From Above, Hannah Hoch
Three of my favorite pieces by Hannah Hoch. She is my favorite collage artist-- the way she uses muted colors and her choice in images to put in embody simplicity and purpose. I enjoy the trippy feeling I get every time I look at her work, and I never seem to get bored. It all seems new. I wonder how pieces like this would translate digitally/ made originally digitally.

COLLAGE ON VIEW
Elemental Singularities
Richard Poulin at Brian Marki Fine Art Gallery in Palm Springs, California, USA through 25 February 2020. Since the 1970s, Poulin has been inspired by the work of modernists and avant-garde artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Höch, and Joseph Cornell. Richard has said that “these ‘visual essays’ express my life’s passions and pains, joys and losses, and the fundamental aspects of spirit, soul, and being.” MORE

Kolaj Magazine, a full colour, print magazine, exists to show how the world of collage is rich, layered, and thick with complexity. By remixing history and culture, collage artists forge new thinking. To understand collage is to reshape one’s thinking of art history and redefine the canon of visual culture that informs the present.

Before Photoshop, the Dada artist Hannah Höch created impressive works of photomontage with scissors and glue. In her hands, people’s heads could be cut off, arms and feet chopped and replaced with something else, eyes enlarged, and words and bodies distorted. The artist’s wonderful sense of humor can be sensed in her shrewdly balanced compositions. To Höch, photomontage was a vital way to express her political and social concerns as well.
Höch was a bisexual woman whose work echoed the anti-art sentiment and criticized the Weimar politics openly, and thus deemed “degenerate art” by the Nazi. From 1939, she left Berlin and lived in a small garden house in a remote area on the outskirts of the city.
We missed her birthday on November 1st, but we wanted to wish her a belated Happy Birthday.

Hannah Höch - 'Bouquet of Eyes' 1930 👁👁👁 "Hannah Höch (German: [hœç]; November 1, 1889 – May 31, 1978) was a German Dada artist. She is best known for her work of the Weimar period, when she was one of the originators of photomontage. Photomontage, or fotomontage, is a type of collage in which the pasted items are actual photographs, or photographic reproductions pulled from the press and other widely produced media. Höch's work was intended to dismantle the fable and dichotomy that existed in the concept of the “New Woman'': an energetic, professional, and androgynous woman, who is ready to take her place as man's equal. Her interest in the topic was in how the dichotomy was structured, as well as in who structures social roles. Other key themes in Höch's works were androgyny, political discourse, and shifting gender roles. These themes all interacted to create a feminist discourse surrounding Höch's works, which encouraged the liberation and agency of women in Weimar Germany and today." #dadaism #arthistory #protest #dada #photomontage #HannahHoch #Art #feminism
