Day one of fulfilling my orders to drive across covid America comes to a beautiful close as I was able to take a Chattanooga ghost tour, walking around the streets of this historic city. NOLA - Friday 19/04/2019

I have a 4 day weekend! And I’m spending it in NEW ORLEANS! And I’m not doing this trip alone!

I had to leave the house at 3.30 in the morning, but I didn’t care. I got to go on vacation to one of my top destinations on my American travel bucket list: New Orleans!

I arrived at our hostel around 8 am. Florence, my travel buddy, had already spent a night here. Florence and I met in college, 5 or 6 years ago. We had some classes together but never became friends back then, just normal classmates. A couple of months ago I noticed that she was studying in Los Angeles and that’s how we started talking again and ended up planning this trip together. If someone would have told us this 5 years ago, neither one of us would have believed where we would be in life and that we would go on vacation together. It’s funny how life can spin around.

We started our day with a ‘Free Tour by Foot’ around the French Quarter. We took off in Jackson Square and walked by numerous touristic must-see’s like Saint Louis Cathedral, Pirates Alley, Bourbon Street and many more. We learned a lot about the history of New Orleans and how it got it’s French influence. Before the tour, I told Florence I felt like the vibe around Jackson Square reminded me of Paris. I was not crazy!

For lunch we had our first New Orleans speciality: shrimp Poboy. Some kind of sandwich, look it up.

Next stop on our itinerary: the Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes & Culture. We walked through Bourbon Street to get there. What an amazing vibe! Street musicians everywhere, crowded but still somehow relaxing.

We also admired the typical New Orleans architecture. There’s an explanation why most buildings have balconies over here but I won’t spoil it. I’m in love with this!

The Mardi Gras Museum was not spectacular but we enjoyed it nevertheless. They have a room where you can try on costumes and accessories, fun guaranteed!

Afterwards, we walked around for a while before heading to our 5-in-1 Ghost & Mystery Tour of the French Quarter.

Unfortunately the person in charge sent us on the wrong tour. After a while we figured it out and decided to leave the tour since it was cold and we had to get up early the next day.

Wright Square, previously referred to as Hanging Square, was laid out in 1733 and it was the first white burial ground in Savannah, GA. At the southwest corner of the square, extending underneath some of the buildings, is where the bodies of those first buried in Savannah now rest. A common theme that you will find throughout Savannah is that buildings and roadways were often built on top of burial grounds. Haunted? 👻 Maybe. It sure is 🌺 beautiful though!

Many paranormal groups have checked out this particular establishment through the years and it is still popular today. The Shanley Hotel in Napanoch, NY, acquired its current name in 1905 when James Shanley acquired the property. It retains this name today although it was purchased in 2005 by Sal and Cindy Nicosia who immediately restored and decorated the crumbling hotel to its original beauty and reopened it for business. Shortly after reopening, paranormal experiences were reported in the building by guests. These activities included shadowy figures and feelings of strong presences, in addition to unexplained footsteps and voices when no one else was in or near the rooms. In recent years, as guests have ventured to stay at the Shanley Hotel there have been even more increased reports of paranormal activity. Strange occurrences like clocks chiming on the hour (when there are no chime clocks in the building), the smell of cigar smoke hanging in the air (but no one is smoking a cigar), feelings of being pushed by someone (as if someone is trying to get by), and people feeling disoriented and dizzy as if the floor is moving. These and many other paranormal activities continue to occur and attract people to the Shanley Hotel.
