I’m no mystery writer. I can’t promise airtight murder cases. Still, I have quite a lot of ideas for the first chapter of "I DISAGREE: An Ibuki Mioda SDR2 Protag Swap AU." Let me piece together something - or some of something, anyway - for our new protagonist to piece together in her first pitched battle against sheer despair. Strap in, cuz it’s a long one.

We've All Been Looking for the One: The First Trial

The Monokuma File only confirms the obvious. The victim: Chiaki Nanami, Ultimate Gamer. Time of death: when else but in the dead of night? Cause of death: impalement, as evidenced by the gushing tunnel connecting gut and back.

Ibuki screamed even louder than Hiyoko, drawing everyone - including the bear. Hajime vomited. Byakuya fell on his knees. Fuyuhiko bemoaned the bastard who did this. Mikan broke down. Monokuma cheered. Everyone else cried out. But with a limited window before the imminent trial, there was no time to grieve - only to investigate.

Let’s follow the investigation and trial through the main suspects:

Nagito finds the Ultimate Kendoka’s sword at the bottom of the swimming pool, definitely not where Byakuya had stowed it after confiscating it. Only this could be the murder weapon, and surely only its wielder could use it so effectively. Her do-nothing demeanor could be a put-on for all anyone knows, and her being barricaded like every other patient means nothing when Chiaki also somehow escaped.

<Peko Pekoyama!>

Fuyuhiko vigorously defends her, leading everyone to question why he paid so much more attention to her than anyone else. Ibuki notes that before even knowing the girl was sick, he noticed that she wasn’t at the restaurant and rushed to find her. Peko says they should stop hiding their connection. That’s how everyone learns that the two have known each other practically since birth. The Ultimate Kendoka is the Ultimate Yakuza’s lifelong bodyguard and companion.

Ibuki thinks it’s adorable that he did so much to protect her. The others feel differently …

<Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu!>

A few things become clear: the killer needed access to the sword, and they couldn’t have been stuck in a room. So, either a patient with help from staff (Fuyuhiko released Peko, who killed Chiaki) or a member of the staff on their own (Fuyuhiko did it himself to cure Peko). Fuyuhiko had already shown a willingness to kill before this sudden pivot to nursing. Maybe he volunteered specifically to become the blackened after all!

“No, that’s wrong!” Hajime’s been practically nonfunctional after seeing Chiaki’s corpse. Though he’ll never know it in this AU, her presence in the trials would’ve grounded him in a way no one else could, enabling him to suss out contradictions and find the truth. This is what allows another person to become the protagonist. With Fuyuhiko in the crosshairs, though, he’ll finally spring into action. “Peko would’ve died too,” he continues, “and he’d never let that happen.”

A few other clues will vindicate the pair. I like the idea that Hajime is Fuyuhiko’s alibi because they spent the whole night in bed together. Kuzuhina fans, rejoice! (Fuyuhiko, too straightedge to let the implications stand, insists they just watched samurai movies until they passed out.)

This is when Ibuki and Mikan realize something crucial. “She wasn’t acting like herself,” Fuyuhiko says about Peko’s recent behavior shift. He’s the only one who’d know what any patient was like before the island. It’s no coincidence that they started acting weird when they fell ill. The illness itself radically altered their personalities! “It’s like Opposite Day Disease,” Ibuki shouts, “or Being-Really-Different Disease!” (And this is why I chose Peko as one of the infected!)

Monokuma confirms their theory, but claims dibs on naming the malady he invented. He dubs it Despair Disease.

<Byakuya Togami!>

Up to this point, Ibuki’s mostly been little more than a contributor to the trial’s progress. Byakuya Togami dominates the conversation with his self-proclaimed leadership role. His keen observation skills and high intellect back him up. What he can’t quite manage is to piece together a clear narrative of the night’s events, though he still expects everyone to catch up with him.

Several things become clear:

The staff were around the contagious patients long enough that someone could’ve caught Despair Disease from them.

The symptoms of the infected cleared up after Chiaki’s murder, though the exact timeframe is unknown.

Hajime and Fuyuhiko are each other’s alibis.

Ibuki and Mikan, having also shared a bed (Hiyoko: “Hey, is that hotel a love hotel?”), are each other’s alibis.

(I've learned that two people can’t just be each other’s alibis. Just assume there was an awkward moment, very late at night, where Mikan and Fuyuhiko tried sneaking out of what they both know to be, respectively, Ibuki and Hajime’s rooms. They both ducked back in and apparently stayed.)

No one saw Byakuya after the group split and left Ibuki’s room.

Byakuya was the one who insisted on storing Peko’s sword.

He also insisted on keeping its location secret from everyone else.

The alleged leader and protector of the group doesn’t take the subsequent accusations well. (Being the only one on staff who slept alone that night doesn’t help.) Ibuki’s confident that he’d never murder someone in a million years, but vibes alone aren’t enough for others to drop their suspicions. This is her moment to shine as the protagonist! Her vivid imagination allows her to conceive possibilities that wouldn’t cross anyone else’s minds and devise creative solutions that most would immediately dismiss.

One funky idea I had for how his name gets cleared involves Chiaki’s nails. While examining her corpse, Ibuki notices dark marks beneath them - flesh, torn off when the victim fought back. Kitty had claws, but who bears the claw marks? Only one way to find out: “Quick! Take off your top!” With no choice but to remove his dinner jacket and undershirt, Byakuya shows no signs of that damage on his chest, arms, or back.

Pants are out of the question. At least, not until others expose their upper halves first. Despite Teruteru’s insistence, they start with the boys:

The slim Fuyuhiko is free of marks.

So is the surprisingly wide-chested Hajime … “but,” Ibuki teases, “you already knew that, didn’t you, Hiki-chan?”

Nagito has scars, but they’re old. Mikan correctly guesses they’re from past surgeries.

Kazuichi, who’s been near-catatonic since being discovered in his room, is reluctant to move, let alone strip. Ibuki recalls that his crazy pecs were exposed throughout his entire hospital stay. They thought that finding him with his jumpsuit zipped up was a sign of normalcy …

The others urge him to comply. With great reluctance, he unzips. This action reveals a bloodstained wifebeater.

And with Dangancember starting I have to say two things, firstly happy birthday Mod. I kinda feel for the people who are born in December since due to Christmas, I feel a lot of their birthday gifts are held off until Christmas. Source: Family members of mine who are also born in December.

And now we get to 2-3, widely considered one of the worst canon cases in the franchise. This has been debated, analysised and deconstructed by many for almost a decade now, with many wild takes. You cover the main points why people hate this chapter; the Despair Disease being kinda BS, the lack of character agency, Hiyoko being overlooked and the Mikan plot hole. However I do want to inject my own insight and some stuff that others have talked about.

Firstly the whole "Hiyoko was meant to be a survivor and Fuyuhiko was a Chapter 3 death but it got changed at the last minute because Kodaka felt it would make Peko's sacrifice hollow" is actually a complete lie. This was never said by the developers and it was a false rumour that started on a South Korean forum with no source behind it. Its probably the biggest misconceptionn the Danganronpa fanbase has as a large chunk of it, including me at one point, used to believe it.

I do think Ibuki needed to die in Chapter 3 because of the whole "Shoo Out The Clowns" the trope where as things get more serious, the more comedic and light-hearted characters would either get more solumn moments or just be killed off entirely to make way for the future plot points. And since Ibuki was the main source of happiness on Jabberwock Island, she needed to be killed off. But I do think Hiyoko should have survived past Chapter 3 because her development was more of a slow burner when compared to Fuyuhiko who does a complete 180 on his personality. It would be interesting to see how she reacts to Mikan being the culprit, the Funhouse and learning she has a growth spurt.

So if we can't shake off the whole double killers, then who takes Hiyoko's place? A lot of people suggest Sonia under the logic she doesn't do anything in the plot, and her death would turbocharge Kazuichi's and Gundham's character development. Heck you wouldn't even need to change the plot all that much, just have Sonia go to get the mirror from the Music Venue to help Hiyoko tie her Kimono on. But this never sat right with me as it sounds a lot like fridging. So my logic has been to have Kazuichi killed off as like Sonia he also really doesn't do anything post Chapter 3, the best I can think of is him coming up the plan to catch Nagito in Chapter 5 but someone else could have also done that easily, such as Fuyuhiko or Hiyoko for example. But my main reason is that the DR2 survivors all have in common the theme of loss. Fuyuhiko lost Peko his childhood friend and someone he was developing feelings for, Sonia lost Gundham a person who she felt understood her as a indivivual, Akane lost Nekomaru her coach and the one who taught her to be the best she can be, and while everyone was devestated by Chiaki's loss, Hajime was the most effected by it as she was always by him no matter what. And what about Kazuichi? He...needs to learn to stop being a coward...doesn't really have the same ring to it. But if Hiyoko was there then she would have lost Mahiru, the one person who tried to understand her and teach her that not everyone on the island is out to get her.

Regarding the Despair Disease while I haven't really gotten into Instagram Fanganronpas, I have heard that Ronpa and Friends, the Mickey Mouse Fanganronpa brings back the Despair Disease for its Chapter 3, but its done in a better way since rather then be a random virus, its discovered it was caused by auditory hypnotic mind control caused by the morning announcement. And rather then radically change people's personalities, like real life hypnosis, it removes any filters the victims have so they are behaving what they truly are deep down, and nothing they do is against their moral code. Honestly if the canonical Despair Disease was like that, then it would be very interesting as aside from the fact having it being a auditory hypnosis makes this way more believable to the player, and also how Monokuma can turn it off so easily, but it means that nothing the characters do is something they wouldn't do as its who they truly are deep down.

I also see it as foreshadowing for the purpose of the Killing Game since this is when the motives become far less fair and more about just making sure bodies drop as AI Junko's motive is to have everyone killed off so she can possess their bodies. As such this shift from temptations to things to guarantee deaths, is more hinting towards that. And the plot hole could easily be patched up if Chiaki was still sleepy and Hajime had to really search for other people to wake up so they could go to the music venure or heck make it so it takes longer to get from the motels to the music venures. Both of those fixes would stop people from questioning how tf Mikan was able to do this. Or maybe have a scene in Chapter 3 where its revealed Mikan's clumsy behaviour is just a act she puts on to make people notice her and in reality she is a lot more nimble then others think.

Any of those changes could have resolved the plot hole. And also don't have it so Mikan just outright spells out critical information which just makes her look even more sus. Yes I'm talking about the Monomi bag there, that was a really dumb move on Mikan's part. As I do believe Mikan going crazy was a reason why LINUJ was thinking of making Kanata into a psycho originally, to hark back to Mikan before he had a change of heart and made her wholesome. And I am forever grateful for that.

Another issue with the Monokuma Theater play? It was completely forgetable as before you brought it up, I completely forgot this was a thing in the chapter which shows how little of a impact it has overall to the case in general. Even if it was a red herring, at least make it so Mikan was trying to throw people off with it and not be something completely pointless.

There's a reason we talk about Chapter 3 syndrome in Danganronpa games because like Ace Attorney, its normally where the plot is at its weakest. And even the "best" Chapter 3, which its really obvious what that is since we have covered all the others, has its own issues.

And lastly Mikan's execution sucks balls. Like...what on earth was going on there? It had no reference to her talent, it had no reference to her personality, it was just the most wtf thing I have seen. At least if you are gonna do a execution, make it so it actually fits the character in question. I'm actually surprised you didn't touch on the execution in all fairness, but let's face it, among the many things wrong with 2-3, Bye Bye Ouchies is the least of your worries.

Its not a case where you scream at the game on why it exists like the Dishonourable Mentions, but its still a very, very weak chapter, which did require some more fine tuning and cooking in the oven before it came out. Its all well and good setting up for future plot points but you need to have it make sense in the actual narrative at the time.

The good news is that we start at the bottom so things only get better from here.

Context: his birthday is today and the reader decides to take him out to relax while everyone else is cooking

“Alright cook him something like smoothie, a nice healthy meal. Hanamura hates the nasty unhealthy stuff and then make sure this place is nice- if I come back to a mess. I WILL SQUABBLE WITH ALL OF YOU! AND PEKO DON’T EVEN TRY DEFENDING KUZURYU CUZ IMMA PUNT HIM THEN SUQABBLE WITH YOU BISH!” Everyone poker faced then watched (Y/N) leave, “It’s sad how she doesn’t mean it because she’s the ultimate farmer.” Yep (Y/N) the ultimate Farmer, she can fight but she’d never hurt a fly. Just scold and then yell as if she was the great papyrus from UnderTale: “TERUTERU!!! LET US GO OUT ON A DATE!” Teruteru stops doing his hair, “Sugar bear can you tone down the yellin, I’m watching this anime and-“ She squints, “Which one? It better not be promise never land.” Silence, “It’s actually Attack-“

“BABE- Date now!” The farmer dragged her adorable boyfriend out of their cottage then stroll alongside the park, “I was thinking we’d have some nice tea with a touch of relaxing and some cold flowing breezes.”

Teruteru debated but then he nods then lays beside (Y/N) while a few people took the time to serve the couple.

“Mam I need you to move please.” (Y/N) opened one eye, “May I ask why?” The server immediately explains, “The birthday guest next to you is going to have a free massage and we’d like to get by.” With a sigh, ‘I don’t wanna shareeee’ she caves in and Teruteru blushed lightly as the server starts rubbing his back.

Meanwhile Nagito somehow was able to make a nice perfect diced apple course meal with some vegetarian burgers with Nekomaru. Hajime sweats a bit when Mikan guided him with the glassware, “Hinata work with me here.” Kazuichi rubs his hair back. “(Y/N) says healthy but do you think some nice crisp bread will do? It’s sorta sweet- AGHH Gundham along with Sonia agree that it’s just right but I’m a bit worried.” Akane hums then tastes the bread and nods. “Ibuki agrees, the bread is just right. Maybe You’re overthinking it Kazuichi.”

The ultimate mechanic nods, “Agreed. Sorry guys.”

Speaking of bread, that’s how Teruteru felt. Like a dough being massaged to be baked, he sighs after they finished then giggled when (Y/N) pecked and held his face to her chest. “Comfy?” He nods, “Very.”

Once they got to the restaurant (Y/N) opened the door then she spoke in a deep tone. “For you babe~” with that the door opened and he gasps, “Oh my…you guys did all this?” She checks in and clasped her hands together. The room was set and the tables were ready all they needed was a birthday boy to serve to, “Happy birthday my sugar dumpling.” Teruteru turns then shared a kiss with his lover before leading her ahead to the goods. “Dig in everyone! I can’t eat all this alone.”

Soina gives Peko and Akane makeovers to help her Mangaka S/O get inspiration

·       You sighed, placing down your pencil and looked out the window. “Y/N, is something wrong?” After a moment of silence, you looked over your shoulder, finding your girlfriend laying on your bed, placing down the book she was reading. “Come her for a sec.” You slumped in your seat, looking up to the ceiling as Sonia looked over your shoulder. “What do you think?” “Hmm… Not your best work, but it’s still amazing!” “I thought so.” You picked up your pencil, mindlessly tapping it against your desk. “I can still draw but… I’m not inspired. That’s why this is so plain.” “Have you taken a break?” “Yeah.” “Hmm… Listened to music?” “Yes.” “New music?” “Yes.” “Gone for a walk?” “Yep.” “How about a run?” “I did some training with Nidai.” “Gone people watching?” “I watched Oma pull some pranks. Some neat reactions, but… nothing.” Sonia daintily picked up the sketch pad and examined it. You had drawn many things for warm-up, all was beautiful but that seemed to waver when drawing people, particularly their faces. Those were just so bland and flat.

·       You decided to keep trying to find inspiration, but if not, maybe taking the whole day off would do the trick. The next day was Sonia’s birthday and you were most certainly going to devote all your time with her.

·       On the day of Sonia’s birthday, she had a single request of Peko and Akane. She wanted to see how they’d look with make up on. Both girls being athletes never wore makeup since it’d always just get runny and be uncomfortable. Also putting on makeup was fun for Sonia. Back in her homeland, others put on her makeup for her, but here, here she had to do it on her own, she was having a blast, so even if they’d immediately remove it, she wanted to give them makeovers just for her own satisfaction.

·       Both agreed without a second though and off they were to Sonia’s dorm room.

·       Sonia took you along as well. You had become Sonia’s face model of sorts, her always practicing any new techniques on you and herself. It was a relaxing affair so an hour or so of this sounded absolutely lovely to you.

·       Surprisingly Akane was actually rather used to makeup, she placed on the stuff often when she worked to provide food for her siblings. Peko whoever, knew nothing. Sonia and Akane ended up working together. Akane was rather good since she had helped some of her sisters put on makeup sometimes.

·       Eventually word had reached Ibuki and she joined in, and with her everyone else from their class.

·       Fuyuhiko was flabbergasted, seeing Peko in a way he never had before. He and her had been together for literally their entire lives so seeing a new side of her was shocking, but… he liked it. Not that he would admit it, but his light blush gave it away.

·       Sonia so excitedly gave everyone makeovers. Even Peko and Akane ended up joining in. Peko rather clumsily tried applying eyeliner on Fuyuhiko without accidentally getting his eye. Akane tackled Nekomaru to the ground before making him the most gorgeous person in the room.

·       To Sonia’s delight Gundham gave her a makeover in his style, much to Kazuichi’s dismay. “Y/N, Y/N, you must see these new markings with which elevate my astral level!” You glanced up from your sketchpad, only to clutch it to your chest, staring at her. “You look awesome!” Gundham simply nodded approvingly as his hamsters did the same.

·       “So, I see you’re drawing.” “Yeah! Care to take a look?” Sonia eagerly looked over the pages. “Everything is so lively, as it should be. So my plan to reignite your inspiration worked!” “You… Sonia.” Not wanting to mess up her makeup, you instead took Sonia’s hand and kissed the back of it so tenderly. “Thank you. You’re amazing.” “I’m just glad I could make you happy.”

·       Though cramped with so many people in one small room, it was filled with laughter and lighthearted chatter. This was certainly one of the best birthdays Sonia had ever had, and for her wish,  she wanted these people, her classmates and friends to always gather once a year at lest for all her birthdays to come, even after they graduate. There was nothing she wanted more than that.
