Diwali / Deepawali 2017 – Five days of Diwali
Deepawali is the combination of two Sanskrit words.Deep meaning light and Awali meaning rows. When they merge we get one word Deepawali meaning rows of lights. Deepawali is commonly known as Diwali.
Diwali the Hindu festival of lights is celebrated with the performance of Lakshmi Pooja (worship unto the Goddess of light, wealth and prosperity) and at night time, thousands of earthen lamps called Deeyas are lit to dispel darkness. The festival honors the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, good luck, riches and generosity. She will visit every home during the festival. Diwali also celebrates the triumph of good over evil.
Diwali celebrated after the return of Lord Rama from exile was universal in nature. It is said that Lord Rama returned home on Diwali night after fourteen years of exile in the forest. The city of Ayodhya appeared to be a garden of light during that night as everyone went out to meet and greet Him in the traditionally ceremonial manner.
Diwali is a series of festivals of 5 days, which fall towards the end of the Hindu month of Ashwin and the beginning of the month of Kartik.
The significance of these days is explained below:
First Day of Diwali (Dhanteras)-Dhanvantri Pujan,Kuber Puja,Pardosh fast and Evening Deep-daan) – 17th October, 2017
The first day of Diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhanwantari Triodasi also called Dhan Theras. It is in fact the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksh (the dark forthnight) of the month of Kartik. On this day it is end of rainy season called Chaturmass.
On this day, Lord Dhanvantri came out of the ocean with Ayurvedic medicine (medicine which promotes healthy long life) for mankind.
1. This day marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations. On this day at Sunset,Hindus should bathe and offer a lighted deepak with Prasad (sweets offered at worship time) to Yama Raj (the Lord of Death) and pray for protection from untimely death. This offering should be made near a Tulsi tree (the Holy Basil) or any other sacred tree that one might have in their yard. If there is no sacred tree, a clean place in the front yard will suffice.
Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi should be done during Pradosh Kaal which starts after sunset and approximately lasts for 2 hours and 24 minutes. In the evening at the time of Pardosh Kaal Deepak of mustard oil is placed in front of the house it saves from the sudden death of the family members. This is the auspicious time for worshipping Lord Shiva,as worshipping Lord Shiva during this period gives fruitful results. The night time is considered to be full of energies of destruction forces are not auspicious. Lord shiva is lord of malefic forces of Bhootas and Ghosta and Jinnas. Lord Shiva is controller of these forces and their remote control with the Lord Shiva and these forces are in the strict control of Lord Shiva. Persons worshipping get relief from these negative forces and these forces are negligible during Day time with the supreme power of Sun and gain power in the nights. While worshipping Lord Shiva protection is granted and on this day offering of Deepak or Diya saves and protect from the untimely sudden death.
It is considered to be an auspicious day to buy Gold.
Second Day of Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi-Narak Harini)-Hanuman Jayanti, ubtan isnan,Yaam tarpan, evening deep-daan,18th October, 2017)
This day on which the demon Narkasur was killed by Krishna an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It signifies the victory of good over evil-light over darkness. In south India people wake up in the early morning in the shadow of stars before sun rise in open sky is equivalent of taking bath in river Ganges.
This day is celebrated as Lord Hanuman Jyanti and also celebrated as Narak chaudas or called small diwali. On this day take mud from the field after Hal of balad or tractor from the upper portion and revolve from the head and taking bath helps the person from the long journey of Yamloka.
On this day, lighting lamps can destroy tamasik energies. The day before Chaudas, fourteenth day of the fortnight, after 12 a.m. the atmosphere starts getting polluted with raja-tama frequencies, because on this day the Universe moves from the Chandra-nadi (or the Moon channel), into the Surya-nadi (or the Sun channel). This helps the tamasik energies in ‘Pataal’. The sound waves generated from ‘Pataal’ are created by heat generated from movement of particles loaded with raja-tama components. To neutralize the effect of these waves, one has to bathe early in the morning, light ghee lamps in earthen pots and ritualistically worship them. The lamps radiate waves of particles charged with the fire element, which helps to destroy the raja-tama laden particles in the environment. Due to this, raja-tama particles present in the cells of tamasik energies also melt away, which helps to destroy the protective sheath around the tamasik energies. Hence, a soul begins afresh to perform any auspicious activity. On this day tamasik energies get annihilated, in a way amounting to destruction of negative frequencies emanating from hell.
This day the houses are cleaned and fresh flowers are placed all around to adorn the home. A rangoli is drawn at the entrance of the home. Rangoli’s are intricate designs drawn with a mixture of rice flour and water. They are created for all special occasion but during Diwali they are filled in with bright colors. At night, brilliant firework displays take place sometimes lasting for hours. Cites by rivers float little boats with lighted candles on the water. A dipa/diya is placed on every windowsill and on the steps of outside stairways.
Third Day of Diwali (Deepavali / Laxmi Pujan) Kamla Jayanti, Pittar Pujan,Kuber Puja,Maha Lakshmi Pujan and Deep Mala) – 19th October, 2017)
This day is celebrated as Diwali or Deepavali. It is celebrated when Sun enter in second course of Libra. Swati is Nakshatra of Rahu and it is slow star like Saturn Libra is rashi of Venus and Venus is star of wealth and comforts represents of the balance of scale. Sun is called the King of stars.
Diwali or Deepavali is celebrated on the thirteen lunar day of Krishan Paksha (dark fortnight) Amavasya (Auspicious day) of Hindu calendar month Ashwin.
- Lord Vishnu rescued Goddes Lakshmi on this very day in his fifth incarnation as Vaman Avtaara rescued Lakshmi from the prison of King Bali-Reason of worshipping Ma Lakshmi on Diwali or Deepavali.
- Birthday of Ma Lakshmi:- The goddess of wealth,Lakshmi incarnated on the New Moon day (Amasvaya) of the kartik month during the churning of the ocean.
- Lord Krishna incarnation of Lord Vishnu on the day preceding Diwali killed the demon called King Narkaasur and rescued thousand of women from the captivity-the celebrations of this freedom went for two days including Diwali or Deepavali a festival of victory of good over evils.
- The return of Pandavs-According to great epic Mahabharata it was kartik Amavasya when Pandavas appeared from the twelve year of banishment as a result of their defeat from Kauravas in the game of gambling Dice-the day from then is celebrated by lighting the earthern lamps as love for the return of Pandavas.
- The victory of Lord Rama incarnation of Lord Vishnu according to epic Ramayana it was new moon day of Kartik When Lord returned with her wife Ma Sita and brother Laxman to Ayodhya after killing Ravana on conquering Lanka and releasing Ma Sita from the captivity of Ravana. From then is celebrated by lighting the earthern lamps as welcome to them onwards till today.
- Special day for Sikhs: Sikh Guru Amar Dass institulunalized Diwali as a red letter day all the Sikh Sangat gathered for receiving Guru blessings. In 1577 the foundation stone of Golden temple in Amritsar was laid on this day Diwali or deepavali. In 1619 the sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind who was help in the captivity bu Mughal emperor Jhangir was relased from the Gwalior along with other Kings.
- Jain celebrates this day Mahavir Tirthankar considered to be founder of modern Jainism and attained his Nirvana on Diwali day or deepavali.
- Arya samajis celebrate this day as death anniversary of Swami dayanand Saraswati-they celebrate this day as Shardiya Nav Shasyesti. Maharishi Dayananda one of the reformer of Hinduism.
Fourth Day of Diwali (Nutan Samat / Bali –( Pratipada),AanKut-Govardhan Puja, Raja Bali Puja)-20th October, 2017)
It is said that negative energy was created on the day of Bali-pratipada. On this day, proportion of ‘Yama’ and ‘Tiryak’ frequencies is more in the Universe. When these frequencies come together, the negative energies under the control of King Bali create more negative energies. On this day, ritualistic worship of King Bali is done where an offering (Naivaidya) is made to him to satisfy his thirst and hunger. This keeps King Bali and the negative energies under his control, happy for the whole year in ‘Paatal’, and not cause any trouble to lives on earth. With this, the Jiva (soul) on earth is able to practice spirituality without obstacles. Hindu Dharma gives as much importance to this day of appeasing the negative energies as any other important festival. Hence, it will be clear how impartial and tolerant the Hindu Dharma is, as it thinks of righteous along with unrighteous
This day is known and famous in the name of Govardhan Puja and festival of Aankoot. Many thousands of years ago, Lord Krishna caused the people of Vraja to perform Goverdhan Pooja. From then on, every year Hindus worship Goverdhan to honour that first Pooja done by the people of Vraja. This day cows are worshipped, the Aakriti like cow is prepared from the cow dung and is worshipped by people and parsad is distributed amongst all and God blesses and provide money, wealth, comforts and all luxuries to the worshippers.
Fifth Day of Diwali – (Bhai Dooj / Yama Ditya,Vishvakarma Puja) – 21st October, 2017)
On this day, Yamadev (deity of Death) has full control over hell and is in charge of the region of Death (Mrityulok). He also prevents negative energies from moving in various planes (lokas) and keeps a check on them. On this day, waves emanating from Yamadev travel through various layers of hell and keep matters in place. This keeps the effect of negative energies from hell to a minimum on this day.Hence, on this day, ritualistic worship.
This day is also celebrated as Bhai Dooj. On this day brothers and sisters meet to express love and affection, Yama lord of Death visited his sister Yami( river Yamuna):- Yami welcomed Yama with an aarti they had a feast together. Yama gave gift to her sister. On this day the sister’s worship for the long and happy life of their brother and sister get all comforts and gain good luck on this day.
My next set of articles will highlight Pooja vidhi for Diwali, different mantras to be recited on these auspicious days.
