soooo this was meant to be part of a challenge where I draw every wof character but I'm not too happy with how it turned out + I think I want to take it into a different direction

so enjoy a Hazel! I always imagine her with glasses so she has glasses now (I also like to think SapWings and PoisonWings are distinct variations of LeafWings, with the former being more tree like)

It’s so funny how in most fandoms I’m in, I have a set ship, and I’m not really a multishipper. I have my favorites and stick to them. WoF, however….

So, I ship Sky with Sunny, but I also ship him with Snowfall. But I also ship Snowfall with Lynx. I also kind of like Lynx with Winter though- But I also like Winter with Turtle. And Turtle with Kinkajou. And Kinkajou with Moon. And Moon with Qibli. But I also like Moon with Turtle. And I kind of like Turtle with Blue. But there’s also Blue and Cricket!! Also, I like Snowfall with Hazel. But I also like Hazel with Mandrake a little, but I mostly headcanon Mandrake to be aroace. And I also really like Tsunami and Riptide, but I also kind of like the idea of Clay and Riptide. But I also like Clay and Peril!!

I am a mess lmao.

Okay so now there are two of you pointing it out but I'm not familiar with the fandom.

Here's my step to step for not using this and then reconsidering :

It is used in the Wings of Fire wiki (which is sadly not a proof that it is official art and not uncredited fanart, when you look at some wiki pages but I don't know enough about WoF to say it's the same here)

It is said it's a "reference by SpaceshipEarth"

They say they're 19 and studying graphic design so I didn't think it was official artworks ? (Or they hadn't changed their bio in a while but internet is a big tool for art professionals so that'd seem unlikely if they're still active here ?)

I saw other artists made references too for the website, using similar transparent LeafWing lineart

I'm quite sure the name of the graphic novels' artist isn't here and assumed a fan with an artistic background started the trend of making WoF transparents or something.

Two of you telling me it's official art made me look it up again.

I found Joy Ang's name on the wikia. She did most of the US WoF official artwork, but not the graphic novels (that's Mike Holmes, apparently). She's drawn the bases for all dragons' types.

So, I may use her work next time if I need Hazel or Willow's art, especially her generic Leafwing

The art used on Hazel's wiki page doesn't appear in the list the artist made of their reusable works -it's not in their 'don't use without asking owners' permission category either but if I've not been invited to use it clearly, I don't use fanworks and by rule of thumb I don't use fanart in first rounds if no artist has suggested their own work. I usually start asking around toward round 2 because it's less work and I know I already have another option if the artist changes their mind

Anyway, that was quite the explanation behind my thought process but most of a poll runner's work is hidden work so I thought that way you'd all get a glimpse at it.

You understand better why I ask help with looking for official art whenever I post brackets, now, don't you ? (/lh) When you don't know the source material well and podcasts/books/other usually unillustrated media are involved, it can be quite a bit of work (like checking covers one by one to make sure the character you're looking for isn't on it)

(This is not an attempt at discouraging new poll runners. It's doable, but know it takes time, energy and patience. It's also rewarding ! I talked to a lot of lovely people I didn't know and my Google sheets' skills are gradually improving. My editing skills are still a mess but that's a nice occasion to try. My people skills... well that's still a work in progress)
