SPOTLIGHT: 3D Printed Nail Animation By Hatsuki Furutan

Japanese nail artist Hatsuki Furutani and film production team +ring collaborated to make a stop motion animation that shows fingernails “transforming” into whimsical scenes and stories. 

An intensive and lengthy planning involved rendering a film using computerized software first, outlining the ways in which part of the nails would move and evolve.

Until today, I had never seen nail art that made my stomach clench and the hair on the back of my neck prickle in the way that photo and film and paintings have. Today I stumbled across Hatsuki Furutani's work and that changed. On her tumblr, she posts creations and works that inspired them. Corpse flowers in decadent, stinking red. Prone, gutted, feminine medical anatomy dolls. Deranged, psychedelic eyes from Bataille's story. Brightly colored balloons that lift little loner French schoolboys to fatal heights. Greasy tumors which resemble rippling ovarian cysts.

I have never seen anything like these before. I can't wait to see more.
