April Drabble Prompts: Discovery

Whoops, my hand slipped again. This one was a blast to write!

7. Discovery

“Really, it’s nothing,” Claire insisted with a smile. “It’s always a treat to hang out with Stu!”

“Still, it means a lot to an old woman like me. These old legs don’t move around like they used to, and the poor boy gets a little stir-crazy. He really is such a patient child.”

Claire looked at the young boy, who had already hurried off to the opposite side of the room, rummaging through a box of his toys. She couldn’t help but smile. “He’s a good kid.”

“Thanks again,” Ellen bowed her head politely.

“You’re very welcome.”

Claire turned to leave when she hit solid muscle, stumbling a bit.

“Pardon, young lady!” Saibara looked nearly as startled as she did. “Are you quite alright?”

“I’m fine. How about yourself?”

A raspy cackle emerged from his beard. “It’ll take more than a simple bump to knock me over. You have to remember I’m used to working around heavy things.”

Claire thought of the forge – the boxes of ores he was lifting from shelf to shelf, the hammer he swung when he was hard at work. She smiled and nodded.

“I’m surprised to see you here. It’s been quite a while,” Ellen called out, craning her neck to see past Claire in the doorway.

The old man smoothed his hair down and dusted off his clothes, a sheepish grin covering his features. “Ah, I just happened to be passing by and, uh… I thought it would be good to check in on you.”

Ellen smile remained warm as she looked over at him. “Why don’t you step inside, and we’ll have some hot tea, Sai?”

Claire watched curiously as Saibara’s face went red and he jammed his hands in his pockets. “I-I… uh… I’m afraid I can’t stay for long. I have… some groceries I need to pick up!” he practically yelled, whirling on his heel. “I-I’ll come by some other time.”

Ellen’s cheeks went rosy as she smoothed the blanket on her lap. “I’ll be waiting… Sai.”

Saibara had gone scarlet at this point, and Claire watched him hurry down the cobblestone street faster than she had ever seen before. Her eyes flicked back to Ellen, who looked calm as ever, except there was a special sparkle in her eye.

Oh. Interesting.

“Thanks again, Claire.”

She couldn’t help but wonder if her presence had thwarted Ellen’s plans. She watched Saibara’s retreating form. “I’ll be happy to watch Stu any time.”

The corners of Ellen’s lips curled upward. “I might have to take you up on that.”
