Hey, my name is Kit (she/they), and I'm an (aro?)ace nonbinary lesbian who sometimes does art, sometimes has somewhat original thoughts and sometimes draws.

Main fandom is Doctor Who, but I sometimes post Leverage, Good Omens, and whatever the hyperfixation demands stuff. I'll also reblog mutuals and collect posts like little corvids collecting shiny things.

Project complete! Toilet paper holder thingie, with faux aged wood. I'm pleased with the results! The design was based on a bunch of similar builds I found on Pinterest (see my board: stuffbymike). ✏️📐I sketched out a simple design for this and all my cuts/measurements were correct and assembled as planned, so I'm quite pleased with that victory. I experimented with a loopy pattern for the top half and used my jig saw with a scroll cut blade for the first time. By the third board I was feeling confident and keeping well to the original pattern. 🎨🖌️ I used a brown gel stain for the first layer - wasn't a huge fan. I much prefer the ease of water based stain and the penetration would be a bonus due to the abrasive part of the aging. The paint is just cheap Home Hardware brand latex white flat paint. I tried a 'dry brush' technique that was fun and got the desired result with ease. Next time I want to do an aqua blue stain and see if colour pops more than brown. ⌛ To age the wood I used a wire brush set I got on sale at Canadian Tire; the kind used for rust removal. The shank fits in a drill and you can get some interesting scuffs. To AGE I found using the narrow side of a circular wire brush head with the grain worked well; to scuff up I used the wife side of the brush with the grain. After painting a light coat of the latex paint and letting it fully dry I used a straight wire hand brush I got in the bargain bin and scrapped with the grain. 🔨 Hammer and nailed everything together. I had to tap in the bottom board under the rack (precise cut!) and there's one nail miss that I gave up on and decided adds to the rustic flavour #happylittleaccidents. I used the scrap parts of the jigsaw cuts I made in the 1x6 boards to make the roll holder parts. That was the one part I didn't plan beforehand and it's a bit sloppy, but totally functional. I'll use a spray epoxy to finish it (waiting for the next paycheque but got impatient and hung it anyway).
