Diluc

What? Diluc has a roommate? Did you blackmail him in living with you? Is that even possible? Did you throw yourself in front of his car because you needed someone to pay for your student loans and the easiest way was to file a lawsuit? In this economy no one would blame you. Diluc seems like such the self-isolated character that would murder his roommate in cold blood but in reality, he act’s detached from the world because he forgot how to socialize and he’s desperately trying to cover it up without choking. That or he’s trying to learn how to astral project. If he could drink away the pain he would but instead he buys 20 packs of grape Kool-Aid and injects it into his veins. 

Does not and will not ever have a normal sleeping schedule. You’ll wake up to him working, come back home to him working, and will sleep to him still working. His daily dose of Vitamin D is from the brightness of his screen rather than the sun and he’s filter feeding at this point. It’s concerning. He’s going to crumble and he’s bringing the world down with him. Through the power of tax evasion. But as soon as he needs to walk out into society, he pulls movie magic and looks like perfection. It’s both physically and mentally disgusting. 

He’s actually is a really nice roommate to have just so long as you give him space. Great cook and knows to clean up after himself. Though he does have crash and burn days where’s he’s completely out of commission. You could set the entire apartment on fire and he would sleep through it. The entire two weeks are dedicated to zombie eye marathons and then he’ll suddenly collapse and sleep for 46 hours straight. When he wakes up from his hibernation he’s the most groggy and nonsensical person. His life blood is coffee because you keep hiding the 5 hour energy away from him because, you know, life is enjoyable and those cancer bottles will actually kill him.

Beidou [Happy Birthday Queen 💕]

Despite her appearance, she’s actually really strong and it scares the piss out of you when you’re doing something or scrolling through your phone mindlessly and you suddenly get your spine re-arranged when she slaps you on the back to ask what you’re doing. Likewise, when she hoists you up and throws you over her shoulder so you come with her on her 3am convivence store raids for alcohol. It’s either you change now or else we’re walking out of the apartment in your t-shirt and no pants self. She can and will carry you under her arm that way. It’s both incredibly attractive and horrifying at the same time. 

She’s really friendly and a great talker if you’re alright with her “I must hold you in my arms, fresh prince of bel air style”. It doesn’t matter if you’re taller than her, she’s doing it. She does however, get in a bit of trouble from her rowdiness and you often get noise complaints but Beidou just passes them off to Ningguang and everything is fixed. She has ovaries of steel when neighbors rather confront her personally and she’s ready to 1v1 in the parking lot. You’re trying to desperately hold onto her shirt to stop her from pile driving your neighbors for the third time this week but she’s too strong.  

She’s constant party until we die attitude and suffers the hangover in the morning. It’s actually really funny to catch her in her hangover moods because whatever filter Beidou had, which is none, is gone. She really takes “cursing like a sailor” or the next level and the amount of creativity she comes up with is actually impressive. She can be a bit messy but she’s really likeable and always down to go anywhere with you as long as you’ll do the same. It’s a very ride together, we die together situation. You’re my best friend, you’re dying with me. I’ll see you in hell.

Kaeya

Kaeya on the surface seems like such a chill roommate. And he is for the most part. But he’s such an ass. Your things are his things, no questions asked. If you just bought a really nice sweater or you had leftover food, that’s his now. He’s innocent until proven guilty even if he’s literally holding your lunch. The pure amount of bullshit he can spit out to convince you that no, he did not pull the fire alarm because he wanted an excuse for not going to work, puts him on Shakespeare level. He’s also very pretty, way too pretty, sir can you share some of your genes? 

But aside from that, he’s actually super dependable. You forgot something at home? Sure, he has nothing better to do so he can bring them for you. We’re missing eggs? No problem, he’s just by the store. You’re 95% sure that he just wants to be cheeky and make you thank him for 20 minutes before he actually hands you what you asked for. It’s better for you if you never tell him anything you’re afraid of because Kaeya has no social cues, or more like he throws them out the window, and he’s probably a psychopath. 

He’s incredibly private of his room and things despite his attitude towards yours. You’re convinced he either has a secret lab or that’s where he’s storing the bodies. I was the good guy but due to unfortunate circumstances, I need to stab a bitch. But he’s a really good serious talker for those 3am, because everything happens at 3am, talks about life and the meaning of the universe. It absolutely wrecks your sleep schedule but some of the things you talk about are the most crackhead things like what’s the lowest amount of money someone would have to pay you to walk outside without clothes? It’s a legitimate question.

Okay, what world did you save in a past life to live with his absolutely wonderful woman? Mother Teresa take a load off, take a seat. You have nothing to worry about. She’ll bring home little treats back home and it’s the most wholesome thing ever?? Is this what love and affection feels like? We’ve been starved for so long. She says it’s not a big deal and anyone would do it BUT THE MOMENT SOMEONE BUYS FOOD FOR YOU. IT’S A MAGICAL MOMENT. They are forever stuck in your will until proven otherwise. An absolute ray of sunshine that must be protected. 

She does get super busy so you don’t often see each other or get to hang out as much. She’s a bit of a workaholic but a lot more easier to talk her into taking a break. She’s also a pretty decent cook but she prefers baking and jesus christ, girl can you calm down? Be still my beating heart, I’ve been smitten. Has mother hen vibes that you’re not sure if she’s your roommate or if she adopted you into her family. It’s time to start a petition for the Jean protection squad. Given the opportunity, I would aggressively hold your hand. 

She’s always open to whatever you want to do. Any recommendations or things that you like she will try out at least once despite her busy schedule. She’s lowkey lonely because work consumes her so any time you want to hang out or do something together, she jumps on it like she’s feral. She get’s a bit shy to ask if she can join in on your plans because she doesn’t want to bother you or intrude no matter how many times you tell her that’s okay, she still get’s a bit iffy about it. Please save this girl before she trips. In your arms. Platonically. Just kidding haha. Unless?

Childe

First impressions of Childe were great, until he opened his mouth and you realized how much of a two brain cell child(e) he was. He has two braincells because they constantly have to 1v1 in his brain. He’s lived with a lot of siblings so he has no social awareness or concept of privacy that you’re lucky if you come home and he’s half-dressed. It doesn’t matter if you’re 2 weeks older than him, he’s going to call you 82 years old and why your bones aren’t being fossilized at this point. He’s such a little shit, this fucker licks the yogurt lid peel.  

He get’s really restless when he’s stuck under house arrest, because apparently 1v1ing in the parking lot of a Wendy’s is illegal for some reason, so he makes dying whale noises until he get’s to go outside again. But he’s actually a really wholesome guy, probably because of his younger siblings, that he’ll sometimes get you something because you seemed down and it’s such whiplash? Who is this man and where did he come from? You’re starting to have a change of heart before he tells you that he got banned from the library for accidently punching the school’s computer. How you “accidently” punch something you have no idea but Childe always comes home with some sort of injury. Maybe he’s just incredibly clumsy. For your sanity, you’re going to go with that. 

He’s actually so uncultured that it’s crippling. You can’t blame him too much considering his upbringing and it’s great that he’s so interested in learning new things but...child no...It makes you want to take your spine out of your ass and rip it like a Beyblade. Watching him take chopsticks and stab his food like it’s marshmallows makes you want to fall into a blackhole and let the chair consume you.

how old is your sim? Young adult but I’d say she’s around 38.

when is your sim’s birthday? She was born in the fall.

what is your sim’s zodiac sign? I imagine she’d be a Virgo.

what is your sim’s ethnicity? Her grandfather was half black and half white, Her grandmother was a super light-skinned red-headed girl, So she’s about 10% Black and the rest is a mix of whatever her other grandparents were lol.

does your sim have any nicknames? Her mom called her Nory when she was little.

do they have a job? if so what is it? Scientist of course, specifically Pioneer of New Technologies. She dreams of becoming the Extraterrestrial Explorer. She’s getting close lol

where does your sim live? Willow Creek! Her mom used to live in Brindleton Bay when she was younger but she wanted a place completely new. The family has just loved it and never had a desire to move.

who does your sim live with? Her mother, Destiney Martons and Gen 1 Heir. Her husband, Devon Martons Her eldest child, Diana Martons, named after her grandmother. Her twin boys Dekker and Deion And the youngest Dorian. And of course we can’t forget their adorable French Bulldog Bean. ♥

what environment did your sims grow up in? (i.e strict, loving, cold etc.) She grew up in a very loving environment. Her parents were a little more traditional but they tried to let their kids thrive as much as possible.

what are your sim’s favourite foods? Veggies, fruit, and TOFU. She is strictly vegetarian and won’t let you forget it. For moral reasons of course, but she can not forget what she learned about meat from science class.

So, I’ve been into this series for a little over 12 years at this point, and needless to say, it was literally my childhood.  When I turned seven years old, I got my first gaming system -a PlayStation 2- and the first video game I ever owned, Jak 3.

So I fell in love with the game, and I of course sought to own, and play, the whole series (when I was first playing the games, I played the third, fourth, first, and then the second game, in that order).  When I was about nine some things went down that caused me, along with my brothers, to have to move out of state to live with our grandparents, thus forcing me to leave my PS2 behind.

So for about eight years I've been waiting to play the games again, and of course, I lost my mind when I heard that they were being ported to the PS4.  They're literally the only reason I bought a PS4 to begin with! I've played all the games in the series except for Daxter and The Lost Frontier (the latter of which I'd only found out about last December, thanks to Wikipedia), but weirdly enough I couldn’t remember much of anything about the games after a year or two of not playing them (until I started playing them again in December 2017, of course!).

Currently, I’ve completed the whole trilogy, as well as X.  I'm more than open to discuss any of the three, so feel free to chat with me about them!

Sly Cooper Shitposts

I got into the Sly series somewhat recently (July 3, 2018).  Since then, it’s been one of my favorite series, and one of the only series I play.  I don’t really have much else to add here, other than this: if you’ve never played these games, either play them or watch a let’s play (play them if you can though).  The entire trilogy can be found on Playstation Now if you have a PS4 and don’t want to hunt down a PS2 and all the games just to play them.

Like the Sly games, I got into this series pretty recently (March 26, 2018).  At the time I was looking to try out some PS2-era franchises similar to the Jak and Daxter series, which is why I initially tried these games out.  My first R&C game I played was the 2016 reboot, and while the humor, characters and all that weren’t the best, it was really fun to play and got me wanting to play the older games.  After a couple months or so I played some of the earlier games on PSN (Quest for Booty, Crack in Time, and Into the Nexus) and enjoyed them a LOT more than the reboot overall (mostly CiT though, since although I played QfB I didn’t especially care about it, and I enjoyed the intro for ItN a lot but got bored with it).

I’ve known about Hamilton since mid-2016 (thanks to a former friend of mine), but I actually kind of hated it for a while, because of said friend (let’s just say that she constantly shoved Hamilton content in my face without properly introducing me to the musical first).

It wasn’t until last December (December 2017) that I finally got interested in the musical.  My brother who lives out-of-state was visiting for the holidays, and he literally blasted Alexander Hamilton and Non-Stop in the house several times during his stay.  After listening to them a few times I actually really liked them (especially Non-Stop), so when I got some free time (sometime on 1/14/18, since of course I still remember the exact day I got into Hamilton), I decided to listen to the whole musical, and I loved it.

So to start off, I thought I’d just say that I’ve only ever watched the films, but I have read a tiny bit of the comics as well.

I got into the franchise in early June last year (2017) when I saw Guardians 2 with a friend, and let me tell you, I really wanted to see it, despite not caring about the series at all.  If I didn't care about the series at the time, why did I want to see the movie so badly?  Well, let's just say that I only wanted to see it for that sweet, sweet "plot" if you know what I mean. 👀   I also just needed something to distract me at the time, since I had been going through some really difficult stuff around that time (I plan on making a post about what happened at some point, so if I do, then you’ll be able to find it here).  Once it was over I fell in love with the characters, and the franchise overall, since the second film had not only far exceeded my expectations, but it also helped me cope with the bad stuff that had happened to me not too long before.

I’ve been into this series for about two... actually, almost three years now! (where has all that time gone?).

My brother actually got me into this series!  I watched him play Rise From the Ashes one night (I think it was somewhere around March 2015), and I was kind of interested in trying it out after that (although I kept my mouth shut about wanting to try it, since I was really self-conscious about trying new things at the time).

I didn’t get to actually play Ace Attorney until mid-June that year, when my brother one day shoved his 3DS in my hands, telling me to play First Turnabout.  After playing through the whole case, I got obsessed, and I was also really excited, since he was going to buy the trilogy for me on our Wii (he didn’t live with us, so he couldn’t let me play the games on his DS).  I didn’t officially get into the series until July 2nd that year, which is when I started playing the trilogy on our Wii.

I completed the first game in three days, and I was obsessed with Ace Attorney for about a year and a half after that (I think that’s the longest that any obsession of mine has ever been my, “Main Obsession”).  I also had a huge overblown crush on Phoenix most of that time (which is surprising in hindsight, since I couldn’t care less about him anymore).

I’m now just a casual fan of the series, and I’m down to discuss Spirit of Justice any time (since it’s my favorite game in the series), but I don’t really care to discuss the others (not usually, anyways).  So anyways, thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy my blog!

I’ve been into Pokémon for as long as I can remember.  I know that I’ve been into it for at least 13 years, but I feel like I’ve liked it for much longer.

I didn’t start to really obsess over it until the age of 11, after getting Explorers of Sky for my birthday (one of the Mystery Dungeon games).  Once Gen. 5 had started, I only got more into Pokémon.  I mostly collected the cards, but I did also play a lot of Rumble Blast.  And let me just say, I was honestly so into the TCG, that it was kind of unhealthy.

I lost interest in the franchise for a little over a year, starting at the age of 13 (thanks to My Little Pony), but once I stopped liking MLP, I just went right back to obsessing over Pokémon, but with a bit less emphasis on the cards, and more on the games (Who am I kidding?  I was still immersed in the TCG world at this time!  Just, not quite as much as before).

After about a year of being addicted to Pokémon (again), I started to become more of a casual fan of the series, turning my interest towards other things (i.e., Ace Attorney and Steven Universe).

It wasn’t until I started playing Sun (a month after it released) that I started obsessing over the franchise (for the third time).  I became a casual fan again soon after finishing the game, which was somewhere in early March of 2017.

Currently, I’m just a casual fan of the series (aside from my several characters, who I’ve had around for three years at this point).  I can’t really suggest you trying to discuss Pokémon with me, since I am just a casual fan nowadays (Unless if you want to know about my characters I mentioned!).  Thanks for reading!

Hang in there boys, I sure know how to ramble. 

1. I love my devotion for writing and photography. I’ve been writing for, what will be, 11 years this year, and I’ve progressed as a writer an incredulous amount – from the age of 12 to now – and I’ve sent my poetry to some of my favorite poets – the ones who are alive, at least – and to me, that’s a large step. Getting feedback, which wasn’t what I sought out to do, even helped me continue my path with writing, and photography itself is just a passion that I’ve loved for years, but I’m just now taking more seriously. I want to be a published author someday, and I hate saying it because I feel like the only thing I’ll hear is, “Well, that’s not very realistic, isn’t it?” Or, “You just aren��t good enough for that yet,” so I don’t vocalize that far too often, but I’ve read some published YA books where the writing is do blasé and transparent, so I think, well, if they can do that, then I most certainly can.

2. I love my sense of adventure. I was 20 when I packed my bags and hopped on an overnight Greyhound to New York, where a little over a year later I would end up moving. People ask me all the time why I would do something like that, and my answer is always the same, “Why not?” I’m not very spontaneous in the sense where I don’t think things through, but going out and experiencing something so incredible as moving to NYC at such a young age was just something I needed to do at the time, for myself. I am selfish with my decisions, when I know it’ll better me as a person, and it did. Most people I encounter tell me, “You’re so brave, I could never do that,” and I didn’t feel brave at all. Moving 700 miles away from everything I have ever known, to a city of 8 million was just me being me.

3. I like my complicated mind. I’ve been faced with the choice lately, after years and years of struggling and letting this weight barrel down on me, that if I don’t let myself get better, I won’t make it to the new year, or I won’t make it to see my next birthday, or Christmas. My mind has been sick for a very long time, and I’ve come to the acceptance that it might as well be sick for the rest of my life, but I can’t let that dictate my happiness. I began recovery last August, after I told myself, “Well, you’re either going to get help or die suffering,” and during this recovery process, I documented every meal I ate throughout the day, how many hours I slept, and everything in my life that caused me distressed and an imperiling amount of anguish. During this, I would separate everything from the things I can change, and the things I can’t. It’s been many months since, and I’m still figuring everything out, and I have my days where I can’t move, or think, and I start to think the illness has won, but I’m still here, so I must be stronger than I look.

4. I like the way I capture the world. I take in the small details, like the man on the N train who looked like he never washed his hair and I always caught him reading comic books, or Rosa from my Atlantic-Barclays station, who I always waited for our train with, or how I didn’t recognize Flava Flav the first time he waved at me at work and I completely blew him off. I love the way I remember every detail of Sam from our first kiss to our last. I love how I remember the feeling of his fast-paced love running circles in my heart, and how quick he passed through my life like a small town. I love how I printed his lips deep in my heart, and maybe archaeologists will find the fossil someday.

5. I love how I’m a bitch. In this world, women don’t have time to play nice all the time and let men step all over them like a fucking rug. We are powerful beings, with large lungs and iron fists. I don’t let anyone tell me I can’t do something, and god forbid let a man dictate that. I’m not nice when I need to be. I’ve been touched without my permission, I’ve been controlled and constantly told what to do, and I’ve reached a point where I stand up for myself now, with much desired confidence, and people will see that in a woman and say she’s being a bitch. Well, I’ll be the best damn bitch I can be.

2017

1. What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before? i’ll try to do this chronologically again: so at the beginning of january one of my best friends left to study abroad in rome which was sad and i missed her a lot. i saw rory scovel do stand up. i took an animation class which was fun for the first few weeks until i failed it lmao. actually my classes from jan to march did not go so well tbh but whatever i made it through. my sister came to visit me the weekend before st paddys day which was super fun and then we saw panic which was soooooooo fuckin rad i love them still wow! i went home for spring break and visited a local winery w my dad which was a lot of fun and then a week later uhhh me and @carrot-gallery became gfs!!! and my whole frickin life changed bc i love her so much wow!! but then a week after that i turned 22 and spent my birthday alone! which i tried to pretend didnt make me sad but by the end of the day i was very sad about it and thats when my sweet gf called me to sing happy birthday and i sobbed on my couch and ill never forget that!!! so okay then spring quarter classes started and i was a part of depaul’s visiting artist series which was super cool... i met a lot of new awesome people (both at depaul and the industry ppl that were our guests!) and made some great friends in that class! i was a house manager and camera op which was super fun. i went to a screening of my fave professor’s short film which was also rad. i saw a ghost story at the chicago critics film festival, which was amazing. i saw idiocracy in 35mm and then mike judge did a q&a! the very next day i was house manager for depaul’s student film festival at the music box! i saw chris gethard do a live recording of beautiful/anonymous and then also do some standup, that was awesome. i saw day wave live!!! amazing! i spent an entire dystopian day dealing with megabus. that was hell! i sat at an outdoor amphitheater and even tho i couldnt really see him i got to listen to seu jorge sing david bowie covers and life was magical for a few hours. my sisters came up to visit me and we saw aladdin the musical and had our minds blown, it was soooo fun! i went to the chicago pride parade for the very first time but i went by myself and at one point i was sitting on the curb just crying! not a high point but still memorable. i won a ticket to an advanced screening of the big sick where kumail & emily were there to do a q&a after the movie.... had a fuckin blast OBVIOUSLY and then saw the movie 9 other times in various theatres. i also made it into a commercial FOR the movie i just loved it that much lmao! i moved into a new (and my current) apartment! lorde released melodrama and fucking murdered me in my own home. otherwise i had a pretty uneventful but anxiety filled summer bc of financial aid stuff so that really sucked. i saw good time w taylor and the safdie brothers were there to do a q&a and they were such interesting guys i could listen to them talk for hours honestly. my mom and sisters came up to visit me and we took our mom to her very first cubs game which was sooo so much fun and they won that day too!! it was awesome and we had a great time :) watched the eclipse (or tried to anyway!!) fall quarter classes started and i honestly kicked ass at them, i got on the deans list (i almost typed honor roll lmao i mean its basically the same) i hung out with ari again which was cool!! we went to the aquarium! me and taylor saw beach fossils which was honestly the most buckwild concert ive ever been to i think, it was good shit. i got jobs at AMC (which i have since quit lmao) and starbucks and left my job at the paint place which was bittersweet! me and taylor saw mbmbam live!!! so fun!! and we watched trolls that night and goofed on it so hard!! i went home for thanksgiving and found out my big sister is gonna have a baby this year!! :D i saw mike birbiglia do stand up! which was soooo incredible of course (except i felt bad bc my mom was supposed to come w me but she couldnt go! so i brought taylor lol) UMMMMM MY DAM GIRLFRIEND CAME TO CHICAGO TO VISIT ME AND STAYED FOR A WHOLE DANG WEEK AND IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER SHE MAKES ME SO HAPPY WE HAD SO MUCH FUN AND I MISS HAVING HER RIGHT NEXT TO ME EVERY SINGLE GOSH DANG DAY <3 ;_____; and that was my year!!

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year? last year i said id like to read at least one book each month and watch at least 100 movies - i did neither! im keeping the movie resolution though bc cmon 100 movies should be EASY for a film major wtf am i doing!

Happy Birthday Week! This year’s theme is my favorite genera of Modern dinosaurs (aka, birds)! The first one is the Zenaida doves, a small genus of doves native to America that includes my favorite Columbid, the Mourning Dove! This genus has seven species that are all fairly similar - small, tan with black spots. The reason I love the Mourning Dove so much is its distinctive call - it truly is beautiful, and one lived outside my window as a kid and would greet me when I woke up!

Zenaida is, for the most part, a genus that is non-endangered, apart from one species that is extinct in the wild. They are also closely related to the Passenger Pigeon, which is now extinct. Though they all live in the Americas, the range of each differs, with some overlap between certain species. They probably diverged from other doves sometime between 2 and 3 million years ago, originating mainly in North America and then spreading to South America following the formation of the land bridge between the two continents. Fossils of this genus are known from recent rocks from Florida, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, the Carribbean, and Ecuador.

The white-winged dove, Z. asiatica, lives in the southwestern region of the United States, down through Mexico and the Caribbean, and has expanded through Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mississippi. It also, sadly, has been introduced to Florida. They are round doves, about 29 centimeters long, with brownish grey upper plumage and gray lower plumage. They also have patches of blue, featherless skin around each eye as adults. They have a cooing call, like other doves and pigeons, that goes hoo, hoo, hoo-hoo. They also call out hoo-a to warn for predators.

The West Peruvian Dove, Z. meloda, lives primarily from Ecuador the Chile, mostly in subtropical and tropical environments, both dry and wet. They have a bright blue patch of skin around each eye, and have brown eyes, with both sexes fairly similar in coloration. They are probably not threatened, and they have a caw of hoo-hoo-WOO... hoo-hoo-WOO-hoo. The Zenaida Dove, Z. aurita, is also not endangered - they live in the Caribbean and Yucatán Peninsula, with some even reaching the Florida Keys. They are about 28 to 30 centimeters long, and are similar in appearance to Mourning Doves, but are smaller with shorter and rounder tails, and darker coloration. It will roost in trees, shrubs, and rock crevices and grassy vegetation. They also forage on the ground, and have similar calls to Mourning Doves, but have a faster pace.

The Galápagos Dove, Z. galapagoensis, is endemic to the Galápagos Island and is very common there. They are between 18 and 23 centimeters long and has streaked white and black wings. They are actually very reluctant to fly, and mostly eat seeds and fruit from the ground, living in rocky lowlands. They also pollinate cacti, due to an absence of bees. They build their nests on the ground, carrying two eggs in each nest.

The Eared Dove, Z. auriculata, is a dove from Colombia, Argentina, and Chile. It is partially migratory as well, moving due to food supply changes. It is 24 cm long, with blue-black coloration on its ear feathers, giving the bird it’s name. They have a soft call, oo-ah-oo, and they’re common in savannah and other sorts of open habitats. It has fast and high flight, with mating flights that have steep aerial climbs. They nest in trees, laying two eggs in each nest.

The Socorro Dove, Z. graysoni, is a species that is extinct in the wild, but still present in captivity, with reintroduction programs being prepared at various zoos. It is closely related to mourning doves and can hybridize with other members of the species. It is about 26.5 to 34 cm long, with stronger but similar colors to the mourning dove. It has a disyllabic coo, followed by three single calls, and then another disyllabic calls, all taking less than 3 second to go together. It lives only in mated pairs or solitarily, unlike other doves of this genus, and the young are chased away from the nest immediately upon being able to care for themselves. They lived in low seasonably humid forests, and upon the introduction of cats, these habitats became more dangerous for them, as they lived in the lowland, eating fruit from the local fruit trees that also have become less common. Feral cats, human hunting, and competition with other animals reduced their population until they went extinct in the wild. Reintroduction efforts have begun, reducing sheep populations, controlling cats, and breeding programs are in place.

The Mourning Dove, Z. macroura, is arguably the most famous species, and the reason why this is one of my favorite genera of birds. It is abundant, widespread, and not endangered, with year-round range in most of the US and Mexico, with winter only ranges in the southern portion of Central America, and the summer only range in southern Canada. It is most closely related to the eared dove and the Socorro dove, but these are thought to be separate species from one another. It has five subspecies, which have overlapping ranges, and all appear fairly similar to one another. It is a slender dove, about 31 cm long, with broad wings and a round head, with a long and tapered tale. They’re usually light, gray-brown and pinkish below, with black spotting on the wings. The males also have purple-pink patches on the sides of the neck.

They live in a wide variety of habitats including urban areas, farms, prairies, grasslands, and woods. It lives well alongside humans and migrate over land, during the day and at low altitudes, but not all Mourning Doves mate. There are even some Canadian doves that stay in the winter, feeding off of Bird Feeders. They have a very distinctive call, a sort of Coo-OOO-cooo, coo, coo, which you can hear here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AMourning_Dove.ogg. This call is why they’re so fond to me. They also can have a nest call that’s shorter to attract mates, a soft ork for greeting when re-meeting mates, and a short alarm call.

The male initiates courtship with a noisy flight, then a circular glide to land, before approaching the female with a puffed out breast and a bobbing head. The pair will preen each other’s feathers, and then they’ll find potential nest sites, with the female dove building the nest. They construct nests out of twigs, conifer needles, and glass blades, so they’re never very strong nests. They’re usually made in trees, and they usually lay only two eggs. The young hatch after two weeks and are altricial, meaning that they are helpless and require the aid of their parents. They fledge - so become more mature, but not quite able to fly - in about 11 to 15 days, and stay nearby the nest for two weeks after to be fed by the father. The dove is monogamous, forming strong pair bonds, which reconvene in the same area after the breeding season.

They feed almost exclusively seeds, though occasionally they eat snails or insects. They swallow grit to aid with digestion and forage on the ground, and they often eat at bird feeders. They enjoy pine nuts, sweetgum seeds, and pokeberry, amaranth, canary grass, corn, sesame, and wheat seeds. THey have many different diseases such as tapeworms, nematodes, mice, and lice, including Trichomonas gallinae, with can cause growths in the mouth and esophagus. They’re usually hunted by falcons, and hawks, with corvids, grackles, cats, and snakes preying on their eggs. They drink by suction, and often sunbathe and rainbathe, stretching their wings while lying on the ground. They also enjoy dustbathing and waterbathing in pools and bird baths. They roost in trees when not breeding, and they rest their heads between the shoulders close to the body while sleeping. There are about 475 million mourning doves in the world today.

Here are my answers:

1. Do you keep a journal or diary?

I used to maintain an Word doc, update-log thing, when I was in high school. Fell out of the habit in undergrad, unfortunately. Though I did update it every other birthday for a few years with my hopes for the next few years. I incidentally found/read it a little while back while cleaning out an old hard drive. It... really put my current life in perspective because my goals for myself? - I’ve kinda done that, or I’m in the process of working towards it right now. That was a pretty neat ‘No matter how awful or impossible it seems right now, this is what you really hoped and wished for just five years ago’ type moment. (Sorry, I rambled.)

2. What is your most favorite genre of fiction? Your least?

Oooooh epic fantasy/sci-fi/sci-fi fantasy is my hands-down fave. Anything where you imagine something different and fresh and new, and build a whole complex diverse and interesting world within that concept. Least favorite, contemporary drama, especially of the relationship kind. No matter how ‘well-written’, I’m usually pretty bored reading those. (Though I also realize, books by Bronte sisters and Jane Austen were technically contemporary for *their* time, so maybe my current extreme disdain of the genre is unwarranted lol.) 

3. You can pick one person from any point in the history of the world to have a conversation with. Who do you pick?

Not sure. Can it just be a random person from the Mesopotamian or Indus Valley or Mayan civilizations, that I can magically understand and gain insight into their everyday life of? Haha I don’t even know!

4. If you were a noble or royal, what would your two livery colors be for your House?

Hmmm. Blue and Green. (For my Ravenclaw+Slytherin hybrid personality because I have no imagination lol). But also, I should hope if I were a noble, it is in a country with rich green fields, and many beautiful rivers, so it flourishes and prospers.

5. What piece of art would you have in your home?

Some abstract interpretation of natural beauty, that is colorful and bright!

6. What are you currently reading?

‘Currently’ has been for the past five months (ugh), but Anna Karenina. I’ll finish it eventually ;-;

7. How do you think technology and science will change and advance in your lifetime?

I think a definite possibility is neo-evolutionism, with humans meddling with our own fundamental genetic code to selectively remove specific diseases from being a thing, right at the DNA level (see link, pretty neat for a start!) I definitely also think revolutionized forms of travel, like the hyperloop, will crop up before I turn 40, if I’m lucky. I also have a secret hope to see colonization of at least one planet or moon (I’m holding out for you, Mars or Europa!) and maybe more accessible space travel/tourism. I think things like extensive science-assisted farming and a global switch to clean energy will be inevitable, due to the fact that climate change is an actual thing that will have devastating consequences within the next 50 years, we are running dry of fossil fuels/other non-renewable sources of energy, and one of the richest countries in the world decided to elect in a denialist buffoon for a president. I also think personal AIs and robots will be a thing before the turn of the century! (Aka, exciting times!!!!) 

8. If you had the ability to meet alternate versions of yourself, who made different choices, and see how their lives were going, would you?

Yes. A million times yes. I believe the best life is the most well-informed and thoroughly educated one, irrespective of whether that knowledge can cause distress or demoralization or envy. Ignorance is bliss, but so is cocaine when you’re doing it. I’d rather know all the problematic truths! 

9. Have you ever met a celebrity and been starstruck/giddy?

Ohh I have not. I doubt I’ll ever be giddy, but I’ll definitely express my star-struckness by being exceptionally awkward and non-responsive I’m sure /o\

10. Are you introverted or extroverted?

I’ll go on a limb and say ambivert! I thought I was an introvert, but I genuinely do enjoy being in social settings, and meeting new people, and if I’m enjoying myself, can keep going for hours. The caveats are that I like doing those things on my terms, and I do need my alone time to recharge at the end of it, or I go insane.

11. What are 3 things that make you happy?

An empty calendar with no deadlines, perfectly brewed coffee, and Fridays.

SAILOR MOON GEMSTONES & MINERALS: SAILOR URANUS

NAOKO-SENSEI’S TRAINING IN MINERALS & GEMSTONES: The reason we do this feature is because Naoko Takeuchi named most of her villain characters after a gemstone or mineral and associated each of the Senshi with a gemstone or mineral. Takeuchi-sensei was born in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, the historically famous city of artisan gems carving and distributing in Japan, and belonged to an earth sciences club in high school.  To this day, the Yamanashi Gem Museum displays gems, precious stones, and large quartz crystals collected from Japan and around the world.

Later, she studied chemistry in university in preparation to become a pharmacist and clinical research technician led to a by-the-book “mineral knowledge” being persistent throughout her work, and she got to know all the lore behind a large variety of minerals and gemstones.  See, she had promised her Dad, if this manga drawing idea didn’t work out, she could always fall back on working in a drug store! ☺  And as you will see, the mineral/gemstone knowledge did NOT go to waste, when that Sailor Moon manga thing worked out in a big way!

AQUARIUS: Haruka Ten’ou was born January 27th, 1979, under the sign of Aquarius the Water Bearer. A person born on January 27 is intelligent, a person of impeccable taste and fashion sense, craves adventure and excitement, is extremely ambitious and will never be satisfied until she reaches the top. Hence, Haruka becomes a top race car driver when she is legally too young to even drive in Japan (so she got her driver’s licence abroad) and becomes a talented pianist as well.

This Aquarius person tends to be impatient and bad tempered. They can also be suspicious and very stubborn.  Well, we saw how suspicious and bad tempered she got at just a hint that Seiya was flirting with Michiru! Apparently, her patience and temper will be taxed by some irksome work later in life. I hope this isn’t talking about her time cooling her heels at home being Haruka-Papa to baby Hotaru!

RE: Constancy & Fidelity: The flirtatious Haruka NEEDS to wear a garnet to keep her from impulsive attractions to other girls. Michiru should give Haruka a large garnet necklace and a ring as a gift, methinks!

Garnet also helps to remove inhibitions and taboos and brings courage and self confidence.  Sailor Uranus might be regarded as the boldest and least inhibited of the Senshi, so that fits.

EMERALD - Emerald is the Mystical birthstone for January in the old Tibetan calendar. It is known as the stone of successful love, bringing loyalty and domestic bliss. A good gemstone to enhance Haruka and Michiru’s strong relationship!

As an Aquarius, Sailor Uranus also has Amethyst, Opal, Turquoise and Jasper as horoscope gemstones.

PLANETARY BIRTHSTONE OF AQUARIUS: TURQUOISE

TURQUOISE: The planetary gemstone of Uranus and Aquarius. If you receive a gold ring with a turquoise in it as a gift, it is said to protect you from falls and bruises. What a great gift for Michiru to get Haruka, given the rough and tumble life they lead together! Turquoises help you speak with the energy of truth, wisdom and forthrightness. Honestly, I can’t remember an occasion where Haruka was ever less than *in your face* forthright when she has spoken! ;-D The stone also may be useful to harmonize the male and female aspects of your personality. Given Haruka’s genderfluid personality, I’m sure you’ll agree this aspect of turquoise would be useful to her!

TALISMANIC BIRTHSTONE OF AQUARIUS: JASPER

JASPER: The Talismanic birthstone of Aquarius. Wearing a Talismanic birthstone is supposed to give you more power and make the protective energies of the gemstone stronger by using the Talismanic gemstone associated with your Zodiac sign. Jasper is an elemental Earth stone, its beauty in its many colours and forms resembling  Nature itself - golden sunshine, a night time sky, poppy fields or a deep green forest, desert sands, the undulating ocean, red rock canyons, sweeping mountains.

Black Jasper or Basanite is highly shielding in situations of threats, curses and high risk occupations. I would say Sailor Uranus’ occupation qualifies as high risk! Also with her love of racing cars and driving very fast, Haruka should wear Black Jasper whenever out on the road.

Jaspers are the nurturers, the healers and the spirit stones of courage and wisdom.  The stone brings you determination and helps you see things through to the end. Undoubtedly Jasper would help Sailor Uranus have the persistence to see through her mission with Sailor Neptune to the end. Michiru, are you reading this? Jasper prolongs sexual pleasure! AMETHYST, OPAL, AGATE, AMBER:

AMETHYST - Amethyst is the birthstone for Aquarius in Hindu astrology, and is most well known for avoiding addictions or drunkenness. A risk taking individual like Haruka can certainly use the protection of Amethyst if she feels like indulging herself.

OPAL  - Opal is blonde Minako’s birthstone.  Since Opal is supposed to enhance blonde hair, fittingly, it is one of Haruka’s Zodiac gemstones as well.  

AGATE - Agate is a horoscope stone both for Capricorn (Hotaru) and Aquarius (Haruka).  Agate soothes and calms, healing inner anger or tension and creates a sense of security and safety. Given Haruka’s volatile temper, this is an excellent stone for her.  Haruka’s personal favourite gemstone is Amber.

Haruka shares her birthday with the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the writer of Alice In Wonderland, Lewis Carroll. Both of these, like our Sailor Uranus, had a sarcastic sense of humour and dislike of authority.

AMBER -  Haruka’s personal favourite gemstone, though it’s not really a stone, but the fossilized resin of ancient evergreen trees.  Until I started buying amber jewellery, I wasn’t aware of the variety of forms this pine resin fossil comes in, from the conventional honey gold shade to cherry brandy, to cream, and even green with air bubbles. Many pieces of amber also have fossilized insects which were trapped in the resin 50 million years ago.

Amber, the Jurassic Sunshine Stone, brings the wearer inner peace, a sunny disposition and helps attract love as well as enhances fertility, a Happy Stone that helps with depression. Also known as the Memory Stone, it’s not only good for remembering things but medicinally, was used for thousands of years to alleviate headaches, heartaches, and pains of all kinds.
