I see lots of guides like this for different elements of dress - &despite the good intentions, a lot of time they mix highly specific construction terms with general aesthetic/stylistic terminology to try to cover a breadth of styles that don't actually have consistent nomenclature among designers/sewists - but hats are a category where styles do have pretty much universal and consistent naming!

it's a little wild to me that 180 years ago, withinin only a few years, photography went from basically brand-spankin'-new to a saturation point where we have thousands of surviving portraits of everyday people (they were still relatively expensive in the 1840s dgmw, but way more accessible than a large scale painted portrait, even miniatures could be pricey). Here's just a sampling of more ladies from the 1840s 馃憞

this last one is Ada Lovelace(my beloved) around 1843 - this would have been around the time she was developing the concept of computer programing! like?!?!?! 5 years earlier and you had to get an artist to paint you and suddenly we have photos of actual historic figures we can contextualize into history!!!
