“It’s amazing for a goalie!” Evgeni Malkin said. “I’m glad he’s still playing and playing very well… I’m proud. He’s family, and he’s an amazing guy. We all know he smiles every day, doesn’t matter what’s going on.”
“When they said 1,000 games, I was like, ‘one thousand games dressed,’ or…” Kris Letang said while smiling and shaking his head. “I couldn't even believe it, that's how crazy it is. It's cool that they're doing this night against us. It’s going to be pretty cool.”
“That’s pretty much unheard of, for a goalie to be at 1,000,” Sidney Crosby said. “It’s pretty amazing what he's been able to do, the consistency he's had. … he’s had an amazing career. Definitely enjoyed playing with him… it’ll be nice to celebrate there with him. “
Crosby had played against Fleury in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and played with him at the 2004 World Junior Championship before becoming his teammate in Pittsburgh, two years after the Penguins traded up to select Fleury and lay the foundation for what would eventually become a championship team.
“He came in at a young age with a lot of pressure and expectation. He passed by a mile, as far as what the expectations were,” Crosby said. “He set the tone. When you have a goalie like that, you have a chance to win every single night.”

I'm fairly new to Pens hockey, can you explain where the "Geno is a Union man" came from? I love it, but I'd like the lore.
Thank you!
Welcome! It's so great to have so many new people in pensblr this season. Unfortunately we're terrible at tagging, and tumblr is a search blackhole (affectionate) so the original lore is mostly lost. I'm pretty sure @ticklefighthockey started it, but she can correct me. The basic mythology is that Comrade Evgeni Vladimirovich Malkin is not prepared to put in a minute's extra work more than he is being appropriately remunerated for. This means he will not wait his turn in the goalie bonk line at the end of a game. He will not speak English unless absolutely required, mystifying his teammates: There are several stories in which teammates would text Malkin to go out to dinner and his responses would be "Da" or "$". The teammates had no idea what those responses meant, but when Malkin replied with "$" he would be at dinner and when he replied "Da" he would not show up. He will refuse to do media at all costs. He wants to go home, Jen.
He will wait out reporters until they leave, because his work day is done:
Tumblr media
He will send content creators after Sid, because they're far better off hassling his husband:
Tumblr media
(gif credit @hunterrrs)
And above all, if he feels he is not getting his mandated break times, he will take them when he likes (1090 penalty minutes and counting). Unity is strength and Geno will be happy to give you a leaflet about it.

The moment Evgeni Malkin became a dad, with son Nikita arriving between Games 1 and 2 of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final and weighing in at seven pounds, one ounce, his already-huge heart grew even bigger.
"I remember those first hours after Nikita was born, and it's kind of like someone flipped a switch," said George Birman, a longtime Penguins employee who's a good family friend of the Malkins. "He completely changed and he became such a guardian, a caring person. He's a great dad, he's a crazy dad (laughs), protective dad. He loves Nikita so much, it's unbelievable."
It's been wonderful for Birman - and for all of us! - to watch Geno embrace fatherhood with Nikita, who turned 7 on May 31. With Malkin still a big kid himself in so many ways, it's clear he has a blast being Nikita's dad, posting about some of their adventures to his Instagram account, @emalkin71geno. My personal favorite was the two of them posing in blazers on Nikita's last day of school, captioned, "We are smart and fun."
During hockey season, Nikita loves going to his dad's games, wearing a Penguins jersey and screaming "Let's Go Pens!" with the rest of the crowd. Then, during the summers, Evgeni enjoys taking his little boy to other sporting events, including basketball games, tennis tournaments and, most importantly, soccer matches, as 'fútbol is life' for Nikita.
Last year, Geno gifted Nikita with a Lionel Messi jersey - which he'll surely be wearing even more now that the Argentinian superstar signed with Inter Miami of Major League Soccer, as Evgeni and his wife Anna have a residence in Florida.
"Geno fully supports him, but somewhere pretty deep down it's like damn, Nikita loves soccer more," Birman laughed. "Right now, he's so serious, and he's doing so good, so I don't think it's killing Geno that he plays soccer. He's a great skater. He's unbelievable playing hockey. But at some point, because he was doing hockey in the winter and soccer in the summer, he completely switched to soccer."
Nikita hasn't just inherited Evgeni's athleticism - he inherited his looks. "He looks just like you. It's uncanny, as if you were the same person," Evgeni's parents Vladimir and Natalia wrote in a letter to their son when he reached 1,000 points. "Anna says, there is nothing of mine here!'"
And personality-wise, Birman says that Nikita is competitive like his dad, which comes out whenever father and son play chess.
"When they are playing chess, it gers to the ridiculous point when they both start fighting," Birman laughed. "I'm like, dude, Geno, let him go, or let him win! But no. None of them wants to lose. When they are playing together, it's the funniest thing to watch them. One is like, you're not gonna beat me, you're my kid. And the other one is like, you're not gonna beat me, you're my dad. I'm like, all right, I'm just gonna watch and enjoy."
Well, maybe today, just this once, Nikita will let Geno win. Happy Father's Day to all of our hockey dads!
this was way too cute

Catching up on some of the things I've been tagged in. Some of these are very old. So sorry. I'm crap.
Fic author interview! I was tagged by the fantastic @lynne-monstr
No-pressure tagging: @pangzi @foxofninetales @merinnan @killerandhealerqueen @strandedchesspiece @thesilversun @silver-colour
How many works do you have on AO3?
266 as of now
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,467,370 words however some of those words are on collaborative fics. I don't know how to filter out the ones I wrote by myself but it's well over the 1,000,000 mark and that makes me happy
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Unleashed  (MCU, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers) - 801 kudos
Visible to All But Me - (DMBJ, Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling) - 666 kudos (ehehe 😈)
The Truth About Cats, Dogs and Penguins - (Men's Hockey RPF. Evgeni Malkin/Sidney Crosby) - 621 kudos
In which Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are surprisingly capable parents - (MCU, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers) - 530 kudos
Not The Russian Way- (The Man From UNCLE movie, Ilya Kuryakin/Napoleon Solo/Gaby Teller) - 516 kudos
I find it fascinating that a DMBJ fic is in my top 5. The other fics are all pretty old and in large and popular fandoms. I think it was just good timing in that I posted when a lot of people who have since moved on to other fandoms were into DMBJ off the back of Ultimate Note airing.
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try! I think it's just polite to at least say thank you. Occasionally I do forget of miss one though.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don't really do sad or angsty endings
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Yeah, pretty much all of them.
7. Do you write crossovers?
Very rarely. I think all my crossovers have been co-written with other people.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not hate exactly, but somone once accused me of plagiarism because I posted a fic with vaguely similar themes to one of theirs. Luckily for me this was back in the LJ days where there was a comm specifically for reviewing accusations of plagiarism where independent people would review both fics. Of course they ruled in my favour but it was really fucking upsetting at the time.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I have, but I prefer not to.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I am aware of.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! Someone translated one of my MCU fics into Chinese which made me very happy.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, a bunch of times! It can be really fun if you get along well with the people you're writing with.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
That's like asking me what my favourite fandom is. My favourite ship is whatever ship I am into at the time.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
RIP my au for The Untamed where Lotus Pier was a hotel that famous musician Lan Wangji came to stay in while he was on tour.
15. What are your writing strengths?
Probably dialogue or soft domestic fluff
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. A beta reader recently commented that in one of my fics I hadn't actually described what anyone looks like. I just want them to talk and kiss, okay?
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Not full dialogue, no, but now that I've started writing in Chinese fandoms I think there are some words that can be used. Generally only terms of address, though. Like someone calling someone 'laoban'
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
I do still kind of want to write some Mysterious Lotus Casebook fic. At least one at any rate.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written
Juxtaposition (DMBJ, Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling)
I don't generally write AUs, and I definitely have never written anything close to this long before. It took me a year to write it and I am very proud of it.

at the mirk and midnight hour by @fanforthefics (StormDancer)
sidgeno (2018, T, 10.9k)
The Fae don't let go of their own. Neither does Geno.
“Three names, and heart enough to hold them all.” She presses her hand in once, then lets him go. “The heart is enough. Heart can bind even the greatest of us.”
“What? Not make—”
“You welcomed me, and so I give you luck in return.” She bows, formal. “Good luck, Evgeni Malkin. To you and your captain.”
There’s a bang, and Evgeni looks away, towards the sound—Flower messing with his goal—then back. She’s gone.
He turns to the rink again. Flower’s fixing his goal, but Sid is staring at him, at where the Fae had been. His skin is snow as he stares, and his eyes are the inside of a tree.
happy spooky season :)
pretty soon here, we're going to have a plethora of fics from @sidgenospookyfest to ready—but i wanted to recommend a few fics that remind me of fall and halloween while we're all impatiently waiting and rushing to meet the deadline!
i love a fic where we dive right into the world these characters exist in, without a lot of setup—as a reader, i enjoy exploring at the pace the author sets to me, and learning more about the setting as we go, and this fic does an excellent job of that. an immediate reference to the fair folk, along with the barest hint that something is Wrong With Sidney right from the jump? excellent, i am so in.
a real highlight of this fic is geno's quiet, steady devotion. he loves sid—adores him—and doesn't think anything could ever happen, but that doesn't cause major angsting or upset. it is what it is, and he's more than happy to spend every day with sid, to bask in the light of his friendship and affection even if it won't ever lead to anything more. it's only when things start to go terribly, terribly sideways that he has no choice but to do something.
this is a gorgeous story. the wordsmithing in this is truly breathtaking, with some turns of phrase i had to pause and reread several times just to let them fully sink in before i was able to move on. the way the author describes the fae closing in, and their impact on sid, is so excellently described that i found myself holding my breath at parts, crossing my fingers and hoping.
and, of course, my hope paid off in a wonderful, dramatic, fairytale ending.
i've revisited this fic many times, whenever i want to read something that's deeply absorbing, emotional, and lovely to read. it's perfect for a quiet evening, when there's a chill in the air and leaves on the ground and you've got a warm beverage at your side.
read it here on ao3!
and don't forget to leave a comment!

UCONN MATT WOOD SELECTED IN NHL DRAFT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - On the first day of the NHL draft, the Nashville Predators selected UConn's Matt Wood at number 15. Wood slipped down a bit further than he was expected to be selected partly because Anaheim, picking at number two, and the Arizona Coyotes at number six, made surprise choices that gave some other teams an opening to select differently than they had wanted or planned to. Speaking to ESPN's Emily Kaplan right afterward, Wood was very complimentary of his UCONN coaches led by Mike Cavanaugh. "(I was) really happy to be there and play for my coaches and they helped me to get ready for this." Wood was the fifth UCONN player since joining Hockey East to be drafted. He wore #71 for his idol Evgeni Malkin. In speaking to Kaplan, incoming Nashville GM Barry Trotz, who's replacing the retiring David Poile, was succinct in his initial evaluation, "Short term, we'll let him develop (back at UCONN). We look at the profile; he's a big body that can score. He's got a long way to go. If you wanna go far in the playoffs, you gotta score. We hope he'll exhibit (his scoring) and he checks all the boxes." Nashville has two former Huskies under their umbrella, Czechs Jachym Kondelik, the Huskies all time-assist leader, and goalie Tomas Vomacka, who they both drafted and played in the minors with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and the Florida Everblades (ECHL), respectively. Wood played very solidly as a 17-year-old freshman. He led the Huskies in scoring with 34 points in 35 games. Wood was superb in the IIHF U-18 bronze medal game for Canada with the game-tying goal in the last minute with the goalie pulled and made a beautiful feathered short pass to Macklin Celebrini for the game-winner in OT 4-3 win over Slovakia. Wood had a three-point performance, garnering a plus-12 and 13 points in just seven games in the tournament. He will return to Storrs next season, be among the top players in Hockey East, and is WJC eligible for Canada. He turned down an offer from the WHL Regina Pats, who drafted him and ex-Pack championship head coach, the current Regina head coach and VP of Hockey Operations John Paddock, to play there and with the first overall selection, Connor Bedard. Instead, Wood chose to come to UCONN and chart his course. At 6'4, he surpassed Tage Thompson as the highest-drafted Husky ever. A total of 10 Huskies have been drafted in the short Hockey East history of the program. RANGERS SELECTIONS The Rangers drafted 23rd overall and selected were able to have a strong player fall to them in Gabriel (Gabe) Perreault. He has lots of offensive upside potential and is heading to Boston College (HE) with linemates Will Smith (San Jose) and Ryan Leonard (Washington). They were together on the USNDTP (USHL) last fall. All three will face Wood at the XL Center when BC comes to play UConn at the XL Center in a marquee matchup. Perreault broke the team record for scoring held by Auston Matthews with 159 points. "It's cool because he's one of the guys I look up to and one of those guys to look up above you," said Perreault to ESPN. Hockey is a big part of the Perreault family. His sister Liliane just completed her collegiate career at Mercyhurst (Erie, PA) (AHA), and his brother Jacon plays with San Diego. His father, Yanic Perreault, is the skills development coach in Chicago and, for eight consecutive seasons, held the NHL's best faceoff percentage at an average of 62.89%. He played 859 games with three tours in Toronto, LA, Nashville, and his hometown Montreal. NOTES: UCONN got another commit for next season in New Hampshire native LW Ben Muthersbaugh, who played for the NJ Titans (NAHL) last year after spending time previously at Tilton School (NHPREP). Ex-Sound Tiger Paul Flache takes a second stab as an assistant coach with the Flint Firebirds (OHL) after being with Atlanta (USPHL Premier) for the last three years. Joining him is a former Ranger from the early-to-mid 1980s and two-time Stanley Cup winner in Edmonton making his North American return is Reijo Ruotsalainen. The 63-year-old Ruotsalainen had been coaching in Europe, though not over the last three years. His previous coaching assignment was with, Kiekko-Vantaa (Finland-Mestis) as an assistant coach. While he had a successful NHL career of 443 games and 344 points and was voted the best defenseman in the 1980 WJC (his third) tourney, had he been playing hockey today, he would rival Erik Carlsson of the San Jose Sharks in the skill game from the blueline in this more free-wheeling era of hockey. After leaving the NHL, he played in three World Championships, one Olympic tournament for Finland, and another 402 games in Europe (Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland). He hasn't been to North America since 2001 as an assistant coach with the long-defunct New Orleans Brass (ECHL), featured one-time Rangers head coach Ted Sator at the helm, and had former New Haven Senator Jeff Lazaro as a player. Ross Colton (Taft Prep), who scored the game-winning Cup-clinching goal three years ago for the Tampa Bay Lightning, was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. Connor Doherty (Sacred Heart University) re-signs with the Maine Mariners (ECHL). After four years in Denmark and nine in Europe, Mike Little of Enfield, the SonderyskE team captain last season, has left the team. Is this the end of the road for the 35-year-old, or is he likely to play a few more years in a new destination? Derek Barach (Salisbury School) heads from Ässät Pori (Finland-FEL) and takes the risky proposition and signs with Vityaz Moscow (Russia-KHL) to continue his European-only career. The newest college hockey program was announced at the Bridgestone Arena in Tennessee, the site of the NHL Draft. It will be the first at a historically black college and university (HBCU). The club will be Tennessee State and play at the ACHA club hockey division level. The coaching staff is yet to be determined. The project was an all-in process as the NHL, NHLPLA, and College Hockey Inc. were all involved. The program will start in the 2024-25 season with a look toward going varsity Division-1 level down the road, and it will be the first hockey at an HCBU, hopefully leading to more significant participation of Blacks, Latinos, and other ethnic groups in the sport of hockey in the US and around the world. The college hockey season is over by nearly three months activity continues as Quinnipiac University stands at the mountaintop. UCONN HOCKEY HOME Read the full article

While your blood is boiling (2/?)
Word count: 1183
Content warning: mild body dysmorphia
Characters: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Brian Dumoulin, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews
[ Welcome back to: 🐧🏒 ]
Sid>> guys, I know there’s a lot going on right now that has us all confused and concerned. I certainly am. But I miss skating, so I'm gonna go to the practice rink tomorrow, just to see how skating feels with all the changes. Anyone want to join me?
Geno👍👍👍>> i come to rink!! Need new skates, feet too big((((
Jars>> not sure how much use I’ll be. My horns don’t like my helmet.
Sid>> don’t worry about equipment, this won’t be a game or anything. Just skating. I know we were all pretty shaky on our feet after h-day
Rusty🪶🪶>> yeah, my center of gravity or whatever is way off cuz of the wings. I could do with some skate practice. Count me in!!
🐕>> sure, I’m down
Over the next few hours, the group chat confirms almost everyone coming to the group skate the following day.
The rink is quiet when Sid pulls into the lot. There’s only one other car there, and Sid knows it’s the rink employee that agreed to let the team in. He hops out, gathers his lighter-than-usual bag, and heads in.
“Hey, Anaya, thanks again for doing this.” Sid greets. Anaya smiles back, her new horns bobbing as she nods.
“No worries, Sidney, happy to help. I’m gonna head out, since I have chores to do, but give me a call when you’re wrapping up, and I’ll come back and lock the rink up, okay?”
Sid nods.
He’s just slipping into his skates, testing the feel, when Geno arrives.
“Sid! How skates feel?” He asks, setting his bag down in his stall before sitting next to Sid.
Sid flexes his toes in the skate, and finds them okay. “Good. I don’t think I grew as much as you did. I’ll probably need new ones, but they’ll be okay for now.” He explains, rocking his legs back and forth to check the flex of the ankles.
Geno nods, and pouts. “I check skate this morning, feet too big. Need new skates.” He pulls his old skates out of his bag, and- yeah, they’re definitely too small now. Geno even tried to take the laces out to see if they would fit without them, but evidently, that didn’t work.
“I’m sure we can dig through the equipment room to find some bigger skates.” Sid assures his friend, patting his shoulder. “Have you had any more issues with your lip?” He asks. Geno’s bottom lip looks almost completely healed.
“Haven’t bitten since first day. Still sore, but okay.” Geno runs a few fingers over his bottom lip gently, and smiles, showing off his impressive new teeth. Sid smiles back.
The rest of the team trickles in in groups over the following hour, greeting their teammates happily and asking about how they’ve all been adjusting.
There are several bird hybrids on the team that, pardon the pun, flocked together. Having to learn how to use a new set of muscles required a lot of work and patience, and all of the birds on the team helped each other out.
Tristan seemed to take all of the horned hybrids under his (metaphorical) wing, and when they walked into the locker room, all of the others tapped horns and antlers with him.
Once everyone that agreed to come arrived, Sid stood up and stepped forward, calling everyone’s attention to him easily.
“Thanks for coming, guys. The main focus of today is just to get used to our new bodies. A few of us haven’t changed much, but most of us have completely new appendages, new centers of gravity, new body mass. All of that changes how you skate, so today, we’re just skating. If your old skates don’t fit you any more, follow me and Geno, and we’ll check out the equipment room for new skates. If your skates still fit, you can head out to the ice to get started.”
A few of the bigger hybrids join him and Geno, and they troop to the equipment room. It takes them 20 minutes to find everyone skates that will fit, but eventually, everyone has skates that’ll work for today's practice.
Sid’s first step onto the ice is… hesitant. He hasn’t changed as much as, say, Geno or Rusty, but still. He’s bigger than he was before. He has a tail. All of this is so new, so unexpected. He doesn’t take surprises well.
The first step is nudged into the second by Geno behind him, and Sid starts to glide.
Ok, he thinks. Like learning to skate for the first time. Knees are a little shaky, but I’m okay. I'm okay. I'm okay.
The assurance follows him throughout the entire skate.
~
When the birds get comfortable skating, they tend to spread their wings out wide when they bank a corner or skate quickly down the ice.
When Tristan and the other horned hybrids anticipate a hit, they duck their heads down to try and meet the hit with their horns. The crack of two horns meeting echoes throughout the rink, but Tristan and Jason (an ibex) are grinning happily, so the rest take it as a quirk of being horned.
The felines quickly have to suppress the need to pounce on a puck that’s passing by them. Brian, a snow leopard, has to suffer through an endless amount of chirping because he was the first to do it.
A puck had ended up on the ice, even though they weren’t really practicing handling it. Someone kicked it by Brian, who stopped the conversation he was having to stare at it as it passed by. His partner poked at his arm when he didn’t stop staring, but he didn’t respond. The puck bounced into the board and tumbled to a stop, and Brian still stared.
“Dumo?”
One of his ears flickered in his partner’s direction, but Brian didn’t respond. He shifted slightly, shoulders rising up and head dropping low.
“Oh, shit.”
His pupils blew wide, and with a sudden burst of movement, he pounced on the puck, hands first. He slipped on the ice when he landed, and ended up on his side, puck tucked under him.
“Dumo?” Someone called out to him. His tail twitched.
“I don’t wanna talk about it.” Oh dear. He’s embarrassed.
Mitch Marner
@Marner93
These are new. How am I supposed to wear a mouth guard with these?!
[Image of Mitch Marner from the shoulders up. His eyes are completely brown, with no visible sclera. His pupils are a long, horizontal rectangle. Extending down from his mouth are two long, sharp canines, ending just under his chin. His expression is one of confusion and frustration.]
~
Auston Matthews
@AM34
@marner93 how am I supposed to wear a helmet with these???
[image of Auston Matthews from the chin up. His eyes are almost completely amber-gold, with a small round pupil. Poking up from his dark hair is a large pair of tawny-tan ears, wide at the base and tapering up to a sloped point at least an inch above Auston’s head. His expression is completely exasperated.]
