Been thinking a lot about the whole "Alastor redemption arc" as a possibility for Hazbin seasons future (2 or onwards, this has the potential to be a several-season narrative). I think, in order for Alastor to really change in character for the better (intentional or not) he has to completely fall apart first. Whatever corner he's been backed into by his deal will probably make him more and more desperate to do absolutely anything and use everyone he knows however he feels he needs to to free himself. And I mean ANYTHING - this guy is not only a psychopathic cannibalistic demon serial killer, but also a soul-owning overlord with serious control issues. He could go on a pretty dark spiral to feel like he's staying in control when he's really losing all semblance of it - especially when he considers himself an unredeemable villain, and he's proud of it (it makes him untouchable, or at least feel that way).
Bridges are going to get burned with the main cast, and he might destroy just about every good relationship he's built. But this is Hell, and if he's in a soul contract with either of the people who we all suspect, it's not going to go well for him, and he's going to hit rock-bottom when he realizes he no longer has any control AND no one to turn to.
But that's where Charlie comes in.
Yeah, she's going to be mad. The betrayal will sting, especially when you can see just how much she wants to see the good in Alastor. And I can't imagine we won't make it through Alastor's downfall arc without him cashing in his favor in some twisted way - even if it doesn't hurt anyone else, it'll hurt Charlie. She won't want to forgive him, and she'll distance herself dramatically, likely just enough for Alastor to go and get himself into trouble.
But Charlie (and her crew) has that unfortunate all-forgiving, all-accepting streak that gets her into trouble so often... when it really matters, she'll do whatever she can to save him because that's how she is. And because Alastor is Alastor, that might be finally enough to get through to him - somebody helping him out of a situation that he would have abandoned anyone else in, assuming that they'd leave him without a care because he betrayed them (because that's what he would do). And yet here she is, stubborn demon child, back to save him for what reason?? Out of the goodness her heart?? No one in hell does things like that. It's HELL.
Ridiculous. Impossible.
Or maybe not, because here she is.
((Bonus brainrot: I can also see like a reverse Stockholm lol (getting close to people to use them and then WHOOPS accidentally getting close to them for real). He already admitted some level of fondness (which, for Alastor, is saying something) to Niffty in that last balcony scene, probably because he views her like Pentious's egg boys - someone small and insignificant to everyone (at least pre-Adam stabbing lol) who spews crazy things all the time. He can tell her things because it doesn't matter if she repeats them; everyone takes what she says with a grain of salt.)

Alastor Episodes 7 and 8 Thoughts
These two episodes really gave us a lot in regards to Alastor and I cannot wait to see where they go with him in season 2. What I find most fascinating about what they established with him in these episodes is how I think this perfectly sets up Alastor to directly challenge the show’s main themes of redemption.
Tumblr media
Alastor is the only character in the main cast that I think could effectively challenge Charlie’s idea of redemption by making her face the question of “where the line for who can be redeemed and who is too far gone is?”
Tumblr media
Even Vaggie and her past as an exorcist couldn’t challenge Charlie’s ideals in the same way because Vaggie so clearly wants to be better and is trying to be better. She could only challenge Charlie’s idea of who could be redeemed. She couldn’t truly challenge the line of when someone is too far gone unlike Alastor.
And to explain this I'll just jump right in.
It’s clear these two episodes were meant to show a shift in Alastor and Charlie’s relationship in some capacity. It’s a bit more of a subtle shift than with the other characters, but I think it’s setting up this future conflict well for the limited time the show has.
Tumblr media
At the start Charlie doesn’t think Alastor cares and calls him out on this. She directly states that she believes he enjoys the suffering. He refutes her idea of him by stating she doesn’t know what he feels. He purposefully hides his feelings behind a smile as a sign of control. (The first shift. It tells her there’s more beneath the surface)
Tumblr media
Then Alastor helps Charlie enlist cannibal town and says he wants to mentor her in the song. This is more than the initial indifference and humor he got out of Charlie at the beginning. There’s an interest in seeing Charlie grow and being a part of it that wasn't there before. And, with Alastor helping Charlie here, trust is being built (at least on Charlie's end).
Tumblr media
Then Alastor talks to Niffty (who he is clearly fond of) and admits he finds the group enjoyable to be around. He says he could grow accustomed to them after Niffty says she really likes them almost in agreement with her. He's very candid with Niffty and doesn't seem to feel the need to hide his emotions around her. They appear to be on the same wavelength.
Tumblr media
And finally, Charlie is upset when she thinks that Alastor died against Adam and hugs him happily when he returns. In Charlie’s eyes Alastor has been helpful and risked himself and his power to protect the hotel. This is a true shift in their relationship on Charlie's end.
This bond is necessary because if (at the very least) Charlie doesn't care about Alastor then he won't be able to truly challenge her idea of redemption and the show implies it doesn't just go one way. It's just obscured.
To explain what I mean I want to look at Alastor's role in the final battle and that moment when he is alone after he escapes.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the battle he felt like the trump card he should have been. He makes the exorcists, before Adam destroys his shield, look like a joke. And he gives Adam a run for his money before he becomes overconfident and lets his guard down. He didn’t expect Adam to bounce back and have that much power left to show. He was caught completely off guard and paid the price.
Tumblr media
And instead of staying to face the end with the rest of the people in the hotel Alastor opts to save himself. He places himself first. When he leaves he seems almost smug, spouting off a one liner and smiling as he sinks into the shadows. It seems calculated and calm, but alone is a completely different story. This moment shakes Alastor and that moment alone puts his fight against Adam and decision to flee in a different light.
In this moment when he's alone he starts to lose it, saying there has to be a way out. This isn’t where things end. He will come out on top.
He can feel his control over the situation slipping. His power and notoriety has been challenged left and right this season. First Vox, then Lucifer, then the loan sharks, now Adam. It’s one right after the other. And Adam almost killed him.
Tumblr media
He’s struggling to grasp onto what little control he has left by forcing himself to keep on his smile and it calls back to the beginning of episode 7 when he says to Charlie that just because she sees a smile doesn't mean she knows how he really feels. His smile is a sign of control. And even in this moment you can see that last bit of control slipping. And it’s left him even more desperate for his freedom than before.
The Radio Demon was introduced almost as if he was an all powerful entity and now he is being brought back down to earth and he’s raging against it, barely keeping it just below the surface.
But there’s even more to his breakdown than just his pride. The lines “Great Alastor, altruist, died for his friends. Sorry to disappoint that is not where this ends. I’m hungry for freedom like never before. The constraints of my deal surely have a backdoor.” strongly imply that he really does care for the residents of the hotel more than he wants to admit even to himself.
Tumblr media
He is freaking out because he got too close to dying trying to protect and help people that he never thought he would care at all about and he’s doubling down on his plans from before.
Tumblr media
His immediate desperation to be free implies he is at the hotel because he is forced to be there, but he’s desperate to get out of the contract because he doesn’t like how it’s changing him. Alastor has always put himself first and here he is almost dying trying to protect this hotel and it's rattled him even more deeply than the blow to his pride.
I feel like they know exactly what Alastor can mean thematically and they want you to know he’s a villain while seeding hints there could be change under the surface (ones that Alastor himself is afraid of and wants to double down against). There’s a balancing act going on with him and it seems they really do want to challenge the idea of redemption with him. Not just Charlie’s, but his own as well.
Alastor is still in my opinion the best written character in the series. There’s just so much to unravel with him and he’s the most fun to try and dissect to me. I can’t wait to see what they have planned for him in season 2.

The thing I love the most about Alastor is that we can't truly know what to think of him, if he is being truly manipulative or if there's a genuine undertone behind any of his words, and that allows people to interpret him differently from one person to another. Like "oh he's being so sweet and supportive", to "no actually he's just saying what people want to hear because he's an evil manipulator". Maybe some fans are being too trustful, just like Charlie, and falling into his lies. BUT maybe there's a true genuine undertone to everything he says, maybe he can be a sweetie behind his evil mask. And maybe he'll turn out redeemable. Or not at all. Who knows?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His character could go in two completely different directions in the next seasons and we have no way of telling how he'll turn out. It's still fully open because he showed he can be awful and evil and manipulative, but since there's been very few hints here and there that he could get attached to the hotel, that means he could be sweet despite all that. The mystery and uncertainty is keeping us thinking and hoping and I LOVE that. He's such a unique and amazingly written character.
On a personal note, I think the two different directions his character could take should coexist. Yes, he's going to be a main villain in the future seasons and betray Charlie and the hotel, yes he's an evil manipulator, BUT he could also get attached to them and show redeemable qualities at the same time. For me it would make the heartbreak even greater and his character even more satisfying.

Redeemed Alastor (angelic form)
I don't believe that Alastor will redeem himself at some point in the series but that's how I believe he would look
alastor would be a virtuous soul (winner) of the archangel class
I have a theory that archangels are the celestial equivalent of overlords, since adam himself was one even though he was a human soul
🙏I hope you enjoy the art, please share 🙏

Platonic Radioapple Marriage
after Lucifer and Alastor start to get along
Lucifer: A year ago today I married my best friend
Charlie: Aww that's so sweet- wait haven't you and mom been married for centuries?
Alastor, popping up from the shadows and showing off a ring: Your mother was very cross.
Lucifer, showing his two rings: We were drunk and it was hilarious!

my ultimate fantasy for hazbin s2 is a reveal of something in alastor's past that he can't explain away or justify, something genuinely morally reprehensible, and he and the other residents of the hotel have to navigate around each other with the renewed sense of "right, he's actually a bad guy."
i feel like the show and the fandom both sometimes forget that alastor is actually legitimately morally corrupt because he's superficially nice and abides by certain rules and social mores. but he like, does murder people. that's a real thing that he does.
i feel like he can get woobified a little and portrayed as like, a byronic hero who's always actually in the right but judged and misunderstood. there's an element of truth to that, but he's mostly a selfish and cruel person who does awful things because he doesn't care.
it would be personally EXTREMELY satisfying to see him face real consequences for the way he treats people, especially from the hotel that he seems to have grown to care about. fuck that deer UP!!!
REAL AND TRUE. it's always interesting to me the way murder is evaluated in fandom next to like, sexual assault, as being the more redeemable crime somehow, which i think is quite evident in the way people talk about alastor vs valentino -- neither of these characters is remorseful or even particularly in a hurry to justify the horrendous things they do, and yet i've noticed a general tendency towards letting alastor off the hook for the serial killing but not budging on the line that val is irredeemable. and like, ofc with the caveat that this is fiction and neither of them are real, but it's interesting sometimes how people measure crimes with a value system predicated on distance, where serial killers are so removed from the average person that it's nearly outlandish, definitely a spectacle, but sexual assault is real and immediate in a way that hits people harder. there's also the matter that alastor is part of the main cast and val is a secondary antagonist -- but anyway this is getting off topic from what you were asking
i absolutely agree that i'm excited to see the show really begin to grapple with the ethics of the main cast, esp alastor, because it's like. we know he's a terrible person. the gang knows he's a terrible person. but it really comes back to the bit in episode five, when lucifer (rightly, in this case, but unhelpfully) points out that alastor represents all the worst things about sinners, that he epitomizes everything lucifer loathes about hell, and charlie's response pivots neatly away from that ethical problem: "he's defending this hotel. it might be a bit more sadistic than i'd hoped, but he's doing it for me." alastor can be as morally bankrupt as he wants so long as it's in the service of a cause that charlie perceives as good
this actually makes perfect sense for charlie's character and it's sooo fascinating. she doesn't actually seem to care about how horrific everyone in hell behaves all the time -- what she cares about is those people dying en masse without any value judgment from heaven, she's affronted that it's all numbers to them, she really seems like she's only spearheading this redemption program because she thinks it'll bring down overpopulation and stop heaven, not because she was genuinely bothered by the rampant sin before. "happy day in hell" is all about how much she loves hell and keeps putting an optimistic spin on all the property damage and cannibalism and public bdsm. she doesn't care about alastor being evil because he's not her redemption poster child, but she DOES care about angel getting into turf wars and doing drugs in the hotel because it reflects badly on her. girl i need to see your personal ethics and values get cracked the fuck open so bad

Imagine Adam going to hell in season 2 and having to go through the whole redemption thing so he has to learn to not be s misogynistic prick. Who would teach him? Of course Alastor, scaring him with Niffty.

Now that Sir Pentious has been redeemed, do you think Heaven is going to let Charlie and co. know that her hotel works and sinners can in fact find redemption?
Or do you think they're going to 'shelve that topic' until they figure out what's going on--*cough, cough* cover up that information because they fear it will cause a panic or something, upsetting the balance of their familiar order, and all that?
Because I kinda really want his arc in Season 2 to be a Prison Break style quest of him and Emily teaming up and desperately trying to find a way to contact Hell and let his friends know that he's alive and well, so to speak. Maybe secretly building a transmitter or something to communicate with Alastor's radio tower.

I wanted me a Alastor breakdown and BOY HOWDY I GOT ONE
So many ideas about what direction he can go and they're all fun to think about-- personally I wouldn't be against a longterm redemption plot. But nothing easy for him, no, I want him to try some shit, have it blow up in his face even worse than this. Have him claw his way back into trust and good graces.
I don't think he's AS ATTACHED to the crew as some seem to think, and as much as I'd like him to be, BUT I do think there's some fondness there. It's not enough yet to deter him from his true goal, but it's there, and maybe even that small part was an influence in his fight. But now gets shoved into the far reaches of his mind because holy shit I almost died and for WHAT? These weak fools? Hell with that, no more feelings!
But the thread continues to fray; his cane/mike is broken (we dunno if it can be fixed easy), he came this close to death, and he's still not much closer to getting out of contract. He can keep himself together for only so long, and now we got Lilith coming into the picture as a potential road block that can't be as easily fought off as Adam.
I'm also not entirely sure if it's her with Alastor's soul anymore? It's still highly possible but with her being in Heaven all this time and not even speaking to her family....why bother with sending Alastor? I'm not getting the impression she cares that much, yet...and what would she even gain from it? The timelines coincide, but nothing else makes much sense for it.
Whatever it is, I'm looking forward to it and the even bigger mental snap that's sure to come. Give me that madness-> main villain-> broken down man offered a hand.

ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ᴍᴇ ᴄʜᴏᴏꜱᴇ ↳ anonymous asked: HUSK and ALASTOR or angel and valentino?
#hazbin hotel#husk#hazbin husk#alastor#hazbin alastor#hazbin hotel edit#hazbin edit#radio demon#requested#make me choose#my gifs#dad beat dad#flashing gif#flickering gif#the full ask said ''in whichever way you define'' at the end so#i chose based off of which dynamic i'm more intrigued by. valentino as a villain and as a challenge to angel is REALLY interesting dont get#me wrong here. it's great. but THESE two have a lot of untapped potential for husk specifically#alastor is just there at the moment but HUSK. husk. it really is a mirror to angel's situation - everything wrong in his afterlife is#because of that gamble. but he WAS an overlord. HE was the one doing that horrible shit before. that's INTERESTING!!#he gathered and gambled away souls like money. it was all just a game to him. now HE'S getting his. a sick poetic justice in a way.#i am SO excited to see if they dive into this more!! will he ever self reflect? if he does will we SEE him doing this reflection? will it#be enough to play a part in him choosing to redeem himself? or even decide if redemption is worth the effort? i feel like there's potential#with his dynamic with alastor to influence that big time + his friendship with angel will also be a major factor#also making this set made me realize the hallway scene is like their one major interaction. jfc and it's fucking HORRIFYING lmao#look i loved their pilot interaction/dynamic as much as the next person but this is just. SO much better. more things to explore.#i'm really glad in the end that they were rewritten in this way. A+
