i’ve been having a lot of trouble articulating how it feels to be trans in a “safe” state right now. the assuredness that my friends & i are as safe today as we were a year ago is evenly matched with the paranoia of day to day life i guess. i’ve never wanted to sacrifice my visibility—which is, to me, a responsibility born of my intersectional privilege that i feel very strongly driven to honor—out of fear. but i’ve been watching myself try to disappear from everything & most ppl’s lives, so idrk what to do other than share work like this right now. idk if this is a coherent thought.

if i have any point to make it’s that every stage of my transition has been joyous & invigorating & enlivening & has reaffirmed my commitment to living in a visibly trans body. my scars will never fade & nothing can make me invisible. this piece will continue for the duration of my life, & for as long after as my body is a body

8/16/2024, Boston, Massachusetts: I ended my voyage in the only way fitting, by getting a traditional handpoked tattoo from artist, boat builder, and tattooist Owen Payette McGarry, a master of his craft and a fount of knowledge of New England maritime folk traditions.

In addition to the 19th century Nantucket whaler I chose from his flash book, the other tattoos you can see in this photo are by Facundo "Faka" Cejas (the Peglar Papers eye), Laceyrea Barrett (the fish with legs), and Chelsea Rhea (the tailfin of a huge mermaid that takes up the other side of my arm).
