Gina I'm still know some people from my highschool who were hard core directioners when the band was at peak. The one thing i fail to understand still is they don't hate Simon like we all do, they actually believe in haylor. Like how can you be a directioner since the beginning and still not differentiate between black and white. They were also on twitter back in the day and weren't Just casual fans. I remember them bringing cakes to school on boys birthday, doing the bse dance in hs.

Hi love. There are plenty of people who were hardcore fans and believe H*ylor was a real relationship. To this day people think they’re secretly in love with each other. 🙄🙄🙄 And I’d imagine if you weren’t a larrie and didn’t care about closeting and didn’t believe Harry and/or Louis were gay, and maybe didn’t believe that Louis was being gaslighted the first two years in the band to think he was unimportant to the band and couldn’t sing, then why would you harbor any bad feelings toward Simon?

Just because you were there at the beginning doesn’t mean you were paying attention. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Before we start

I feel like I need to make a pinned post to introduce myself before I go on further with 'crying shaking throwing up' posts. So. Here it is!

You can call me R. I'm a '96 baby, not in the sense that I'm actually a baby but in the sense "you CAN and should do the math" because I know this blog will be updated so sporadically I'm not gonna update my age. Right now I'm 28, but you could be reading this as I'm approaching my 30s.

Three things about me: I'm haunted by Sherlock Holmes and the ghost of johnlock, I'm a TS scholar in the sense that I've been listening and reading and analysing her shit since i was at the ripe age of 13 years old, and all this should lead y'all to understand that I'm both a tinhatter and a deeply skeptic person. I have trust issues AND I like making theories, is that so bad?

Now, how the fuck did I end up here?

Imagine: it's the year of our lord 2024. I've been away from the 1D fandom, and the Larry fandom even more specifically (I was a lurker) for almost ten (10) years.

I used to lurk in Larry spaces between ?I think late 2011? to 2014. You can imagine what kind of fun year was 2012 to me. (Haylor is still, to this day, my Roman empire.)

Back in the day, I was a bit gullible (not to the point of believing the reborn dolls shit, sorry), so my thoughts in the last ten years have always been "well I don't know what actually happened between them: maybe they were, maybe they weren't" because i was Young (15 to 18) and not from an english speaking country and I probably missed a lot of nuance, and i didn't have the tools to analyse that stuff critically.

I didn't even listen to their albums unless a track was sneaked into my Spotify algorithm. And even then, I didn't pay that attention to lyrics or anything.

I'm blissfully ignorant, and I know I'm happy.

Fast forward to last month: the clock app (we all know the one) recommends me a video with Love of my life (as a TS scholar I cannot shorten it for fear of confusing the two). I'm like: huh. Inch resting. Let's hear the whole song. Oh, it's about "England"? I did not know an entire country could take a plane! Welcome back Sherlock from the hit BBC serie saying he missed "London" while talking about John, I guess?

Now I'm being silly goofy, but that kind of shocked me deeply to my core. Because like, okay. You're a songwriter and you're a DramatiqueTM songwriter at that. But. You WERE the love of my LIFE when you've barely reached a quarter of your life is objectively insane. That's something that has left a mark on you. And somehow I deeply doubt it's about one of his highly public relationship with one of the "blue eyed models" that Blondie was talking about.

So I started to dig into their songwriting catalogues, and boi oh boi. My frontal lobe is fully developed (hopefully), I have little to no parasocial relationship with two guys who I haven't looked for in the last ten (10) years, I'm an adult with a job and a degree and a second one on the way, and yet my first thought reading their lyrics was "oh, you guys are still both at the fucking restaurant, huh".

And now, here I am, with a new sideblog because I can't inundate my friends' dashboards with stuff we all agreed we outgrew ten years ago. I know I made this introduction so easily recognisable my friends could see it's me from a mile away. If you end up here, sorry for the war flashbacks! I love you!

Now that Harry seems to have gone back to a relationship mostly out of the public eye ala Hamille with Taylor Russell, does this give you any more to reflect on the Olivia pairing? I ask bc fans clearly prefer this approach, perhaps bc for many it keeps the fantasy boyfriend alive - the woman is a side character and someone they can mostly ignore.

Regardless of how real or fake holivia was there was certainly some drama and attention added directly by Olivia (vs a pr nightmare getting out of control) which the GP ate up and added to Harry’s celeb status BUT his core fans on all sides almost entirely strongly disliked. There are some shades of haylor for me in pairing Harry with a woman with her own fame/power to get him to different level of celebrity (tho for me the length of haylor “proper” is much more suggestive of an actual publicity arrangement than what happened with Olivia).

I agree that high profile dating added to Harry's celebrity status, while also adding a lot of chaos and variables, which have a lot of downsides.

But I think your framing is imagining the options as doing what will increase Harry's celebrity among the general public or keeping fans happy. I don't think Harry or his team care very much if fans are happy - I don't think that's the metric they use.

Fans - particularly the sort of very invested fans who use social media and who it's possible to know if they're happy or not - don't need to be happy to be useful. In fact I'd argue almost the opposite - the natural state of a fan is discontent - and that drives fans greater engagement than contentment ever could.

Ooh Zoe you're not the only one to think folklore is Haylor coded, i think she went back to this rs cause it's the one where she never had clear answers, a clean breakup. So she's wondering over and over what could have been, and what were we ?

Also with all her exes he's having a big carreer, he's been everywhere. I'm sure he's in his feelings, pretend it's been a decade ans it doesn't matter but you know, WE know !!!

i don't think that's what folklore was, and I also know I'm not the only one to see it... like I said, I have been quite superior about it... I think that sometimes haylories have a tendency to be the loudest parts of the haylor fandom and newbies get swept in their shit. which is where we get people insisting that william bowery is really harry, even now.

I still think folklore is mostly, at its core, about losing her masters. the 1 isn't harry. it's scott. it always was and always will be.

i just think that there's some connection there between the lines of trauma and the feelings. and i think that the reason folklore (and evermore) work so well is that it gives a spot to process those little threads of connection between her hurt by making it fictional.

I think some songs and lines started with one thing in mind and became about another, and I think like the 1 started in feelings about scott and tied into feelings about harry and exile started in feelings about harry and tied into feelings about scott.... does that make sense?

have you read the daisy jones book? it’s my favorite book and daisy emotionally reminds me so much of taylor.. or at least the “young” taylor (red era more specifically). how she craves to express herself through her music and her singer-songwriting, how she’s honest and vulnerable in her music and it ended up creating her own personal hell/hurt because she had to perform those songs over and over again and reopen the wound (red tour atw). she’s the red album, yoyok, dear reader, the archer and so on personified.. in the way that daisy and billy are artistic soulmates/twin flames meant to meet but not meant to be also reminds me a little of haylor

yes! i read it a couple of weeks ago, after the show ended. there were aspects of it that reminded me so strongly of her and some of what she's gone through. obviously taylor has quite a different background, and in certain ways personality type, and she has her unique triumphs and struggles, but the passion in daisy and her ambition and her belief in her own talents and her need to express herself creatively and sing her own music and connect to the world through that art is taylor to the core. that idea that both her strength is the diaristic honesty and vulnerability of her songwriting, yet it also makes that carving into your wounds and reliving heartbreak and exposing that repeatedly on stage in front of watchful eyes dissecting everything you do. daisy's care towards people (especially young women) who are fans too, versus how awful the press is towards her and how unhesitatingly they publish that cruelty.

this also really made me think of her, even though it comes from billy:

while narratively the reason daisy learns both selflessly and self-caringly to let that flame go, it's very, "remember when you couldn't take the heat? i walked out and said, 'i'm settin' you free...'" letting him go is the right decision for everyone, and the only decision that can not only prevent more hurt, but rescue all of their futures. it's also: sometimes giving up is the strong thing.

and then daisy's growth, her maturity and her approach to love transforming, her embrace of her power, her realization of what she has to let go, her recovery, there are a lot of mirrors there even if they're not exact, the meaning underneath is connected.

i posted this but it struck me hard in the show and in the book how very similar to taylor's journey this revelation is - and even after recent events, i still believe this is true and resonant and such an important thing that's been learned (and that irl will be carried forward):

passion shouldn't only be pain, and creativity should be nurtured rather than burned to the ground in a frenzy, and love shouldn't be a source of destruction, and once you learn those things and hold fast to your voice and your value, you can face what you have to face, and hold onto what's true and good.

hold on to childlike whims and moonlight swims and your blazing self-respect.

I honestly think hard-core Maylors are exclusively people who are fans of both of them individually and thus don't really care about their other relationships. Outside of that, I think the new swiftie subset might have been Haylors. I've also seen a surprising number of Gaylors convert to Maylorism😭

the latter actually makes a weird amount of sense to me because 1) Gaylors and Maylors have delusion in common 2) Gaylors and Maylors are both into conspiracies and what I know from people who are into conspiracies is they generally don’t seem to give a fuck what the conspiracy actually is and seem to believe ones that directly contradict each other even - they just believe all sorts of wack ass shit lmao and there’s actually some science behind why but I can’t remember it now 3) Gaylors have always wanted Taylor to be edgier than she is - they’ve also wanted Karlie to be WAY edgier than that girl is - and Matty is by far the edgiest option available like irl for Taylor. I would like your opinion on all too well tv 10 minute version. I always wonder about the sacred prayer line....and that she choose the wedding theme in I bet you think about me. Something about her relationship with Jake really messed with her. Was it really this short??? She referenced about breaking up multiple times....how in that short amount of time together??? Also her performances of all too well back than...they were sooo emotional, but wasn't that the time, she broke up with Harry??? And sorry, but one more thing, I'm not a native speaker, so I really don't understand the your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones line...what does it mean? ATW, as we all know widely considered to be about Jake. We also know this partial lyric of the '1st draft' from February 2011, which has the scarf (but no refrigerator light) and some lyrics which she hid with the paper in the lover journal that are presumably not part of the song / what we knew of it in 2019. (Steered it right into the ground is fascinating and reminds me of 'you drove us off the road')

To Fallon, she started talking about ATW10MV she said she was 22, then corrected herself to 21. Which maybe she was confused but is turning 21 is in the song and she's particular about age. The story she is telling is not the '1st draft' above, this is a later much longer version and potentially not the same muse:

The way that this song was written was, I was going through a bit of a sad time and I was 22 and I was in band rehearsals. I think I was 21 when I wrote this, and I was in band rehearsals for a tour that I was about to go on called the ‘Speak Now Tour.’

The Speak Now tour had 3 rehearsal periods for ATW10MV to be from:

January 2011 - tour started in Asia in February 2011, the same time that the '1st Draft' was written. So this is too early. The tour then went to Europe till March 2011. I've posted before about how she and Harry were in the same city and may have met in 2011.

May 2011 - She had a well publicised rehearsal for the US leg in which she told tickets to as a tornado benefit. The US leg then ran till November.

March 2012 - She had 4 months off before the last last Australian leg. The only rehearsal dates where she was 22, also the period Holy Ground was written which thematically fits. This is before Haylor was seen at the Kids Choice Awards.

The final ATW is presented as about Jake (who she dated for 7 weeks) who said [ATW] “has nothing to do with me".

So I think of ATW as about a composite character, Taylor first and foremost, but for muses I feel it took many lives, John, Jake and well... will we just pretend this isn't there?

Because Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield isn't letting that link go, he has brought it up in his book, in podcasts and in Rolling Stone.

Back to your actual question the 'Your Brooklyn' line

From when your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones I'm a soldier who's returning half her weight

This line is hard to decipher such and I can't say I completely understand it. Overall I think these lines are saying the relationship damaged her self-esteem to the point of self-destructive behaviour:

"your brooklyn" - film includes a scene where he is holding court, making her feel excluded. I take the 'your' of a place (that is not any one person's" as saying the muse made her feel out of place.

"broke her skin and bones" - skin and bones is emotional and physical devastation, it is both the core of Taylor and brings to mind being gaunt.

"I'm a soldier who's returning" - like the central metaphor in The Great War the war is the relationship. Here she has returned after the war gaunt and malnourished.

"half her weight" - Sadly I take this literally, but self esteem also.

On the topic of this muse... Taylor said:
