Reiterating once again that Hank is Lawrence's Batman, but the funny thing is that while Lawrence will inevitably see Hank/Batman as his nemesis, Hank does not feel the same.

Hank is not in Gotham. He's not even in Boston, Lawrence's turf. He's in Georgia. And Lawrence isn't the only bad guy he's been harassing. Hank specifically is focusing his hacking efforts on organizations that have been revealed to be fraudulent in some way (exploiting their employees, involved in sweatshops, charities that skim funds, companies breaking trade or labor laws, etc.).

Hank has a whole portfolio of well-researched organizations that he's following and slowly building up evidence on or actually hacking in hopes of forcing them to cease operations.

In Lawrence's case, Hank was investigating Io, Lawrence's security firm when some rumors went around that there may be an internal security leak (via a local headline that ran for about 36 hours before Lawrence had it shut down)— upon realizing there's a back end loophole that allows Io's highest admin clearance to view any and all of Io's camera feeds, thus being able to see into any homes/businesses/government buildings they have contracts with; he had hoped to shut them down and virtually demand they fix it and be transparent about the loophole.

Hank doesn't currently realize the depths of Lawrence's crimes but the more he hacks into their systems, the more information he'll gain— eventually, he'll have access to Lawrence's home...where, of course, he will see some suspicious things. And Lawrence will attempt to see who the fuck is in his system!!!

In essence, if and when Hank manages to expose Lawrence, Lawrence will have it in his mind that this is his nemesis who has been spending countless hours trying to take him down specifically while Hank...truly doesn't even really know who he is. Like, yeah, he's the CEO of Io, but he...like, he does have other people to expose and he didn't even know you when he started. You're not special Lawrence.

I just think it's very funny how Lawrence keeps making nemesis' out of people who will never hate him as much as he hates them.

your post about grunts and disabilities aids got me thinking, so here's a dump of some disability related stuff I hc because you're cool and there NEEDS to be more disability rep in this fandom

Hank: selectively mute, uses sign language to communicate. HOH and missing an eye. autism and ASPD.

Sanford: also HOH due to his job and visually impaired after 12. gets a white cane after he gets his eyes fucked up. OCD.

Deimos: uses crutches on occasion because something fucking up during his cloning process caused him to be pretty frail and weak, at least at first. also keeps stim toys on him. auDHD.

Doc: definitely a cane user. has a severe mouth injury from his time at the AAHW, so he can really only drink liquids. his mask has a thing that automatically amplifies his voice since the injury makes it hard to talk. I also like to imagine either he or Hank have a prosthetic leg. SZPD.

Victor: I can't think of any disability aids he'd have, but he definitely has PPD (as in paranoid personality disorder, not postpartum depression,) and DID.

all of them would realistically have some kind of C-PTSD and chronic pain / chronic fatigue due to the lives they live

He’s a huge fuckin’ nerd and Hank’s definitely been realizing that throughout their time together. Connor is insatiable (in more ways than one *cough*); I’m imagining his eyes going all big and dilated like a cat’s when Hank starts teaching him something haha. He starts bringing in some old textbooks to read to him and practically sees his fishy lil brain light up

They could definitely learn sign language together!! Maybe Hank borrows a textbook or downloads an app on his phone and they both learn together 🥺 Opening up a world of communication between them, allowing Hank to finally really delve into Connor’s mind. There’s something special about Hank having learned how to read Connor (and vice versa, though to a lesser extent since Connor can understand a little bit of English) just through body language and vocalizations, but the opportunity to really get to know what Connor is thinking? Too great to pass up.

Once again anon you are so right. I think he even says that he doesn’t know how to work his phone at some point in the game?? Which is totally unbelievable as a millennial, lmao. Still, despite the Cage Writing, I can’t help but like that stupid car and its stupid old-fashioned owner. I do like the idea of Hank getting a completely tech-less car after Cole’s death, or maybe just having been pretty anti-technology in general even before that (evidenced by his interest in “real” books, or having a house that’s as void of technology as you can get). Maybe he’s always had a passion for old cars, or things with an older charm. Picturing a young Hank who likes tinkering with old models even though his friends tease him about it, sleeves rolled up and covered in engine grease…..him refusing to give up his car for a newer one even when it sputters and takes five minutes to start (not at all related to his inability to let things go…)

And then this shiny, new-fangled piece of cutting-edge technology rocks up on his doorstep and sends his world into a tailspin 😌

I think the reason people separate Machine!Connor and Deviant!Connor so much as characters is because they don’t actually understand his motivations in the story. They don’t separate Violent!Marcus and Pacifist!Marcus because his motivation doesn’t change, his means do. Same with Kara. But Connors motivation isn’t as clear as theirs is so people default to the difference being caring about the mission or not, when the mission isn’t his motivation. His motivation is self preservation. The desire to be needed and useful; to live. The only difference really being if he is selfish about his self preservation or empathetic. Every defining moment for Connor is rooted in empathy or apathy, does he prioritize his own survival or does he lend empathy to others understanding that they want to live too?

what do you consider the heart of californication? like really carries through the series & makes it compelling

thank you for this question, i really love it. to me, it's a number of things, starting with that the show cares deeply about hank and takes him seriously in a way that the culture doesn't. in a way, yes, he's their dog and pony show with the funny one-liners and the salacious pull. but the arc of the series is unequivocally aligned with him and his desires and his needs and his values.

hank wants to be with his family, wants to be better for them, wants to not let them down- and the show needs him to fail at all of those things. for the dog and pony of it all, for their viewership and for their thesis and for the food in their mouths, but it simultaneously feels bad that he is failing. simultaneously knows that this isn't what he wants, and that it's sad. and it can be as simple as a dream sequence or a look or a quiet final scene, but every single episode is ultimately going to remind you that everything you're laughing at is a loss.

which, like i said at the top, speaks to a level of respect that the show had for the character that is just gone in discussions of the series. they take the time to recognize that he is missing something. he is losing something and he is without everything that means anything to him, this is the cost. equally important, duchovny respects that character and understands the same.

i was listening to an interview last night (trish you heard this) where he was speaking with some podcast dudebros and one of the hosts said that he always wanted to be just like hank moody, and then he made some "bad decisions" and got there, and he doesn't like it. and duchovny said that every time people come up to him saying "i'm just like hank moody," he says "i'm sorry."

men watch and they want to be just like hank moody and women watch and they want to fuck hank moody so bad, and all of you miss what the source comprehends: that it's an irreparable deficit.

other than that, i feel like what roots that show is that it really isn't all that cynical. not in the way that it could be. and the show believes in hank.

there is a lot of kindness and hope (often false hope) that runs underneath most every relationship and interaction and dynamic in the series and i really really appreciate that about it. it's like in the pilot when hank is being mean and he wants marcy to yell at him and she just says "go home, honey. sleep it off. tomorrow's another day."

there's always a little bit of understanding and grace amongst the crazies and i think there's something really special about that
