I have clicked on the horrid website so you don’t have to.
First article, last year:
https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/18077960/benedict-cumberbatch-4million-castle-fronted-mansion/
Exclusive Benedict Cumberbatch eyes up £4million, castle-fronted mansion with 300-acre farm in south-west Laura Armstrong, Hannah Hope Published: 21:46, 26 Mar 2022 Updated: 9:49, 28 Mar 2022
NOMINEE Benedict Cumberbatch has been eyeing up a real-life role as a rancher – like his character in The Power Of The Dog.
The British actor is up for the Best Actor Oscar award on Sunday for his portrayal of troubled cowboy Phil Burbank in the blockbuster.
And we can reveal he’s showing an interest in a £4million, castle-fronted mansion.
The historic property has more than 300 acres of land attached to it and even boasts its own organic farm.
Benedict, who owns a home in London, where he lives with theatre director wife Sophie Hunter and their three children, is said to have been thinking of buying a bolthole in the South West for some time.
And a source in the village said: “Everyone around here is talking about it.
“Benedict has been seen here a few times in the last few months, either in the village or the market town nearby.
“He’s been wanting to buy a place down here for a while.
“If he buys the house it will be fantastic for the area and give everyone a real boost.
“The manor house and land have certainly seen better days so it would be brilliant if he injects some love into the property.”
If The Imitation Game actor buys the mansion, he will be able to relax in its extensive library and store vintage wines in the sprawling cellar.
There is also a swimming pool, cider orchard and land for grazing cattle — just like his film character Phil did.
He will also be able to bring his own features to the manor as it comes with extensive planning permission.
Benedict will be battling it out for the Best Actor award at the ceremony with Will Smith, Javier Bardem, Andrew Garfield and Denzel Washington.
And he is certainly a formidable contender after the movie won 12 nominations from the Academy.
Perhaps his recent house hunting is an optimistic bid to secure a grander location for his gong.
This weekend’s follow up and confirmation:

EXCLUSIVE
BEN'S NEW HOLME Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch buys £8.1m mansion with 355 acres of land Michael Hamilton Published: 21:50, 14 Jan 2023 Updated: 21:50, 14 Jan 2023
SHERLOCK star Benedict Cumberbatch has bought an £8.1million mansion with 355 acres of land.
The actor and wife Sophie Hunter agreed a deal on the country spread last May after eyeing it for two years.
Sources say the Somerset estate, which has an organic farm and cider orchard, is “totally private”.
The historic house has a Grade-II listed lodge built to impress King George III, who was a regular visitor in the late 1700s.
Cumberbatch, 46, distantly related to Richard III, also has a Gothic–style entrance arch, library and wine cellar to show off.
A source said: “It’s really lovely, secluded and peaceful, perfect for getting away from it all.
“Although the house is historic, it has all mod-cons.
“Locals in the nearby village know about the purchase.
“Everyone is excited about their new neighbours.”
Cumberbatch, who played Holmes in Sherlock, also has a home in London with theatre director, playwright and actress Sophie, 44.
The property was sold by estate agents Savills.
The Land Registry has only recently released the documents.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conclusion, Benedict saw a property he liked in Somerset while he was there filming some scenes for DSITMOM. Just a guess.
23 books for 2023
Thanks to @booksnpictures <3 I came up with my list of 23 books I plan to read in 2023. To be fair, I am more of a mood reader and I prefer to pick my next read according to that. So let’s see if I’ll get through it. Maybe it would be more appropriate to call the list something like 23 (or more) books that have been sitting on my shelf, patiently waiting for their time.
Anyway, here they are:
1. Deutsch – Karl-Heinz Göttert
2. Schnee – Orhan Pamuk (orig. Kar)
3. Die Überlebenden – Axel Schulman (orig. Överleverna) ✔️
4. In deinen Händen – Inês Pedrosa (orig. Nas Tuas Mãos)
8. Goethe ruft an – John von Düffel
9. North of here – Laurel Saville
10.* Maya (orig. Maya) or Slottet i Pyrenæerne (orig. Slottet i Pyreneerne) or Der Geschichtenverkäufer (orig. Sirkusdirektørens datter) or Das Leben ist kurz (orig. Vita brevis) or Durch einen Spiegel, in einem dunklen Wort (orig. I et speil, i et gåte) or Das Kartengeheimnis (orig. Kabalmysteriet) – Jostein Gaarder
11. Hans Christian Andersen Kopenhagen – Ulrich Sonnenberg ✔️
12. The Heart Goes Last – Margaret Atwood
13. Der Meister und Margarita – Michail Bulgakow (orig. Master i Margarita)
14. Drachenläufer – Khaled Hosseini (orig. The Kite Runner)
15. Die rote Antilope – Henning Mankell (orig. Vindens son)
16. Das geheime Leben der Bäume – Peter Wohlleben
17. Zurück zur Realität – Werner Große
18.* Homo Deus. A Brief History of Tomorrow or 21 Lektionen für das 21. Jahrhundert (orig. 21 Lessons for the 21. Century) or Sapiens. Et kort historie om menneskeheden (orig. A Short History of Humankind) – Yuval Noah Harari
19. Kurze Antworten auf große Fragen – Stephen Hawking (orig. Brief Answers to the Big Questions)
20. Wie ich eines schönen Morgens im April das 100%ige Mädchen sah – Haruki Murakami
21. Das Leuchten der Rentiere – Ann-Helén Laestadius (orig. Stöld) ✔️
22. In Every Mirror She’s Black – Lola Akinmade Åkerström ✔️
23. Schloss aus Glas – Jeanette Walls (orig. The Glass Castle) ✔️
* I couldn’t decide which one to put on the list. All I know is that somehow I happened to accumulate this stack of books and that I really want to read more by those authors.
Not on✨the list✨:
- Hannahs Lied - Maren Uthaug (orig. Hvor der er fugle) ✔️
No kiss hard frost but the sun out raises F to 49° now at 9 25 am had Mr. Husband - about what lengths to cut A-‘s 4 larches in (from Spa house wood - Frank to go for them this morning and William K- cutting them down now) - Richard Woodhead here and A- paid his bill for work done at the Travellers Inn - the remaining part (from the drawing room door to the window) of the hall wainscot taken down this morning - Bligh and his man taking down the ceiling of the passage over the gallery to the north chamber and red room - out - about - Robert and Joseph Mann here - told Robert to bring his men at noon - Joseph has levelled at Little marsh - 20 yards of level - drift must be 110 yards long - the run out into the lane - told him to think about it - Robert’s men thought it hard to have broken time when Ingham was here - yes! true - I- has brought 5 men! one additional because cannot work at his job at H-x in consequence of the hard frost - so came to pull down the old brewhouse! and make work as they could here! - said he Ingham must send off all but 2 who might Thomas the York joiner to set the centres of the groined dry wall arching - came in to breakfast at 10 - A- did her French - breakfast and wrote the above of today till 10 50 - then had William Green with a long bill = £9.1.0 for what he had laid out in the 2 cottages in one he lives in before I bought them - said I had nothing to do with this but would send Mr. SW- to value the fixtures - WG- will get his daughter out of the house and be out of it himself and go into the bridge end cottage now occupied by Joseph Smith before Xmas - poor William afraid of not having enough left for himself if he lives long - only £20 left of my purchase money of the 2 bridge end cottages and he has £10 in the house - said I would do nothing for him so long as he was where he was (with his daughter) but he was not likely to starve - I would not see him starve - out about - till 12 20 then had Oddy in my study - paid her her quarters’ wages up to 12 next month and gave her £10 - said nobody was mentioned in my aunt’s will that she Oddy had witnessed but I had great pleasure in giving her the ten pounds which I was sure my aunt would wish her to have and that we (A- and I) should always be glad to see her - she seemed very well satisfied - this and writing the last ten lines took me till 12 55 - then wrote the following note and sent it along with my aunts black shawl (that A- and I bought at Lyons in 1834) to ‘Mrs. Veitch’ in a parcel directed ‘Mrs. Veitch Saville-Row’ by John Booth at 2 ½ pm - ‘Shibden Hall Monday 31 October 1836. My dear Mrs. Veitch - I was much obliged to you for your kind note of inquiry, and should have thanked you for it sooner, and sooner offered you my condolence on the death of your sister, had I not waited to send you some remembrance of my aunt, which I could not do before, as nothing was sufficiently settled till Saturday afternoon - I am anxious for you to feel assured of having been the 1st I have thought of, as my aunt’s old friend and oldest acquaintance - I wish I could have sent you something of greater intrinsic value; but, during my aunts very long illness, she had given away her trinkets, and neglected her wardrobe - I trust, however, that you will think only of the intention - I shall be glad to hear a good account of yourself, and shall not fail to make my inquiries in person, the 1st time of my being in H-x - If you will let me know the size of whatever finger you would best like a ring to fit, it shall be ordered accordingly - Miss Walker begs me to give her kind regards - Believe me, my dear Mrs. Veicth very truly yours A. Lister’ - Oddy told me this morning that the old cook, çidevant Hannah Pearson, had been hurt that she had not gloves and biscuits had mentioned it to Mrs. Veitch who told her, she (Mrs. V-) had not had any! I explained to O- why Mrs. V- was not a person to have gloves and biscuits - all this seemed elicited from O- by my telling her I was going to send the shawl to Mrs. V- said I had been anxious to leave O- all I could but had taken what I had taken for A- and myself and others to whom I wished to give something that had belonged to my aunt - thinking I had not clearly much explained that O- was to consider the ten pounds as from my aunt saw her for a [minute] again (after her dinner) and said that tho’ nobody was named in my aunt’s will, I knew her wishes, and begged O- to consider the £10 as from my aunt - wrote and sent by John B- note to ‘Mrs. Mackean Yorkshire district Bank Halifax’ enclosing 2 hundred pounds Bank of Manchester notes (A-‘s that she received from SW- last Saturday week from her aunt for the Radcliffe purchase - the money called in from Rawsons’ bank - they sent £500 in their own notes! and £200 in the 2 above named Manchester joint stock bank notes and £1800 in B. of E. - when A- found fault with Mr. SW- for not bringing the whole sum in B. of E. he said R- had no more - A- sent £400 of their own notes by SW- on Saturday and got B. of E. for them) - and enclosing also a check for £50 - desiring to be sent back by the bearer £150 in 2 or 3 B. of E. and the rest in their own notes - John B- off at 2 ½ - would leave the note at the bank and the parcel at Mrs. V-‘s and then go for beer (Mr. Charles Priestley’s brewery near Sowerby Bridge - ie. near the Causey) had Brays’ money collector for lime £7+ - said I would send the money tonight or tomorrow night -  had not enough at this moment – did not like to send gold – nor A- nor I have notes – then till  3 wrote the last 2 ½ lines of the last p. and so far of this - then finished rough copy of letter to Lady Stuart and out at 3 35 to 6 - no! sometime with A- and out at 4 to near 6 - with Mark Hepworth levelling after the Northgate carts in front of the house - then at the dry wall arching - Charles and James Howarth in the morning sawing up the 4 planks got on Friday at Bradleys’ for railing off the old orchard - in the afternoon and had Robert Mann and Sam Booth propping the 2 dry wall arches - Robert Mann’s men Jack Green and Joseph Booth at moving the clay from the old orchard wall to near the rocks in the afternoon - only one of Ingham’s men here after 10 am then
SH:7/ML/E/19/0136
morning - Mr. Husband grieved when he came this evening to see his work propped - thought there was no fear of its falling, but blamed the pounding - pounding down the clay lay on the top of the arches to make them water proof - poor Robert Mann on hearing this had quietly walked off - had Mark Hepworth - going to Leeds tomorrow on his own account and is therefore to bring back the new brewing copper - gave him the bill and £14.12.6 (in gold except the 2/6) to pay it with - dressed - at 6 wrote 3 ½ pp. to ‘The honourable Lady Stuart Whitehall London’ (sent tonight) - thanks for her so kind letter - very good of her to give me my choice between Whitehall and the Lodge for paying her my visit - choose the former for a week or ten days, and ask to have ‘my own way’ - ask if her small house adjoining is at liberty - and for my 2 servants to eat with hers - A- and I whom I should be so glad to present to Lady S- could manage very well - if the small house at liberty 1 room for her and me, and room enough for the servants - if not at liberty ‘what shall I do? If Lady S- listens to my little plan (to be explained so that she cannot find much fault) trust she will not repent her kindness and wish us in Dover street - dinner at 7 - coffee upstairs - A- read her French - then counted out the £2500 to make what up Mr. Watson brings for the Radcliffe purchase - I ½ asleep on the sofa - then counted over the money till came to my study at 10 ¼ and wrote the last 18 lines till 10 35 at which hour F31 ½° - fine day - frosty in the morning but after the sun got out a thaw which made my dry-arch outside wall bulge out - frost again this evening - then till 11 40 making Sundry memoranda
The Beer Flood event of 1814 got me curious, so here is all about it via Wikipedia:
“At around 4:30 in the afternoon of 17 October 1814, George Crick, Meux's storehouse clerk, saw that one of the 700-pound (320 kg) iron bands around a vat had slipped. The 22-foot (6.7 m) tall vessel was filled to within four inches of the top with 3,555 imperial barrels of ten-month-old porter, weighing approximately 32 long tons. As bands slipped off the vats two or three times a year, Crick was unconcerned. He told his supervisor about the problem, but was told "that no harm whatever would ensue". Crick was told to write a note to Mr Young, one of the partners of the brewery, to have it fixed later.
An hour after the hoop fell off, Crick was standing on a platform thirty feet (9.1 m) from the vat, holding the note to Mr. Young, when the vessel, with no indication, burst. The force of the liquid's release knocked the stopcock from a neighboring vat, which also began discharging its contents; several hogsheads of porter were destroyed, and their contents added to the flood. Between 128,000 and 323,000 imperial gallons were released. The force of the liquid destroyed the rear wall of the brewery; it was 25 feet (7.6 m) high and two and a half bricks thick. Some of the bricks from the back wall were knocked upwards, and fell onto the roofs of the houses in the nearby Great Russell Street.
A wave of porter some 15 feet (4.6 m) high swept into New Street, where it destroyed two houses and badly damaged two others. In one of the houses a four-year-old girl, Hannah Bamfield, was having tea with her mother and another child. The wave of beer swept the mother and the second child into the street; Hannah was killed. In the second destroyed house, a wake was being held by an Irish family for a two-year-old boy; Anne Saville, the boy's mother, and four other mourners (Mary Mulvey and her three-year-old son, Elizabeth Smith and Catherine Butler) were killed. Eleanor Cooper, a 14-year-old servant of the publican of the Tavistock Arms in Great Russell Street, died when she was buried under the brewery's collapsed wall while washing pots in the pub's yard. Another child, Sarah Bates, was found dead in another house in New Street. The land around the building was low-lying and flat. With insufficient drainage, the beer flowed into cellars, many of which were inhabited, and people were forced to climb on furniture to avoid drowning.
All those in the brewery survived, although three workmen had to be rescued from the rubble; the superintendent and one of the workers were taken to Middlesex Hospital, along with three others.”
Everything’s kicking off this February! Here’s a thank you gift : )
Logistical stuff/disclaimer: My former trading partner took two of these but was largely out of trading by then. I did all of the tracking, notes, and editing for them. There MIGHT be another copy of June 13, 2017, that exists, but these were all pretty much released by me.
Wicked - London - June 12, 2017
Willemijn Verkaik (Elphaba), Suzie Mathers (Glinda), James Darch (u/s Fiyero), Sarah McNicholas (Nessarose), Idriss Kargbo (Boq), Sue Kelvin (Madame Morrible), Mark Curry (The Wizard), Martin Ball (Doctor Dillamond)
My Notes: A bit more of a run-of-the-mill performance considering it was the start of the week and you can kinda hear it. Suzie is on top form as well, but iirc she would call out the next day.
Wicked - London - June 13, 2017
Willemijn Verkaik (Elphaba), Rosa O'Reilly (u/s Glinda), James Darch (u/s Fiyero), Sarah McNicholas (Nessarose), Idriss Kargbo (Boq), Sue Kelvin (Madame Morrible), Mark Curry (The Wizard), Martin Ball (Doctor Dillamond), Scott Monello, Freya Field, Claudia Kariuki, Will Lucas, Joseph Fletcher, David Gale, Sergio Giacomelli, Katy Hanna, Olivia Kate Holding, Aaron Jenkins, Ella Nonini, Julienne Schembri, Jessamy Stoddart, Joe Sleight, Joe Toland, Fraser Fraser, Alexandra Grierson
Notes: Rosa’s first performance with Willemijn.
My Notes: NOW THIS. One of the best performances I’ve ever heard. It’s also a better quality audio. :) I’ll let you find out everything she does yourself but I absolutely FREAKED OUT when I first heard this. This is the stuff you hear at final performances. IIRC the review I got was that it almost seemed like she was ‘trying harder to pull some of Rosa’s weight’ which I don’t think/know to be true, but that was the opinion. The things she does are just mindblowing. And it was a Tuesday!!!!
Wicked - London - February 14, 2017
Alice Fearn (s/b Elphaba), Suzie Mathers (Glinda), Oliver Savile (Fiyero), Sarah McNicholas (Nessarose), Martin Ball (u/s Wizard), Idriss Kargbo (Boq), Sue Kelvin (Mme Morrible), Scott Monello (u/s Dr. Dillamond/Witch's Father), James Darch, Kerry Enright, Joseph Fletcher, David Gale, Katy Hanna, Aaron Jenkins, Claudia Kariuki, Will Lucas, Chanel Mian, Ella Nonini, Rosa O'Reilly, Julienne Schembri, Joe Sleight, Helen Woolf, Fraser Fraser, Hannah Toy, Sasha Wareham
Notes: Alice’s first performance with Sue and Sarah. My (frei-und-schwerelos’) master.
My Notes: Of course I jinxed myself and this had to be the first show that Wil would call out on when she came back, but it was still mega good. Alice is different, and that’s a really good thing. Her Elphie is simmering, more frustrated, drier, and not as awkward. Suzie’s act 2 also almost made me cry, she absolutely excels at Glinda’s anguish in Thank Goodness. Plus, she goes nuts during Popular.
I made three mind maps to break down the project due to “being human” being too broad and they consisted of mind, anatomy/body and opinions/ beliefs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as the find maps I looked at a few artists; one of the artists I looked at was Hannah Reilly. I chose this artists as I knew I wanted to incorporate textiles and using a sewing machine in this project; her art work is done using a sewing machine to stitch over pieces of fabric to make a face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another artists I looked at was Jenny saville who done paintings. I chose to look at this artists as i knew I wanted to try out painting on fabric in this projects.
Evaluation for my Creative Realisation
I understood the brief of this project to be ‘launch yourself into it and use all your skills and learn new skills to do it!’ The ‘it’, namely the basis for my project, was entirely up to me. This was daunting at first. Then I went to Joe Mile’s “How Everything Effects Everything” lecture about the Baby Boomer generation. I was so interested in the analysis of the world at that point and the people living in it I decided to base my project off researching my generation, social history and current ongoing events. I also decided to make work on art history and mapping as well. To research social history, I needed to look back into my past, my generation’s past, world events and ongoing issues in the world. With such a broad scope of research it was hard to know where to start so I started with what I already knew, my history. From this I made massive digital mind maps, then turned each section of the mind map into a sketched symbol. I learnt how to use photoshop to make an A0 poster from the symbols, in a grid form. I got the idea to make a poster in Photoshop after I went to Photoshop workshop and thought “I’ll give this a go”. I had never used photoshop in my life so figuring out how to turn a collection of small-scale sketches into a large-scale grid on a poster took a lot of work. I needed several one-to-one tutorials but, in the end, I made the poster and I’m pleased with it. I found the emerging artist Rosie Clark’s work relevant to my poster as she makes infographics grids of symbols about what is going on in the world. I discovered her through going to a Coffee Lounge session. Graphic artist Christoph Niemann’s work relates to my infographics work and served as a huge inspiration to me as to how well infographics can be done. I used previous knowledge from my Foundation year to learn from Dada collage artist Hannah Hoch in my collage work.  I used my favourite artist Jenny Saville for reference when painting flesh in oil paints and used her quotes to structure the ending section of my project. I turned the felt tip-coloured symbols into 10cm diameter stickers which I stuck onto face masks then photographed people wearing, much in the style of the artist group Broken Fingaz. They base their work around current events and have been known to make stickers out of their colourful work too. I wanted to make the symbols into stickers to get them out into the world in a portable, easy form. I researched and illustrated my own brief history of art which I then sent off to a printer’s place to get printed into booklets. The glossy professional finish of my booklet was exactly why I wanted it printed. To turn something designed to be a book into a finished product of a book was rewarding.   During this project I joined weekly online life drawing classes. Then later I went to a life drawing class in the flesh where the model danced with hula hoops. I turned this into the basis for my final piece: a large-scale oil painting. I chose oil paints as they’re good for large scale pieces and I love its smooth texture and buttery viscosity. I had used oil paints in the past but enjoyed them so much I wanted to learn more about them. The final piece offered a learning curve as I had never painted oils onto wooden board before and I went to an oil painting workshop by a professional oil painter. I think I have been successful in this project for closely following the learning objectives. I have engaged myself creatively in response to the brief and I have produced work that evidences creativity and experimentation. However, this project is very broad. I looked into all the things that interest me in art: life drawing, oil painting, semiotics, mapping, art history etc. In the future after having seen how much work you can produce from just one topic; I think I will hone in the range of topics considerably for a more specific investigation. I am disappointed a public exhibition for the end of my Foundation Year was not possible due to Covid restrictions. In the exhibition I would have given viewers a symbol sticker each, stuck parts of my mind maps along the wall like an actual map, hung up my poster and oil painting and collage, passed out copies of my History of Art booklets and written in big letters across the walls quotes from Jenny Saville. Curating and presenting an exhibition is something I have never done and look forward to doing in the future.
Statement of Intent
Throughout this project I aim to conceptually explore body image and feminism through a sculptural approach to produce artwork of a professional standard. I aim to showcase my research of the male gaze and the impact this has on how woman view their own bodies as well as the pressure around fitting into impossible beauty standards to feel good enough.
What is the perfect body type?
Where does this come from?
How does this effect the female gaze from woman to woman?
I specifically want to express the vast range of body types through a visual approach within my work and will achieve this by exploring different sculptural techniques such as soft sculpture, plaster casting, clay, and acknowledging that I will discover my own methods throughout my development process. Some artists that will start off my creative thinking are Jenny Saville, Sarah Lucas, Hannah Wilke and Jeff Muhs. I have chosen to take inspiration from these artists as they all approach the subject of body image in a way that highlights the natural curves of woman and challenges the typical beauty stereotypes engrained within our society.
