Portsmouth
Portsmouth, NH is the epitome of a quintessential New England town. It’s got the historical charm, sea breeze, social atmosphere and quaint center that draws road trippers from all over. The main street is lined with a wide variety of adorable little shops and cafes. We visited on the first nice sunny day after a rainy streak and the town was loving the return of the good weather! Let’s take a little walk!
 Parking:
Set your GPS for Market Street and you’ll find that a lot of the side streets point you in the direction of the Hanover Street Parking Garage. This is the easiest and most central place to park unless you’re lucky enough to find street parking on Market Street or Congress Street.
Food:
Poco’s Bow Street Cantina
We weren’t the only ones seeking a restaurant with an outdoor patio on this beautiful day, but we only had a 30 minute wait for a table on the 1st floor deck of Poco’s Bow Street Cantina. The Cantina sits right beside the water, just off of Market Street. We started our visit in this city with a couple of margaritas and a tray of nachos by the water. Does it get any better than that?
 5 Thai Bistro
This is the best Thai food in the area! It may be the only Thai restaurant in the area, but it’s definitely a good one! The little bistro has a large menu, fast service and great food. They’ll have you fed and on your way in the time that it takes to finish your first Thai Iced Tea.
 Kilwins
Because when you ride shotgun with me, there’s always desert involved. You can smell Kilwin’s from about 10 feet away from the door and the scent of it will draw you in. This is your typical ice cream, candy, fudge, anything sweet and delicious type of shop and it does not disappoint! Their salted caramel chocolate fudge made the long drive home super sweet!
 The Friendly Toast
We had every intention of eating at The Friendly Toast when we arrived in Portsmouth. Every blog and Trip Advisor search has pointed me in that direction. We would have gotten there if we hadn’t been distracted by Poco’s boasted nachos. This is my return trip callout- because it will most certainly be on my itinerary if I make it back to Portsmouth!
 Flatbread Company
I’ve eaten at a few of their other locations, but this is a restaurant that never lets you down! Get pizza- any kind of pizza.
 La Belle Winery
This wine tasting bar is a great stop off the busy street and a great chance to taste some local wines!
 Stop, Shop and Stroll:
As I mentioned, Market Street and Congress Street are the center of Portsmouth activity. There are dozens of cute shops up and down the street to pop in and out of. Here are some of my favorites!
 Pretty Little Things – An adorably chic clothing boutique
Gus & Ruby’s Letterpress – Every Type A person’s dream. This little shop has all the pens, planners and organizational materials you could ever wish for.
Fat Face – One of the only international chains you find on this street, Fat Face is one of my favorite European clothing shops.
Pretty Poppy – A sweet and trendy accessories boutique where virtually anything can be monogramed in-house!
Serendipity – A clothing and accessories boutique with a major focus on Free People.
Stonewall Kitchen – Yes, the place that makes your favorite pretzel dips and preserves.
Book and Bar – There’s books and there’s a bar. What more do you need?
 Adventures and Misadventures: Stranded on the dock of the bay
Sitting on the dock next to Poco’s you’ll find the Moran Towing of New Hampshire. They have a large office building on site and a tug boat docked out front and a high gate that goes around the entire parking lot. Take it from me, do not wander into this parking lot just as a truck is driving away from it! Yes, the photos are adorable and yes you will feel very cool standing with the tug boat, but there’s one small detail that you missed on the way in: the gates closed behind that truck and now you’re trapped inside. Goode thing you brought Lindsey of Life Is Pretty Goode along to save the day!

Among all the businesses that the Branson Entrepreneurial Centre interacts with, farming is rarely encountered. However, when you blend greenhouse technology, agricultural consultancy and ecotourism, it sounds more like a Branson type of business. And so Alvin Murray, third-generation farmer, is seeking to build a new awareness about modern farming that provides exotic produce not normally found in Jamaica, while educating and entertaining visitors.

Dennise Williams (DW): Geothermal cooling. Sterilising soil by steaming before you plant in it. These are foreign concepts to many of us in the urban setting. Yet this is how your family business thrives. Tell us about your family business. How long have you been in operation and what is your main product?
Alvin Murray (AM): A&H Intercrop was incorporated in 1992 and produced coffee and bananas for export. After those industries pretty much died, the company sprang back to life in 2015 with the supply and construction of greenhouses as well as management and workforce training in agriculture. While most may say our main product is greenhouses, I’d say it is education.
DW: What is driving the demand for produce such as mushrooms and strawberries? Is it supermarkets or hotels? And how can farmers use greenhouse technology to meet the demand?
AM: The demand is driven mainly by hotels and restaurants. Greenhouse technology can help meet this demand by providing the ideal growth environment, providing better yields.
DW: You are a graphic artist by training. Your family’s background is agriculture. Yet you are using the Branson Centre to help build your family’s business. How does that work?
AM: We are a family of farmers and educators, offering products and services that smaller Caribbean islands and local farmers need. What we lacked was the entrepreneurial prowess to take what we have to the next level. We lacked expertise in the agro-tourism project we are focusing on at the moment, and through the Branson Centre we’ll be able to access a wealth of knowledge via their coaches and advisors.
DW: Tell us about the greenhouse consulting that your family does.
AM: We’re not limited to greenhouse consulting; we do agricultural consulting as well. If you don’t know what can be grown on your land or what is best for your particular microclimate, that’s where we can help. What particular challenges are you facing? We can provide experts in many areas with vast amounts of experience to train your workforce.
DW:Â Now let us focus on ecotourism. What are your plans to get into this space?
AM: We are currently developing 15.7 acres in Hanover for agro/ecotourism, just 30 minutes from Montego Bay. The property is partially surrounded by the Great River, and we offer a relaxing getaway where visitors will be able to enjoy the enhanced environment to include campsite, small limestone cave, boating, fishing, and educational tours depicting the production and profitability of Jamaican crops (cassava, sugarcane, coffee, bananas, cocoa, ginger, dasheen, yams, sweet potatoes etc.) since the age of the Tainos.
DW: In Jamaica, agriculture is characterised by a 60-year-old man doing back-breaking work in the hot sun. What should young people understand about agriculture and the technology that is changing the industry?
AM: So much has changed. People want clean, healthy food more than ever nowadays, and you can make this happen with technology and some knowledge. There are farmers in cities like New York growing produce on rooftops or inside climate-controlled containers. No matter where you are, you can grow good food with the correct knowledge.
DW: If I have a little garden space in Kingston or Portmore and I want to grow what I eat, how can greenhouse technology work for me?
AM: Well, that depends on what you want to grow. If it’s a herb garden or vegetables, the solution may be hydroponics, aeroponics or even a small mushroom house. It’s easy with the know-how.
