I agree with all that's said above but I'd like to specifically point out how awful it is that synagogues have to have armed guards and check IDs.

Our shuls are community homes. We want everyone to feel welcome as soon as they step through the door. We want everyone to feel loved. Armed guards and ID checks don't feel very welcoming.

But they're necessary.

We need our community to be safe, and it hurts to sacrifice some hospitality to keep safe, but it's necessary. Pikuach nefesh. My synagogue is fortunate that we can afford guards and metal detectors, and bag x-rays on the High Holy Days. I've never attended shul without security guards there. We all know their names and they know ours, Hello-goodmorning-shabbatshalom-haveaniceweekend, friendly and wonderful people protecting us. But we wish we didn't need to be protected. The metal detectors are a more recent addition. They used to be just at High Holy Days, when many more people are coming. Now it's always, and High Holy Days have bag x-rays, as well. It's necessary. It's harder for the smaller shuls, the ones that need security but can't afford it. I went to a small synagogue in France once, and they had the front door locked, with an old man in charge of opening it- and asking some questions to the visitors before doing so, because France has serious problems with antisemitism and not knowing who's coming in is dangerous.

Before October 7th, amidst the Rosh Hashanah preparations and festivities, two different people on two different days called in bomb threats at my synagogue. A SWAT team had to come in and check for bombs- it was a false alarm both times, BH, but how could we have known? After 10/7, we're on higher alert. Already-high antisemitism rates have soared. Now sometimes plainclothes security guards are in the halls of the synagogue, not just at the entrance. They haven't had to do anything, and BZ"H they never will have to, but we need the contingency. We only just replaced the hastily-reconstructed, painted-on stained glass put in after a pipe bomb exploded outside our shul twenty years ago. BH no one was hurt. We all go to shul knowing that this could happen again. We trust our security guards to protect us, but we wish we didn't have to.

I don't know if non-Jews can understand this feeling, of walking into your sanctuary both thankful for the people outside protecting you and resentful of the fact that they have to, that the world hates your people so much that you can't be sure your community space will be left in peace. It's horrible. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
