Aliens don't understand human birthdays after they find out human birth is really painful (most alien births are relatively simple and painless) and wonder why humans would celebrate the day they came into the world screaming and covered in blood after their mother struggled for hours through a painful birth.

The humans are like 'it's the day I came into the world and marks me getting older! We celebrate being alive another year!'

And the aliens are like 'why the fuck you celebrating getting old? You live like two seconds! (aliens also tend to live a lot longer). but seeing as celebrating birthdays is one of the few things almost everyone on earth celebrates, the aliens learn how to bake cake and sing happy birthday.

now that my ocd has calmed down, I think that no matter the problems with xiaohongshu or chinese cencorship, I still think it's monumental that americans (and to some extent) the rest of the world are able to make communication with a group of people who have been otherwise isolated bc of the chinese fire wall.

it's been emotional seeing chinese people get emotional that for the first time the rest of the world has come to them, and are having this moment where people are able to break down cultural resentment.
