Isaacwhy

He first saw the horror game on his steam front store page and decided to buy it.

When you asked him if he was going to beat if first try, he just laughed. Not a yes or a no.

As soon as he got into the game, Isaac got eerily quiet. He was normally a pretty loud person when it came to playing games, but this was your first time seeing him play horror.

When he died, Isaac let out a high-pitched yelp like a little girl. The tension in him released and he finally let out a laugh and explained just how scared he had gotten.

You offered to help play it for him when he was getting tired, which he promptly said no. He was getting focused into the game.

He finished it at an average pace, with a fair share of deaths during the run. He gave you a big grin and hugged you really hard when he won, feeling accomplished.

He posted a tweet about beating the game and took a picture of you next to the win screen. All in all, successful day.

Softwilly

You showed Nick a tweet about how hard a brand new horror game was, and that was that. He had already bought the game and installed it before you were done talking.

When you asked him if he thought he could beat it, he looked at you like you were insane. "Of course I'm gonna beat it. It's gonna be easy," he said.

He died really quickly, almost at the first point in the game in which you can die. He got pretty mad.

You gave him some consolation kisses but he was determined to beat the rest of the game flawlessly. You bet him $5 he wouldn't.

It took less then fifteen minutes for you to get your $5. He raged pretty hard, but he swore that he'd beat the game in less than five deaths.

He finished the game with just under ten, but he was pretty confident with how he did. By the next day, he was playing the game again.

Every time he improved in an area, he'd show you really proud of what he did. You gave him loads of encouragement.

BigT / Tanner

He first saw the game on a livestream of one of his friends and motioned you over to his desk. He asked you if he should play it, and you told him sure.

You nudged him and asked if he'd beat it first try. He very jokingly responded that he would do it easily, boasting his skills.

It took him a little while to die, but then after that he let down his guard and died a bunch. It turned into an unserious laugh fest with the two of you.

Every time he would make a really bad mistake and die, the two of you would bust out laughing.

Tanner took videos of the experience and posted a few to his Instagram story, but it was way funnier in the moment.

By the time he had beaten the game, it was four in the morning. The two of you cheered and celebrated, to your roommates' dismay. Oh well.

The rest of the week, the game became an inside joke and you'd end up laughing your heads off whenever it was mentioned.

Yumi

You were actually on his computer scrolling through steam when a game popped up that you found interesting. Blake was on the bed.

You called him over and had him give his opinion, and he was super into the idea of watching you get scared at a game.

Thus, you ended up getting this game and installing it. He gave you words of encouragement as you booted it up, but you were scared out of your mind.

It didn't take long for you to die and give up on the game entirely. Blake liked horror, so he was happy to step in for you.

He died way less than you expected him to. He would point out things he did to outsmart the enemies but also kept focused on the game.

When he won, he celebrated and took a picture of the two of you together, putting it on his story with the caption "just beat this game ama"

When asked about it on his stream, he said, "Oh, that? Yeah, it was pretty tough. Had Y/N at my side though, so we're chillin'. Can't have a bad time there."

Larry Croft

You and Larry were hanging out on his bed together when he saw a game on his timeline and showed you his phone.

He got up to buy the game and install it, and you stood up and sat into the chair you had next to his to watch him play games.

He decided to stream the game with you at his side, and you were more than happy to be there.

He was pretty bad, all things considered. He died way too often and in places he knew how to beat. But you were his sidekick.

When he'd get too scared or during cutscenes, Larry would reach down and hold your hand under the desk, getting close to you.

You called Isaac into the room, who became Larry's hype man in the background of the stream.

Soon enough, the whole group house had piled into Larry's room to egg him on and backseat his stream.

When he finally did beat the game, the celebration was massive and Tanner ordered pizza for the whole house.

After the stream, in bed, Larry told you, "That was really fun, but scary as shit. Thanks for being my support system."

Grunk

Grunk had been sent the horror game to play by a friend, likely Isaac. He shrugged and told you to join him.

As soon as he got in the game, Grunk told you he was going to beat the game flawlessly, with no deaths. You grinned and nodded, not believing him at all.

He kept the streak up for an impressive amount of time, over halfway through the game. It went straight to his head, and he was bragging about how well he understood the game.

When he finally did die, Grunk's ego was shattered. He looked crushed and he slid down in his chair, defeated. It took over five minutes to get him to even try again.

When he did try again, he failed over and over. It took him hours to finish the game.

As soon as he won, it was like all the disappointment left him and he jumped around his room cheering about how good he was. You laughed and celebrated him.

The next day, he would make a lot of small comments like, "That game was really tough! I did great though, didn't I?"

It was kind of annoying, but you gave him lots of encouragement and would agree with him.

ANYWAYS. Teachers. They have so much influence -- I've had teachers who inspired me and made me want to be better, and teachers who made me vow to never take that subject ever again from anyone. Teaching someone can be such a gift, such a sense of intimacy and vulnerabillity and trust, a unique bond.

Writerly Questionnaire

About You

When did you start writing? I’ve been writing since I could hold a pen, quite frankly! As a toddler, I’d draw doodles then scrawl zig zags beneath to represent the “words” of the illustrated story. They became real words as I learned to read. I was never found without a notebook.

Are the genres/themes you enjoy reading different from the ones you write? I read a lot of stuff I don’t think I could ever actually write. My all-time favorite author is Cormac McCarthy, followed by Jane Austen and Jack London. Larry McMurtry is becoming a fast favorite. My stories tend to require less lived experience. I am not well traveled or thoroughly educated, so, while I’m happy to do research, I most often write stuff that requires less expertise. I also write more about gay cowboys than any of the authors named above — at least as far as is publicly known.

Is there an author (or just a fellow writer!) you want to emulate, or one to whom you’re often compared? I have been compared to Chuck Palahniuk, which is enormously flattering (if not deserved!) It’s massively important to me to have my own style/voice, so I don’t want to write like anyone but me… but I would love one day to harness even a modicum of McCarthy’s talent.

Can you tell me a little about your writing space(s)? (Room, coffee shop, desk, etc.) At a desk or coffee shop. The stars must align just so, my mood must be just so, I must have creative juices flowing and absolutely no distractions or particularly strong feelings. (I end up not writing anything more often than not.)

What’s your most effective way to muster up some muse? I wish I knew. Inspiration hits me light a lightning bolt once in a blue moon. Other than that, maladaptive daydreaming watching head movies. Music is an excellent source of muse.

Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and places you write about? Absolutely. In a way that reminds me a bit of Donald Ray Pollock, who writes about a pretty bleak and raunchy Appalachia.

Are there any recurring themes in your writing, and if so, do they surprise you at all? Loneliness, self-loathing, self sabotage, addiction in many forms, mental illness, abuse, and suicidal ideation/thoughts/attempts, “taboo” romances (usually sexuality vs time period). Some of these come as a slight surprise; others are no surprise at all.

Your Characters

Would you please tell me about your current favorite character? (Current WIP, past WIP, never used, etc.) It’s Shiloh. I have no idea why. He’s been my favorite since 2018 or 2019. He’s weird as hell but writing him comes effortlessly.

Which of your characters do you think you’d be friends with in real life? Preferably none. They’re kinda awful. In all seriousness, maybe Lou? He’s chill and makes a good listener.

Which of your characters would you dislike the most if you met them? Ruck. We have nothing in common, would have nothing to talk about, and his poor decisions would stress me out. He’s one of my favorite characters I’ve ever written, but I would hate to actually know him.

Tell me about the process of coming up with of one, all, or any of your characters. Just about every one of my favorites started out as a side character meant to garner very little attention. Somehow or another, they demanded to be written — demanded I let their personalities shine. And lo, here they are.

Do you notice any recurring themes/traits among your characters? Mentally ill lonesome addicts.

How do you picture them? (As real people you imagined, as models/actors who exist in real life, as imaginary artwork, as artwork you made or commissioned, anime style, etc.) As real people! Often I’ll pick a model/actor as a template, but they always evolve into a slightly varied appearance from that person in my imagination.

Your Writing

What’s your reason for writing? It feels so compulsory there’s no other option but to write.

Is there a specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating coming from your readers? I like when people tell me what they felt when they read my writing. Whether it’s attachment or hatred aimed at a character, or nostalgia, or just feeling like they were there when the scene took place. Anything that shows they absorbed and enjoyed it feels like the hugest compliment.

How do you want to be thought of by those who read your work? (For example: as a literary genius, or as a writer who “gets” the human condition; as a talented worldbuilder, as a role model, etc.) I want people to think, this bitch loves words. She loves writing. She is a writer.

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer? Making people feel endeared to the characters. Realistic dialogue. Getting inside a character’s head.

What have you been frequently told your greatest writing strength is by others? Pacing & setting description. Which is awesome, but I always feel like these things are weaknesses of mine? I’m always iffy about them - pacing in particular. I have no idea how to do it, but I’ve been told I do it well. That said, there are definitely things -I- think I do well that get the most negative feedback/criticism.

How do you feel about your own writing? (Answer in whatever way you interpret this question.) Writing is the only thing I feel I do relatively well. I’m certainly not the world’s best, and I don’t think I’m really ready to be published or anything like that - but I am pretty proud of it. It’s the only thing I feel this way about. I want to show it to people. I wanna talk about it. I love to read what I wrote. It feels gross to say that, but I’m making myself say it anyway, lmfao. I love to see other people feel this way vs anxious or self conscious about their writing.

If you were the last person on earth and knew your writing would never be read by another human, would you still write? Yeah, for sure. I don’t know if I’d write as much fiction, because part of the fun is talking with others about it. But I’d still journal, and I would still imagine stories in my mind.

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely what you enjoy? If it’s a mix of the two, which holds the most influence? I hate this question, wtf Davy. It’s a slight mix. I’ll admit a part of me wants validation from others, but a larger part would rather write what she wants to write than turn it into a chore. Doing something just to entertain others is definitely a chore. My writing is heavily self-indulgent and I think it may suffer a little from that - but it also means when people enjoy it, they enjoy it more. I think it’s the same for any writer who does it this way. When I belonged to a huge online critique group, I edited the life out of a novel I was working on and made it less enjoyable to its biggest fans while trying to net a larger audience. I now know that was a huge mistake, because having a tiny group of people who eat your shit up is way better than having a ton of people read it, approve of it, but ultimately forget it existed because it wasn’t memorable.

The Birthday

It’s my birthday, so that inspired me to write this mini fic about Lawrence’s 1st birthday post jigsaw trap.

“You’re always at work, Lawrence.” Alison yells, slamming the oven door shut as she takes the perfectly cooked cake out. “You never spend any time with the family! You never bother to take any time off.”

“I’m sorry, Ali.” Lawrence laments. “They need me in.”

“You won’t even stay at your own birthday party! I spent weeks planning this, I invited all your friends, your family from out of state, and you’re just leaving to go to work.” She shouts despite the fact that the guests in the living room would be able to hear them. “Is nothing important enough for you to stay at home?”

Lawrence wakes to what smells like… burnt food.

Adam must be attempting to cook again, a quick glance to his right confirms this; the still warm but vacant spot beside him.

The curiosity of what Adam’s attempting to make this time, and the yearning he feels to have his partner beside him again is what drives Lawrence to leave the warm comfort of his bed, to attach his prosthetic and make his way into the kitchen.

This is where he finds both Adam and Diana, dropped off by Alison as it’s his weekend to have her, a messy kitchen and a stack of burnt looking pancakes.

Lawrence watches them fondly for the moment. Diana’s standing on top of a stool at the kitchen counter as Adam helps her pour batter into a cake tin and place it into the oven. The air smells sweet with sugar, almost as sweet as the sight before him.

Lawrence’s only able to take in the precious sight for a moment longer, as Adam loads up Lawrence’s lap tray with the plate of pancakes and a fresh cup of coffee, before Diana spots him at the kitchen door.

“Daddy!” She yells at him. “You’re ruining the surprise!”

Lawrence chuckles as he takes a couple of steps into the kitchen, now that he’s been caught, Diana’s becoming more and more like him every day, he's both proud and terrified of it. “Well, good morning to you too.”

Diana groans, wiping her cake batter covered hands onto her pretty pink apron. “You were supposed to stay in bed!”

Adam laughs at the back and forth as he digs around the cutlery drawer for a knife and fork to set onto the tray beside the plated up pancakes. “We were gonna bring you breakfast in bed.” He explains. “For your birthday.”

“Yeah! And I made the pancakes and the birthday cake all by myself.” Diana proclaims loudly.

“Wow, that’s amazing, angel.” Lawrence exclaims, smiling proudly at her. “Did Adam help you?”

“I’ve been demoted to kitchen assistant, Larry.” Adam faux pouts. “I read the ingredients, cooked the pancakes and put the cake in the oven.”

“Still.” Lawrence muses. “It’s an important role.”

A slight blush graces Adam’s cheeks as he picks up the lap tray. “Well, looks like breakfast in bed will have to become breakfast in your chair.”

As he passes Lawrence to take the breakfast into the living room, Adam presses a kiss to Lawrence’s lips. “Happy birthday, Lar.”

“Thank you, love.” Lawrence replies. “Are you coming Di?”

Diana suddenly gasps and shakes her head as he gets down off her stool. “Wait! I gotta get something.”

Lawrence chuckles as she runs off to her bedroom, following Adam into the living room not a moment later and sitting down in his favourite armchair. Adam places the tray into Lawrence’s lap, the pancakes are a little burnt, which explains the smell he’d gotten a whiff of when he’d woken up, but Lawrence appreciates the gesture all the same.

“Sorry if they’re burnt.” Adam shrugs, flustering.

“They’re perfect.” Lawrence says as he takes a bite, and they are perfect; burnt, with too much sugar, but made with love.

It’s then that Diana rushes back into the room, a poorly wrapped gift in hand, it’s clear she’d wrapped the present herself. “I got you this, daddy!”

“Aww, thank you, sweetheart.” Lawrence coos. “I’ll open after breakfast, yeah?”

Diana nods excitedly. “Can I have pancakes now, Adam?”

Adam hums in affirmation. “I’ll make them now.”

Suddenly the chiming of Lawrence's phone goes off, from in the bedroom where he’d left it, it’s a text alert.

“Must be a ‘happy birthday’ message.” Lawrence assumes. “Would you mind getting my phone, love?”

Adam nods and leaves the living room to grab Lawrence’s phone from in the bedroom, he comes back mere moments later with a more serious look on his face.

“It’s work…”

Diana groans. “Just like last year.” She mutters to herself.

Adam passes Lawrence his phone, as expected it’s a text from his boss asking if he’s available to come in today.

As he ponders the text, Lawrence thinks of all he’s missed out on before because of work: birthdays, Christmases and milestones. Constantly disappointing those around him, his daughter, his ex-wife and now… Adam.

As much as Lawrence hates to admit it his stroke with the Jigsaw killer and death has changed him for the better, he no longer wants to be that workaholic he once was, leaving his family behind at the drop of a hat for work, so instead he sends a simple reply back to his boss:

‘Sorry, I’ve got plans today, as I had booked the day off with HR several weeks ago now, you’ll have to find someone else.’

And with that Lawrence drops his phone onto the table, staring up at Adam as he grins back over at him, Diana hopping excitedly out the corner of his eye.

“I guess they’ll just have to find someone else for today.”

Song Fest is back!

For round one, we had some lovely fics based on songs from One Direction’s extensive track list.

For round two, we’re going past One Direction and beyond—the sky is the limit!

It is estimated that there are over 200 million songs in the world, so the possibilities for fics are endless!

Rules

What are the restrictions on which songs can be picked?

The song must have lyrics. Instrumentals are pretty, but we want fics based on the words of a song!

A recording of the song must exist somewhere online. Now what do we mean by “a recording”? Basically just a link that will allow someone to listen to the song. This could be Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, TikTok, anything, as long as it links back to an audio of the song.

The song does not have to be officially released or professionally recorded. There are plenty of awesome songs out there that never made it to air, but they’re still inspirational! These are allowed as long as there is a recording of it!

The song does not have to be full length. There are a lot of indie artists on TikTok who have teased a quick thirty seconds of a song. If that thirty seconds inspired you, you can use it as the basis for a fic.

One Direction’s and the boys’ solo songs are also allowed.

What will prompts look like?

When prompt submissions open, you can submit songs along with a specific prompt, or you can just submit a song by itself. For example, prompts may look like this:

Based off of the song Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran - Louis is older and has grown apart from his four best friends from childhood into his early twenties. He finds himself reminiscing on the good times, and he decides he wants to track them down and see if he can organize a reunion.

A Larry fic based off of the song Paper Rings by Taylor Swift where Harry is the song’s narrator.

A fic based off the song Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes.

You can be as creative as you would like when coming up with prompts and writing fics. You can follow the song very closely or just use part of it for inspiration. As long as the relationship to the song can be identified, you can come up with whatever you’d like!

You can write any pairing or even no pairing as long as the fic contains at least one of the five boys—Harry, Louis, Liam, Niall, and/or Zayn. Girl Direction, smut, omegaverse, polyamory, and trans characters are all allowed if you wish!

This fest is for people 18+ only. The fics will not be moderated, and any content is allowed to be written as long as it is appropriately tagged on AO3.

There is no minimum or maximum word count requirement. You can write multiple fics, but please make sure you can handle the extra load. Co-writing fics is also allowed.

Your fic title does not need to include the song title or lyrics that inspired you, but it can if you want it to!

Having your fic betaed is preferred but not required.

Heyhey! I don’t know if you follow any f1 gossip but if you do what do u think about Landos rumored gf and would u stop writing for him if they r together?

hmm do i want to touch this? lol

so i fell down a bit of a rabbit hole the other night after talking to mar about some of the vile comments i’d seen on instagram and honestly, my conclusion is that it seems way more far fetched that they’re in some top secret pr relationship than if they’re just casually seeing each other and spending time together when they can. seeing people convinced that they’re plotting some evil scheme is giving larry vibes and i’m not here for it.

it also feels like people are riding her pretty hard for things she’s done in the past which if it’s all true, fair enough not liking her but at the end of the day, we don’t personally know her and leaving vindictive and nasty messages is just immature. its pretty easy to differentiate between the younger and older fans for the most part - the elaborate theories with the pr stuff, like her never getting on that private jet is… out there but on the flip side, there have been some really well put explanations about the pr theory on tumblr that is food for thought (jamminvroomvroom & their anons) but instagram is a hellhole lol

and it’s totally fine if peeps want to roll through life thinking everything is a lie and people are evil but i would rather just assume they’re vibing for real and hope he’s happy. that’s my opinion with all of information available so don’t come for me pls.

as for writing - it doesn’t really change anything for me. fanfiction is escapism and maybe it stunts my inspiration to write a little bit when a subject is in a new relationship but it’s not a big deal 💖

These words and realizing this in general is so touching. They truly all have each other as siblings (Tomlinsons) and partners (HL) and they all are really powerful as people. I don’t want to sound sobby but really, as Louis helped H to grow up & glow up into the man he is now, H helped Louis to overcome these losses and stand on his feet as a solo and world touring artist. It’s really so special and yet only us know as strangers know about it 😭.

As I would love to witness their marriage as a royal couple and trust me, I would be in London too for the livestream in Hyde Park and celebrating their love with all larries from the whole world, I would also love if one day there will be document about them and books about their love and fairytales inspired by them. They really are the greatest love story.

Well for me I started off just being a simple reader :D

I got inspired to write one day shortly after hazbin hotel came out and I used to only write for that basically just for fun, thinking people would think it’s garbage and that I would only have a small “fanbase” which of course I would be endlessly greatful for 💓

I continued discovering new fanoms like school bud graveyard and when ESC 2024 came around which I was looking forward to the whole year I started writing for Joost Klein, one of my top favourites of this year ( justice for aiko tho she should have made it to the finals :( )

I didn’t really do much to grow my account, I just wrote what came to mind and wrote for the things (fandoms) I enjoy!!

If I were to give any tips I’d say fine yourself and your style of writing, don’t be afraid to take inspirstion (not steal!!) and don’t let yourself get demotivated because you won’t get that many likes and followers from the start. It will come soon enough, your hard work will be payed of and even if you have a smaller fandom be happy for that small community because they are the ones that appreciate you the most! I think loosing interest in a fandom as well you liked so much and wrote for endlessly is okay too! It’s normal to loose interest in things and you can always come back to it when you feel like it<33

If you have grammar issues I reccomend using autocorrect or google things you’re not sure about. It will help I swear, the autocorrect will correct you many times and it will make you remember to not make that same mistake after some time :)) I am not a native english speaker and thought writing and reading would better my vocabulary which honestly did wonders haha which I reccommend doing as well, especially the reading part

Make sure to make your page look nice, make a rules post where you talk about people you write for, what you write for, what you wont write for.. if you get a request you are uncomfortable with just delete it, you don’t need to explain to people why you don’t feel like writing it but of course, you can still do that. Also put a bunch of tags relating to what you wrote about to help people find your post and put warnings somewhere at the start of your post if there is anything triggerring to people

Overall, be yourself! Just because someone has more followers and likes, don’t think just because they have all of that you NEED to change your writing style or anything else you might think is “not good enough.” Hope this helped you in some way and hope your little “journey” of writing will go as well as it can !!

1. How many works do you have on A03?

Technically 10, but 5 of them are part of the Ace Attorney Holiday Exchange and won't be on my profile for a bit over a week.

2. What's your total A03 word count?

126,004 - which is insane if taking into account that I only started posting my own work in July this year...

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Mainly Ace Attorney, but there is also one lonely Metroid translation.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Since I don't have all that many comments yet, I reply to them all, because they always make my day. Also I know from a readers pov, that there's nothing greater than an author replying to a comment. So I try my best.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

That has to be The many lives of Larry Butz. It is for the Kill-a-character-Bingo after all and is so far the only one with an unhappy ending. Even though the personification of Death makes it a bit humorous.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

That I cannot say yet, but if I don't forget, I'll add it in a few days once the creators for the exchange are revealed.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Thankfully not so far.

9. Do you write smut?

Yes. Most of the time it's porn with a lot of plot. Because that's what I also prefer to read. Just a regular (good) story, where the sex is also narrated and not fading to black.

10. Do you write crossovers?

I write a lot of AUs, no downright crossovers so far. You maybe could count The many lives of Larry Butz as a crossover, since the Death there is heavily inspired by the Discworld Death, but since it is the AA universe, it's not really the same Death, even if he talks in all caps as well.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope, but I translated my favourite Metroid fic into German. Sadly I never finished, because I was bitten by the Ace Attorney bug and didn't have any braincells left for Metroid. But there are still quite a few chapters for part 2 sitting on my computer, so maybe, if we get a new metroid game, I'll be inspired to finish it.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, A King's Heart is a collaboration with @voidify333.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

It's the wrong question really, but the ship that I'm writing most for right now is of course Narumitsu/Mistunaru.

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Uh... so far I am hoping to finish all my WIPs. At least all wips that are already partly posted to AO3. There may be some sitting on my computer, that will never see the light of day though.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Hm... I'm good at every day fluff. Little everyday scenes where the characters enjoy life and each other. Funnily enough I am also good at getting my characters into awful situations, provided I know that they will resolve themselves and have a happy or at least hopeful ending after all the drama.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Writing a villain's pov. I tried. I gave up. I can write a villain, but only from the pov of other characters.

I also struggle with getting a coherent story together, if I don't have a good concept for the whole thing from the start.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

No problem, as long as it's German. :D Thankfully that's actually helpful in Ace Attorney.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

First fandom I actually wrote something down for is probably Metroid. The first work that I told stories for is probably Sir Walter Scotts Ivanhoe, when I was a little kid. I've told stories since I learnt to talk, I only very recently started to have the confidence to write them down and share them.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

Since I cannot yet tell you about that one fluffy fic yet, I'll have to go with Beyond Duty.

Sorry, Waldo, but folks won’t ask for your whereabouts this time around.

In Robert Saucedo’s horror-comedy graphic novel Where Wolf, a lycanthrope is racking up quite the body count in College Station, prompting journalist Larry Chaney to track it down. The hunt also provides Chaney relief from the occupational “ennui” he’s experiencing. His search soon puts him in touch with the local furry community, where the part-man, part-canis lupus assailant has gone to blend in—and to feast.

A real life furry emailed Saucedo when the first chapter (of the 12 in his book) went live as a webcomic on the horror publication Fangoria. This furry reader asked if his inclusion of that subculture stemmed from hatred. 

The reaction had him recalling when he was the features editor of the Battalion, Texas A&M University’s student newspaper: “I assigned a story to one of the reporters about the local furry population. That was one of the most controversial stories in the paper—we had hate mail coming in for months!”

He countered the assumption by sending a link to Where Wolf’s first four chapters and earned an admirer who would also give him self-created fan art and that from others. He added, “I never thought I would get erotic fan art of something I wrote, but I’ll take it!”

The graphic novel is Saucedo’s first—and a self-financed—leap into the world of sequential art, one that also features illustrations and coloring from Debora Lancianese plus lettering from former Marvel staffer Jack Morelli.

To the latter, Saucedo has captured lightning in a bottle. Over email, he wrote that “The body language and facial expressions are flawless, as is the storytelling, all moving seamlessly from horror to humor to pathos to gore and back again.”

Saucedo, a Port Arthur native who has spent time in McAllen, Bryan/College Station, and now lives in Houston, said three figures served as inspirations for Where Wolf’s Larry Chaney: the protagonist and the actor playing him in the 1941 film The Wolf Man, the namesake of Gregory Mcdonald’s Fletch series, and the author’s own experience. 

Indeed, Saucedo worked for a Bryan–College Station Eagle as a reporter for about a year until dissatisfaction reared its head. He wasn’t confident enough in his writing. The switch to copy editing also didn’t work out. He added, “Larry is kind of like an avatar of where I thought I might be, professionally and emotionally, had I stayed in journalism, which is, to say, also not happy.”

His initial vision for the project was, in fact, a tribute to the journalism profession. 

“When Larry finds out that there’s a werewolf attacking the town,” Saucedo said, “he sees this as a big chance to get all the fame and glory he has been chasing his entire life. That’s where I was at in my life—I spent most of my 20s and 30s chasing that ‘fame and glory’ before realizing you kind of have to work for what you want to get.”

Saucedo found plenty of time to work on Where Wolf in 2020 when COVID hit and the Alamo Drafthouse, where he had programmed films, furloughed him. He applied the “a chapter a day” mantra and finished a full draft in less than two weeks. At this stage, his work was an online novel. (“No one was reading it—I could see the traffic on my website”). He briefly considered turning it into a podcast, but plans were scrapped after he realized he would need a sound editor (and an industry pro he met quoted him $10,000).

A graphic novel, then, became the best medium for Where Wolf.  He could invest in artists and nourish his love for cinema. 

“Having watched as many movies as I have, you kind of think in a very cinematic way when you’re trying to tell a story,” Saucedo said. “The rule of thumb I basically had when I talked to Deb was, ‘Even if you take out all the dialogue, the page still needs to look funny.’”
