Don't worry, I have more pretzel lore today. Pretzels Plus is a defunct chain of pretzel bakeries that originated in Hanover PA in 1991. Brad Eline, a real estate agent, decided to open his own business after eating from a pretzel stand in Lancaster. He claimed to try out some 500 recipes before settling on the right pretzel mix for his business. The recipe was kept under lock & key, with ingredients trucked in from different suppliers, known only to Eline and the guy who mixed the ingredients together for him. The original location was 13 Carlisle St. in Hanover, which sold 497 pretzels in its first day.

In 2004, Pretzels Plus had 25 franchises in 7 states - Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Most of the locations were in malls and Walmart Supercenters. They served a pizza with pretzel crust called the Pretzelizza, pretzel dogs, an M&M pretzel, crispy caramel crunch and chewy chocolate nut pretzels, sour cream & onion pretzels, garlic pretzels, cinnamon sugar pretzel sticks, cinnamon raisin pretzels, sandwiches on pretzel rolls. In 2005, they opened their first international location in Romania - the first pretzel store ever in the country. But at the same time, Eline acknowledged a problem: the US was saturated in pretzel stores. Every mall had at least one. Perhaps this, along with the decline of many of these malls, is why Pretzels Plus started closing.

In 2019, Eline made a new concept called Pretzel Pizza Cafe & Creamery in Hanover, specializing in pretzel sandwiches, pretzel pizzas & calzones, pretzel Stromboli, pretzel wraps, pretzel bowl soup, chili cheese pretzel dogs, 36 flavors of ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies, and floats. The Cafe closed in 2023.

Pictured at the top is Pretzels Plus at Palmer Park Mall, the last of the whole chain, and a pretzel and slushy I ate from there once. I've eaten there a hundred times, and I'm glad it managed to survive. It was probably lucky to be located at a mall that isn't dying but also isn't big enough for a second pretzel place to want to move in.
