I really enjoyed your headcanons your headcanons are awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍 💖
Can I request a CanLiet(Hws Canada x Hws Lithuania)headcanon 🏕🎁📙
You came back for another ask 🥺 thank you so much!!
🏕: At times, Matthew will take Tolvydas on a little camping trip with him. They go stargazing, roast some sausages/fish/beetles (and try not to let Tolvydas' pet wolf steal them, because YOU KNOW he will if you give him half a chance!), make s'mores, tell scary stories around the campfire (Matthew watching Tolvydas get excited and invested in the story as he tells one of the scariest horror stories he can think up at the moment), go hiking, watch the sunset, play some games together, have picnics (once again, they gotta make sure Tolys' pet wolf DOES NOT steal any!), snuggle in a hammock, go fishing, etc.
For winter camping, they pick a nice campground with plenty of hills, good to go sledding. They also get to walk around and/or skate on a frozen lake, go hiking in the snow, have warm food/drinks next to the campfire, have hot cocoa, ice fishing, bonfires, go to a natural hotspring, and ride snowmobiles.
For spring camping, they have picnics, visit a local farmer's market, do some mini golf, bonfires, hike though the beautiful blossom-trees, fly some kites, paddleboat, etc.
For summer camping, they throw water balloons at each other (as the pet wolf barks at the water balloons flying back and forth), shoot each other with waterguns (the pet wolf keeps trying to get in the middle of it, and gets splashed with the waterguns), tye-dye some shirts together, go swimming in the lake (Tolys decides to start a splash fight with Matt in the lake), bonfires, go kayaking, try some waterskiing, etc.
And for fall camping, they go apple picking, visit local fall faires/festivals, bonfires, carve some pumpkins, go to a corn maze, a hayride, horseback riding, go on a date in a pumpkin patch, play football, go hiking through the trees with the colorful leaves, have some local apple cider, have some caramel apples, and go to drive-in horror movies together.
🎁: For Tolvydas, they often give Matthew homemade candies, cookies, chocolates, cakes, and any other homemade goodies. They also give scented candles, some trinkets, a handwritten card with some cute drawings and pressed leaves/flowers/an extra trinket or two, some knitted socks/clothes/coaster/scarf, a pretty rock they found, some of their foraged mushrooms/berries, "friend"ship bracelet, cute little clay sculpture they made, worm on a string, "friend"ship pins, magnets, etc
For Matthew, he often gives Tolys......... A book he figured they would like, something he's seen them eyeballing when walking through stores/shopping districts/malls, a soft and/or fluffy jacket (fluffy, like that hair of theirs that Matt loves!), flowers (which, they tend to eat.. But, hey, better than them just sitting on the counter and dying!), a handwritten card with some cute drawings, pressed flowers, and a few extra trinkets, a plushy, a fidget, etc.
📙: Well, Tolvydas really loves classic literature, like... Alice in Wonderland, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
For Matthew, he reads a lot of manga, such as....... Mob Psycho, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Attack on Titan, Naruto, Komi Can't Communicate, Demon Slayer, Spy x Family, Tokyo Mew Mew, Toilet-bound hanako kun, haikyu, one piece, etc.

Autumn Questionaire
Favorite thing about autumn?
"I love to watch the leaves change their colors. Autumn is such a peaceful time of year, even if it is starting to get darker och colder. I do not do well in the sun; så I look forward to the change in the weather... Plus my birthday as well as my son's birthday is in autumn!"
Spooky autumn or cozy autumn?
"Cozy. I never understood why people like spooky things."
Haunted house or Halloween party?
"Is neither an option?"
Carve pumpkins or paint pumpkins?
"I would normally say carving pumpkins; men with a toddler, I think painting pumpkins sounds better. There are no sharp objects for my son to hurt himself."
Go apple picking or go on a hay ride?
"I have never been on a hayride; så I think I have to say apple picking by default. I do love apples this time of year."
Pumpkin spice lattes or mulled apple cider?
"Mulled apple cider... Apples are delicious. Pumpkins are not."
What did you dress up for Halloween last year?
"We do not typically 'dress-up' for Halloween back in Sweden. The last time I dressed up for Halloween was during my exchange year back in high school. My costume was a poorly designed attempt at Snufkin."
Falling rain or a crackling fireplace?
"A crackling fireplace. That reminds me of sitting in the lodge after a day of skiing with a warm mug of hot chocolate in my lap... We can ski in autumn some places in Sweden."
Have you purchased any fall decor yet?
"Not yet... But I have plans to visit Maggie at the Apothecary och get some decorations."
Favorite photo that you took last autumn?
Favorite autumn-themed movie?
"Does 'Höstsonaten' count?"
Favorite color to wear in autumn?
"I always thought that mustard yellow color was nice. I have several sweaters with that color; och they look very nice in the autumn with the background of the changing leaves."
Favorite autumn-themed book?
"Because of the title, can we count 'Autumn' by Karl Ove Knausgaard?"
Best way to spend a rainy day?
"This will make me sound like such a mamma: rainy days are great days to build a giant world with train tracks och watch my son play with his trains for hours... Also, rainy days are great days for baking."
Favorite autumn food?
"This may be strange; but my favorite autumn food is falu sausages. There was a local farm near where I grew up that had the best smoked sausages every autumn."
Favorite autumn quote?
"'Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder'... Good for any season."
Favorite autumn activity?
"This will make me sound like such a mamma again: I honestly love planning for my son's birthday at the beginning of November. That has quickly become my favorite autumn activity."
Favorite autumn scent?
"A freshly baked cinnamon apple crisp."
Is your birthday in autumn?
"Japp! My birthday is the 7th of November."

I don't know if this is real or fake...but you know what I know for a fact is real?
In case you can't read what this Hayride Premium Pork Sausage is...the bottom says "Seasoned with Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, and Pumpkin for a Touch of Sweetness".
Yes. There is goddamn Pumpkin Spice Breakfast Sausage in my fucking fridge right now.
Now in case you're unaware of what breakfast sausage is in America, it's an uncased uncured unsmoked sausage made of ground pork and seasonings that typically include sage, thyme, rosemary, black pepper, and red pepper. It's the kind of sausage that McDonald's serves on their breakfast sandwiches.
It should not be Pumpkin fucking Spice.
I was not informed I was eating Pumpkin Spice Breakfast Sausage when I made a breakfast burrito. I thought I had normal regular breakfast sausage. I was not expecting to be punched in the face by cinnamon and nutmeg when I was eating sausage with scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla.
WUT.
...Please somebody tell me this is faked.
(ETA: These, though, are all too believable.)
(via Ian Lemming at Bluesky)
#pumpkin spice#I don't have any problems with pumpkin spice#But not in savory foods#And I know a lot of pork dishes include sweet-and-savory mix#And if this were braised pork shoulder with apples I'd be okay#But not goddamn BREAKFAST SAUSAGE

A/N: Make sure you read Chapter Twenty One first, otherwise this probably won’t make sense. Let me know what you think so far!!!! :)

---------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER TWENTY TWO:
Harry and Elizabeth managed to wake themselves up earlier than they would have on a normal day, still on a high from their conversation last night. Elizabeth did her best to keep her mind off of the LA Fashion Show next weekend, focusing on the ‘here and now’. She was excited to see her niece today and take her to her first pumpkin patch.
She double and triple checked that Harry was sure he wanted to come along, in case he was recognized, urging him to let his manager and Lisa know, just in case. After the fifth time of her asking, Harry practically shoved her into the bathroom to get ready and stop pestering him. Even though her period was practically at an end, she still felt a lingering bloatedness, so she decided to dress in black jeans and tons of baggy layers including an oversized knit sweater with a jean jacket with the sleeves cut off on top. Comfort was key. She put on minimal makeup and threw her hair in a messy ponytail.
It felt odd adjusting to the chilly UK weather after having been in LA for a week. She was beginning to miss it. When she stepped downstairs, Harry was plating some breakfast for the two of them; some pancakes and sausages.
“He sings, he cooks, he’s sweet, what a perfect man,” Elizabeth smiled, kissing Harry’s cheek, grabbing her plate and a glass of orange juice.
Harry chuckled, taking a seat next to her on the kitchen island, “Just making sure I don’t give you a reason to change your mind about dating me.”
Elizabeth shook her head, taking a sip of her drink, “I waited too long for this to back out now.”
“Does your sister know I’m coming with you?”
“Yes, I told her.”
“And does she know we’re-”
“Yes, I told her we’re dating,” she cut him off, smiling. “But she knows not to say anything.”
“I can’t believe she has a baby,” Harry remarked, swallowing a mouth full of food, “I remember when she used to have to watch us when your parents were out of town. She’s just tell us not to do anything stupid and sneak out of the house with her boyfriend.”
Elizabeth laughed, “At least we never did anything stupid.”
The hour drive to Jenny’s house went by fast. Elizabeth drove to avoid the attention on Harry’s car, and they blasted music, screaming and dancing along. Harry made fun of her forgetting the lyrics and Elizabeth made fun of his dancing. When they finally reached the driveway, Harry followed Elizabeth up the front steps as she knocked and stuck her head inside.
“Jenny?” She called out, stepping inside and tossing her bag by the door.
“In the kitchen!” she called out.
They went further into the house to see Jenny, putting dishes away while simultaneously trying to burp her daughter. She turned to watch them both come in and Jenny let out a muffled screech, quickly walking over to her younger sister to give her a hug.
“Oh my goodness, Harry!” she exclaimed, pulling away from Elizabeth and going in for a hug, “I haven’t seen you in ages, how are you?”
“Hi!” He laughed, hugging her back, “I’m great, thank you. How are you doing? Do you need help with the dishes?”
“Oh no, that’s alright, thanks. My husband will do it when he gets home.”
“How is Tom?” Elizabeth asked while smiling at the baby in her sister's arms.
“He’s just a lump on a log at night, isn’t he? Absolutely no help with Mia. Suppose he can’t do much, anyway. I’m the one that can feed her,” Jenny shrugged.
“Right, I’ve waited long enough. Give her here,” Elizabeth declared, holding her hands out for her niece.
Harry smiled, watching Elizabeth rocking Mia in her arms and let out a little laugh when Mia cooed, reaching her chubby hand up towards her Aunt’s dangling ponytail, spitting a little. “She’s beautiful,” Harry said to Jenny.
“Thank you. We’re really lucky.”
Mia kept looking in Harry’s direction. Even when Elizabeth tried to get her attention, she wouldn’t look away from him. “I think she likes you,” Elizabeth giggled, “Do you want to hold her?”
“Sure,” he nodded, reaching over to grab her. He propped her head in his elbow and swayed her as she stared up into his eyes. Harry ooed and aahhed at her, making faces and random popping noises, which made Mia’s eyes light up, kicking her feet wildly until a loud guttural giggle forced itself out.
Jenny gasped, “Are you kidding me? That was her first laugh! Hold on let me get my phone!”
She frantically looked around the kitchen for her mobile device as Harry and Elizabeth shared a quick glance of shock and awe at each other, before he turned his attention back to the infant, making more noises in an attempt to make her laugh. Sure enough, as soon as Jenny started to record on her phone, more belly laughs erupted from Mia causing the three adults to cheer, excitedly.
After a while, they decided they were ready to head over to the pumpkin patch. Elizabeth sat up front in Jenny’s car while Harry climbed in the back with the baby, entertaining her with a few toys while joining in on the conversation with the two sisters who had been catching up. The journey to the farm was only about fifteen minutes, and even though it was a Wednesday afternoon, it still had a good amount of people walking around.
Jenny unfolded the stroller and slipped her daughter inside while they made their way out of the car lot and towards the farm. Harry took Elizabeth’s hand in his, ignoring her concerned looks, and followed, heading towards the line to get on the hayride that would take them to the pumpkin field. She noticed his facial expression shift and gave him a questioning look, trying to see his eyes through his sunglasses.
“You okay?” she whispered to him.
“I think someone might have recognized me,” he hushed back, head tilting towards the back of the line.
Elizabeth discreetly looked towards the back to see a woman, a little older than them, occasionally glancing over at them with a look of nervousness while two boys around the ages of 8 and 10 ran around her. Elizabeth nodded at Harry, understandingly, and turned her attention back to her niece who played in her stroller. When it was their turn to get on the hayride, Elizabeth took Mia out of the stroller and held her while Harry carried the stroller up to the large wagon that was being pulled by the tractor. Elizabeth, Jenny, and Harry found their seats on the wagon while the rest of the guests climbed on and the tractor loudly started up, pulling them off.
The smell of the tractor engine and the crisp autumn air gave Elizabeth a sense of nostalgia as they neared the pumpkin patch, and she smiled widely, forgetting about the people that might have been watching them, thoroughly enjoying her time.
Once the tractor stopped in the middle of the pumpkin patch, everyone climbed off and Elizabeth bounced Mia in her arms through the rows of pumpkins, helping Jenny search. She wanted one big pumpkin and one tiny one.
“Baby, do you want to get a pumpkin, too?” Harry called out to her, making butterflies go crazy in her stomach. She wasn’t used to him calling her ‘baby’ yet. “We could carve them tonight.”
Elizabeth smiled, “Sure!”
He went off in search of the perfect pumpkins while Elizabeth walked with her sister.
“I always thought you two would end up together,” Jenny whispered, turning a pumpkin over to inspect.
Elizabeth grinned to herself, blushing lightly and looking over at him, going through a bunch of pumpkins. His hair flopped down in front of his face and his sunglasses slid down the bridge of his nose when he bent down. He was chewing on a piece of gum that made his jaw flex whenever he bit down.
Jenny continued, “I’m happy for you. You deserve it after that douchebag of an ex.”
“I seem to remember you liking him…” Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at her sister with a telling grin.
“That was before he cheated on you,” Jenny scoffed, rolling her eyes before picking up a small pumpkin, deciding she liked it. “Besides, Harry’s much hotter.”
Elizabeth laughed, looking down at Mia who’s eyes darted all around. In a baby voice Elizabeth whispered, “He is hot, isn’t he?” shaking her little fingers.
Harry came running up with a pumpkin in each arm and a proud smile on his face, “What do you think of these bad boys, huh?” he shook them in his arms.
“They’re perfect! Thank you!” She laughed, amusing him.
Harry put the pumpkins back on the wagon and ran back to join his girlfriend, smiling at Mia. It was obvious he wanted to hold her, so Elizabeth passed the baby over to him and he happily tucked her in his arms, adjusting the blanket around her methodically so she wouldn’t get cold. Mia wrapped her chubby hand around his finger as he smiled down at her, humming a song Elizabeth couldn’t quite make out. Her heart soared seeing him interact with her niece and how great he was with children; a natural.
“I can’t wait to have one of my own,” Harry muttered, smiling down at the baby who was so enthralled with Harry that it was almost as if he was the only one there.
Elizabeth’s heart rate increased, but she quickly pushed the thoughts aside and said, “You’ll be a great dad one day.”
He smiled up at her sweetly as Jenny traipsed up with two pumpkins in hand. The three of them went back onto the hayride where a few people had returned to, and waited for the rest of the group to finish up. Jenny took a few pictures of them all on the hayride and a ton of baby Mia on the way back to the main section of the farm.
They grabbed some lunch at a food truck that was on the property and ate while Mia fell back asleep in the stroller.
“When was the last time you talked to mom and dad?” Jenny asked, taking a bite of her hotdog.
“Two days ago,” Elizabeth said, “told them I was going to stop by saturday night after dinner at Anne’s.”
“I’m sure they’re excited for it. Dad’s probably shitting himself. You were always the favorite,” Jenny declared. Before Elizabeth could retort, she continued, “Are you bringing Harry with you?”
Harry and Elizabeth looked at each other. She hadn’t asked him to come, she didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable. Obviously they’ve met before, but now that they were officially dating, it’s different. That suddenly got her thinking about her dinner with Anne on saturday. Did she know about them? Would that change how she felt about her? Did that make this dinner more official? She could feel herself starting to overthink again.
“You don’t have to,” Elizabeth said to him, doing her best to sound nonchalant.
He shook his head, “But I’d like to, if that’s okay.”
Elizabeth nodded, smiling at him and they finished eating lunch. They wandered around the farm for a while, looking at all the baby goats and cows before Harry pushed the stroller back to the car and put the carrier in the back seat with him while her and Jenny jumped in the front again. By the time they got back to Jenny’s house it was nearly 4 PM. They decided that it was time to head back home, so they each gave Jenny and Mia a kiss on the cheek and little hugs before heading back to Elizabeth’s house, talking about what they were going to carve in the pumpkin when they got back.
They made a quick pasta for dinner before diving into their pumpkins, covering the table with magazines and newspapers and grabbing all of the sharp utensils Elizabeth owned as well as some markers for tracing.
Music played in the background as they began mapping out their design. Elizabeth was going for a standard jack-o-lantern look while Harry traced a cute upside down bat, carving out the top and scooping out the guts. Harry was faster than her, washing his hands to prepare for the sculpting of the bat.
“How’d you do that so fast?” Elizabeth huffed, scraping the inside of her pumpkin, “Mine’s so stringy!”
Harry laughed, walking back over to her, “Baby, you’ve got pumpkin guts in your hair” he pulled them off in long strands.
Elizabeth wiped her forehead with her wrist, “I totally did that on purpose.”
Harry laughed harder as she’s now smeared pumpkin juice all across her forehead. The crinkles by his eyes deepened and his teeth shone brightly while he took a paper towel and wiped her forehead clean. He sweetly bent down and kissed her lightly on the lips.
Right as he was about to say something, Elizabeth’s phone dinged to signal she had gotten a text message. Instinctively, Harry looked over on the table where it lay and noticed that it was from Kyle. The text message displayed on the home screen ‘Please call me. I miss you. Are you still with him?’
Elizabeth looked up at Harry to see his expression change to concern. Suddenly she felt the need to explain herself. “I haven’t spoken to him since the club, I promise.”
“Why is he texting you?” Harry asked. His tone was calm, but you could see the conflict in his eyes.
“Harry, he’s been texting me at least once a week since we broke up. He’ll get over it. I promise, I’m all yours. Please, babe, don’t let him ruin tonight.”
Harry’s expression softened, a flicker of light shining through before he nodded, accepting what she said and giving her another kiss, more yearning than the one before.
By the time they had finished their pumpkins, Elizabeth’s looked like a twelve year old carved it, and Harry’s bat looked more like a butterfly, but they were done and that’s all that mattered. They were exhausted from the day’s activities and since it was nearly 1 AM, they decided to go to bed. Harry had to be up early to head back to the studio as they were working on the album some more, and Elizabeth had to get back to work.
She found herself dreaming about Harry with a baby, and wondering what it would be like if their relationship actually lasted. Then she suddenly started having nightmares about seeing Anne again. She was always the sweetest woman Elizabeth had ever known, but how would she feel about her and Harry dating? Would she be as accepting?

How to Host the Perfect Backyard Bonfire Party This Summer
A snapping fire. Great organization. Who doesn't cherish a bonfire? Alright, so this mid year probably won't be the best an ideal opportunity to expound on arranging a bonfire party, yet I can dream, isn't that so?
Regardless of whether you're actually rehearsing social removing this mid year, you can even now praise exceptional events around the bonfire with your close family.
Also, there's consistently one year from now… .
Anyway, you're here for the bonfire party thoughts. I've assembled a rundown of seven fundamental things you will require, in addition to some yummy food and fun game thoughts too.
Here's the manner by which to design the ideal bonfire party in your own terrace.
A snapping fire. Great organization. Who doesn't cherish a bonfire? Here's to facilitating the ideal patio bonfire gathering this late spring.
Above all, what's a bonfire party?
Not 100% sure what this sort of gathering is? Try not to stress, it's not all that much. You've presumably even been to a couple… or several dozen.
A bonfire party is perhaps the least demanding approaches to have a marvelous social affair, yet with less work.
There's nothing similar to the glow of a bonfire and some great organization to turn a festival — or an exhausting old summer evening — into a critical night with loved ones.
You can design a bonfire party for:
birthday celebration for grown-ups
your kid's Sweet 16
a graduation bonfire party
bonfire block party
commitment party
A bonfire party is perhaps the most effortless approaches to have a magnificent social affair, yet with less work.
Bonfire party basics
Considering what sort of provisions you need to have a patio bonfire soiree this mid year? Here's top notch of the main seven bonfire party fundamentals.
1. A fire pit. (Clearly.)
You'll require some sort of fire pit, regardless of whether it's an opening in the ground, a convenient bonfire, a fire table, or something different.
We love our Solo Stove bonfire, which is a versatile fire pit intended to be totally smokeless (so no waiting campfire smell!).
2. Firewood.
On the off chance that it's a wood consuming fire pit (like the Solo Stove I referenced above), you'll need a lot of logs to keep the fire consuming, just as a lighter to kick it off.
On the off chance that it's not log agreeable, you'll need whatever kind of fuel your fire pit requires.
3. Something for visitors to sit on.
In the event that you don't as of now have bonfire seating, you'll need to concoct something for visitors to sit. Comfortable porch seats are consistently decent, yet on the off chance that that is not in the financial plan, at that point you'll need to utilize whatever is accessible.
Overlay up outdoors seats work incredible, as do decent, large logs (for brief timeframes!).
4. Food and beverages.
It is anything but a bonfire without s'mores! Look down for some extra menu thoughts for your bonfire party.
5. Tunes.
Obviously, music is a bonfire party fundamental, too. Set up a playlist of your number one bonfire tunes early so you can keep the gathering going throughout the evening.
6. Open air lighting.
This is quite possibly the most ignored parts of a terrace bonfire territory.
You can make the ideal mood with the correct lighting. String lights are perhaps the most mainstream approaches to illuminate the lawn during an open air party.
7. Fun bonfire exercises.
Last, however not least, it is anything but a gathering without arranging some great exercises to keep everybody locked in. Keep perusing for some pleasant bonfire party game thoughts.
Food thoughts for your bonfire party
We should discuss the menu for your bonfire party. Obviously, you could adhere to the rudiments — sausages and s'mores. In any case, in case you're searching for some extra food thoughts, here they are:
Fondue. Additionally, food to plunge in the fondue: bread, organic product, vegetables, meat, and so on
Burgers and sausages. Try to give the buns, in addition to all the garnishes: ketchup and mustard, relish, cheddar, and pickles…
Plates of mixed greens. Potato plate of mixed greens and pasta serving of mixed greens are mainstream decisions.
Chips and plunge. Plain potato chips are in every case great, and they pair well with a wide range of plunge.
S'mores. Chocolate, marshmallows, and graham wafers are the norm — yet you can blend it up with an assortment of chocolates (Reese's peanut spread cups, for instance) and distinctive marshmallow flavors.
Organic product. Watermelon is a tasty summery treat, and a natural product plate of mixed greens can't be beat. (Did you get the rhyme? It was totally accidental, yet now I would prefer not to transform it… )
Food to cook over the fire:
Marshmallows
Bread
Crumpets
Organic product kebabs
Smooth Way bars
Bananas overflowed with sugar
Pineapples
Strawberries
Pizza pops
Wieners
String cheddar
Summer wiener
(What are your number one food sources to broil over the fire? Is there something that I'm absent from the rundown? Offer your thoughts in the remarks box!)
Bonfire party games and exercises
At long last, we need to design a couple of gathering games to ensure everybody doesn't get exhausted and leave too early. Here are some pleasant game and movement thoughts for your patio bonfire party.
Yard games (before it gets dull)
stepping stool throw
badminton
volleyball
cornhole
Shine stick games (after dull)
shine stick tag
shine stick forager chase
ring throw
shine in obscurity bowling
Karaoke as well as moving
Twenty inquiries, truth or dare, and so on
There are such countless approaches to have a life-changing bonfire get-together!
On the off chance that you have ponies and a trailer, consider taking everybody on a hayride. Host a progression of rivalries and have everybody group up, at that point grant a prize to the group with the most successes. Have a chime in or tell campfire stories.
The alternatives are boundless.

Part 1
"I already hate this place" I said more to myself than anyone. We were in the car on the freeway going up into Rhinebeck, New York. The part of New York nobody cares about. Cows, corn, apples, goats and strip malls full of nosey grandparents and an abysmally small number of pre-college age kids desperate to leave town for the city.
Worst of all, my cousin Jezzy had lived there with my mom and her immediate family. This was going to be a horrible weekend.
I scraped at the remainders of my chipped black nail polish while my dad whistled along to Nickleback on the radio. I couldn't tell if it was the song making me want to puke or the egregiously long drive.
"Come on Kaylie. What happened to enjoying your favorite season? Hayrides, pumpkins, and your favorite? Hot cider, but fresh, locally made" said dad, trying to cheer me up.
Maybe it worked. I couldn't stop the slight smile he inspired, but I could hide my face by turning it towards the window and watching the swaths of green land and prairie houses pass by. That's when he figured me out and I could see him smile from the corner of my eye.
"And don't worry. You can text me anytime. If you're bored, if you're upset. You know you can reach out" he continued on, as Nickleback faded to Daughtry.
"Ugh" was all I said. "Can we listen to something else? No offense"
"Here" dad replied, unhooking his phone from the mount on the AC vent. The phone was connected to the car speakers by bluetooth, but I did miss the days when we'd flip through a case full of CDs. I scrolled through his playlists with my band-aid wrapped right thumb until I settled on a stray AFI song, "girls not grey".
"Okay. We are almost there. I'm gonna pull into a drive through and order some coffee. Want anything?"
I knew he was talking about Dunkin Donuts. Dad was a police officer but he was on vacation. That didn't stop him from going to his favorite feed station.
"Oatmeal?" was all I said with a shrug. I was barely hungry, but if I wanted to survive entering Rhinebeck without a mental crash, I needed the sustenance.
"Of course honey" says dad as he pulls the car neatly into the drive thru. There were no other customers there. Upstate New York was so different from Queens. The pace was slower. Everything was monumentally more boring.
I picked at a loose thread hanging from the collar of my Tripp moto jacket, a hand-me-down from Jezzy of course. Remembering that fact made me want to hide it in my sleepaway bag. Did she even remember it anyway? She had a million jackets just like it. I placed my bets on her forgetting and sighed.
Dad and I ate quietly and sipped coffee and hot white chocolate respectively as we closed the distance between civilization and the family house. Well, mom's side of the family.
Pulling up onto the spacey car-addled drive-way lawn hybrid felt both familiar and strange. I finished my tasteless oatmeal and warm drink just as dad finished his doughnut and started on his breakfast sandwich. The smell of the maple sausage filled the car.
Immediately I saw my baby cousin Abby outside on the front steps of the big family house holding her American Girl doll and twirling one of her blond pigtails. My youngest aunt, Tabitha came out of the house and scooped Abby up into her arms and approached the car just as dad put it in park. Tabitha called back and soon Mom and my other aunt Jennifer and uncle Joe came outside. Uncle Joe was wearing oven mitts and had on his "Grill Sergeant" apron. He must have been flipping burgers in the backyard. I wondered if grandma was up too? She had dementia and needed constant care. But I found that I missed her anyway.
Dad opened my door after he got out of the car and I stepped out, unprepared for the borage of hugs and shoulder pats that soon followed.
"Hi" was all I said after the first hugs. When mom hugged me, I said "hey mom I missed you"
"I missed you too honey" she said and kissed my forehead. Abby squealed when she hugged me and hit me with her doll.
"Ow" I said.
"Come on inside Abby. Let's eat some cookies. Your aunt Madeline worked on them all day" said aunt Tabitha towing Abby inside. As I lugged my sleepaway bag over the few steps that led into the house, I watched in the corner of my eye as mom and dad talked quietly outside by the car. A part of me hoped dad would suggest they go get something to eat. In this fantasy, mom agreed and the two of them would go out and eat all day, and maybe dad would stay over too. But a girl can only dream.
The house smelled like pine scented Cheseapeake Bay candles and grilled beef.
"Hey there scout" said uncle Joe. "I'm making burgers. Feel free to have one if you're hungry from that long journey out of the city"
"Thanks uncle Joe" I mumble, heading straight upstairs for the guest room, hoping and hoping with all my heart that Jezzy wasn't in there. It was her room before she ran off and started living with some creep. It was around then that the family's wariness turned to me instead of her. She got off their plate. Me? I was the appetizer about to be upgraded to a dreaded entree.
I didn't even look up when I dropped my Nightmare Before Christmas sleepway bag on the floor by the door, but as soon as I did, my stomach dropped.
There was Jezzy sitting on what was to be my bed. She had the same long vibrant purple hair--- reminding me of all the times I enviously eyed the dye bottles she'd leave littering the bathtub and dining room table. She wore the same signature shade of autumn brown lipstick, one of her trademark moto jackets, ripped black jeans and shiny black chunky heel boots. I was taken aback by how amazing she looked, how it made me idolize and dislike her all at once. Nobody prepared me for this.
"Hey there cuz" she said, her voice raspy yet upbeat. "I'm so happy you like that jacket. I wore that to a few concerts when I used to go. Wow! you cut a bang? It looks so good, that layered teased look. Just a wait a few years and maybe Madeline will let you get highlights" she says crossing her legs.
"Do they know you're here?" I ask. No greetings. No manners. I was slightly ashamed.
"Of course not" she said. "Oh and by the way. Don't let anybody bully you here okay? You're not like some kind of spawn I spit out before running away. You're Madeline's kid. You're a good kid. My mom, as much as she likes to pretend she was, wasn't exactly a stellar child. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree I guess" she finishes it off by biting into a McIntosh apple I didn't even realize she had, if she had it at all before biting it. Her lipstick stayed perfectly intact afterwards.
"Okay" was all I could muster. "Well, I'll be fine"
"I know you will. Just stay safe. Stay away from bridges and all that. You know" she says with a smile. "Grandma would appreciate it. A little milk in a bowl. Don't step over the mushroom rings and such"
I clenched my jaw. Here we go again. I needed her to disappear. I needed her to leave. Even though I thought she was gorgeous, and wanted with every fiber of my being to be just like her. Run off with my own dark prince, go to any shows I wanted, get into clubs with a fake ID, meet bands and artists and directors, model for underground magazines and kiss boys behind the bleachers. Most of all get to know her. The real Jezzy. The brave, wayward girl. The only one in the family privy to grandma's whimsical insanity. The only one who could get her to speak a coherent sentence. It sat heavy on my bones, that desired that wish to know the world they shared, and the world Jezzy ran away for.
But I was just Kaylie. The ticking time bomb. The one that reminded everybody of Jezzy. And grandma's dementia. And everything that ever went wrong in the family.
"Don't you have somewhere to go?" I nearly spit.
"I'll see you around. Bye Kaylie" she says with a warm smile, standing up, long, reed thin, perfect. She looked like she could drift on the autumn air like a fallen leaf. Like her laughter brings the wolves to howl at the moon. Like her hands can tame the night. Like she dances with elves in the forests. And part of me ached for it. Ached for the life she chose. It was so physical I almost rushed to her. In my mind I fell at her feet and begged her to tell me how she did it.
But I'm Kaylie Scheifflin. I'm not Jesslyn Rivers.
When I turned to glance at the doorway to see if anyone was eavesdropping, I felt a slight draft of cool air and when I turned to look back at Jezzy, she was gone.

5 Cities That Are Most Beautiful To Visit In The Fall
Summer has ended and your tan has surely faded, but some may say that the best season of the year is now upon us.
Its the season of boots, scarves and sweatshirts. The season of colorful and crunchy leaves, and the season of pumpkin and apple flavored well everything. Its the season of mulled wine, hayrides and Halloween. Even your favorite TV series have started up again.
Fall is here, and its a season that must be embraced to the fullest before those pretty trees are nothing but bare branches and youve lost feeling in each and every appendage while shoveling your car out of 3 feet of snow.
Here are five of the best places to travel in the fall (warning: passportmay be required):
1. White Mountains, New Hampshire
If you havent seen the White Mountains in the fall, you havent experienced this beautiful season at its prime. While this region is great for outdoor activities year-round, it is inarguably the most stunningin the fall.
To experience the areas famous foliage, take a hike through the mountains, sign up for a canopy walk and zip-lining adventure tour or take in the views on a scenic helicopter ride. After such strenuous activities, a brewery tour or evening of warm drinks in one of the many cozy mountain restaurants is a good idea.
Lastly, if you didnt already know, New Hampshire isatax-free state. Might as well buy all of the cute fall boots you want, and maybe even get a jump on that Christmas shopping while youre at it.
2. Boston, Massachusetts
Theres nothing better than fall in Boston. The seasons colorful leaves put on quite the display next to the citys historical architecture and iconicbrownstone buildings.
Boston Common and the Public Gardens are looking their annual best, anda stroll along the Charles River Esplanade is as perfect as a picture.
Hop over to Harvard University and enjoy some leaf-peeping on their popular walking tour, or climb aboard a duck boat. Duck boatsare famous in Boston andanother great way to take in the city sights, from the main streets of Boston right into the Charles River.
Stop into one of the citys many pubs or bars for a fall cocktail and a football game, and youll feel right at home.
3. London, England
While London has a reputation centered around less than desirable weather, dont underestimate the beauty that can be found on the other side of the pond.
London is amazing in the fall, and a stroll through one of the citys world-class parks, like Hyde or Regents, will quickly provide evidence of this. In addition to the leaves and their changing colors, England is still impeccably lush this time of year, adding a bright touch of green to the burnt oranges, yellows and reds that youll find.
Big Ben never looked better than when framed by fall foliage along the Thames.
As if the scenery isnt enough, the countrys pub culture is a reason in itself to visit. Whether youre after an afternoon tea, beer, cider, whiskey or a hearty roast dinner, London has plenty to offer in the confines of a cozy pub to take the edge off the chilly weather.
4. Rome, Italy
Ciao, Roma! The summer season is gone, the tourists have passed and there is no better time to visit romantic Rome than at the peak of fall.
Imagine slow afternoons filled with delicious wine, the best pizza in the world and savory gelato, all against the breathtaking backdrop of Roman architecture highlighted by autumnal colors.
The weather is warm enough to explore the city by foot (or bike), so take in the changing of the leaves with a stroll through Villa Borghese or a ride along the Appian Way.
Romans love to dine late into the night, so be sure to indulge in an evening where youll take your pick of a cobblestoned street-sidetable, comfortably setbeneath a heat lamp and eat and drink to your hearts content.
5. Prague, Czech Republic
Youve seen Disney movies, complete with their castles and charming villages, right? (Im looking at you, Beauty and the Beast.) Well, Prague is exactly that.
Addnumerous public parks and fall foliage to this fairytale setting, and youll be hard-pressed to find a reason not to go.Did I mention the pop-up hot wine and sausage stands? Yeah, there are those, too. Theres also weekend markets where people drink cider and beer, and eat delicious food all day.
Its not too cold, not too hot, not too busy, everything is cheap and you basically feel like a princess (or prince) every day. Even more so when youre surrounded by beautiful leaves and youre frolicking around castles.
Winters coming, my friends, so you best book those plane tickets soon.
