I am a big fan of parrots. They are some of the most intelligent dinosaurs, as well as some of the most beautiful - and they have some really weird and interesting types. So it was difficult to pick favorites for this week - and I’ve ended up picking two of them as it is! Anodorhynchus (Bill Without Teeth) is a genus of large and blue macaws that are mostly endangered, partially extinct. It doesn’t have much of a fossil record, but then again, parrots in general have a fairly scant fossil record. This genus lives in South America, and the best known species - H. hyacinthinus, the Hyacinth Macaw - is the longest known parrot in the world.

A. glaucus, the Glaucous Macaw, is a probably extinct species of this genus. It was about 70 cm long, and was turquoise-blue in color with a large grey head, and a large bill. It lived in northern Argentina, southern Paraguqy, portions of Bolivia, Northeast Uruguay, and Brazil. It was called guaa-obi in Guarani, a language of native Paraguayans, for its calls. In the 1800s it lost a lot of its habitat, as the yatay palm it fed on was cleared for agriculture, and many of the remaining palms were fed on by cattle. It also was a victim of extensive trapping. The species was last officially recorded in the 1870s, though rumors of the species persist.

The Hyacinth Macaw, A. hyacinthinus, is arguably the most famous species of the genus, and it is the largest macaw and largest flying parrot species known. It lives primarily in portions of Brazil and Bolivia, and is sadly vulnerable, due to habitat loss and the pet bird trade. It mainly eats nuts from native palms, using their strong beaks to eat the kernels of nuts and seeds. They can even crack coconuts with their beaks! They use dry, smooth tongues with a bone inside of them to tap into fruits as well. They travel over the Amazon to look for the best fruits and nuts to eat.

Very intelligent birds, they can use tools both in the wild and captivity. They can use chewed leaves and pieces of wood in order to feed on harder knuts, preventing them from slipping while gnawing on the food. They are calm macaws, nicknamed “gentle giants.” They nest between July and December, nesting in tree cavities, mostly of the Manduvi Tree. Competition for these holes are fierce, due to the relative lack of trees old enough to have holes of large enough size. The holes are then enlarged and filled with wood chips, and one or two eggs are laid, with only one usually surviving. The second egg, if laid, hatches later, and the smaller hatchling can’t compete with their older sibling for food. This occurs probably as an insurance policy - if the first egg is defective, the second egg ensures that young are produced. The female incubates the egg for a month while the male takes care of the female, and the chicks leave the nest after about 110 days. After that, they are dependent on the parents until they are six months old, and then mature and begin mating themselves until they’re seven. In the wild, they can live up to 50 years.

The Hyacinth Macaw is protected by law in both countries it is found in, and there are efforts to preserve the population of these birds. Breeding it in captivity is difficult, with high mortality rates in hand-reared macaws. International trade, therefore, of the bird is prohibited, and exporting it has been banned. Artificial nest and chick management techniques are in the works, and awareness among cattle ranchers has been increased enough that many don’t allow trappers on their land. Their range, population, and the extent of trading are all being researched, and ecotourism is being used to encourage donors. Individual birds are also being catalogued in order to track the population. High populations of the bird are in zoos and private homes, in addition, so survival of the species seems probable, as long as work continues to restore their habitats and nesting sites.

Lear’s Macaw, A. leari, is also called the Indigo Macaw, and looks very similar to the Hyacinth Macaw. However, ti has a different range, in more eastern portions of Brazil, and is much rarer and more endangered. It has a very long lifespan, of even longer than 50 years in the wild, despite its limited range. It has darker plumage without as much green tinge as the Hyacinth Macaw, It also has a different shaped patch of yellow near its bill. They live in groups and search for food and new nesting grounds together, with small groups of males scouting out the new land they explore into. They also can let out loud calls in the area when their is danger that can be heard for miles. They can even fly up to 35 miles per hour to escape predators and poachers.

These birds feed on Licuri Palm Nuts as well as other plants and flowers. They breed once a year, producing one or two eggs sometime from December to May, though they don’t reproduce every year. The juveniles reach sexual maturity after 2 to 4 years. They live near the Licuri Palm, which are primarily in sandstone cliff areas and more dry habitats than the rainforests of the Hyacinth Macaw. Their habitats were a mystery for many years, and only two colonies are known today. It uses saliva to soften the sandstone of its habitat, and then create crevasses in the rock to make nests. Estimates of the number of these birds vary wildly, and it is difficult to determine simply due to its rarity. It has suffered from hunting and trapping for trade, and conservation efforts are underway to preserve the sandstone cliffs and limit human destruction of this animal. It is only endangered, and it is estimated to have around 1000 individuals in the wild; which is better than previously, when it had been categorized as critically endangered.

The Green Wing Macaw - Shy Bird

If you’re thinking of getting the Green wing Macaw for a pet, then you should know all about the green wing macaw first. It is commonly known as the "Red-and-green Macaw". It is second in size to that of the Hyacinth Macaw. It has vivid red breast and the lower part of the feathers in the wing area are green.

Its glittering teal is surrounded by red feathers. Another physical description for this bird is that it has distinct red lines around the eyes which are formed by rows of small feathers. To name a few of their habitats, these are usually found in Venezuela, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, Guyana, Peru, French Guiana, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia. These macaws are mostly seen in mangrove swamps, savannas and tropical forests.

Talking about size, full sized Green-winged macaw lengths up to 90cm (35.5in) on average and with wingspans averaging approximately 102-122.5cm (41-49in). The weight may approximately land at 1250-1700g (43.8-59.5oz or 2.75-3.75lbs). Another interesting fact about this macaw is that it can live 60 years or longer which is up to 80 years.

The green wing macaw has a sensitive, affectionate and responsive disposition despite its characteristic as a shy bird. This bird is exceptionally interactive both with people and other parrots. They are normally seen in pairs or in groups of same family and they rarely gather in small flocks of six to twelve birds. In the wild, the breeding season for the green-winged macaw starts in October and November specifically in the southern part of their range.

The female normally lays three or four eggs and incubates the eggs for about 29days. About 95 days or three months after hatching, the chicks would then have their feathers and wing muscles ready for flight.

Can Soy Contribute To Bad Parrot Behavior?

Hello! I have a question concerning Indian Ringnecks. I have 2 males, ages 9 and 11, both rescues, each very unique, due somewhat to their reasons for rescue. I just read that soy might contribute to hormonal behavior. Agni, full flighted, gregarious, toy lover, loves soy beans. Eats them every day with fruit and other veggies. Should I cut him off in Spring time? Also, saw study of cockatoo drumming. Agni and Boingo are great drummers. Since they roost in the same room I sleep in, they will drum (test) to communicate with me. Once it thundered outside in the night and they "texted" me. I "texted" back that it was ok. This latter soybean has a thousand times the phytoestrogen content of regular soybeans. Dr Klasing has found no indication that even this high level has any effect whatsoever. His research subjects are finches, which have the highest metabolism rate and would show problems the soonest. His co-researchers have also set up flocks of finches for breeding, which starts at less than one year of age, and have not seen any effects on fertility, hatchability, chick maturation or illness. Harrison’s has been fed to the leading breeding facilities in the world for almost 30 years, and the egg-laying, hatching and survivability have always been excellent. In fact, Harrison’s was developed to solve breeding problems in hyacinth macaws (i.e., no eggs, infertile eggs, eggs that had to be incubated to hatch, weak hatchlings that needed assistance to hatch, rejection by parents so the chicks had to be hand fed). There was a 1970’s lawsuit in New Zealand claiming rosellas were maturing early due to being fed soy, and that some even died. The claimant had millions to spend on the case, whereas the new USA pellet manufacturer did not, and the case “appeared” to prove soy was the problem. It did not. Veterinarians familiar with the case said the birds were infected with one of the first cases of circovirus in rosellas. The manufacturer has continued to use his original formulas that have been used for over 30 years at the U of California cockatiel research flock without incident. The claimant has saturated the internet for these 30 years with the weakest of claims, all based on poor empirical observations. There is a failure by claimants to conclusively prove that feeding products that contain soy are unhealthy. And again, processed soy is a very different product from raw soy. The soy in Harrison’s Bird Foods is whole, organic, rolled and toasted.That is because our mentor was John Stoodley, who used whole organic soybeans in his famous formulas. John’s breeding results are unparalleled in seed-eating birds. He kept impeccable records. Most aviculturists do not. So there is no honest way to compare diets. Another exception is Eric Von Kooten, who has the only peer-reviewed comparison of traditional aviculture diets to Harrison’s. The study was on the members contributing to the Ruppel’s parrot stud book. His summary: “The conclusion is justified that the use of HBF (Harrison’s Bird Foods) is definitely worth the extra costs when compared to the use of traditional feed. Next to the benefits mentioned previously, such as a larger number of young birds, fewer dead birds, healthier birds, faster independence of young birds and fewer ill birds, other aspects have not been mentioned. Among others, the most important are that we experienced a major improvement in behavior since the introduction of HBF as well as a remarkable change in color of the feathers. They too have had some problems with mortality, early maturation of birds and suspicious deaths. The problem is increasing and information is urgently required concerning Soybean products. "PARROT SOCIETY NEW ZEALAND" ARTICLE, BY VALERIE JAMES (NOVEMBER 1996) In 1992 she was keeping and raising some of the native birds which she had been doing for some years on her own food formulas. However she started to use a commercially made food and her hobby suddenly became a nightmare when the chicks began to sicken and die. The food was promoted as scientifically developed and as such was not suspected initially. Autopsies of the dead birds indicated an immune system breakdown with the result of multiple organ failure and a lethal multiplication of the birds own benign bacteria. Survivors often had poor muscle control and matured prematurely, Some were also aggressive or displayed inappropriate sexual behaviour. a chemist carefully tested the food and found it contained a structure which was almost that of coumarin, a substance upon which most modern rodent baits are based. Coumarin was once allowed in small amounts in human food as an aromatic flavour enhancer but has long since been banned when it was shown to be cumulatively toxic when fed to animals. The three ingredients of the bird food were found to be Soy protein isolate (as in Soy infant formulas), Soy all and corn flour. There was no trace of this coumarin. However, it was discovered that there were three other plant structures similar to coumarin, all of which can occur in Soy. They are: 1) The fungal toxin zearalenone - - caused by poor storage or poor growing conditions. 2) Coumestrol, this being present in Soy sprouts and sometimes in the beans. 3) Insoflavones which are always associated with say protein. This occurs in very few other foods for human consumption although it does occur in beer causing the feminization of men who are heavy beer drinkers. Because of the similarity of their chemical structures zearalenone coumestrol and the isoflavones are phytoetrogens (that is estrogen derived from plants causing many of the symptoms noted in the birds). Further research was done and it was discovered that soy beans contain other toxins most of which are only partially reduced by modern processing and have shown in commercial products to cause ill health in animals. So the Soy content of the food especially the Soy isoflavones which are not significantly reduced by processing causes many problems for our animals and especially birds. Research up to this date by bird keepers that have withdrawn all Soy based products from their birds diet have shown the disappearance of the problem. However birds and their offspring's previously exposed to Soy had continuing problems into the third and fourth generations. CONCLUSION Many problems have been highlighted and recognised as being related to feeding soy based products to our birds. The above examples are only a few extracts of many related reports from many different sources. Although they are all very disturbing the Soy problems relating to the retarding effect on the reproduction/fertifity systems of birds is causing the most concern as it appears to be irreversible. It seems bizarre that so many bird products currently in use are Soybean based even though many of the effects have been known and reported for some time now. Wild life preservation programmes have also employed Soybean products and supplements for adult animals and birds as well as infant feeds for cats and parrots etc. It is established clearly that all soy foods contain toxic substances causing chronic poisoning and endocrine system disruption at very low levels, This effects all forms of life that we feed it to including our own infants. However, for our birds it is critical that something is done now as their are so many feeds on the market that rely on a Soy base.
