Hans Abrahamsen, Let me tell you. Andris Nelsons, director Barbara Hannigan, soprano

It was Hannigan's idea to commission Abrahamsen to set passages from Griffiths' fascinating novel "Let Me Tell You," which is not only written in the voice of Ophelia but uses only the 483 different words Ophelia utters in "Hamlet."
Abrahamsen, with his transparent textures and slippery tonality, was the perfect composer for this project. "Let Me Tell You" had its premiere in December 2013 with the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Andris Nelsons, who is now the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piece just won this year's $100,000 Grawemeyer prize, perhaps the most prestigious award for contemporary music.
Hannigan has now already sung it in a dozen venues in Europe and North America, a rarity for such a new work. In February, I heard it with the Boston Symphony led by Nelsons. And at the end, after a full minute of stunned silence, it got one of the most sustained ovations I've ever heard for a new piece. At a public symposium with the composer, the librettist and the illustrious Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt, Barbara Hannigan talked about meeting with Abrahamsen and how he asked her for a lesson in the history of vocal techniques that ended up lasting four hours.

Let me tell you Hans Abrahamsen – Ophelia resumes control
Hans Abrahamsen hopes to celebrate his 70th birthday in December 2022, but is already a central composer in NTR ZaterdagMatinee. On 29 January his Horn Concerto received its belated Dutch premiere; in May Asko|Schönberg will perform his trilogy Winternacht / Wald / Schnee and a month later his opera The Snow Queen, based on an Andersen fairy-tale, will get its first performance in The…

Look, I don’t like to throw around the word ‘butthead’ often. If you call everyone a butthead, it kind of loses its impact. But I can say without hesitation that Hans is being a real dick.

Crown Princess Mary’s black lace dress→ Worn at the Léonie Sonning Music Prize ceremony on 26th April 2019
Where? Crown Princess Mary joined her husband Frederik for the 2019 Léonie Sonning Music Prize ceremony honouring composer Hans Abrahamsen. The Prize was created in 1965 in honour of Léonie’s late husband, Danish editor and author Carl Johan Sonning. The annual ceremony awards a music prize to an internationally recognised composer, musician, conductor or singer.
What she wore: A little black dress is always going to be a fashion staple. Mary brought back a black lace Dolce & Gabbana dress previously worn during a trip to Italy in November 2018. The figure hugging look is professional but still feminine and youthful.
Copycat: Mary’s dress is still available here, but it’s selling for a whopping $2500 (£1850). If you can’t quite stretch to that in your budget but still want to channel Mary’s style I’ve identified a copycat from a brand she often wears, H&M. They’re selling a short, fitted lace dress which mimics Mary’s mix of a modest fabric and statement silhouette. Best part is it’s available for less than 1% of the cost of Mary’s! You can snap it up now for $18.99 (£15)
