January 2021 & The Year Ahead

AKA my notes from The Astrology Podcast because I really appreciate these regular forecasts, supplemented with this big ephemeris.

WRAPPING UP

Going into this, Saturn & Jupiter will be conjunct in Aquarius on the solstice, December 21. (I’ve scheduled a reminder post so you can go out and see it--just after sunset!) I’ve also done a quick peek ahead and we’ve got a lot of Aquarian themes for us in January and 2021 in general--change in major cycles. Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions take place every 20 years, and this one in Aquarius shifts us to a ~200-year period where Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions will now take place in air signs, after having had them in earth signs for the past ~150 years. Air can represent information and data, and Kelly and Austin also talk about how air can also represent dispersion; you don’t see a breeze but you see the leaves or sand moving with it. We may move towards digital communication and decentralization/deconstruction of social & political institutions.

HIGHLIGHTS

Saturn Square Uranus // ♄ □ ♅

Saturn has been contacting Pluto, who intensifies his structures, but this year Uranus will be challenging him. Worldwide we may see more large-scale pushes for larger change--the struggle for liberation against structures that are no longer working. Exact on: February 17 (♄♒ □ ♅♉ at 7° of each respective sign) June 14 (♄♒ □ ♅♉ at 13°) December 24 (♄♒ □ ♅♉ at 11°)

Jupiter square Uranus // ♃ □ ♅

This aspect has a shorter-term effect, but Jupiter may lend his benefic influence to this struggle and make the change easier or more constructive. Exact on: January 17 (♃♒ □ ♅♉ at 6°)

General shift from Cardinal signs to Fixed & Mutable signs

Jupiter’s and Saturn’s trips into Aquarius this week mean that 2021 will start out with a strong emphasis on early degrees of fixed signs right off the bat, and Mars will be entering Taurus soon as well. Look to the planets and houses where Aquarius and the other fixed signs fall for you to get a glimpse of where this shift may affect you on a personal level. Saturn will slowly trek through Aquarius over the next 2 years, and the nodes/eclipse axis will also shift into fixed signs in 2022.

The eclipse axis (N. and S. node) has already moved from Cancer-Capricorn to Gemini-Sagittarius, moving some personal & emotional focus to the mutable signs. (Eclipses occur when a new or full moon lines up with the nodes.) Dates: May 26 - total lunar eclipse (🌞♊ ☍ 🌙♐ at 5°) June 10 - annular solar eclipse (🌞 ☌ 🌙 at 19°♊) November 19 - partial lunar eclipse (🌞 ♏ ☍ 🌙 ♉ at 27°) December 4 - total solar eclipse (🌞 ☌ 🌙 at 12°♐)

Generally, the problems that cardinal signs have brought to attention or projects they have started will be changing for awhile--fixed signs are slow to get started but long-lasting.

Mercury retrogrades will also be taking place in air signs this year! More in-depth information below the cut (after January).

JANUARY 2021

January 6: Mars enters Taurus // ♂ ➡♉ This means he’ll be squaring Jupiter, Saturn, and conjunct Uranus--possibly igniting some of the issues they have brought forth? Mars and Uranus may prove combustible against critical Saturn, but Jupiter may be more receptive to change.

January 8: Mercury enters Aquarius, Venus enters Capricorn // ♄ ➡♒ ; ♀ ➡♑ This will put Mercury in a square to Mars--watch what you say! Our messenger will also be squaring Uranus in Taurus, which may indicate disruptive difficulties in the communication or distribution of basic material necessities, or changes in currency.

January 13: New Moon at 23° Capricorn // 🌞 ☌ 🌙 23♑

January 14: Uranus goes direct at 6° Taurus // ♅(d) 6♉

January 19: Sun enters Aquarius // 🌞➡♒

January 28: Full Moon at 9° Leo // 🌞9♒ ☍ 🌙9♌ The moon will be opposite a close Sun-Jupiter conjunction in Aquarius, as well as squaring that Mars-Uranus conjunction, forming T-square in Leo, Aquarius, and Taurus. Expect tension and outbursts--perhaps channeled unexpectedly through that empty point in Scorpio.

January 30: Mercury Retrograde at 26° Aquarius // ☿(rx) 26♒

QUARTERLY BREAKDOWN

Similar to January, here are some highlights for the months ahead. (Sorry but I’m ditching the emojis now or I’d go insane trying to cut and paste them. They’ll be back in other posts announcing sign ingresses, monthly forecasts, etc.)

Aquarius Stellium By the 10th we will have the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn all in Aquarius---that’s every visible planet except Mars! Last time this happened was in 1961-2. Look to your chart to see where this will affect you; Feburary will show you how Aquarius is going to manifest for you.

These planets will be hidden by the sun’s light (cazimi), considered a behind-the-scenes “cycle reset” for each. As the sun moves forward, these planets will become visible again in the sky just before sunrise, literally re-emerging into our view.

Saturn Square Uranus, Jupiter Square Uranus

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius From January 30 (26 degrees) to February 20 (11 degrees). This means he’ll be slowly moving towards a conjunction with Jupiter (visible in the morning sky).

March

March 3: Mars enters Gemini This will relieve some of the pressure on the fixed squares; things may get a little more flexible. Lots of energy, possible all over the Internet.

March 4: Jupiter conjunct Mercury in Aquarius Some ease of communications here.

March 20-26: Venus conjunct Sun in Pisces & Aries The Sun enters Pisces on the 20th with Venus following on the 21st. She’s exalted in Pisces, but hidden under the Sun’s rays. Mercury has entered Pisces just a few days earlier as well.

Mars conjunct North Node in Gemini Squaring the Sun and Venus throughout the month. Mars may indicate rashness and the North Node confusion (eclipses)--check where Gemini falls in your chart to see where things may fall off a good path.

SECOND QUARTER OF 2021

April

Venus-Sun conjunction continues She’s not to happy being burnt by the Sun or in fiery Aries, though she does enter her domicile in Taurus.

Stellium in Taurus Mercury, Venus, Sun, and Uranus will be hanging out in early-mid Taurus by the 20th, loosely squaring Saturn in Aquarius while they’re close to each other. We may find ourselves “going outside like we never have before.” We’ll be reintegrating into the physical world as an act of rebellion, or rediscovering older knowledge as something new and revolutionary.

April 23: Mars moves into Cancer Slower, more subtle and emotional than Mars in Gemini

April 26: Full Moon at 7° Scorpio Really emphasizing the Taurus Stellium & Saturn-Uranus square. In mutual reception (in each others’ domicile-similar to a conjunction) with Mars in Cancer

April 27: Pluto retrograde at 26° Capricorn Pluto is the last of those big planets to hang around here. May affect the United States’ chart (having a Pluto return.)

May

May 13: Jupiter enters Pisces At last, the major benefic in his domicile! He’s moved away from his fall this year, but was still co-present with negating Saturn up at this point--but now he’s out on his own. Aggressive hugs, chicken soup for the soul, possibly a return of travel in some places (“spring break”). In a mutable sign he can show us the new opportunities in events that have occurred. However he’ll go back to Aquarius this year--rooming with his landlord Saturn. It’s a bit of a sneak peak for 2022.

May 23: Saturn Retrograde at 13° Aquarius

May 26: Total Lunar Eclipse at 5° Sagittarius Picking up some of the themes from the eclipse we just had in December 2020 and turning them in a new direction. This eclipse’s ruler is Jupiter in Pisces, and the Sun’s ruler Mercury is also in domicile in Gemini (the Sun is opposite the Moon at all full moons, this time he’s in Gemini.)

It’s an eclipse, though--what are we not seeing, what are we missing? Our podcast hosts are predicting that perhaps travel agencies will rush forward and miss some things. December 14, the last eclipse, the US had the electoral college officially vote for Biden and the first patient to receive the vaccine--the US chart has Sag rising and Jupiter in Cancer (in the most common chart).

May 29: Mercury Retrograde at 24° Gemini Squaring Neptune in Pisces--perhaps the increased travel will be due to some illusions. He’ll be STRONG during this retrograde, so there may be some disastrous overload in travel or other Mercurian areas, such as communication.

June

June 5: Mars in Cancer opposite Pluto in Capricorn 26° cardinal signs are especially sensitive to this shift in power dynamics. This has been building since the last eclipse and precedes another one.

June 10: Solar eclipse at 19° Gemini Triple conjunction with Sun/Moon/Mercury, squaring Neptune in Pisces. A time for fantasy and illusions, not so great on the logistics.

June 11: Mars enters Leo Once again, fixed sign emphasis--this time Mars is approaching the Saturn♒-Uranus♉ square, which has been building and will go exact on the 14th. We may be headed for more social turmoil and a fire Mars will make this all louder.

June 20: Jupiter Retrograde at 21° Pisces He has unfinished business in Saturn in Aquarius. He’ll go back into Pisces when Mars, Uranus, and Saturn allow us some more optimism.

THIRD QUARTER

July

July 1: Mars opposite Saturn

July 3: Mars square Uranus This further emphasizes the stubborn tension that’s been plaguing us all year--intensifying in midsummer.

July 28: Jupiter re-enters Aquarius He may be playing a bit of peacemaker between Saturn and Uranus in the fixed signs.

July 22: Sun enters Leo The Sun generally has a stabilizing influence, especially in a fixed signs, but he’ll have to contend with Saturn (as will all planets in Leo for the next couple years.) Both planets are in their domicile for this opposition, perhaps bringing a more moderate, measured negotiation to the conflicts of Mars ☍ Saturn at the beginning of the month.

July 29: Mars enters Virgo He’ll be exiting an opposition with Jupiter, meaning he’ll no longer be aggravating the fixed outer planet struggles. Venus precedes him a week earlier; at a personal level we may be a little more calculating and flexible.

August

First week: Sun square Uranus Is over within the first seven days. A little more positive for us.

August 16: Venus enters Libra Finally, she can enjoy her domicile without Saturn squaring her in Capricorn! The benefics are more free to help us in 2021 than they were in 2020. We start reaching fair agreements, whether personally, politically or financially.

August 18: Mercury conjunct Mars at 12° Virgo Fast & Furious! An earth Mercury may push is towards a tangible solution. Mars is in fall, but is being received by Mercury (Mars is in Mercury’s domicile), and may really listen to the messenger. This also trines Uranus in Taurus, adding a distinct flavor of technological innovation here.

August 22: Venus (♎) trine Saturn (♒) Venus is in Saturn’s sign of exaltation as well--she’s got the power to make some deals with structured Saturn. Coincides with a Full Moon in Aquarius and the Sun entering Virgo.

August 30: Mercury enters Libra He’s joining Venus, and Mars is coming soon

September

September 10: Venus enters Scorpio

September 14: Mars enters Libra The accords reached during Venus in Libra may come crashing down as Mercury and Mars join her--some may stay, but some deals are OFF!

September 27: Mercury Retrograde at 25° Libra We’ll really be rethinking some of the agreements that were just made. He’ll trine Jupiter before and during this retrograde--things will feel good. But with Mars there we’ll have to face the issues.

FOURTH QUARTER

Things will really get spicy towards the end of the year.

October

October 6: Pluto goes Direct at 24° Capricorn fjdhada

October 6: New Moon in Libra Conjunct Mercury and Mars, with the planets making trines to Jupiter and Saturn as they approach and leave this lunation. May see a challenge to agreement and accord in the realms under the outer planets’ rule.

October 10: Saturn stations direct at 6°♒

October 18: Mercury stations Direct at 10 Libra, Jupiter stations Direct at 22 Aquarius

October 19: Full Moon at 27 Aries Opposite Sun-Mars conjunction in Libra. This highlights a growing square between Mars (23°♎) and Pluto (24°♑). Jupiter (22°♒) is trine the Sun & Mars, though, so he may relieve some of the pressure.

October 30: Mars enters Scorpio Once again he’ll activate that Saturn-Uranus square and add pressure to the fixed signs.

November

Mars, Sun, Mercury enter Scorpio They will each activate that outer planet square. The accords that weren’t working in October will be really apparent now.

November 19: Lunar eclipse in Taurus This is the first eclipse on the axis we’ll be seeing in 2022--a foreshadowing for the following year. And this will further aggravate some of the fixed sign tension we’ve been experiencing. It’s also squaring Jupiter at 24 Aquarius, who may ease the aspects a liiittle bit.

December

December 1: Neptune stations direct at 20° Pisces

December 4: Total solar eclipse at 12° Sagittarius The completion of the eclipse series on the Gemini-Sag axis. The nodes will change early 2022, and the themes of the eclipse cycle that started a year previous (last week at time of writing) will wrap up. Mars is still in Scorpio, and the “martial” fixed star Antares is close by to this eclipse--strong chance some of the previous contention will ignite or stay aflame.

December 19: Venus Retrograde at 26° Capricorn She’ll be leading us into 2022 with this motion. She’s conjunct Pluto during this station, slowing down almost to his pace as she prepares to change directions. Venus & Pluto may represent more obsessive love, and in Capricorn things may be melancholic and bound/restrained.

December 24: Uranus♉-Saturn♒ square exact to the minute (5°11″) This is the final, most intense culmination of the aspect that has overshadowed the year (although it will come back in ‘22 as well.)

December 28: Jupiter re-enters Pisces He’ll travel all the way through it this time! ;) From this watery domicile he may put out some of the fires that Mars started. We welcome an empowered benefic as we move on to the new year--good news for the mutable signs!

today is 2 feburary 2021 (lockdown 3.0, day 29), it’s 9.30pm.

today is liichtmes - or candlemas in english - a christian holiday celebrating the presentation of jesus at the temple of jerusalem 40 days after his birth, which involves candles somehow (apparently? i just found that out today by googling the translation).

that’s not really why i celebrate it though: in the village where i grew up, on februrary 2nd all the kids used to go from door to door holding a lantern and singing songs to get sweets (i often describe it as a reverse halloween because the idea is to bring light, not fright to people - halloween wasn’t really a thing for us then, though i’m told it’s catching on in luxembourg nowadays). the week prior we’d make lanterns at school and on the day it’s traditional to make pancakes. all of that combined made it one of my favourite holidays as a child, and to this day it makes me happy to celebrate it, so i do.

there’s something about this time of year that makes it feel resonant. we’re out of the worst of the darkness; spring seems possible again. it feels like the first breath after setting down something heavy you’ve been carrying for a long while. i love the idea of bringing light to people. i also just love lanterns, both as symbols and as objects.

on top of that in the last few years, this holiday has taken on an additional meaning. three years ago around this time, me and my now ex-boyfriend broke up. i later realised that this relationship had been emotionally abusive, but at the time the break up felt like a huge failure on my part. he had been so adamant on all of it being my fault: i was giving him reasons to distrust me, i wasn’t protecting the reationship, i wasn’t doing enough, etc. on top of that i had been single for a very long time before meeting him, following another traumatic relationship many years prior. losing him felt like i was broken somehow, not able to ‘keep a man’ and other confused heteronormative stuff that i was surprised i had internalised. it was a very hard time.

what i know now is that this was the starting point for a lot of important changes for me. i started going to therapy, interrogating how my family was functioning and my place whithin that. i learned (and am still learning) how to listen more closely to what i want rather than letting myself be swept up in what i think other people want from me. all that also allowed me to figure out i was gay, and suddenly, a lot of the out-of-placeness that had always been plaguing me started to make sense. and three years on, as cliché as it may sound, i feel more like myself than i ever thought possible.

as a result of all that, i’ve been thinking a lot about the space and value we give failure; how in the darkest and most painful places we can find the kernels of truth that help us grow, if only we have a little light. we learn most from our failures, right? and out of all of the failures we thought we wouldn’t survive, here we are, still alight.

this is what i want to celebrate: failure is inevitable, and normal, and part of what shapes us. here we are, shining a little light still.

this is part of a daily practice i’m encouraging myself to do for the duration of the third UK lockdown. i’m taking some time to note where i am each day, letting myself sit with what comes up without judgement or pressure. feel free to join in!

29. One headcanon about this OTP that breaks your heart

Oh my god you bitch There's always been this thing between them. The knowledge that there was something there that wasn't brothers, wasn't suppose to be between people related.

They ignore it, as much as they can, except for when they can't. Dylan's draft night, kissing in his room, happy and giddy, everything tasting like champagne. Drunk on New Years Eve, in a closet at their grandparents. At Matt's draft, quick and dirty, in a dark bathroom at the UC.

Every time they swear it's the last until they take pains to never be alone in the same room because otherwise they know what happens.

Dylan breaks up with his girlfriend because he doesn't love her and he can't pretend otherwise any more. He concentrates on hockey, gets traded to Chicago and hangs out with Pussy all the time. He hits 80 pts in a season and he reads the simple 'congrats, I'm proud of you' text from Ryan so often he loses count then deletes it.

He misses Ryan, but he thinks it's better this way. For their family.

30. One headcanon about this OTP that mends it

Dylan calls him, a night in Feburary, one of the endless days in the middle of a long season.

He doesn't know when he stopped caring about what their family thought, about what the cost might be, but he doesn't. He's older and maybe a little wiser and he's so, so tired of everything that's keeping Ryan from him.

"Ry, it's me and I, I can't any more. Please, just come back to me. Come back home, I love you. That's all I care about now. I love you, please come back."

Personality: A bit hot headed but for the majority of the time he's very tame and calm guy, if not a bit flirtatious at times. Just don't get on his bad side. It doesn't look like it, but he is very well read and when given the chance he'll recommend a few good books or get into long conversations about them. He has a music taste that goes well before his birth and past his time of death, but he prefers that old fashioned rock and roll. He knows how to play the trumpet, piano, and guitar, and is glad to play them for those who would enjoy it.

Bio: Duke had loving parents at one point but they couldn't afford to raise him or his younger sister--it was the Great Depression--so they gave them up to an orphanage when he was 3. His sister was adopted at some point and so were the other kids eventually, leaving only him. He was kicked out soon after at 16 because of his already prominent anger issues. He won $100 ($1,042 today) and a Harley in a game of Bourré (a gambling card game from lousiana). He bought himself a guitar and a new set of bad ass threads, took his new bike and left New Orleans to begin his new life. He ruled the roads with his Harley, striking fear into the hearts of many who crossed him and stealing some hearts along the way--occasionally literally. A vicious serial killer, he fancies himself a vigilante, which he was in certain ways. He killed a lot of unsavory people as he went from town to town and back again; kill is an understatement, slaughtered is a much better word and the violence usually reflected the crime. The rest of the time he would kill whoever pissed him off. The last thing his victims would hear was that "Devil's Music"; rock and roll. He wasn't surprised he ended up in Hell. He didn't mind at first, he considered that heaven may be a boring place because of all the goody two shoes singing kumbaya--he never did like church. But 57 years spent in Hell with exterminations seemingly getting worse every year, he barely managed to survive this one, made him get second thoughts. He saw the broadcast promoting the 'Happy Hotel' and was a little skeptical at first, however, soon changed his mind and checked in. He likes Charlie (she reminds him of a sister he had once) and finds her optimistic outlook refreshing, he enjoys playing music for her as a thanks for what she's trying to do (Also despite being flirtatious he will never flirt with Charlie because, again, she reminds him of his sister. Thats probably his other goal to get to heaven, too, his sister is up there). Everyone else is pretty cool he supposes--Alastor, though, he admires. You could say he is his biggest fan; not obsessive or anything but he thinks he's the bomb and sees him as an intellectual. He'd love to talk books with him some time. Plus, as a fellow New Orlean, he feels a prideful connection.

Charcherry Weekly - Issue 80

Heya everyone, Mage of Light Nick Card here. Just another week, it seems.

Happy Birthday Mewtwo!

On Feburary 6th, legendary pokemon Mewtwo turned 29 years old. Reportedly, they took the day off from studying that day and had a small impromptu celebration at home, in the company of friends. I assume Mewtwo isn't one much for crowds. Regardless, the occasion proceeded without incident, and Mewtwo was back to studying law once more the next day, seen with a new briefcase.

May you have many more birthdays to come, Mewtwo.

Chaos at the Market

This thursday, Hek, a visitor from planet Hepi, arrived in Desertia Town. She was reportedly on a mission to detain AI assistant KAZ for threatening the lives of humans, which is kinda weird that whoever sent her would care about something like that occurring off-world enough to send someone out here.

Regardless, by the time Hek arrived at the expected location of the assistant, she was too late. Mai of Hepi apparently burst out of a hotel room and began smashing KAZ's cube with an aluminum baseball bat. Reportedly, there was also a minor incident involving an egg filled with lime green paint, which covered a great deal of the scene, thanks to a nervous breath player in the vicinity.

The remains of KAZ were handed over without struggle, and Hek made her way back to her ship, disturbed by the sheer display of violence.

In other news, Brae Emit now has a permanent market stall! At her stall, Brae is selling various canned and preserved produce from her garden, as well as soup concentrates, jams and jellies, as well as dried herbs. Knowing the high quality of her products, I can almost be certain that her stand will be a must-visit for anyone wanting some good food that can stand the test of time.

Fate is a funny thing; the ancient Greeks believed it was the Moirai, who controlled fate through the art of spinning and weaving. One crone to hold the string, another to measure it out, and the final crone to decide when it is time to cut.

Penelope, the wife of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey, was a weaver; it was said that she would weave a shroud by day and unravel it by night to keep potential suiters at bay while she waited for Odysseus to return.

The Roman poet, Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid), wrote about the story of Philomela: a Princess raped by the husband of her sister. The husband threatened her to keep silent, but she was defiant, and had her tongue cut out as punishment.

Unable to speak, she wove the story into a tapestry and sent it to her sister. The sisters killed the sons born to the husband and served them to him in a meal; praying to the gods for protection, Philomela and her sisters were turned into a nightingale and a swallow.

Weaving, one of the oldest skills, is intertwined in everything: from our myths to our clothes, and yet it is a medium that is under-acknowledged.

Premier Vision is one of the leading French companies responsible for organizing textile and fashion trade shows. Twice a year, they host trade shows that revolve around a changing concept. For the Feburary 2020 show the brief is the word ‘Revelry’, meaning lively and noisy festivities.

UAL weaving student Caitlin Hartmann will be attending the show with samples of her textile work and hopes that she will be able to sell her unique designs.

Caitlin has chosen to interoperate with the Premier Vision brief, ‘Revelry’, in a fantastical way, coincidentally in spirit with the myths and stories surrounding the actual skill. “I wanted to look at something much more frivolous essentially. The brief itself is called ‘Revelry’ so you want it to be something fun” Caitlin said. Drawing inspiration from the nature of Scotland, her own photography, and exhibitions she had seen recently, she emphasised a William Blake exhibition at the Tate Britain.

“He often looks at things about the supernatural and fairies. A few of them really drew themselves to me. I realised I kept going back to that way of thinking [about Revelry], so I thought I would look into something to do with fairies or mythologies, thinking about summer solstice and all the abbreviations of that [like] looking into Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

In connection to Scotland, where Caitlin spent her summer and visited right before Christmas, inspiration was found in poems about the Lady of the Lake, connected to the Scottish lake, Loch Arthur.

“When I looked down the pathway of the Lady of the Lake, a lot of the poems that were written about her were all based on lakes in a really Moor-y Scotland and by the lochs; so, it is really misty and blue, pale and magical in that sense”.

During her trips to Scotland, Caitlin’s photography is mainly based on different elements of water, mist, and fog. That kind of drew me down a pathway of looking at things from woodland to water”.

While on one of her trips to visit her dad in Scotland, they went to a new restaurant that opened in Newport-on-Tay. The restaurant has an amazing view over the river Tay, allowing guests to see two bridges that cross the river to Dundee.

“I photographed it whilst I was in the restaurant at lunchtime and it had the most beautiful foggy-misty scene, and different tones of blue”. Caitlin prints all her photographic research out on high-quality photography paper as the colour can change drastically from what is seen on a phone and what is seen in real life – this always helps with colour matching when shopping for yarn.

The main trio that provides the overarching colour inspiration for Caitlin’s piece for Premier Vison are blue; all three photos have a variant of grey and blue gradients going through the picture.

The pictures were all taken at different times of the day during the visit, which gives a much richer sense of tone to the area, as well as an understanding how a place can change so drastically.

The main blue collection can be compared, and aligned with this photo taken outside the restaurant. By then the day had turned into a much darker and moodier colour – just before nightfall.

The greys and blues tie well with the main blue collection seen above. However, the photo also has whites and pinks, offering further connection with the more moss and tree oriented pictures and their colour scheme.

The greys featured in the photo are also similar to the greys used in William Blake’s ‘Oberon, Titania and Puck with Fairies Dancing’, as well as the light peachy pink.

The winding for this photograph uses green, pink, and a light brown – corresponding well with the other earthy photos she has produced. The winding mimics the way that the colour travels through the photo, no matter what way the winding is rotated.

This colour palette stays coherent throughout all the natural and earthy research photos – it is important to note that black is never used in any of the windings as it is much too harsh.

This photo of a tree stump closely aligning with the imagery of William Blake’s Oberon, Titania and Puck with Fairies Dancing, in colour scheme but also in imagery: “This was the photo that was taken from the wood recycling place, it has connotations of fairy wings or moth wings inside bark of the tree. I thought it was really beautiful”.

Similar to the bark with fairy wings, this photo of a beached jellyfish carries the same colour palette but with almost more of a celestial feeling; again bringing in connotations to William Blake’s work, specifically the Angels Hovering over The Body of Christ in the Sepulchre.

The navy used in the natural windings is also keeps up with the main trio of blues taken at the Newport on Tay restaurant. “I didn’t want to make it too harsh, I wanted to make it like it bonded with the rest of the work.

I am using these navy colours in some of my other pieces I thought it translate easier into the blue sections”.

“The last vestiges of autumn, I really like the different shaping and how it travelled around. It is a much closer detail as opposed to looking at something as a whole, far away in the landscape”, offering contrast to looking at the leaf as whole object on its own, Caitlin also has a companion photo that offers the alternative perspective of the whole landscape.

The colour scheme of greens and delicate reds and oranges, the reminiscence of autumn before winter, stay the same but the context changes giving it new meaning and understanding.

The corresponding windings for the images featured more mossy tones that are less hard and cold than the bark and jellyfish windings.

The research that goes into developing one of Caitlin’s textile designs is not always necessarily imagery-based. “I often think it is quite hard to look into what other weavers might do; It’s amazing to see the history of weave before you, but to then translate that into your own work can often be seen as copying”.

Instead Caitlin would rather draw inspiration from fine artists and other textile designers, and then go off a do research through photography and drawings. “It is a process of looking at the world around you based on the influence of the theme that you are going for, and then translating that through paintings in my art book, that will form the basis.”

Alternatively, lots of inspirations or research for Caitlin’s projects comes from interviews with people that are relevant to the chosen theme. “I will start, quite unusually I think, from a word basis to then get colour depictions and ideas from”.

Her last project looked at alternating perspectives in contrast to her own; the project was based in and about Morocco. “I wanted to think about the way I see Morocco and the way someone the same age as me, who is at the same point in life as me, sees the country completely differently based on different perspectives”.

During a trip to Morocco, Caitlin met a boy, same age as her and in the same point of life, who’s perspective of Morocco became the ground research for the project.

Throughout the project, Caitlin kept in constant dialogue with the boy about how they each see colour differently. Asking him series of questions about how he saw Morocco.

“One of his answers that really caught me was when I asked him to summarize it through this colour perceptive, he said that he saw it as a mixture of dark colours with small drops of red that are filled with the love that his family have for him. That then formed the grounds for the majority of my weaving”.

Caitlin made her warp threads, the threads used to weave into, out of blue-black and green threads. An extra warp, which you can bring in and out of the weaving, of red thread was used to convey the red drops filled with familiar love. She conducted three formal interviews with her friend: one in the beginning, one in the middle, and one in the end, to keep a constant communication between research and researching – like live fact-checking.

After the first interview, Caitlin created a colour pallet purely based off of what she had been told, this helped her make colour studies surrounding the raw pallet.

She sent them to her friend and asked if this is what he meant when he was being interviewed the first time, “the colours had changed meaning; I showed him a colour of red, he said initially it meant happiness but I mixed it with a much darker tone and added some different bits of black to it, so he said no, this now represents more of a depression.

“I said it was still the same colour you [he] told me, he said when you have added these other components it has changed the meaning. It really shows how colour is such a fluid concept, and that it changes depending on perspective and position in the world”. His response to her first colour studies made her tweak and change it until eventually her final piece was created, this she sent to him too for a final interview.

The final piece was very different to the initial samplings that Caitlin has made and become attached too, but the end result was a harmonious mix between what she had seen in Morocco as a visitor and what he had experienced in Morocco as a native – further emphasising her original understanding of differing perspectives despite being that same age and at the same point of their lives.

Conducting interviews functions as a major part of project research makes the pieces have a much deeper meaning and connection, in contrast to only responding to imagery with no outside viewpoints or information – very different from the current Premier Vision project that is majorly based on reaction to imagery.

Research stemming from a word basis to create colour depiction was only a recent methodology that Caitlin experimented with during her foundation year – at the beginning of her fascination with textiles.

Her final major project, Connotations of Love, was based on paternal love. “I started looking at how different people all understood the same word that we have, that covers so many different things. I wanted to uncover how multi-faceted and fluid the word, and the nature of the word, is”.

Caitlin interviewed her twin sister about her relationship with their father, one that has always been very interesting, she also went ahead and interviewed her.

She also spoke to own father about his relationship to his fathers, “he has his biological one and his stepfather, both of who he has had really difficult relationships with at times… his biological father he did not speak to for 10 years for different reasons, he understood that having two [fathers] did not change the love”.

Caitlin also sought interviews from outside her own family, asking a friend who has never met her father her understanding of paternal love and how different it is for Caitlin and her sister’s understanding and perspective of paternal love. “Love is just a word, it is how you attribute it to your own life that gives it meaning; it is a neutral term, but how you experience can make it good or bad”.

The final piece became very 3D based and interactive for the audience, shown alongside snapshots of the various interviews that Caitlin had done. The main element in the final piece were three large pieces of wood that had been found at a wood recycling place near Caitlin’s house.

“There are these massive pieces of wood that they have, that people have donated or cut down from trees to help repurpose them. They have their own workshop and factory which they make handcrafted items from. I picked this one huge piece of tree with the bark still attached on the edges, which is really rough and natural. They cut it down for me into three pieces which formed the three pillars, where I discussed visually the interpretation of my research”.

Caitlin’s discussion included ceramics found at a workshop that had many old forgotten pieces of china that people did not want anymore; she smashed them against the patio of her home, stemming from her research-based on Ai Weiwei’s installation of a precious vase that had been broken, thought to be high in value.

Caitlin’s own china was repurposed to look like they were coming out of the wood itself – perhaps this can be interpreted as something to do with broken trust. Caitlin also cut out blocks of wood from the bottom of her three pillars, inserting rocks and roses trapped in resin, “trapped in a state of decay,” hanging from string in the now open space.

With the spare wood that she had cut out, she burned it in her garden and featured the ashes at the bottom of each pillar. Her final major project piece is much more multimedia oriented than what she is working on now, “but I would not ever limit myself to one form of medium, because there are so many different ways to express feelings and information that I get.”

In February 2020, after her trip to Paris for Premier Vison, Caitlin will be going to India for a sponsorship opportunity. The sponsorship itself will work as a placement for her final major Bachelors project focused on sustainability and is much more akin to the type of work and weaving that Caitlin aims to do after University.

She will be based in a rural village in north-east India, Nagaland, where she will be able to learn their indigenous techniques of weaving, using a back-strap loom, which is much different the weaving technique she has currently been doing – and not something available to her currently at University.

“It is pretty much the furthest region of India that you can go to, so it has a really interesting cross-cultural mix of its surrounding areas. It is a very tribal area, so it will be really interesting to learn about their culture and history,” she said.

“I am really excited to go and learn about how they do it, and get that real cultural sensitivity to what they are doing but understanding how it works in the wider context of the world”.

The prospect of being able to travel around the world learn how other cultures weave and what it means to them is a much more attractive thought of life after University for Caitlin.

Having a cross-cultural exchange of knowledge that would allow someone to find ways to improve businesses, work as a part of the community, “and not just take from them and what they give me, but also see how I can interact with them on a very holistic level.” Caitlin’s interviewing technique would come in handy in such a life – almost like a weave-specific anthropologist.

The interviews that Caitlin will conduct while in India will work as a ground basis for her final major project as well as the final major project essay. It is all about understanding who they are, who she is in relation to them, as well as understanding their interactions together and the connections she will undoubtedly make; similar to her work in Morocco.

“A lot of their weaving is very culturally rich in heritage and have very specific meanings, and they do not want to have that appropriated and sent out to the western world of fashion to have that extrapolated from them. I really want to understand their real sacred sense of weaving”.

From a journal found on the grounds of an old abandoned estate:

January 17, 1892

Mother and I have found an abandoned estate. I have yet to discover why it's been abandoned, but I am not going to question our good fortune. Ivy grows inside the walls and wind whistles in through the cracks in the plaster, but there are plenty of hearths and smaller rooms to seek shelter in. It's freedom from the squalor of the street, and now mother will have a proper bed to rest in. Her illness has grown worse this winter and I fear for her. Perhaps finding this house will spell a turn of luck for us both.

January 23, 1892

Today I went out past the willows that hang over the pond in the back yard looking for rabbits, but found only toads to cook for dinner. There is a tiny graveyard beyond the trees, the headstones mostly too worn to read, but there is one that is very clear that bears the name Juliette Ranier Thomas. A crow flapped its wings at me from atop a wooden cross and I left quickly. I didn't go inside the fence, the place gave me an uneasy feeling. I'm glad it is far from the house.

February 2, 1892

Mother's illness has taken a turn for the worse and her mind has begun to go. Soon, I fear she will leave me and I will be all alone.

February 7, 1892

I have begun to put together some of the pieces of the mystery of this house. Juliette was the daughter of RJ Thomas, the man who owned this estate. She died swimming in the pond in the backyard when she was thirteen, ten years younger than me and barely a woman. Her father locked himself inside this mansion and slowly went mad after her death. He died here as well. This house has seen much tragedy, but it keeps our bones warm yet.

February 10, 1892

Mother's health deteriorates quickly now. The fever runs in her all the time and her limbs have grown light as leaves. Yesterday she took 'tea' with an imagined friend while lying in bed. Today I can hear her speaking as if to someone; she carries on the conversation though they do not answer. The plants I have been boiling to help her illness have stopped working. It will likely not be long now.

February 12, 1892

Mother raves constantly now. She talks to dozens of imagined people about all manner of things from the quality of teas to legal advice. I don't know where these fevered ramblings come from, she has never studied law a day in her life and she has never cared for tea. Her eyes are huge and dark, and when she looks at me, she smiles and tells me strange things. Today she told me that the house is hungry and it has to be fed. She is beginning to frighten me.

February 14, 1892

Mother died today in her sleep. I took her out beside the house and dug her grave there, far from the hidden graveyard in the back yard. I stacked stones upon her grave to mark it, though I doubt I will visit it again. I hope she has found peace.

February 17, 1892

The silence now is both a blessing and a curse. It is difficult to be here alone, with the strange creaking of trees over the pond, the groans of floorboards in the house. But I have nowhere else to go, and there is little reason to abandon such shelter.

Feburary 22, 1892

Last night I dreamed of Juliette drowned in the pond out back, her body floating face up in the brackish water, skin too pale and bloated, fronds of willow trees tangling in her dark hair. Her eyes were black glass marbles, and when she saw me, she smiled with bloodless lips and beckoned me to come and play with her.

March 18, 1892

I had nearly forgotten this journal. Mother has kept me quite busy preparing for our guests. I think I had a dream that something terrible had happened to her but I can't remember. It's so difficult to remember things these days. Mother says that's all right, the house keeps accounts of time. There is music constantly and the three of us have been quite happy these last few weeks.

March 29, 1892

My daughter has begun crying in the night. I keep telling her to go to sleep but she says it is too cold in the ground.
