The last thing he heard was a snap.
The last thing he felt was pain.
The last thing he saw was the mask. His eyes never left the visor that covered Lord Vader’s face.
Krk. That was the sound his neck made when his superior snapped it in front of his troops. His friends. Brothers.
“Fox…” A familiar voice calls out to him, rousing him from his… slumber? Fox cracks open his eyes with a low groan. With a couple slow blinks, he remembers what happened.
Vader.
Fox shoots up, his shaking hands clawing at his neck. The neck that should be snapped in half. Yet, here he is… somewhere between life and death.
He looks around, taking in everything. Soft grass is just barely illuminated by a setting sun, painting the sky a medley of colors. He’s still in full armor, minus his helmet, which is resting in the grass beside him.
A figure sits several yards away, overlooking the sunset, sitting on a somewhat flat rock. The man wears armor just like Fox’s, but it's plain white. He turns his shaven head so Fox can see his profile. An aurebesh 5 is tattooed to his right temple, accompanied with a Kaminoan medpatch on his head.
“Hey,” he says.
“Fives…” Fox’s eyes widen, his breath picks up, his hands get clammy. He killed him. Shot him square in the chest.
How is this possible…
“Relax, Fox… we’re both dead here. You look like you’ve just seen a ghost.” Fives grins, patting the empty space on the rock beside him.
“I-I…”
Fives’ gaze softens, the sun hitting his amber eyes just right. “C’mere.”
Fox slowly gets to his feet, his hands shaking at his sides. He lowers himself down on the rock beside Fives.
“What… What is this place?”
“I don’t know… It’s pretty, though, isn’t it?” Fox nods, trying to keep from locking eyes with his brother.
“I’ve been here since… you know,” Fives continues. Fox knows. He knows all too well, having to live with the guilt of shooting your own comrade. In front of his squad, General Skywalker, and Rex. “You know… Echo’s alive. I don’t think you know him, but he’s one of my batchmates. He and I were the last survivors of Domino Squad, Fox. We all thought he died… but he’s not here. He’s down there… Everyone else is up here…”
“I… I’ve heard of Echo. Rex talked about you guys… all good things, ‘course.”
“I’d hope so,” Fives chuckles.
A few moments of silence follows.
“So… Ponds is up here? And Keeli?” Fox looks away from the sky, fidgeting with his gloves.
Fives looks at him, his eyes crinkling at the corners in sympathy. “Yeah… They’re here…”
Fox gnaws on his lower lip nervously. “Listen… about what happened, Fives-”
“Don’t worry about it, Fox. You didn’t have a choice. Good soldiers follow orders.” Fives puts his gloved hand on Fox’s knee, giving it a little squeeze.
“No.”
Fives gives him a confused look, about to pull his hand away when Fox grabs it and holds it tightly.
“Let me apologize. Please…”
“Fox, it’s not your fault.”
“I… I could’ve…”
“What? Refused the order, leading to a court martial? Fox, you had no choice.”
Fox’s jaw works, trying to find something to say. His grip on his brother goes slack and he drops his hand.
“I’m sorry, though…”
“If I accept your apology, will you finally rest in peace?” Fives sighs.
“Yes,” Fox says with no hesitation present.
“Fine… I forgive you for killing me. You’re dead, Fox, you shouldn’t be so tense. We get to be free of… everything.”
“Yeah but… I’m sorry.”
“You know what you should be sorry for? That haircut.
“What’s wrong with my hair?” Fox runs his hand through his graying curls.
“You could’ve done anything with it and you got a mullet?”
“But it’s a good mullet.”
“Whatever.”

How to Produce Music at Home
Introduction
Welcome to Your Home Studio Journey
Embark on an exciting adventure into the world of home music production! If you've ever dreamed of creating your own music but felt daunted by the idea of setting up a home studio, you've come to the right place. At marvsalberto.com, we’re dedicated to making the process easy and guiding you through every step.
Why Produce Music at Home?
Why should you consider producing music at home? It’s incredibly convenient. No more booking expensive studio time or trying to fit your creative moments into someone else’s schedule. Having your own space allows you to experiment and refine your sound at your own pace. Whether you’re a budding artist or an experienced musician, a home studio offers limitless creative potential.
Getting Started with Your Home Studio
Understanding Your Goals
Before diving into the technical details, take a moment to define what you want to achieve. Are you looking to record vocals, produce electronic music, or create full-band demos? Your goals will determine the equipment and setup you need.
Budgeting for Your Studio
Budget is a crucial factor in building your home studio. You don’t need to break the bank to get started. Focus on essential equipment and start with the basics. You can always upgrade as you progress.
Essential Equipment for Home Music Production
Computer and Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
Your computer and DAW are the core of your home studio. Choose a computer with sufficient RAM and storage capacity. For your DAW, popular software options include Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro X. Each has its own strengths, so pick one that suits your workflow and genre.
Audio Interface
An audio interface is essential for converting analog signals, like your voice or instrument, into digital ones that your computer can process. Look for interfaces with quality preamps and multiple input/output options.
Microphones
A quality microphone can significantly enhance your recordings. For vocals, a condenser mic like the Audio-Technica AT2020 is a great starting point. For instruments, dynamic mics like the Shure SM57 are versatile and reliable.
Studio Monitors
Unlike regular speakers, studio monitors offer a flat frequency response, helping you hear your music accurately. Brands like KRK, Yamaha, and JBL provide a range of monitors suitable for different budgets.
Setting Up Your Space
Choosing the Right Room
The location of your studio can impact your recordings. Choose a quiet room, away from external noise, with minimal reflective surfaces. Avoid rooms with many windows or hard surfaces, as they can create unwanted echoes.
Acoustic Treatment Basics
Acoustic treatment helps manage reflections and improve sound quality. Start with bass traps in the corners and absorption panels on the walls. This doesn’t have to be costly; even DIY options can be effective.
Setting Up Your Equipment
Position your desk and monitors correctly for the best sound. The “equilateral triangle” setup, where your listening position and the two monitors form a triangle, ensures balanced sound delivery. Keep your microphone stand and pop filter within reach for easy access during recordings.
Optimizing Your Workflow
Cable Management
A tidy setup is not just aesthetically pleasing but also functional. Use cable ties and organizers to keep your cables neat. This prevents unwanted noise and makes troubleshooting easier.
Ergonomic Setup
Ensure your setup is comfortable for long periods. An ergonomic chair, a desk at the right height, and well-placed equipment can prevent strain and keep you productive.
Software Essentials
Choosing Your DAW
Your DAW is central to your music production. Whether it’s the loop-based workflow of Ableton Live or the extensive plugin support in FL Studio, choose one that aligns with your needs. Most DAWs offer free trials, so explore a few before making a decision.
Must-have Plugins and VSTs
Plugins and VSTs expand your sound palette. Essential ones include EQs, compressors, reverb, and delay. Consider investing in high-quality plugins like those from Waves, FabFilter, or Native Instruments.
Sample Libraries
Sample libraries provide you with ready-made sounds and loops, especially useful for genres like hip-hop, EDM, and pop. Websites like Splice and Loopmasters offer extensive libraries for every genre and style.
Recording Techniques
Recording Vocals
Vocals are often the centerpiece of a track. Use a pop filter to reduce plosives and record in a treated room to minimize background noise. Experiment with mic placement to find the sweet spot.
Recording Instruments
Each instrument has unique recording techniques. For guitars, direct input or miking an amp works great. For drums, multiple mics are usually required. Always aim for the best raw sound to simplify the mixing process.
MIDI Recording
MIDI recording offers flexibility. You can edit performances, change instrument sounds, and automate parameters easily. Make sure to quantize your MIDI notes to keep the timing tight.
Mixing and Mastering Basics
Introduction to Mixing
Mixing involves blending all your tracks into a cohesive piece. Focus on balancing levels, panning instruments to create space, and using EQ to carve out frequencies.
Introduction to Mastering
Mastering is the final polish on your track. The goal is to make it sound great on all playback systems. Use limiting, EQ, and compression to increase loudness and clarity without losing dynamics.
Essential Mixing Tools
Invest in good-quality headphones and reference monitors. Use a spectrum analyzer to visualize frequencies and a metering tool to monitor levels. Plugins like iZotope Ozone can also assist in mastering.
DIY Acoustic Treatments
Bass Traps
Bass traps control low-frequency energy that tends to build up in corners. They are crucial for accurate low-end monitoring.
Diffusers
Diffusers scatter sound waves, helping to control reflections without deadening the room. These are best placed on the rear wall or ceiling.
Absorption Panels
Absorption panels control mid and high-frequency reflections. Place them at first reflection points, where sound waves first bounce off the walls.
Advanced Techniques and Tips
Layering Sounds
Layering sounds can add depth and complexity to your tracks. Layer similar sounds with slight variations to create a richer texture.
Automation
Automation allows you to add dynamic changes throughout your track. Automate volume, panning, and effects to add movement and interest.
Sound Design Tips
Get creative with sound design. Use synthesis, sampling, and effects to craft unique sounds. Experimentation is key to finding your signature sound.
Staying Creative and Inspired
Overcoming Creative Blocks
Creative blocks happen to everyone. Change your environment, collaborate with others, or try a new genre to reignite your creativity.
Collaborating Remotely
Collaboration is easier than ever with online tools. Use platforms like Splice or Dropbox to share projects and work together, no matter where you are.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Dealing with Latency
Latency is a common issue in home studios. Lower your buffer size during recording and increase it during mixing. Use direct monitoring if available.
Fixing Audio Quality Problems
Ensure clean recordings by using high-quality cables and maintaining your equipment. Address issues like hums, buzzes, and pops using noise gates or filters.
Expanding Your Studio Over Time
Investing in Better Gear
As you grow, consider upgrading your equipment. Higher-end mics, preamps, and monitors can elevate your productions.
Adding More Instruments
Expanding your instrument collection adds versatility to your productions. Keys, guitars, and a drum set provide a broad range of sonic possibilities.
Sharing Your Music with the World
Online Platforms for Distribution
Platforms like SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and Spotify allow you to share your music with a global audience. Each has its own features and audience, so choose those most suited to your goals.
Promoting Your Music
Promoting your music is crucial for reaching your audience. Use social media, engage with music communities, and consider paid promotions to increase exposure.
Conclusion
Recap of Key Points
Setting up a home studio and producing music at home is an exciting and fulfilling journey. From choosing the right equipment to mastering your tracks, each step enhances your creative toolkit.

Day 4 - Rijeka
And... It's raining. Much more than yesterday, though luckily it's still coming and going.
Tumblr media
After a walk in the old town I decide to take the advice from lovely Tumblr user @notasgoodasseven to go see Trsat castle. Rijeka has a day ticket for the buses! Very good, since taking buses is one of my favourite activities XD especially when it's raining XD
The bus climbs up a hill going through a very interesting part of town, where small houses and big high rises are meshed together in a surprising but not unpleasant mix.
On the last stretch of the road to Trsat you get a beautiful view of the entire old town and the harbour; if the rain stops for a bit I might go downhill by foot to get a better view.
The castle is small and quite pretty, they turned most of the court into a giant openair bar? It must be lovely when it's open in good weather.
Tumblr media
I don't even have to go find a good viewpoint later because you can see everything from here!
Tumblr media
I might come back when it's dark to see it with all the Christmas lights on.
I get a spinach burek from a bakery and head to the bus stop to go to the computer museum... But I discover the computer museum it's only open on Saturdays during winter :( apparently I could have ask them via the website to open it anyway, but a) it's too late and b) it would have put too much pressure on my visit!
While I'm on the bus going back down I see the sun peeking out of the clouds, illuminating a strip of sea in the most beautiful manner. It stopped raining so I decide to get down the bus once I get to the city centre and walk, but of course the moment I get down... It starts raining again 😅
Tumblr media
(every time it stopped raining I took a picture XD)
The good news is that the bus day ticket I bought this morning actually covers a much bigger area that I thought, so I decide to just get on a suburban bus that follows the coast down south and just hope for some brief moments of sunlight (in any case, it's better than getting soaked while walking in the streets, not able to see anything because of my umbrella XD)
It's almost ridiculous the amount of joy just being on a bus with the outside the window gives me.
Due to some miscalculation and forgetfulness, I end up waiting almost an hour for a bus in the middle of nowhere (well, there was a cafè/bar, but it was one of those places basically just full of men where everyone looks at you - not a man, not from around here - like an exotic curiosity and with a hint of hostility, so I just had coffee, used the toilet and left). But while I was waiting for my bus the light changed: though it was still pretty cloudy there was a lot more visibility and it was in general much more pleasant, and I actually got to see the island of Krk from a distance!
Tumblr media
(I walked on the road to get this picture, I thought I was going to die XD)
Going back to Rijeka the weather kept getting greyer and foggier and wetter, and I wished I could have kept going south but... not this time!
Tumblr media
After a brief stop at the hotel to get the things I forgot I decided to take another suburban bus, this time going north. Sadly by the time I actually got on the bus it was starting to get dark, so I didn't see as much from the bus (but it was still lovely). I went to Opatija and from what I could see from the bus it looked really lovely, though when I got off the bus it started raining again, so I just waited for the bus back (how many minutes, how many HOURS I spent waiting for buses today? Probably too many XD but it was worth it).
I went back to Trsat castle after dark and it was indeed very pretty with all the Christmas lights on and the stalls and bar open (though it was still mostly empty, I guess I went too early).
Tumblr media
At least four people today have tried speaking to me in Croatian at bus stops etc good job Maddalena for never looking like a tourist I guess XD (this tends to happen to me everywhere I go, people just assume I'm a local XD)
Tonight is my last night and I couldn't leave the Balkans without eating The Grilled Meat, so I found a nice place and... ate the grilled meat XD
Tumblr media
Anyway that sauce on the spoon? It's called ajvar, it's made from peppers, eggplant and garlic and it's SO GOOD. I actually bought a jar to bring home XD

|| Old Muses || Not Accepting
@nurotoxin ASKED: alt! :o
Almost there. Do it you old useless bastard.
Rotten teeth gnawed at his arm, blunt fingers with loose fingernails scratched at his coat. He shoved them back and took aim, blasting the zombie’s face apart with the assault rifle, precious ammo wasted down it’s miserable gullet when another took it’s place so easily, so quickly.
Get to work. Get them out of there. Get them safe.
Tumblr media
He heard gunshots in the distance, several of the zombies before him shot by bullets from his group even at such a distance. He had no time to marvel at their tenacity, youthful vigor keeping their hands so still. They would be able to make it. He just needed to get to the damn generator.
It was within arms reach, and he used the momentum of his sprint to slam his full weight down on the button.
CRK. RKR. KRK. RKRKRKRKRK--
In the moment there was no time to consider how he would get back, much less have enough time to get on the bridge before it raised too far to climb to. His old, weary bones wouldn’t make it--
The force of the punch took him by surprise, but in his practice with these damn things he should’ve seen it coming. Two of them, as if one wasn’t enough to deal with when it was all four of them.
Tumblr media
“Hold yer horses,” He choked out, tasting blood as he slid down against the metal of the generator. “I’ll be with ya in a minute.”

Weekends are for watching truly trashy TV...
... (as opposed to irony-watching semi-trash) so this week I decided to forego my newest addiction Divya Drishti to binge the new AltBalaji show BOSS: Baap of Special Services.
Tumblr media
[crowd yelling: “... But TT you’re always going on about not caring for KSG! You’re adamant about it and battle anon wank on the topic! How could you possibly......?????”]
Well kids, all I can say is don’t try to put me in a box. For all my highfalutin media snobbery, there’s also that side of me which has watched KRK’s Deshdrohi multiple times. (Only to discover that one of my college-mates was an extra in the songs. True story, mummy kasam.) I honest-to-god have a favt. movie featuring Sonu Nigam as an "actor". No, not the cult classic Jaani Dushman, but the equally noteworthy Love In Nepal. Which I have also seen multiple times, because the amount of cheap kicks I get from Sonu's ridiculous hamming is indescribable. Anyway, I’m trash for the professional-couple-with-opposing-personalities trope (especially in the field of law enforcement), and was majorly missing B99 (HOW LONG TILL THE NEXT SEASON GODDAMNIT?????)/Krishna Arjun (WHY WON’T YOU JUST PUT IT UP ALREADY, HOTSTAR?????????) so I decided to scratch the itch with this. (Also this blasted weather has brought an influx of mutant mosquitoes into my house, so watching this was also an attempt to keep my mind off those literal itches. I'm not an NRI anymore, but my body hasn't gotten the memo yet and continues to overreact to every bug bite.)
Plot:
It was pretty much what I expected from the trailer; a middling crime/mystery series with occasional moments of the mildest intrigue. It has a ‘case of the episode’ format, with each resolution sorta feeding into the larger mystery driving the plot. The smaller cases are completely unremarkable; always a murder (I used to think Shimla was a chill place with relatively low crime rates? Apparently not; in this show's universe the murdering is so bad, a whole special task force has to be formed - with like, national-level shooting champions and imported super-cops from other states.) The bigger mystery is the only compelling part of the show, keeping me invested to watch till the end. I wouldn't say it had a completely satisfying wrap-up (a too-tidily ghusaaya hua culprit and motive in the end; not to mention loose ends that just went nowhere. For eg. they introduce - never show - a character that the lead has been obsessing about for months now and goes to great lengths to track down, only to be casually told that he died a few months ago. And like...... nothing. We just move on, zero frustration.) but at least it brought like 2.67% complexity to the main lead beyond “Satyromanic Sherlock”.
A more appropriate name for the show would have been BOSH: Baap of Sexual Harassment, coz KSG's character spends most of his screentime leering at the nearest adult woman and propositioning her with the most unimaginatively sexist innuendo. Said woman (other than our stern female lead, of course) is so bowled over that she’s immediately willing to get it on with him on closest stable surface that can support the weight of 2 people. Each episode has on an average of 2-3 utterly tacky and tasteless sex scenes which I promptly forwarded the fuck through. Everyone knows I'm a tharki of the first order, so you can guess just how distasteful they were to get ME to do that. (Does KSG have some kinda clause in his non primetime-TV contracts that he must be given scenes to paw at a woman in the most unattractive manner?) The reaction to all this nonsense is always smirky admiration from the other men, and disgust from female lead. Except for when he puts the moves on her in later eps; then she reacts with coy exasperation. I cannot (yet somehow also can - because we truly do live in the darkest timeline) believe something like this got made and released in the #MeToo era? Forget #MeToo, the leads more than once wake up with the people in bed next to them murdered, and it has like zero legal repercussions beyond a withering glare, so THAT's the kinda universe we're operating in.
Cast:
KSG‘s made 'charming haraami with/without heart of gold’ his go-to role over the years now, so this is right in his wheelhouse. I've seen him give a waaaay more compelling performance in QH so eh... Can't say I was too impressed with him here. This was just Law Enforcement Armaan. An errant man-child doing whatever the fuck he wants and getting by in life thanks to conventional attractiveness. His facial hair situation is also very distracting; the continuity lapses rivaling Iqra Aziz's hair in SC2.
I haven't watched Sagarika Ghatge in anything other than Chak De, so I'm genuinely wondering: is she capable of anything other than ‘sullen girl who's constantly making an annoyed/perplexed face’? Her face occasionally relaxes into a wry smirk, but other than that, she could be Captain Holt's Desi Spirit Daughter. I couldn't quite tell if it's the stereotypical role of ‘female cop who has to be a strict stickler to be taken seriously in a male-dominated profession’, or if she just doesn't have the range. Maybe it's both? It’s probably both.
Gaurav Gera shows up as a sidekick to KSG - some kinda "hacker" who regularly comes to school the police's cyber-crime head - because she's a woman, how could she possibly be the authority on tech stuff? Anything that keeps him from making more of those dumb "shopkeeper" vids is a good thing in my book, I guess. Sagarika's character has two sidekicks - who contribute nothing to the investigation part, they just serve as muscle who chase the fleeing suspects and haul them into the police van. Ayaz Khan toh I suspect just took the role to get to hang out with best bro KSG in Shimla for a few days, coz his character is an undistinctive personality-less blob. The sidekick cop who's not Ayaz (aforementioned shooting champion) looked super familiar; it took me like 3 episodes to realize it's the dude who plays Komolika's deranged brother in KZK these days. The insta clips of him constantly attacking one Sharma sister or another is where I knew him from. He plays his character with some bright-eyed earnestness and is mostly tolerable, if completely forgettable.
Minor bright spot(s): Mishal Raheja as a grey character! Now there's the charming haraami I'd want to watch a whole show about! Also Daljiet Kaur in a tiny but important role; kind of a chilling AU version of Anjali from IPK, if she didn't have Arnav in her life to balance out her constantly-teteering-on-the-brink waala mental instability.
Overall Impression:
Lol, I can't recommend it or anything, but if you miss watching the OG 1990s/2000s-era episodes of CID, but with a 400% more cringeyass sexual situations straight out of soft porn, I guess you can go for it? Pretty sure it's no more a waste of time than the newest Bhai movie that's released on Prime.

Have you three ever been in a haunted house before? Or like, met any slasher villains and stuff? Just wondering! (You guys are crazy awesome btw)
[ID: 23 images in greyscale and green.]
Tumblr media
[Image 1: Hare in profile, good eye closed and looking smug. Hare: Now, why would we bother going to a “haunted house”…]
Tumblr media
[Image 2: Hare in the dark, holding his hands up like grasping claws, illuminated from beneath and eye glowing spookily. There is a cartoony lightning bolt in the background with a ‘krk-koom’ sound effect. Hare: WHEN WE ALREADY LIVE IN ONE?]
Tumblr media
[Image 3: White lines on black background. First illustration is of several melting zombies. Second illustration is a group of ghosts zooming towards Pops’ silhouette. Final illustration is Becile Manor. Hare: You all know the story– how our Pops killed all those men. What you don’t know is that they HAUNTED him all the way back to the States– to this very house!]
Tumblr media
[Image 4: Background fades from black to white descending. At the bottom, Mr. Weed walking and smoking with his back to the viewer. A ghostly hand is reaching out for him. Hare: So now they roam these halls, preying on any poor sucker that walks by… ]
Tumblr media
[Image 5: Hare grabs Mr. Weed’s shoulders from behind. Weed is shocked and his cigarette goes flying. Hare: (all caps) Like you!!!]
Tumblr media
[Image 6: Mr. Weed, looking annoying toward offscreen, somehow holding his lost cigarette again. Hare has his elbow on Weed’s shoulder and is smirking at him. Weed: Y-You’re full of it. … He’s full of it, right?]
Tumblr media
[Image 7: The Skull in the foreground, scowling offscreen at Mr. Weed. In the background, past an open doorway, Locksmith leans against the wall with The Jack sitting next to him. The Skull: Of course he is. Ghosts don’t exist.]
Tumblr media
[Image 8: The camera reverses sides of the room. In the foreground, the side of Locksmith’s face as he observes the others. In the background, The Skull stands with his back to us as Hare smacks Mr. Weed on the back of the head and laughs. They are standing on a rug. Hare: HAHAHA! This guy’ll fall for anything! Mr. Weed: ow The Skull: Don’t give him a concussion.]
Tumblr media
[Image 9: In the foreground, the edge of Locksmith’s leg and his cane with his hand holding it. Behind him, The Jack looks unhappily downward. He is sitting crossed legged on the ground. Locksmith: Does that upset you, Jack? Talk of ghosts?]
Tumblr media
[Image 10: An angled bust of Locksmith with his hat tipped down over his eyes. He is grinning. Locksmith: We’ve discussed them before, you and I. The nightmares you have in stasis often gravitate towards such themes. Ghosts… Death… Terrible accidents…]
Tumblr media
[Image 11: The Jack in profile, still looking unhappy. The Jack: … Rocks.]
Tumblr media
[Image 12: Locksmith’s chest. He raises his left hand and presses the latch on his hatch through his coat. Locksmith: Tell me about the rocks.]
Tumblr media
[Image 13: The camera reverses to the other side of The Jack. He is still sitting, but now grinning nervously. Locksmith stands behind him, stepping forward. Jack: Hehe… heavy, big-big rocks… in the dark… they fall… and they c-crush…]
Tumblr media
[Image 14: Same shot. Locksmith is starting to kneel next to The Jack, putting his hand on The Jack’s head. The Jack is turning away nervously. Green light is glowing from Locksmith’s hatch and his green pupil is visible under the brim of his hat. He is still grinning. Locksmith: Do you remember the moment, Jack? When the rocks became too much to bear?]
Tumblr media
[Image 15: The Jack, looking downward, a trail of oil starting to run from under his bangs. Locksmith’s hand is still on his head. Green and black start to encroach from the top of the picture. Locksmith: When your body gave away, leaving a whisp of nothing behind?]
Tumblr media
[Image 16: Jack the Human, in place of The Jack. He is crying and looks terrified. The majority of the picture is green, as if coming from Locksmith’s hatch, with black around the edges. Locksmith’s hand is starting to grip Jack’s hair more tightly. Locksmith: Do you remember dying?]
Tumblr media
[Image 17: The image is “smashed” like a broken mirror. Some of the panes are glowing green, some are black, and some are white. Through them we see both Jack the Human and The Jack overlayed. He looks like he’s screaming, but the scattered text is laughter.]
Tumblr media
[Image 18: The Jack, no longer hallucinating, lunges away from the wall and Locksmith, leaking oil from his eyes. The perspective is stretched. Locksmith, still kneeling, watches him go silently. The Jack’s laughter is cut off by the frame of the image on both sides]
Tumblr media
[Image 19: The Jack tackles Hare from the side, knocking him off balance. The Skull and Mr. Weed look surprised. Hare: OOF! WATCH IT!!]
Tumblr media
[Image 20: Hare looks down at The Jack with concern, lifting a hand hesitantly. Mr. Weed, smoking again, looks on, slightly pityingly. The Jack leans his head against Hare and shudders. Hare: … Jacky? You ok, bud? Mr. Weed: Maybe your story scared him?The Jack: ha-*hic* haha zk-kk-hahaha]
Tumblr media
[Image 21: To the left, The Skull looks over his shoulder with a “/glance” at Locksmith. His hand closes into a fist as if in anger. Behind him, Mr. Weed folds his arms and watches as Hare cheerily puts his left hand on The Jack’s shoulder and grins down at him. The Jack is still shaking.Hare: Aww, is that all? C'mere, knucklehead.]
Tumblr media

Thought of a thing that im probably not going to do said renowned liar about an actually serious altercation that star and krk have early on in their rooming days
In which ss is looking for something that he knows krk was using earlier in the day but now can't find it or him so he's looking all over the common area of their dorm before he finally gives in and goes to krks room. He's a little weary going in without krk being there though because despite the fact thry didn't exactly get along first thry were still pretty respectful about eachothers own space but he needs the thing so he's gonna go in anyway.
Once ss is in there he starts looking around but something immediately catches his eye. It's a visor sitting on the table next to krks bed. It has a very light violet color to it and seems just a tad smaller than what he thinks aught to fit on krk. Despite his better judgment he goes over and picks it up so he can get a better look at.
It has a very thin almost hairline crack on the outer layer, but otherwise seems wearable enough. But it doesn't exactly match krk nor can he imagine krk ever having such a light color scheme to fit the visors colors.
Before he can do anything else he hears footsteps behind him and turns, visor still in hand, to see krk stop dead in his tracks at the door. His eyes are staring straight at the visor and he seems tense.
Ss addresses him nonchalantly talking about how he was looking for whatever before he came across the visor, and yknow he never really took krk for a visor type of guy- and krk cuts him off by punching him. There's a growl in his throat and anger in his eyes as the situation escalates before ss uses the hand holding the visor to swing at krk. Krk seems to freeze for a moment vefore he slams into ss and uses his momentum to rip the visor free of ss hands. Star falls over in the chaos and shoots back up to continue the fight but stops when he sees krk.
His armor is flared out and he's taken a defensive stance as he's backed in a corner of his room away from the door. He's holding the visor close to his spark in a protective manor, almost shielding it from stars view now.
Ss takes a step back at that and instead takes a deep breath and asks krk where the item he's looking for is. Krk is still weary about the whole thing, his eyes are darting around ss face as if looking for a lie before he finally straightens out a little in order to point towards his desk.
Ss keeps his eyes on krk as he reaches over and grabs what he needs and heads for the door. Before he fully makes it out krk shoves him the rest of the way telling him to stay out of people's things before slamming the door on him.
Ss doesn't see the visor again the rest of their stay in that dorm, nor do either of them bring it up.
It's clearly a sore point for krk and he neither wanted to be fighting the whole time over it nor did he want to ruin whatever it is they had towards the end of their stay by bringing it up.

dude that apple music interview has wild i teared up at the start with james saying that essentially he made music bc he didnt like where he was which same, i think that's such a good explanation for why i make art i crieeeedd and then the whole jason thing!! and kirk calling him a light in the band! omg and ofc the girlfriend comment sdlkasd (which he is right, it is a little creepy but also james, you broke all for your stans hearts :( insaneee also rob talking about his pov and the guys reacting to it, it was great and it also felt like a little therapy session
Yesssss!!
Someone that has seen the interview!!
Thank you for keeping me company in this night of vertigo and insomnia! ♥️
I absolutely did not expect such... idk depth from this interview? Reminiscence, yes. Fun facts, side stories etc but wow. Not this! More than a couple of rollercoaster.
-yeah, I totally get what you are saying about that part. I love how the 'standard' (but certainly true in most cases) rock and roll story about hunger/constance/blind commitment got redefined. Yes, you can call it 'drive', but the why was so strong was something v personal.
-when they brought up Jason in that way I was 'okay, here we go. The nth time of the self slapping wrists + 'it needed to happen' merry go around instead of talking what actually Jason gave to the band.... and it surprised me. I already !!!!! at some declarations, so I'm not gonna repeat myself but I really appreciated what Krk said, not focusing just on the 'ending'. (And there was that moment when James interrupted and said— that. And fuck. He had that tell. The tell that i recognize bc my therapist explained it to me and. Fuck. Yeah. I had to stop watching bc I am easily emotionally compromised djdjdjdjdj)
-it's so strange to hear what they say abt him vs what he says abt them. No one talks badly abt each other, just... what they choose to bring up, while describing the relationship. I have so many psy 101 cents opinions abt that fjdjdjd
-ROB. SJSJSISJSJ MR TRU, YOU MADE ME GIGGLE A LOT SIR. Oh, I wish the interviewer asked him more than 2 questions. And I didn't know those details (that I'm not gonna spoil, dont worry, duders)
-the girlfriend comment... I died of second hand embarrassment and I will say nothing more bc 1 it's not my business 2 I dont know ANYTHING abt their relationship 3 they are two adults.
-IT TOTALLY GAVE THE THERAPY VIBES AT ONE POINT????? With that soft introspective music in the trailer djdjdjdjdjdj
-THE END CUT SENT ME DJSJSJSJSJS

This is the first real jazz song I ever wrote (but I'm making music for 19 years, so that might've helped) and I'm really proud of it! I'm watching so many music youtubers at the moment and setting myself the challenge of releasing a song every week makes me directly use everything I learned...which is why this song is named after @its_adamneely since I learned so much music theory stuff from his videos (in an entertaining way!) and discovered some nice jazz artists. I also never played drums in my life so the drum solo was a challenge...it was kinda writing breakcore but not quite, because you are limited by the sounds you have at your disposal and have to work more with velocity. Also, this was just as much influenced by lo fi hip hop that samples jazz as the genre itself so...everything comes full circle? :D . . . . . #jazz #piano #jazzpiano #smoothjazz #adamneely #lofihiphop #lofifamily #klavier #music #lofi #musicproduction #krk #dreads #dreadlocks (hier: Hanover, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/BznQ1UagSnb/?igshid=map2mo9otowa

i went past the 30 image per post limit. lets keep going on this additional rb
October: krk. nothing spooky. a mix of bullshit lets just say. i remember Octovian was a thing, i drew SeeU once, CK and his "best friend" and Nami, which BTW i am renaming to "Nari"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
November: less school doodles. lets just say my teacher reached out to my parents and we went through an agreement that i stopped doing that. here’s a Tovi. two actually.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
December: busy month. the most busy and the most proudest. because of course i am. winter vacation existed. i used it. i like the CK one. it’s my PFP at the moment. i remember drawing a Kris when i was supposed to be studying for the test. or maybe that was CK? hard to tell. there’s also the Christmas thread. ah. the Christmas thread. my pride and joy as i watch my friends be happy with what i made for them. i cherish every one of your reactions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and now i have ran out of months. thank god. i didn’t draw as much as i remembered, seeing as i kinda didn’t. have a lot to display. wow, school really does take a tole. doesn’t help that i go to high school now. may or may not draw more but hey. i do know i’ll improve with time.
Seana’s 2021 art highlights (a thread)
(Note: this is a reupload of a thread i did on twitter a few years back. so these are really old.)
January: uh. nothing noteworthy. just a few refs here and there.... that i’ve been using for the entire year. eesh. i should update them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there’s also this thing i didn’t upload... i didn’t like how it looked, and scrapped the whole drawing for later concepts (my god it’s atrocious! mainly the coloring. sheesh.)
Tumblr media
February: Nothing much here either? there’s this and UGH it’s fuckin. ugly. this is also the only instance of me drawing Marr properly.
Tumblr media
this IS, however, the month i concentrated on making my Moldy plushie so... all is excused.
Tumblr media
March: gh. more refs. and another poor scenery art piece... remind me to draw more backgrounds. this was the month school started so i didn’t have time to properly draw. lots of sketches here and there though.
i realize this is also the month i made Charlie and Mia. does anyone remember Mia? i known everyone remember s Charlie.
[note: the reason for this comment is because i had asked every one of my friends to draw Charlie at some point (when they asked for art requests).... but never for Mia. the reasons for that are complicated.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
April: here is a Bo. i made flowerfolk a thing. more lore sketches. halfass’d sea. i need to draw more water. Lorem ipsum. blah. blah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
May: birth month. remember deactivating because of tests. Korean school whoopin my ass. nothing was fucking done! i drew Hollow Knight because i like Hollow Knight.
[i also watched Sword Art Online Abridged around that time. see if you can spot one of the jokes.]
Tumblr media
i drew ref art for my raffle winners but i’m not keen on resharing gift art.
[fun fact: i am now! see them in their greatly watermarked glory:]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
June: kurookoo. mushroom. nothing done, nothing done. i remember i had a time limit on my laptop everyday which is probably why i drew less on my laptop.
Tumblr media
there is, however, lots of sketches. some of my favorites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and some objectsona art. i did not draw him too often. i wonder why.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
July: ...uh? there is no art from July. i remember going on a trip that month. moving on.
August: started going to international school that month. i apologize for all these scribbles. we will be getting proper drawings very soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
September: i am free from this art block curse!! thanks Ekura.
Tumblr media
also some more sketches. Raz and Mwa inspired me to make some bug OCs.

#005-Pyra
Tumblr media
Pyra Singer
Based in Thailand
Genre:Dystopian Pop
Instagram:@onlypyra
Q: Can you describe the city where you live and based?
Bangkok, Thailand. This place is very diverse, and rich in culture but the political turmoil is bringing this country downhill.
Q: What kind of music is being popular right now where you’re based?
Hiphop & Korean inspired R&B
Q: What did prompt you to start playing music?
My mom sent me to vocal classes when I was 8 years old as an extracurricular activity. I later asked her to pay for my guitar & piano classes too.
Q: What kind of music are you creating now?
I'm making self-acclaimed "dystopian pop" music. It's, sonically, hyperpop but what keeps all the different genres in the project together is the dystopian message. I'm here to warn the world of the possibility of a dark future if we don't take action for change right at this very moment.
Tumblr media
Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Every of my experiences in life is my inspiration. However, my music talks about the things I cannot say to other people; either because it's too serious or too sensitive for the media. I'm like...Ok fine. If I can't express myself with words then I'm going to express myself in a form of music, arts, and fashiont then!
Q: Do you have any mentor? And why she or he is your mentor?
No. I wish I did though. Maybe I'll already accomplish my goals with the right mentor. However, what I'm doing is too different from other people in Asia. I'm more of a mentor to other people's mentor actually. A lot of the younger artist and friends come to me for advice. Borderline, mentor and therapist lol.
Q: Do you have any social issues that you pay attention to recently? And why?
All of my songs in my "fkn bad pt.1" EP are about social issues. It touches the topic of feminism, politics, capitalism, warfare and mental health. "fkn bad" is a big project with 2 more EPs on the way and it talks about all kinds of "inequalities" we're facing right now in the world. My life goal when I turn 40 is to be an activist so that I can really change the world on a larger scale. The music I'm making right now is paving my way there.
Q: What aspect of your personality haven’t been changed since your childhood?
I think it's the fact that I'm very "secluded" and "introverted". I like to do things by myself and prefer hanging out with a few friends. I'm very efficient when it comes to working or time. I feel like doing things alone increases the speed of that activity.
Q: Do you have any fashion brands that you like?
Iris van Herpen, Robert Wun, Y3, Versace, also Uniqlo. Uniqlo is the best at everyday wear.
Q: Any music genres that you are really into right now?
Hyperpop, avant-garde electronic, and also real life ambient sound--not listening to music.
Q: How/what equipment/gadgets do you use to listen to music? (earphone, headphone etc)
I mostly listen to music in the car when I drive. However, I really need to listen for details, I go on my KRK 8" monitors, Audio Technica noise-cancellation headphones, and even my Airpod. I really hate listening to music from bluetooth speakers. The speaker distorts the sound so much it sounds nothing like what the artist intended to create.
Q: Do you have any forthcoming release of music?
I've just dropped my newest EP called "fkn bad pt.1". Please check out all the music videos from my Youtube channel, especially "paper promises" which I directed & self-shot at home alone in quarantine. This year, I'll drop 3 more singles that will be packaged together as "fkn bad pt.2" so please subscribe to my Spotify and Youtube!
Q: Please tell me a reason for your 3 recommend tracks for ‘MOOD NOW’?
Sad Night Dynamite - Krunk Sad Night Dynamite is my favorite fresh find at this moment. I love digging for new artists on Spotify and they're the ones that stood out to me.
Awich, JP the Wavy, YZERR - GILA GILA I listen to so much Japanese music from pop to experimental and this is the best hip hop track for me at this very moment. There's so much power and energy to it. I believe what defines great artists among artists is the ability to convey their feelings through music (even in a foreign language we can't comprehend) they did it so brilliantly on this track. Asian hip hop is second to no one, really.
Sega Bodega, Lapsley - Make You Stay I love everything Sega Bodega produced. He's one of my favorite producers right now & this track is on repeat for me. And the special part is that it's a timeless track, not submitting to the trends. It'll have it's own place despite constantly moving time.

How To Build A Budget Music Studio At Home?
In this post we are going to talk about how to create a affordable music studio at Home at home in an economical way and that offers you all the services you may need.Currently, thanks to technology, we can produce our own music from home and at a very affordable cost. This guide will help you create your own home studio and get a quality in your musical projects that you can not imagine. We will recommend specific products with a good quality-price , but it must be made clear that it is only a recommendation. The ideal components for each affordable music studio at Home depend on many factors so you will then have to assess for yourself what is best for your projects.
Tumblr media
Acoustics
Let's start with some basic observations on the acoustics of the passenger compartment . The acoustics for a homemade affordable music studio at Home has nothing to do with a professional studio. We are not going to soundproof or condition the room perfectly, but we do have to take some recommendations into account. The soundproofing consists of preventing the sound we generate from reaching the outside and vice versa, which is why the environment where our room is located will depend to a great extent.Colocation-monitors-Musimaster For the preparation of our home-studio we will propose some tips  that you should take into account:
●       Do not place the monitors near walls or corners, causing a small mismatch in the low frequencies.
●       The tweeters have to be at the same height as your ears
●       The monitors have to form an equilateral triangle with your position to get a balanced stereo.
●       Avoid bare walls, windows, regular surfaces etc.. Using carpets, foam and elements that act as diffusers can help achieve better conditioning. Do not fall into the common mistake of lining your room with absorbent foam because it will create a space too dry and you will not get a good sound. The topic of using eggshells as part of the conditioning is a myth, the eggshells only reflect the sound, the material is not ideal to absorb sound waves.
Tumblr media
Furniture
The furniture you need is minimal, just a desk. The ideal is to put another homestudioshelf on the table to create two heights , this will facilitate the positioning of the monitors in their correct position and to be able to manipulate more easily all the accessories. Some of the peripherals for a home studio come in a certain format to install them in a rack , but it is not mandatory to install them in a rack so we can have it on the table.
Computer
The computer is the basic component of a home studio. It is where the other elements are going to be connected. We all have a computer at home, but it needs to be updated and have a certain power to perform audio tasks with ease and without stoppages. As minimum requirements we could propose the following:
●       Minimum operating system: Windows XP.
●       Minimum processor: Dual Core.
●       4GB of RAM at least.
●       Free memory on our hard drive, a few gigas.
●       Usb 3.0, is ideal for a higher transfer speed and greater synchronization, but the 2.0 is also valid.
Regarding software , there are many programs with different purposes. Later we will publish a post that will deal with this topic in depth.
Tumblr media
Monitors
The monitors are an essential element in a affordable music studio at Home, the ideal is to give a flat response , without glare, so we can make an objective and homogeneous mixture . This has an explanation, if we perform the mix with monitors with a fairly flat response, our product will be more homogeneous when we reproduce it on different devices . If we perform a mix with monitors that greatly enhance the bass, it is very possible that when we listen to it on another device it will be missing serious ones. All the monitors have nuances in different frequencies, here they influence the tastes and the needs of each one. It is necessary to have a pair of monitors to create a stereo in our home-studio.krk
We have two recommendations for listening:
●       The first are the Krk Rp5 G3 monitors , for an affordable price you will have a pair of monitors of great quality and with an exceptional design with its characteristic yellow cone. It is a highly recommended option for its value for money .
●       If for the moment you can not afford monitors you can go working with headphones, it is not ideal, but it can be a good solution in the absence of monitors. A good option is the reference headphones for studio Alesis SRP100 , they are closed headphones and with a good response , perfect for a home studio both for recording and mixing. Although we have monitors it is always good to have a headset to monitor in our home studio.
Midi keyboard
The Midi keyboard is optional, it can offer you numerous possibilities , but it is not an essential element. The keyboard itself does not emit any sound, but sends a series of Midi instructions that our software will interpret with the sound of the virtual instrument that we choose. For musical production is a highly recommended and will greatly help you in your musical creations.
Tumblr media
Our proposals:
●       The first is the Roland A49 Usb Controller Keyboard , available in black and white, is a 49-key keyboard ideal for beginners, offers all the features you may need.
●       The second option is the Roland A300PRO Usb Controller Keyboard , it is a keyboard of higher quality and features. It offers many possibilities when it comes to making your musical production projects.
Interface
The interface allows you to connect your computer with any sound source , allows you to capture the sound and send reference signals simultaneously. This peripheral is one of the causes that currently we can make high-level recordings in our own affordable music studio at Home. There are numerous interfaces, with different features, and as everything, according to our needs we will need one or the other. To begin with, an interface with two channels is sufficient, we can record two simultaneous tracks in different channels. We recommend the Alesis IO2 Express interface , it is an interface with a very good quality-price, perfect for your home study; It has two channels and can be used with most audio software.
Microphones
Depending on the projects you are going to make, you will be interested in one type of microphone or another. There are millions of microphones for different purposes but in a home home studio it is advisable, especially at the beginning, to have a microphone that is polyvalent , with a good response and  good features . A very versatile microphone is the AT2020 Audio Technica condenser cardiode microphone , this mic is perfect for a home studio, robust, reliable and with an extended frequency response. Accompanied by a mic stand, how the Memphis black giraffe, you will have a world of possibilities to record with a good quality. There are many microphones, you have to assess what you are going to work on and choose it according to the use you are going to give it. It is very advisable to have an antipop for our microphone, it is economical and the results are noticed when recording voices. The On Stage Asvab Pop Blocker antipop is a good choice.
Tumblr media
Other accessories
Once we have these components, we can improve our home-studio with different elements.
●       A level control for the monitors is a good purchase to improve the accessibility of the volume control . A very good option is the TC Electronic Level Pilot.
●       Equalizers and processors of physical effects are elements that you should take into account if you decide to improve your home-studio. Although you both have them virtually in audio softwares.
●       Many interfaces only have one output of headphones, if you are going to record two voices, for example, it is advisable to send the listeners separately and thus be able to have individual listeners . For this we would need a headphone amplifier like the Samson S-AMP , with independent volume control for four channels.
●       It is recommended to use balanced wiring to reduce noise and interference that may arise.
We hope that this guide will help you build your own home studio. And remember, first you must think what projects you are going to make, and depending on that, choose the components that best suit your needs and budge.

>U> “Come to bed” kiss for Imelda x Hector?
Winter Oceans and Other Songs: A Coco Fanfic
In Which Héctor Sings Nonsense, Listens to Imelda, Forgets Faces, and is in Debt for One Million Hugs
This is a bit of a mess and it became less of a kiss and more of a … thing… and I’m so sorry for that! This took longer than I expected because of school, and I wanted to make sure I got it out by tonight! BUT PLEASE ENJOY ANGSTY HÉCTOR AND HIS FAMILY! I HOPE YOU LIKE IT!
His daughter begs nightly for a song, and he gives her what she wants without questions. Silencing her queries with an attack of kisses that lead to giggles that lead to Imelda giving them both the look (one that has them bashfully shuffling up the stairs and conspiring out of her view) until he finally settles her under the covers and is kneeling by the bed.
“My song!” she slaps her tiny hands on the covers with a whump. “Canta mi canción, papá!“
He’s leaving again for a weeklong musical excursion with Ernesto who had, boldly and without much introduction, claimed that this would be it. The claim to their rightful pedestal.
Héctor had bags already packed. This had not been the first apparent claim to pedestals, and his feet were becoming weary from the travel.
Though it was hardly anything compared to the ache when he left- daughter clutching his legs- Imelda’s knowing eyes following him out
(is this the time you don’t come back- they say)
(never, he wants to promise, without quite knowing how)
But right then, his fans (his true fans) are eager and demanding, and he’s laughing at the foot of the little bronze bed. “¡Se paciente!” He’s twisting the knobs at the end of his guitar, trying to push the sides of his smile down. “You’ll get a song!”
“My song.”
“Your song” he promises, serious, like it’s a pact between the two of them.
(maybe it is).
He sings it. Sometimes he adds in little jokes that have her squealing and snorting. He lives for that sound, just as she lives for this.
“Bedtime,” he says afterward, propping his guitar on the wall.
“Papá, no!”
“Coco, yes!” he imitates.
She crawls under the covers but pauses to look up at him. She’s learning from Imelda, and he can’t wait to see what she looks like when she’s his wife’s age. He’s already predicting that she’ll be just as fierce. And brave.
People who loved music were always the bravest, he thought.
(They were the ones who let their hearts break the most)
“You’ll sing again tomorrow?”
“And the next day,” he swears. “But that won’t come if you don’t go to sleep.”
She points at him. “No sharing my song,” she warns. “Or else.”
“Or else what, Mija.”
“Un millón abrazos” she says, stretching her arms out wide. “Your arms will fall off from all the hugs.”
He nods, and crosses himself. “No sharing,” he promises. “Because you are so terribly intimidating and ’m so terribly afraid.”
Imelda meets him in the hall. “Come to bed,” she says, winding her fingers through his. “Ernesto gets you tomorrow, I get you tonight.”
Her eyes still ask when he’ll leave for good.
And so that night he lies in bed beside her and sings Imelda songs about love and moonshine and rum and women in loose dresses that dance to the beat of the winter ocean and hopes it’s enough.
Héctor hears the song later on the radio while he limps down luminescent streets surrounded by the skeletons of yesteryear. It’ll croon over the radio out of a bar, and he’ll pause long enough to listen.
If he’d had a heart, it would have leaped through his chest.
Betrayal cuts deep.
If she heard… if she heard and thought that he’d-
Ernesto’s sins, for all that there were, were left incomparable to this.
My song, he remembers, with copper beds and small hands.
Your song.
“Come to bed!” Imelda stands in front of his little work desk in the back of their house. “It’s after midnight, mi Amor. You can’t do this to yourself!”
“Ernesto needs new songs-”
“And I need a husband.”
He scratches out a word and looks up at her. She’s all fire in the dark. Their town had just gotten electricity, and the flickering of the bulb behind her illuminates the tresses of black inky hair. She’d always had hair as dark as a cello.
“Soon,” he promises.
“Now,” she demands. And the pencil is taken from his hand, and she’s slipping their hands together. “Come. Coco needs her father to be awake in the morning. If I remember, she was promised a galavant in the park.”
He groaned, remembering, and already dreading the wakeup he knows he’ll receive. He looks down at his music.
Ernesto would be so angry at him…
“Come to bed,” she says again. “And maybe I’ll distract the beast and give you an extra hour.”
He kisses her senseless at the top of the stairs.
(Ernesto can wait)
He sees Imelda when she first arrives, and she’s still got cello hair and a fire behind her. He remembers songs about winter oceans and love, and he approaches her with apologies sewn into his tongue.
(I’m sorry…)
(that I left)
(that I couldn’t return)
(that you never knew)
She turns him away. He didn’t expect anything less, just as he didn’t expect the hurt. “You left,” she hisses, eyes alight with fresh electricity. “Leave again, Héctor. You’re best at that.”
He does.
He remembers Ernesto stalking away from him out of the bar. “You want to leave early?”
“I have to get back to my wife, Ernesto. Coco’s sick and-“
“And there are doctors in Santa Cecilia, aren’t there?”
“Ernesto-“
“Aren’t there?”
Héctor pulls himself up straight. He’s not used to denying the broad man much, but he finds that it’s never been easier. “I’m going,” he says. “I’m leaving. Now.”
“Now.”
“The train leaves in fifteen minutes. My daughter needs her song-“
Ernesto scoffs loud enough that the patrons outside turn their heads. “Her song. That’s what this is about?”
Imelda had written him a letter, and it was folded up in his pocket. Their daughter had contracted something from the other children in the village. Something had spread round. Two toddlers had been laid to rest since and three more had received last rites.
She wants her song, the letter had ended. And Héctor hadn’t thought twice.
He wanted to cry. He wanted to press his hands into his eyes until he saw spots.
Instead, he barrels past Ernesto. “She needs her song and her Papá,” says Héctor.
“You’ll always choose her over this!” It’s not a question.
They both know it doesn’t need to be.
Héctor had gotten there by the time the danger had passed, and Imelda falls into his arms the moment he opens the door.
They cry. Together, on the little couch, they cry. In relief, maybe. In exhaustion.
“Don’t go,” she says.
“Never.”
“You know that’s not true.”
He kisses her knuckles and ignores the way the barb has settled. “Not now, Imelda. Not right now. Please.”
Coco will wake up to her Papá.
Imelda will go to sleep with her husband.
“Come to bed,” he’d whispered to the mother who needed her rest. And she’d fall asleep to the sound of him humming out the notes to a new song. One about life and sunshine and daughters and wives and garden walls covered in yellow roses.
Héctor begins to forget himself before he’s forgotten.
It’ll come in waves.
What did Coco look like? What did Imelda used to sound like before age took her voice? She sounded just as beautiful. Just as wonderful. But he wonders what his might have been if he’d matched her.
He forgets Coco’s bronze bed. And he forgets what the room smelled like (marigolds, maybe).
He’s stopped writing music, but he finds a notebook and scribbles, so quickly, what he can remember. Eye colors and hair colors and the way their kitchen always looked.
He needs to remember.
It’s all he has.
She’s crying in their bedroom, and he sits on the other side of the door and rests the back of his head against the sanded wood. “‘melda…”
She sniffs. Snorts. She’d always been an ugly, loud cryer. “Go away…”
“Please, ‘melda.”
“You’re leaving again.”
“Just for a little while.” He turns, twisting at the waist, and flinches when his back gives a soft krk. He’s only 21, and he feels the weight of a family on him. “I’ll be back soon.”
“That’s what you said last time.”
“And I came back.”
There’s silence. A sniffle. “Two months… The last time was two months. The time before that, a month. The first time you’d gone it was a weekend. They’re getting longer-“
“Imelda.”
“That leech has you attached.”
He bristled. “Ernesto’s doing his best.”
“Ernesto is a coward without a family of his own.”
“That’s not fair.”
(It is fair.)
(But he defends because…)
(Because…)
(He has no reason. Perhaps Ernesto just has that effect.)
“Imelda. Please. I promise. I’ll be back. I’m always back.”
There’s a long silence.
He hears a breath.
She opens the door then. Héctor moves fast before he can fall back, and turns to face her. Her eyes are red and puffed, and her lip swollen from biting. “I don’t want to sleep in an empty bed, Héctor.”
His shoulders drop. “I know.”
“I hate sleeping alone.”
“I know, ‘melda.”
“And raising Coco. Alone-“
“I’ll be back.”
She wraps her arms around herself, a poor substitute, and looks away. “I miss my husband. When you’re gone, Héctor- I sleep alone, I eat alone. I’m alone.”
He wants to tell her that he’s alone, too. That when he’s off with Ernesto, he’s so utterly, completely, and all-encompassingly alone.
“I’ll write,” he says. She sniffles. “Every day, I’ll write. Poetry. Songs. Letters that you can never show anyone because they’ll be completely inappropriate that they’ll make Sister Marguerite toss me out of la Iglesia for heresy.” She actually laughs then, a wet, soft laugh, and he smiles. He stands.
She leans forward, and her brow rests against his collarbone. Her hair smells like citrus groves and pork fat and marigolds. “Tonight. I have you tonight.” He nods. “Come to bed,” she says.
He complies. And that night, he’ll sing her a song of loose priests and naughty, ugly nuns named Juanita, and she’ll laugh too hard to remember that she’s crying herself to sleep.
He draws their likeness on the wall of his shanty.
He’d snagged a bit of chalk from Chicharrón and had drawn as best he could a little Imelda and a Coco. He’d never been exceptional at art, and it looks little more than stick figures. But they do well enough.
They’re placed beside his bed -a worn, eaten mattress- and says goodnight to them no matter what.
It’s a familiar ritual, and it keeps him grounded.
“Papá’s writing you a new song,” he promises to chalk Coco. “One day you’ll dance to it. I’m sure you’re old enough now to really dance with Papá, ey?”
She’d have been tall enough by then, he suspected.
And when he finally managed to cross the bridge (next time- it would be next time) he’d see if he could keep up with her.
Besides. Her song had been shared. And he intended on keeping true her threat of a million hugs. His arms would fall off safely now, at least. And he thought that she’d like that joke an awful lot.
He hoped she remembered.
And to Imelda: “Mi Amor,” he says. “Mi Vida.” And then, “Come to bed.”
Because that feels right. And natural.
And even if he’s going to bed alone, he hopes she can feel the gentle command and remember when she’d once given it to him.
It’ll be later, months later, when she’ll ask him about things she remembers. Things he’d forgotten.
(But not really)
(Not fully)
“You used to write me songs,” she said.
“I used to write you lots of songs. They’re the ones people are singing.” and then, more cheerfully, “at least now they know who wrote them, ey?”
She nods, smiles. “Yes,” she agrees, “but not those songs. The songs in our- my bed.”
“… your songs.”
“My songs,” she reaffirms. “They were always… nonsense.” The way she says the word, with a fondness, an aching, he can tell they were quite the opposite to her. “About things like oceans in winter and yellow roses.” She swallows and then says “nonsense” again.
Héctor remembers.
Slowly-
carefully-
wonderfully-
he remembers.
He just hadn’t thought she would.
“They were love songs,” he said. “For you. Only for you. Only for our bed.”
“They were nonsense.”
He doesn’t say that love, like music, is also nonsense and bravery and brokenness. Instead, he says, “you know… if you ever wanted me to sing them again…”
She says “nonsense” and walks away.
He didn’t miss the way her eyes had misted.
The chalk drawings are washed away in the next few years.
By the time Miguel arrives, Héctor has forgotten the likeness of his child. He hasn’t heard Imelda’s voice in years.
When Miguel suggests that he sings a song, though…
That he remembers.
“Not that song,” says Héctor.
“Why?”
My song.
Your song.
He pulls back on sepia and marigolds and bronze and (come to bed). “It’s too popular.”
My song, Coco sings triumphantly in his head.
He’d forgotten her voice, but not her words, and that is in itself a comfort.
It’ll be months before he’ll get to kiss her. And that’s all he wants.
He arrives each day, on time, guitar slung across his back. And the family (his family he supposes) greets him without so much as residual ire. Oscar and Felipe drag him this way and that, Julio already explaining his new shoe design, Victoria assessing him with cool eyes, and Rosita trying her best to feed him.
Imelda-
Imelda is cautious. He doesn’t blame her.
It’ll be months before he’ll get to kiss her. And that’s all he wants. He doesn’t expect more.
And yet
And yet
And yet
She invites him, slowly, back into her life. It’s a handhold during a late supper with the family, a knee against his at the workbench, a soft tug on the elbow. There’s more soft kisses against the backdrops of shoe shops.
He’s glad for the little things, and he takes them as they come with direction.
And then, one late evening after he’d overstayed his welcome, sitting in the back desk lost in thought writing a new song, she strides down the stairs, plucks the pencil from his hand and says “come to my bed.”
It’s still her bed. For a long while. She says “come to my bed,” and “won’t you join me in my bed, Héctor” and “take your feet off my bed, Héctor, that’s not where shoes belong.”
He learns that she still can’t sleep alone.
She learns that neither can he.
But here? It’s different.
There are pictures of his family everywhere. He remembers things. Sounds. Smells. He wipes hard at his eyes and she touches his shoulder. "Do you... do you think she-"
"She remembers," says Imelda.
He writes everything into a song, just in case, and he hums it against the darkness, back propped against pillows. Songs about doctors and yellow fever and trains and bedroom doors and women who danced to winter waves.
He tells Chicharrón that he’s never going to get them back. He doesn’t want to hope to. And yet, he does.
“Hope is a wicked thing,” Chicharrón had said, teething on an old, unlit cigar.
Héctor agreed. But he was a musician. His heart was fallty from the start. “I’ll never see her again. Coco, maybe, but Imelda-“
“Probably not,” Chicharrón finishes. He flicks his cigar away. He’d always had a penchant for honesty, and it cuts deep, but is honest enough that Héctor can lean back against it. Like bedroom doors and crying on the other side of them, they’re familiar and terrible all the same.
“Learn to sit in the feelings,” his elder advises. “You get used to them, after a while.”
“I just… I want-“
Chicharrón scoffs. “We all want things.” He sits up. “Now, you were talking about borrowing my mini van?”
Héctor is afraid.
He doesn’t know what anything is. And so he tries his best to walk around it all with caution.
He’s used to broken hearts.
He just doesn’t know how much more he can take.
It had been a month of staying with Imelda. Of sleeping board straight before wandering off to find somewhere else. He’s afraid of overstepping. He doesn’t want her to realize…
To come to her senses…
But Imelda had always been fire. And he’d always been ash beneath her. And it’ll be soon after, while he sits in the kitchen nursing a tequila, that she’s leaning over his shoulder, looking as nervous as he feels. “Héctor…” she says. She swallows. “Come to bed?”
“Your bed-“
“Ours,” says Imelda. She flinches. “Unless-“
He kisses her senseless at the top of the stairs. The nostalgia leaves him teary-eyed and tight-throated.
That night he can’t come up with any words for songs.
It’s fine though. Imelda pulls him under the covers and winds arms around him, and he’s breathless at the feeling of home; remembering what that felt like.
“___ ___ ___” whispers Imelda.
My song.
Your song.
Some things are too private to be crooned over radios.
Coco arrives by the time her parents are sharing their bed and he’s remembering how to sing about loose nuns and garden walls again. “Papá” she’ll scold, with amusement set deep in her eyes, “you shared my song.”
He pauses his crying enough to comply.
