how confused she was, how complicated everything between them had become, she knew he would do anything for her: defend her from slimy snakes, carry her books, pour her juice. And, in turn, she would do anything for him.
Because, apparently, it was Hermione and Draco against the world.
Nothing else mattered.

My Top 10 (actually 9) Dramione Fic Reccemmendations:
I am not a terribly avid reader of angst-filled fics (sorry, Manacled fans). This list will be mostly romcom / fluffy, major slow burns, and Draco POV. I have included a few more serious fics, but they are just so well written / interesting, that they made my list. Without further ado, and in no particular order, my Top 9 Dramione Fics:
1. To one one's surprise, and not being overhyped at all (I'm completely serious), is Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love. This one needs no description due to its popularity, so I will only add to the hype. I have always been a fan of adventure-romance (e.g. Romancing the Stone, Princess Bride, Stardust, Love and Monsters, Shrek, A Knight's Tale, and, not to get repetitive, The Lost City), but this was the first fanfiction I read with such dedication to an interesting, funny, and, at times, suspenseful story. I also love seeing Draco fall first and his unreliable narration in Hermione's feelings for him. I adore the characterization of / relationships between characters (not just Draco and Hermione) as well as the way the author develops the existing magic system. It is definitely a slow burn with misunderstandings. I'm not a big fan of misunderstandings after they are together because I think it's lasy, and I will stop reading it. In this fic, however, the author makes sure that the 'will they won't they' isn't over done.
2. A Cosmology of Blacks, Malfoys, and Assorted Individuals. This one is in process, but updates are consistent, and I am hooked. Draco POV only. Not only does this fic have the best name, it also includes many anecdotes of Black history (particularly focused on Narcissa, Andromeda, and Bellatrix) while also tying in a romance plot. The story begins with Andromeda confronting Narcissa, and the Black family to be reunited. Draco meets Hermione again for the first time post-graduation, but something is wrong with Hermione's magic. They slowly become friends and Draco develops feelings. This one is on the angsty side, but it's nothing dark or war-based. It is decidedly cosy. I absolutely love any fic that casts a parallel between Andromeda and Ted and Draco and Hermione (I also love supportive Harry who compares them to his parents).
3. The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy. This is another popular one that deserves the hype. This one was outside my comfort zone as it is fairly heavy on the angst. BUT I think it is a really imaginative retelling of DH. If you are unfamiliar, the author rewrites the end of HBP wherein Draco accepts Dumbledore's offer of help. He is then forced to accept the protection of people who hate him and whom he hates. This is a true Enemies to Friends to Lovers story. It has a mixed POV. This story is full of mystery, suspense, plot twists, romance, and angst. This is another one that explores the magic system in an interesting way.
4. It Happened in Egypt is another romcom adventure fic. It is funny, mysterious, and action-packed. In this story, Hermione is in Egypt on a 'holiday' and runs into Draco who is drunk and has been robbed (no wallet or wand). As the author says, this fic is a love story to the Nile and Egyptian Mythology. Great for history lovers. And while this story is a relatively quick burn, there is still a major chunk of mutual pining.
5. Scary Partner Privilege is another in progress piece, but it is so creative. It is Draco POV. He and Hermione (a no-nonsense-to-the-point-of-rudeness cop) are paired as elite aurors. Each chapter is a different case like in Brooklyn 99 or other cop shows with the overall plot of their tumble into romance. This Hermione is a complete BAMF, and Draco is a darling.
6. Distance is a split POV fic. Hermione is a new Unspeakable and Draco is an auror who hasn't been given a real case. They end up teaming up to investigate a mysterious magical figurine. Another adventure fic set in the Indus Valley. Such a fun concept. Another one that is a good read for history lovers.
7. Lavender Scones and Second Chances is the final in progress story I have on this list. This story is mostly here for vibes (cosy) because the research that brought them together is more periphery than anything. But it is still a sweet story that I am excited to watch develop.
8. Love and Other Historical Accidents is Jane Austen meets Harry Potter. Hermione and Draco get sent back to the late Georgian / early Regency period in magical Wiltshire. Lots of classic Austen tropes and plot lines. It is an established dynamic between them, and Draco is already in love with Hermione.
9. Soft As It Began is a unique story wherein Harry vanished the day after the Battle of Hogwarts. Almost 5 years later, Hermione, with help from Draco (they are investigative journalists), travels around Europe looking for him. This story plays with the story of The Three Brothers and the Deathly Hallows. I just love all the characterizations in this fic.

theories for survival is a talent
short bare-bones facts for anyone that hasn't heard/read the fic yet: canon divergence, hp fic, incomplete, current wc > 500k, drarry, soulmate au, canon rewrite-esque currently placed in HBP year six, about midway I think? REALLY AMAZING
I have no clue if any of this is going to make sense and most of it is probably going to be so so wrong but (SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ UP TO CH 33 YET)
theories for siat atm:
the smiths and abotts both have a claim to hufflepuff's cup, we know a smith was the last one to have it in canon and hannah's being kinda obvious with her questions to draco
I always thought bones might be another descendant bc I've seen it in other fics but something tells me it's going to be a family line with more persian roots bc of suren // possible link to slytherin
CALLED IT I was so sure Lily was Hortensia, I wasn't expecting it to be both that's so cool!!!!
hints to voldie getting stronger and more whole the more horcruxes they nab and that's why dumbledore was roasted by snape for being scared he wouldn't be able to defeat him at full power, but hey they did it in canon so maybe? there's smth there?
so the merpeople definitely know about harry being a horcrux. going to have to reread the series bc I can't remember who else knows
blaise's secret could be SO MANY THINGS atp I don't have a solid theory yet
I was kinda wondering if zaira's soulmate was amelia bones for a hot minute and she was glamouring a soulmark, I would totally peg zaira as knowing who her soulmate is and just. not doing anything about it
flrjflkjfngjd;odg im gonna have to reread to remember what the rest of my theories were I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH
if anyone has other theories. please add them? I don't get to talk to anyone about how excited I am abt this fic help a guy out TT

Summary: I started to write this before HBP came out, and crossed my fingers that HBP wouldn't make it totally non-canon. No such luck, I'm afraid. This, therefore, is an AU story, where (SPOILER) still teaches (SPOILER), (SPOILER) didn't try to (SPOILER), (SPOILER) didn't succeed in (SPOILER), (SPOILER) never dated (SPOILER), and most importantly, (MAJOR ENDING SPOILERS) never happened.

7. Things Worth Knowing - 165k by Femme (femmequixotic), noeon (noe)
Rating: Explicit
Summary: After the Battle, Harry thinks he's left Hogwarts for good, but Minerva insists that all students return for an Eighth Year if they wish to sit for NEWTs in the spring, and Harry needs those NEWTs to go into the Aurors. Draco's just grateful not to be in Azkaban. Or the Manor. He's hoping he can steer clear of Potter this year and grapple with his own problems. Unfortunately for him, Potter appears to be one of those problems. And that's not even addressing the fact that Potter's got serious issues of his own, which Draco realises as he's forced to share an Eighth Year dormitory room and several classes with the Gryffindor Git. If only they can make it through the year without killing each other, it should be all right, shouldn't it?
8. Eclipe - 287k by Mijan
Rating: Teen and Up
Summary: "You're dead, Potter… I'm going to make you pay…"
Draco swore his revenge on Harry for Lucius's imprisonment, and Harry all but laughed at him. But Draco is planning more than schoolyard pranks this time. The old rivalry turns deadly when Draco abducts Harry for Voldemort. It's the perfect plan, guaranteeing revenge, power, and prestige, all in one blow. But when Draco's world turns upside down, the fight to save himself and Harry begins, and the battle will take them both through hell and back. If they come back.

11. Waiting By An Open Door - 30k words by Femme (femmequixotic), noeon (noe)
