I needed guidance, so I went to my friend’s house. He was a Hawaiian elder, a chief or something, so I knew he’d be able to help me with my problems.

While I was there telling him what was bothering me, this little gray puppy ran up and hopped in my lap, started licking me all over. He told me the dog just showed up one day, so he’d been feeding it, but he can’t touch it since he’s allergic to dogs. It was so cute, this little gray thing with dark gray eyebrows and a dark gray moustache.

The elder had to get up to get his allergy medication, and on his way to the bathroom he told me I should take my boat and sail, go see the world. I was looking at the art on his walls and decided I’d take the dog with me, as a companion, so I named him Eyebrows ‘cause of his dark eyebrows.

Anyone that spent time with Evan Buckley was quickly privy to that fact that the guy was a people person to the core. He had a way about him that made you feel immediately at ease. His heart shone through his eyes and he made you feel as if you were the most important thing in the world.

This quality was an asset in the field, where it was equally part of the job to help soothe panic, adults and kids alike — especially kids. He could pull faces and relate to them on a level that was sincere and genuine and not as some adult that sounded fake. It was a trait that Tommy envied.

But a not well known fact of that trait was that it extended to animals. Evan loved animals, particularly dogs. 

When Tommy first brought Evan to his home and introduced him to his baby girl Lani, he was nervous. Lani, a retired Army pup, was minorly territorial of him and was guarded towards strangers. It didn't help that his previous paramours would essentially ignore her like she was just another piece of furniture about the place.

But Evan.

Evan.

“Hey, lovebug!” Tommy gives his pup a loving rubdown and kisses. “I’d like you to meet my new friend, Evan.”

Lani gives Evan a cool stare, standing ramrod straight positioned between Tommy and him. Unperturbed, Evan immediately crouched to her level; acknowledging her existence fully — something so minor but so important to Tommy that he froze as he watched them. Evan patted his knees as he knelt on the floor, calling Lani to him softly. And once Lani gave him an experimental sniff and let him pet her, Evan produced a stuffed helicopter out of his coat pocket and Tommy almost proposed to him right then and there.
