#Repost @thehopspur We stopped in Milwaukee at @centralwatersmke for a flight and some full pours. The space is really neat. It most recently was the Captain Pabst Pilot House, but it was originally a German Methodist church built in 1873. This weekend they happened to drop a new beer called S’getti, a collab with @transientartisanales. Yes it is “Spaghet” inspired. How wonderfully apt. We also enjoyed the Old Country Italian Pilsner (also a collab with Transient), the Festival Express kvass style Festbier (a collab with @ahnapeebrewery), MKE 1 DDH DIPA and Sentimentality, a black IPA. The space was really cool, the beers delicious and they had football on the large screen. We love their barrel aging program, but we were driving and decided to do it next time. I grew up in the City, capital because it was the New York City. Home had a lot of things to offer in the way of social and culinary experiences, but the one thing I can say I missed out on as a kid were Tree houses. Secret hideaways in the sky with hemp rope ladders, trap doors, and built to withstand my chubby ass sitting up in it. Well suffice to say Dad couldn’t build a tree house on a lamp post or on the whimpy tomato plants in the backyard, so I went without, until I moved to Boston a few years ago and found out someone built a Treehouse Brewing Company. When I found out the Treehouse was two hours away I figured: Have Beer? Will Travel!

Monson is a town ideally suited for a brewery, as it was settled by a tavern owner named Richard Fellows back in the mid 1600′s. Jump four hundred some odd years ahead and you have some of the most exciting and well crafted brews in North-East. Whether it’s the juiciness and tropical fruit American hops of Julius, or its evil twin, Alter Ego the Mosaic and Amarillo driven version of the same base. Most recently Treehouse Brewing released Bear in its new 16oz Can format and let me tell you it’s a game changer.

In a world where IPA’s dominate the market, focusing on hops character it’s brave to feature something malt focused with out barrel aging or have some mutant yeast binge on barley sugar until the beer tastes more like vodka than beer. Bear pours out dark brown somewhere in the world of demi-glace or diner coffee, creamy white foam and soapy lacing. Aromas of toffee, and biscuits with honey come through even when the beer is at cellar temp. The body is medium plus with assertive carbonation. The finish has balance, and by that I mean that while there’s caramel maltiness the brewer has brought in some bitterness to keep the sugars from being cloying. Without exaggeration it’s easily the best brown ale I’ve had and worth the hike and wait in line.

The lines at Treehouse are exactly what you’ve heard: Long but efficient. It can take as long as 2 hours to get a growler fill but you can pick up cans while waiting and they even give you a order form to drop at the end of the line. You don’t even have to be there to wait just drop off the form, grab your cans, and go to lunch. I’d suggest bringing a friend or two to keep you distracted, maybe if you’re lucky enough that person is your girlfriend who will drive all the way out to Monson and back then drop you off to work. Sometimes she forgets her jacket and you have to share your blue flannel and it’s fifty degrees out. I’m lucky enough to have brought my best friend and partner on this trip and maybe that’s why I loved the beer so much. I’m probably and unfair judge considering but that’s even more reason to visit try it for yourself.
