I'm playing Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley on 3DS and it's my first ever Harvest Moon. Will this stop feeling like a very small Minecraft anytime soon and are they all like this?
Because all I do is plant, water, gather, and terraform the nearby hill to pretty stairs. Which week do I get more?

Also I’m not criticising Stardew Valley at all - I love that game so much I bought it for PC, Switch and iPad lmao. Compared to FoM the characters are a little more flat but that’s all, otherwise Stardew is a fucking amazing Game.
I’ve played Harvest Moon DS the most followed by Animal Parade for the Wii and Tale of two towns for the 3DS and several others I don’t remember the names of right now 💀 but all in all my criticism goes towards the HM/SoS games post 2016ish I’d say and especially after 2020.
I just remember that huge feeling of disappointment when I started story of seasons a wonderful life and expected a nostalgic feeling and instead got hit with utter shock at how flat (and kinda ugly :| ) all the characters got. I adored Celia in DS, in sos wonderful life she just scared the shit out of me with the horrible design and deadness in her eyes.
And probably unpopular opinion but I don’t like the whole 3D Animating thing going on in the new games, the camera floating around 360 style and all. I loved my little 2D Pixel characters and still do. Celia my beloved…
It’s the same with cartoons, the 3D clayification of Heidi, Biene Maja and more. :(
If well done I ofc love 3D games like Bg3, the forest etc. haha
Also I scrolled a bit down your blog and am wondering if you’re German? Bc if yes, I could’ve done all those essays in german instead 😭
Lmao how did u know I speak German?! Jk, but I agree totally with what you said about friends of mineral town, I never played the og so I was really excited to play the remake and I couldn't even get past the first season of the first year, I got bored so quickly, I think it's because the map feels so claustrophobic again. Like, I'm not asking every farming game to be open world, but SDV did a fantastic job at having a town, a forest and a mining area and not make it feel like I'm stuck in some kind of cultist town where outsiders are not allowed and you can't leave.
I'm not totally against the 3D models, I really just adored trio of towns, the characters are 3D but you still get a cute 2D sprite of them, I found that was a perfect solution for HM games. I think I'm just really nostalgic about classic Disney animation, since I don't like the new modern 3D animation style either. I get it cheaper but it also lost its charme like that, such a shame. (But yes, we can agree on Biene Maja and Heide, keep KiKa shows 2D for the love of god!)
I'm kinda worried if they ever decide to remake Animal Parade (my beloved), that they'll fuck it up like they did with wonderful life, I'd rather they just don't touch it and the game can live on as a pleasant memory from the past.
SDV is obviously an amazing game overall, I'm not hating on it either, it was one of the best modern farming games I've played, it's literally become the standard for farming games (for better or for worse).
But since I don't think we'll ever get that magical, whimsical feeling from HM/SOS ever again, I think FoM might just become a classic in that genre. Of course the game is in ea but I have hopes and dreams 🫶

This list also includes updates for digital only games, such as the Nintendo Badge Arcade, a game that will both be unobtainable and unplayable (legally) after March. (I may update this list to reflect these games later, but don’t count on it). This also includes updates for games like Animal Crossing
The listed requirements were generally taken from the eshop, (although I did have to take a couple of entries from the Data Management section of my 3DS). This is relevant because the listed requirements on the eshop are generally 1 to 3 blocks higher than their actual size. For example, according to the eshop the Shovel Knight update requires 1378 blocks of storage, but according to the Data Management section of System Settings it only takes up 1376 blocks.
If you are reading this before March 27th and are looking for other eshop exclusives to obtain, this video has some good recommendations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXWz3cSGFe8 . There’s plenty of freeware, but you can also add money to your 3DS account by linking it to a My Nintendo Account and using the shop menu in your Account Settings. You can also add funds via your Switch account (if it’s linked to My Nintendo) or by searching games on Nintendo’s website and buying them there.
Linking 3DS to My Nintendo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJJUstNDl8Y
#long post#art#3ds#eshop#This doesn't include free DLC that requires you to play the game in order to obtain it#If we're lucky I'll be able to create a list like this for Japanese New 3DS's#(forgive the links; I did not know how to add custom hyperlinks)

for context. and some farm game lore. the video game series Bokujō Monogatari (lit. “Ranch Story”), published by Marvelous Entertainment, known commonly as “Harvest Moon” to a point and the pioneer of the farming sim genre, began in 1996 with an entry on the SNES. In 1997, Natsume Inc. localised this game for English-speaking players.
From 1997 to 2012, Natsume Inc. localised the Bokujō Monogatari series (relatively poorly, depending on who you ask) developed by Marvelous Entertainment — from that first SNES entry to the first 3DS entry, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning. After ANB, Marvelous turned to its in-house localisation team, XSEED (who localised one prior game in this genre — 2008 spinoff Rune Factory Frontier — and were also in charge of 2012 release and 2013 localisation Rune Factory 4). The first game in this XSEED-translated Bokujō Monogatari, was revealed as an XSEED project in 2014 and was released in 2015. This was a very divisive reveal (I distinctly remember the runner of longterm walkthrough website Fogu describing this announcement by saying “Harvest Moon is dead,” “the Harvest Goddess is crying,” and saying Rune Factory fans were attacking her for telling her this was a very mean way to respond to the news.) Anyways.
Because Natsume still had the rights to the name “Harvest Moon,” XSEED began to use the name “Story of Seasons” for their localisations — the first game they localised was thus simply called “Story of Seasons” (Japanese game title: “Bokujō Monogatari: Tsunagaru Shin Tenchi” / “Ranch Story: To The New World”) to introduce the title. This is the Bokumono context. Here’s the rest.
Still holding onto the name “Harvest Moon,” but no longer privy to the games because Marvelous giveth and Marvelous taketh away, Natsume Inc. began making their own farming sims. Late 2014 saw the release of 3DS title “Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley,” which kickstarted things. They have not once acknowledged the series split (something that the SOS team HAS done) and have treated the games from Harvest Moon (1996) to A New Beginning as theirs.
Last year was the 25th anniversary of Bokujō Monogatari; this year is the 25th anniversary of when it first started getting localised. Natsume is celebrating that and using “Harvest Moon’s 25th” to advertise their next game (which is coming out in the same block of time as the next Story of Seasons game, Summer 2023) without batting an eye and purposely refusing to acknowledge anything because it has and continues to trick people who enjoyed the games but aren’t aware of the series split and it is Really Pissing Me Off they’re using games they did not develop and did a pretty shit job localising in the long run as part of their advertisement when, looking at the games they actually DID develop, their series hasn’t even reached a decade.
Merry Christmas Eve to those who celebrate and happy Saturday to those who don’t I just remembered natsume inc marketing their new shitty harvest moon as “for the series’ 25th anniversary” and got so unbelievably mad about farming sims i had to go open a Pepsi to calm down
#their localisations are infamously riddled with errors typos and glitches up to even spelling their own name wrong#bri.txt#sorry this ended up being really long but I love bokumono dearly and natsume’s shady marketing practices infuriate me

It's kinda sad to know a good handful of people who've played Stardew Valley haven't played (or heard of) Harvest Moon. Maybe it's just a generational thing, but whenever I've gotten my friends into SDV, I always ask if they know Harvest Moon first. Literally always no.
ANYWAYS if you like Stardew Valley, please check out the Story Of Seasons line (the new name for Harvest Moon games), the Harvest Moon games before DS, or Harvest Moon A New Beginning (3DS)
OR if you like the fighting in SDV as well as the farming bits, I've heard the Rune Factory series is pretty good :D
#azzy grows#there was only one friend that knew harvest moon. but i knew he played hm so thats why i reccomended sdv#everyone else didnt know. i had to compare it to animal crossing (this was before the 2.0 acnh update)#its not really like animal crossing but its all i had to go off of :/#the ppl i introduced sdv to really liked it tho!!! :)#im actually. not sure how good most of the harvest moon games are.#i have the tale of two towns (3ds) which i think is pretty good (but it was also my 1st hm game)#i used to have the lost valley which. i would not reccomend to anyone.#and i borrowed another from a friend but i forget which one it was. it was for the ds and i had a horse.#stardew valley#harvest moon#story of seasons

so i want to get harvest moon bc it seems fun and easy, but idk which one to get. im looking for something that has comprehensible tutorials and is generally just fun and easy- similar to animal crossing new leaf. i bought the original, but i couldnt figure out what to do lmao, so i want a more recent version. ive never played any other version, but its been likened to animal crossing which is my FAVORITE. my options are a new beginning, the tale of two towns, the lost valley, and skytree village.

Can you tell me why you like Harvest Moon? I want to know if I should get it
well the one i’m playing currently is save the homeland and i like it for the same reasons i like stardew valley: it’s relaxing (i love virtual farming), you get to romance characters, you can hunt for rare items and overall it’s very cute. also you can get a dog. and a lot of what you accomplish takes work and time and i love the payoff! idk if it still is but save the homeland was free on ps4 when i got it, if it isn’t i’m sure it’s cheap since it’s old. i haven’t tried that new one yet but i do wanna get it. also the one for 3ds is fun too but i lost my copy :(

Harvest Moon/Rune Factory/Story of Seasons Games I Own - The Complete List
I’ve been playing the Harvest Moon (now known as Story of Seasons) game series for most of my life. I was actually playing it back as far as 2000 as a matter of fact! At the time, however, I was only six years old and just spent my time throwing logs into the river because I liked the little “bloop!” noise they made when I did so.
Over the years I’ve amassed a HUGE collection of titles from the series (as well as a few from the Natsume version of Harvest Moon, though I consider the XSEED Story of Seasons to be the true spiritual successor). What follows is a list of all the ones I currently own:
Harvest Moon (SNES) - Digital E-Shop copy on the Wii
Harvest Moon (GB) - Digital E-Shop copy on the 3DS
Harvest Moon 2 (GBC) - See above
Harvest Moon 3 (GBC) - See above
Back to Nature/Back to Nature for Girl (English - Playstation 1) - Digital E-shop copy on Playstation Vita
Innocent Life (PS2) - See above
A Wonderful Life (GC) - Physical copy, able to be played on Wii
Another Wonderful Life (GC) - See above
Magical Melody (GC) - See above
Hero of Leaf Valley (PSP) - Digital E-Shop copy on Playstation Vita
Harvest Moon DS/DS Cute (DS) - Physical copy
Rune Factory 1/2/3 (DS) - See above
Puzzle de Harvest Moon (DS) - See above
Island of Happiness (DS) - See above
Frantic Farming (DS) - See above
Sunshine Islands (DS) - See above
Grand Bazaar (DS) - See above
Tale of Two Towns (DS) - See above
Tree of Tranquility (Wii) - See above
Animal Parade (Wii) - See above
Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny (Wii) - See above
Rune Factory: Frontier (Wii) - See above
A New Beginning (3DS) - Digital E-Shop copy
Story of Seasons (3DS) - Physical copy
The Lost Valley (3DS) - See above
Trio of Towns (3DS) - Digital E-Shop copy
Skytree Village (3DS) - Physical copy
Rune Factory 4 (3DS) - See above
Light of Hope (Switch) - See above
This game series has brought me so much enjoyment over the years! I’m eagerly awaiting the U.S. localization of the newest Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town remake!

I’ve been kinda in the mood to play harvest moon but the only one I have is the gameboy one I bought on the 3ds eshop and I didn’t really like it, like my all time favorite one so far as been one I played on ps1 because besides the farming you could go into town or explore the woods or watch tv and they have events like horse races, does any of the newer ones have all of that? Like I saw there’s a few old ps2 ones I could get on ps4 and there’s a BUNCH on 3ds, idk which is the best to get though, the one on 3ds called the lost valley looked cute and was also the cheapest
(But fyi I won’t be able to get one for a long time cause I’m poor and I already decided the next expensive-ish game I’m getting is kotor on my phone but I still need harvest moon info)

The more I play Stardew Valley, the more I discover things that I don't like about it... I know I shouldn't, but I keep comparing it to Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons 😣 Kinda miss my 3DS now...
Still, I will see it through to the end (restore the Community center, discover all secrets, get married and have a child with Sebby 💕😆). I never got to the marriage part in any HM /SoS game (cause I suddenly got busy midgame and I lost my flow) so this will be the first time XD

I have a 3ds xl and use to play Harvest Moon: the lost valley all the time. I loved that game and got so far, I was romancing this guy and girlbossing. But my parents took my 3ds and wouldn’t let me charge. I couldn’t save the game 😭
I wish I could get that magic back but I couldn’t get into it again
