HOW THE HUNGER GAMES CAST WOULD REACT TO….
being asked out by their friend
includes: katniss, peeta, gale, haymitch, effie, cato, clove, glimmer, marvel, thresh, annie, finnick, johanna, coriolanus, lucy gray, sejanus, festus, coral, reaper
Katniss would think it’s a joke. Definitely think it’s a joke. Once you reassure her it’s very serious, she’d be confused on why her. Eventually, you’d have to bribe her with something to give you a try, and later she’d call it the best choice she made unironically.
Peeta would be very happy, and accept immediately. Later, at your house, you’d be interrupted by Peeta with some muffins made just for you by him.
Gale would at first be upset, that you were able to ask before him. He’d definitely be getting teased by Rory. He’d tell you that he was gonna ask you as well, but of course that’s a lie.
Haymitch would be too drunk to understand what you’re asking him, and say no. However, once he’s sobered up and realized what you’ve done, he’d call you and ask you to come to his place so he could explain- and accept immediately. He’d be sober during this, a rare sight of Haymitch.
Effie would pretend to be shocked, but really, she knew you’d ask her out. She’d accept, and give you some flowers to seal the deal. She’d listened to you talking about your favourite flowers earlier, and bought them ahead of time.
Cato would think it’s silly you’d ask him out, as he thought he’d ask you out. He’d still accept, of course, but make sure that you knew that he was the ‘boss’ in the relationship by doing everything for you that day. Was it from jealousy? Embarrassment? Possessiveness? We’ll never know.
Clove would definitely have an ego boost. Like, you asked her out first? That’s both sexy and sweet, and she would never shut up about it.
Glimmer would definitely accept immediately with no thought, she’s the type to go all in with romance. You can expect some cuddles that night from her, along with some teasing.
Marvel would be confused. Aren’t the guys supposed to ask first? As soon as you told him that that’s a stereotype, he’d accept, but still be VERY protective. He’d be very disappointed that you beat him to it, but also a bit proud.
Thresh would NOT trust you. He’d think of it as a joke, more or less like Katniss would. However, once he realizes it’s not, he’d say ‘yes’ and walk away, mainly cause he has no idea what else to do.
Annie would make it her mission to shower you with love and affection the second you asked her out. She’d accept, then come to your house with flowers and little pearls by the sea as a thank you gift.
Finnick would definitely feel a bit embarrassed, but also attracted to the fact that you asked him first. He’d be a bit scared if anyone heard, because he’s supposed to be, like, single and ready to mingle- but as soon as he realizes no one’s watching, he’d say yes.
Johanna would be the type to say ‘no’ jokingly, and then tell you it’s a yes later on. She’d be a bit nervous on if she’s coming off as too harsh, but then decide on not giving a fuck.
Coriolanus would feel like the luckiest guy in the world at that moment. However, he’d definitely make sure to dictate your dates to his pleasure, so he can spend time with you and have what he wants as well.
Lucy Gray would accept, but run away right after with a smile on her face. You might think that she accepted as a joke, but in fact, she ran to go write a song about you, which you fully embraced as soon as you heard it.
Sejanus would definitely be confused, and ask if it was a bet due to his unpopularity in both the districts and the Capitol. Once you reminded him that you actually cared, he’d be very happy, now that he had someone to love and cherish as he does with Coriolanus and his Ma.
Festus would agree, but probably say some cocky shit like ‘I knew you’d ask me, I’m that hot’ but in a funny way. He wouldn’t stop until you laughed just a little bit, and make sure that plans are set in stone for a date.
Coral wouldn’t be the easiest to coax into saying yes. Sure, she’d been crushing on you, but on the inside, she really doesn’t think she’d be a good girlfriend. She’d say no, but regret it later and say yes.
Reaper would say yes, although he’d seem slightly intimidating. Seeing you be a bit scared, he’d immediately feel bad and give you something out of his pocket as a gift. Whether it’s a single nickel, or a piece of rust, it’s a gift alright.

I hate how the movies took out the full blown tantrum katniss throws after the demonstration for the game makers
like yes, her feelings and fear is 100% valid but her slamming doors and sobbing facedown on her bed is so teenager

yes i am the biggest advocate of surrogate father haymitch & adopted daughter katniss but like. they're so Awful. they've not got a mother/daughter relationship, they've got that father/daughter relationship where the dad is both reaching for a connection and rejecting the thing that he made because she's too much like him, too close to what he is and far away from it because of her potential and the daughter rejects because she doesn't understand him. understanding him is understanding herself. caring for him is caring for herself. and then she's awful to him because she doesn't understand and doesn't want to understand. and he's rejectful of her because she's got so many traits that are for the worse and not for the better. their similarities don't hurt nearly as much as what their differencee impale them with. it will always be what katniss could be (haymitch), and what haymitch prevented/could've been (katniss.)

no change in the movies pisses me off more than them having peeta just scream "ur all gonna die!!!1!1" at the camera with the hard cut to haymitch going "that was a warning (empath)" when in the book it was peeta struggling to even get the warning out and literally everyone in 13 expect haymitch and katniss going "wtf did he mean by that he can't be trusted" to which haymitch had to desperately plead with coin to listen to the warning, because that's obviously what is was, and none of them know peeta except for him and katniss
Like as unintentionally funny as the scene in the movie is it wasn't even a moment in the books that makes haymitch seem all that clever, like they try to spin in it the movie, it was just him knowing and trusting peeta. It was a testiment to his love for the kid, not anything else ughhfhfjkdkdkf

Cinna comes in with what appears to be an unassuming yellow dress across his arms.
“Have you given up the whole ‘girl on fire’ thing?” I ask.
“You tell me,” he says, and slips it over my head. I immediately notice the padding over my breasts, adding curves that hunger has stolen from my body. My hands go to my chest and I frown.
“I know,” says Cinna before I can object. “But the Game-makers wanted to alter you surgically. Haymitch had a huge fight with them over it. This was the compromise.”
an underrated Haymitch moment if I ever seen one 🙃

Thinking of Haymitch hugging Effie after embarrassing himself in book one.
I know that Katniss says that Effie must hate it because she’s probably tired of Haymitch groping her all the time, but that’s not how I interpret this scene. At least, not this specific touch. The hug, the clinging. He was drunk and embarrassed after the fall in front of the cameras. He didn’t know where he was. When he looked around, the only thing he recognized was Effie. He clung to her.
Effie seemed like she hated it. And perhaps she did. She hated the cameras and how it wasn’t supposed to be. Somebody who cares (or cared) so much about order and her status in the capitol would hate that. In front of the capitol? Really Haymitch, even drunk you shouldn’t make that mistake.
I think they have hugged before, probably after a set of slightly promising tributes died. Not the first tributes Effie had. Haymitch would hate her after her first tributes. Seeing how she was simply disappointed that she wouldn’t get promoted anytime soon. And she wouldn’t have been sad for the promising tributes deaths either. At least, not exactly. Maybe a little sad. A little more hopeless, but still with the everlasting smile on her face. She would probably say something that shows her ignorance with a sense of bare human understanding behind it. The why is always rebellious, even if the speaker doesn’t see that spark. Why did this have to happen, Haymitch? We were so close.
Sensing even a sliver of questioning the capital is a sign you could have a future ally. Haymitch must know that. Even drunk he should still be at least that smart. From then on they probably comfort each other after each loss. Each failing. Only briefly though, as if just because it’s routine at some point. Try. Fail. Hug. Fall in to old habits and immediately try to forget. Repeat. It’s only because they understand each other in a way. A very small, otherwise infinitesimal way outside of the games.

okay not to hunger games post on main AGAIN but. i just know snow was shitting his pants every single day of the 74th hunger games and that’s what makes the theories that prim was preselected or the capitol was watching katniss so dumb because snow spent 60 years literally gaslighting himself into believing that he killed lucy gray and no one remembered her. and in those 60 years only one (1) tribute from district 12 won the hunger games. so of course he’d gotten comfortable and really believed that even though he still didn’t know what happened to lucy gray, even in district 12 they don’t know or care about her. but then some random 12 year old gets reaped in district 12 and her sister volunteers for her. and her sister’s name is katniss, which of course he knows is kind of a desperate, starving person’s sort of plant in district 12, because lucy gray told him about it, but that’s just a coincidence. she DOES kind of remind him of her, but that’s probably just because they both have dark hair and they’re both from district 12 and she really made an impact at the reaping. but then she allies herself with the little girl from district 11 who has no chance of winning, so she’s not just using rue as a means to an end, she really cares about her. and then when rue dies, she sings the meadow song as she covers her body with flowers. and the meadow song, well, that was one of lucy gray’s songs, and he didn’t think anyone still knew any of lucy gray’s songs. and then she fucking WINS, and everyone in the capitol loves her and peeta and prim, and at the crowning ceremony she’s wearing a mockingjay pin, and of course she couldn’t possibly know what it means to him, and when he compliments it she says “thank you. it’s from my district.” and that’s just in the hunger games! not even to mention that the symbol of the districts’ revolution is a mockingjay, and katniss becomes that symbol, and eventually it is lucy gray’s mockingjay that takes him down.
like lucy gray’s impact fr. he DID succeed in erasing her, no one in district 12 remembers her, but they do remember the songs and the birds, and snow realizes that he could never fully erase her. probably anyone in district 12 could tell you about the mockingjays.

i know haymitch lied to katniss and peeta about their role in the rebellion, but throughout the entire series, i think the single worst thing he does is the “more boy trouble?” comment near the end of mockingjay.
she was literally just a tribute in two games and the face of the rebellion, none of which by choice. she lost her home. lost her sister. and he reduces it to boy trouble. what an infuriating comment from an older male mentor.

by the way if you happen to think that haymitch, katniss and peeta are all found family you are sorely wrong and they do not have a familial relationship by any sense of the word. they do not have the care and love that family do, even if katniss “considers” haymitch as family in a way. he's not a replacement parent for them, he's simply an adult figure in which went the extra mile to ensure their safety. furthermore, a lot of the time peeta was an afterthought to him unless it had anything to do with katniss (you know. his star tribute.)
whether you like it or not, katniss and peeta bare importance for both the reason that haymitch is attached to them and wants them to live their lives (as their mentor,) but they're also his success story. those two ideas to exist. they don't have to play happy family when if they had died, they'd of been another 2 children to list off.

Friend! I’ve been meaning to ask for a while (keeping in mind I’m like three chapters behind on DFYCW because life’s a bitch so no spoilers 😂) do you have any like celebrity face claims or anything for what you think grown up LGB would look like?
Friend! Hello! 💗
No spoilers here I promise! 😘
I actually don’t have anyone inparticular in mind for grown LGB! I’ve floated a couple of names and had some suggested but I can’t settle on one person, Isaid I would cast her after I saw the movie but I still can’t settle!
I was thinking about this yesterday when I was rewatching The 100, Paige Turco came up as a slight contender. I’ve had Holly Marie Combs suggested but I’m not 100% happy with anyone I’ve found as yet, so I’m open to suggestions!
I do however have Haymitch, Effie, Cecelia, and Chaff casted thanks to the help of the lovely @kahlanmars!
Below the cut, in case anyone else has their own in mind and doesn’t want that ruined!
For Haymitch I have Thom Morrel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Effie, Lili Reinhart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cecelia has Camilla Mendes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes these two were chosen because then I can have pictures of them together:
Tumblr media
And for Chaff, Charles Michael Davis:

So in total we have:

As I’ve mentioned, I’m all about the Haymitch/Katniss/Peeta parallels, but I am SO excited for the “new character” parallels we will get.
Yes, I want to preface by saying I also want characters to stand on their own. Like Haymitch doesn’t need to be interpreted as a parallel to Katniss to still be a well-written character. He has his own (fictional) existence outside of Katniss’s relation to him (even though we only see these characters through Katniss’s perspective LMAO). He can be analyzed as a character without Katniss.
But in general, character/story/other parallels can make fiction and fandom SO engaging. Especially because, other than canon material explicitly drawing a parallel, they are drawn up by the audience. And people can interpret things in different and sometimes contrasting ways.
Anyway, mini general thoughts over: onto SotR
We are 100% going to get more Haymitch “content” (I’m sorry I dislike using that word 😭)
But we will also be getting more Maysilee, and more of at least TWO other Hunger Games tributes that we can engage with. Not even to mention all the other side characters we will likely get to see (some familiar faces like Caesar, as well as possibly new ones)
We might be able to see just how alike Katniss and her father are. Or maybe even better, how alike Prim and her father are.
We will see Haymitch with “his love,” and who knows how many relational comparisons that will create! I’ve already touched on this before but I think it warrants repeating here: Haymitch and his relationship to “his girl” (btw I CANNOT wait to get her name, I don’t like just referring to her as “his girl” lmao) might look VERY similar to other relationships we’ve seen in THG…or very different. I hope it’s like a blend of both, so we can get a lot of fandom discussions from different perspectives.
Who knows how many scene parallels there will be, not just from the original trilogy but even to tbosas. We have quite the expansive world of Panem now, and I’m choosing to be optimistic about how SotR will affect it.
