If you had to pick one film that was your favorite from each unit of your Queer Cinema Syllabus, which ones would they be and why?
The Queer Cinema Syllabus grew out of a conversation that @shortpplfedup and I were having about what queer works I would show to a prospective BL fan, which eventually led to the creation of @the-conversation-pod. Captain Hands here has decided to run the gauntlet and has reached Unit 2.
Unit 1: Coming of Age Post-Moonlight
Tumblr media
It's definitely Pariah (2011). This movie and Moonlight (2016) are having a complex conversation about Blackness and Queerness that feels so resonant to me. It's so rare that we see lesbians of any sort treated with this much complexity and sympathy in a contemporary setting. The complex web of lesbian interactions here isn't matched that often, and the only other movie that comes to mind it The Watermelon Woman (1996).
Unit 2: Race, Disability, and Class
Tumblr media
Probably The Way He Looks (2014) because it's an easy layup to introduce folks to the genre. The intersection between Leo's blindness and his queerness gives the newer person multiple things to think about and forces them to consider how queer people are more than just their queerness. I also feel warmly about this film because it was a project we followed all the way from short film to movie, and I love that we were able to get the entire cast back.
Unit 3: Faith and Religion
Tumblr media
You haven't gotten here, but this is where things start to get especially heavy. I think for this section I'm going with The Wise Kids (2011) because I really like the way Stephen Cone approaches the struggle with faith queer and non-queer people have in evangelical spaces. There's an honesty that I really admire. This is not an easy film, but it's lingered with me for over a decade.
Unit 4: Heartbreak Alley
Tumblr media
This is the section of straight losses. I don't know that I ever want to watch it again, but I would probably select Bent (1997) as my favorite because the idea that we could still love even in the greatest of horrors spoke to me. I also think the performances in this adaptation are phenomenal.
Unit 5: Lesbians
Tumblr media
I think we just passed Lesbian Visibility Day, so happy birthday, lesbians! This is actually a difficult selection because there are so many great films in this section. I think, today, I'm giving it to The Handmaiden (2016), but I almost chose Bound (1996).
Unit 6: Gems
Tumblr media
I don't even need to look to know Big Eden (2000) is in this section. This section whips ass all around, but Big Eden is my favorite because there's just so much love all over this movie, and every new fact I learn about the BTS of it makes me love it more. Arye Gross and Eric Shweig did not have to go as hard as they did in this movie. The director left that choice to them a veteran actors and they did that 23 years ago. Nothing but admiration and respect. This is one of my most beloved films.
Unit 7: Asian Film Warm-up
Tumblr media
This is a difficult selection because I think it depends on my mood, but for now, I'll go with The Stranger by the Shore (2020). This is a very Japanese take on second-chance romance. I like the way Japan approaches the quiet internalized homophobia that grips us. Some of the same things in Minato's Laundromat can be found here. It's also gorgeous and approaches sex in a frank way that I really loved.
Unit 8: Yaoi
Tumblr media
Once again I don't even need to look to know that it's Yuri!!! On Ice (2016). This show is so goddamn gay. I know people feel like it was censored because of the kiss, but these two proposed to each other. It's what sports anime wishes it could be with the open queerness on display from so many characters. It's beautiful and so much fun.
Unit 9: Boys Love
Tumblr media
I will not be selecting a favorite BL, but I will say that I really love The Boy Foretold by the Stars (2020) and it's a movie. I loved that we had a femme lead for once and that they explored what faith meant for femmes. It's a film that took the romantic lead's gay awakening very seriously and explored what being together might look like in a sequel called Love Beneath the Stars.
I'm looking forward to you completing the syllabus!

Pride Month~ Day 2: Lesbianism
⊹⊱•••《 ✮ 》•••⊰⊹
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first letter in ‘LGBTQIA+’ but also the most underrepresented and mislabeled. Lesbian.
Lesbianism, which was first coined in 1870, then in 1890 in a medical dictionary, refers to woman being attracted to other woman. Or as the ‘WLW’ (woman loving woman, woman in love with another woman, woman love other woman) states, anyone OTHER than a man, loving a woman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First flag— the current flag is known as the universal Lesbian flag. Any and all use it.
The second is known as the femme or lipstick lesbian flag. Mainly the femme lesbian flag, directed towards feminine presenting lesbians.
Both can be used !! Just be respectful <3
⊹⊱•••《 ✮ 》•••⊰⊹
We also see the term ‘sapphic’ being used a lot in this context.
Sapphic: Sapphism is an umbrella term for any woman attracted to women or in a relationship with another woman.
The flag !
Tumblr media
There are some terminologies used to describe lesbians, as it ranges.
Butch, Femme, Masc, etc. Some find the term ‘Lipstick Lesbian’ offensive, whilst others embrace it. The key here is to be respectful!! As all lesbians, regardless of how they choose to fill their mold, are valid.
All lesbians are valid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
⊹⊱•••《 ✮ 》•••⊰⊹
What is Comphet?
Comphet, also known as Compulsory Heterosexuality, refers to the societal expectation and assumption that everyone is heterosexual, and the pressure to conform to this norm.
This concept suggests that people, particularly women, may experience or act on heterosexual attraction due to social conditioning rather than genuine desire.
Summarized Version:
🩷 Compulsory heterosexuality is the societal pressure on women to partner with men through influences like religion, marriage, and media, regardless of their true sexual orientation or desires.
🩷 "Being comphet" means experiencing pressure to appear straight or to be in relationships with the opposite sex despite having little or no genuine attraction to them.
Why is this Important?
🩷 Authentic Identity: It helps lesbians recognize and validate their true sexual orientation, free from societal pressures to conform to heterosexual norms.
🩷 Mental Health: Awareness of comphet can reduce internalized homophobia and the mental health issues that arise from denying or repressing one's true identity.
🩷 Empowerment: Acknowledging comphet enables lesbians to challenge societal expectations, fostering a sense of empowerment and promoting visibility and acceptance of diverse sexual orientations.
⊹⊱•••《 ✮ 》•••⊰⊹
Fun Fact: Anne Lister is considered to be the first ‘modern lesbian’ within the New English Industrial Revolution.
Tumblr media
⊹⊱•••《 ✮ 》•••⊰⊹
Diabolik Lovers HC!!
I’d like to think that Yui is a closeted lesbian, who happens to suffer from comphet due to her harsh and rather strict upbringing from the church.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She perhaps had a crush on a girl, maybe a few years older than her or her age, but was killed off from the church after others assumed she was a witch or a deviant for liking women.
⊹⊱•••《 ✮ 》•••⊰⊹

Hello every and happy Bisexual Visibility Day! I thought I'd share the background story of how this day for the bisexual community started as not very many bisexuals know much about the three bi activists who are responsible for this ever growing time for our community.
You can thank Gigi Raven Wilbur, Michael Page and Wendy Curry for this milestone in the movement. There are plenty of milestones that celebrate heterosexuality, and in recent years, victories for the homosexual community. But you might not know that today marks Celebrate Bisexuality Day, an annual observance to recognize the bisexual community as well as their history of triumphs and tragedies.
The holiday was first observed in 1999, thanks to three American bisexual rights activists: Wendy Curry of Maine, Gigi Raven Wilbur of Texas and Michael Page of Florida, a trio of American activists who rallied to raise awareness about bisexuality and to dispel the stigma surrounding their community. These names would go on to be monumental in the bi rights movement.
Gigi Raven Wilbur:
The first of the three, Gigi Raven Wilbur, was born intersex. "I didn't have the benefit of choosing my own sexual identity," she says. She had gender reassignment surgery at a young age and went on to pursue two degrees: a Bachelors of Arts in philosophy and a Masters in social work.
"Ever since the Stonewall rebellion, the gay and lesbian community has grown in strength and visibility. The bisexual community also has grown in strength but in many ways we are still invisible. I too have been conditioned by society to automatically label a couple walking hand in hand as either straight or gay, depending upon the perceived gender of each person."
In 1999, Gigi was awarded the American Institute of Bisexuality Globe Award for outstanding service to the bisexual world community.
Michael Page:
A jet pilot and the founder of BiCafe, Page is also the creative vision behind the flag for the bi community. He designed the tri-colored flag in 1998 to give the bisexual community its own symbol. He believed that the rainbow flag of the mainstream LGBTQ community was simply not enough:
"Based on my own personal experience, the vast majority of bi people I have spoken with, feel no connection to the rainbow flag, the Pink triangle, the black triangle, the Lambda symbol or the double-edged hatchet ... It is my belief that bi people need their own flags and symbols to rally around."
Thus, the symbol of pride for bisexuality was born. Contrary to what you might assume, the pink swatch doesn't just stand for women and the blue swatch of color doesn't stand for men. In fact, according to Page, the pink represents homosexual or same-sex attractions (meaning same as) while the blue represents opposite sex heterosexual (different from) attractions. The purple that blends in between these two primary hues meet represents attraction all or anywhere along the gender spectrum.
Wendy Curry of Maine:
Wendy Curry served as the President of BiNet USA, the oldest national bisexual support network in the United States. In her time with the grassroots organization, the software engineer-turned activist has been recognized nationwide for her work. In 2009, Curry was the recipient of the Brenda Howard Memorial Award presented by the Queens Chapter of PFLAG. When asked in an interview with Feministing what she believed was the biggest threat to the bi community, she gave this succinct, sincere answer:
"Invisibility. Because most people will look at a couple and decide they are straight or gay based on the combination of apparent genders, we fly under most people's radar. As a result, many people are isolated and the stereotypes remain unchallenged."
In its first year of observance, Celebrate Bisexuality Day was held during the meeting of the International Lesbian and Gay Association. Since then, it's been recognized nationwide reaching across the globe to Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom. And while, the rest of the world may still have a way to we have these three individuals to thank for making the bi community a little less invisible.

I just realized I didn't post these two yet. Behold, Inquisitor Katarin Criona, as well as her sanctioned Eldar "confidante" who just so happens to have the same last name, Katarin definitely didn't pull a fanon Guilliman and end up in a committed relationship with an Eldar. I post this today as a way to say Happy International Lesbian day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By this, I mean she totally did and is only saying she isn't because, well, heresy.
I do actually have a nice bit of backstory written for them. You will likely remember Inquisitor Criona's more foundational lore from Luka's lore stuff. She is essentially a genetically distinctive clone of Luka who he treated as a daughter and then secreted away to the Schola Progenium when she displayed Inquisitor-grade psyker abilities and control over them, got instated as an Inquisitor, etc. Etc.
What I wish to discuss here is how Inquisitor Criona managed to find her way to having her most trusted member of her retinue be a sanctioned Eldar named Telbrae.
Inquisitor Criona hadn't meant to come across Telbrae, she hadn't even been aware there were any Aeldari on the world she had been staging an infiltration mission to destroy a warband of Slaanesh worshipping Night Lords known by the title of "The Children of the Masque", where she and her retinue uncovered a large amount of non-corrupted prisoners, most of which human, but the one in the most visibly worst condition being an Eldar of the Ynnari.
This Eldar was Telbrae, who had been taken prisoner and was being planned to be used as a sacrifice by the warband before Inquisitor Criona had found her.
Telbrae was so genuinely broken mentally by the torture she had suffered under the warband that, even though she knew the likelihood of an inquisitor returning such a favor, she made the immediate decision to repay this mon-keigh for saving her life.
Inquisitor Criona, being a member of the Ordo Malleus, didn't particularly despise the Aeldari, and simply had her retinue to open the cells and let the prisoners escape, saying they'll sort through them to see who needs or needn't be purged once they destroy the source of the corruption.
While most of the prisoners fled, Telbrae limped her way to the Inquisitor's vessel and raided a medical kit, using it to tend her wounds, before picking up whatever weapons she could find, and then making her way back to the Night Lord stronghold.
During the battle, Criona and her retinue were mostly successful, but as they approached the end of the battle, the warband began to push back and maim her forces, her Astartes retinue being gravely wounded, with them only managing to survive due to a sudden surprise attack as the champion of the warband being stabbed from behind, his mouth sputtering blood, and collapsing, revealing Telbrae wielding a bit of acquired Eldar tech Luka had gifted his daughter, a Harlequin's Kiss.
Telbrae then proceeded to collapse on her face from exhaustion, and awoke on Inquisitor Criona's flagship in the medical ward, with an Inquisitorial Rosette brand beside her. As she stirred, she discovered Criona behind her, where Criona told her what options she had. Either join her, where Criona would have to brand her with and make her a sanctioned xeno, where Telbrae would essentially become her servant, or be killed as there wasn't much way to secret an Eldar out of the ship.
Telbrae, upon analyzing the situation and managing to tell Katarin was being genuine with her frustration over the circumstances of recruiting Telbrae and the genuine intent to treat her as a proper member of her retinue, upon which Telbrae accepted. Resulting in the obvious of Katarin 𝘝𝘌𝘙𝘠 𝘋𝘌𝘓𝘐𝘊𝘈𝘛𝘌𝘓𝘠 putting the brand on Telbrae's forehead, while also offering her glove as something to bite down on so as for Telbrae to not end up screaming.
After this, Telbrae began serving as essentially part of Criona's retinue, alongside a few sisters of battle and one Justicar of the Grey Knights. Telbrae quickly proved her competence and value as a member of Criona's retinue during a battle where Inquisitor Criona found herself almost eaten by a Carnifex, hence the lost forearm, where Telbrae once again proved a keen assassin, stabbing the Carnifex, before swiftly dragging Criona out of harms way, and revealing Telbrae's proficiency as a bonesinger (ie. The eldar who make wraithbone stuff).
This is why Inquisitor Criona has a rather distinctive prosthetic hand, its actually an artificed wraithbone prosthetic which Luka augmented upon when he next met with Katarin and immediately jumped at the chance to understand how wraithbone works.
It was during this time Luka also gifted Katarin with a specially crafted power sword. A power sword which may or may not be made out of blackstone which Luka managed to successfully charge in such a way to repel the warp, which he achieved through trial and error.
Tumblr media
The time where Katarin and Telbrae began to become close, was when that one puritan inquisitor attempted to hold Luka hostage. During this time, Katarin was, understandably, extremely stressed and increasingly volatile. During this time, Telbrae ended up essentially serving as a stress reliever for Katarin. By this I mean Telbrae found herself being used as a sparring partner so Katarin had something to throw a bunch of attacks at and tire herself out without actually injuring someone, because, you know, eldar are hard to hit. Yes, I'm implying sapphic swordfighting.
This caused their relationship to gradually evolve from simply respect to genuine friendship and then, as you can probably guess by the fact Telbrae shares the last name in that drawing, love. No, the two didn't get married as both know they'd likely be shot on sight, but the two do consider themselves as partners.
This became revealed to Luka when Telbrae and Katarin eventually arrived to that Inquisitor's ship and found Luka had killed him and was pilfering the Inquisitor's treasury, where he then proceeded to do the meme of "YOU DID WHAT WITH A WHAT?! KATARIN!" Before proceeding to calm down, do the classic dad duty of threatening Telbrae's life if she ever betrays Katarin, and then proceeded to go back to pilfering as much stuff as he could before Katarin and Telbrae managed to drag him back to the ship.
Now, for current lore for them, following a lore incident I will go into later, Katarin has essentially become the Inquisitor stationed within the Hephaeston system and its borders, as the prior Inquisitor of the region... shall we say, tried to pull a Months of Shame after Hephaeston II and Hephaeston III came under siege by Word Bearers and Iron Warriors respectively but managed to fend them off. That Inquisitor then got immediately beaten to death by both Arthurian Deus, chapter master of the Hephaeston Hammers, as well as three chapter masters of three chapters who were very closely tied by honor to the Hephaeston Hammers, as well as his own Grey Knights who were not going to put up with being put into attrition warfare against genuinely loyal space marines because of one Inquisitor with a fragile ego. Suffice to say, that Inquisitor is now dead, and Katarin has proven a welcome replacement.
Anyways, that is all I can think of for now. I will maybe add more later, maybe not
