People may be scared of me. Of my words, my presence, my silence. Or maybe it’s my edges—the parts of me that don’t fit neatly into their expectations. And, truthfully, I might be scared of them too. Of their judgments, their power to dismiss, their ability to look right through me as if I were made of air.
Either way, fear creates distance. A quiet chasm between who we are and who we think the other person might be. It’s the shadow that hovers just behind a handshake, the hesitation in a conversation that never fully takes off.
But here’s the thing: fear doesn’t have to win. It doesn’t have to define the space between us. Because fear, as heavy as it feels, is also fragile. A single word—kind, honest, unexpected—can crack it. A single moment of vulnerability can turn fear into understanding.
So maybe they’re scared. Maybe I am too. Either way, the question isn’t why—it’s what now? Do we let fear draw the lines, or do we step over them?
The choice is always ours.

Dengang: 1944, fotograf ukendt. Nu: 2. november 2024, Jens Voigt.
Copenhagen / Copenhagen.
On 19 September 1944, the Danish police were disbanded by the German occupation authorities, who had long distrusted the police. Among other things, the Germans had noted a striking lack of desire to investigate the resistance movement's sabotage. But when Denmark needed a force of law and order, the Germans accepted that municipal guards were established in the individual urban and rural municipalities. Here, Copenhagen's municipal security guards are photographed in front of their security office on Halmtorvet. It is my grandfather Arne Holger Voigt who sits as number 3 from the left in the front. Only other currently is named in the picture is Otto Klemmensen who is standing on the far right.
Then: 1944, photographer unknown. Now: November 2, 2024, Jens Voigt.
