Honestly, i don't think i'll ever really know if the shattered realms was genuinely good or not, because before I could really get into Flamecaster, HAN DIED!
And that was not only traumatic to Ash, it was traumatic as hell for me too. I didn't give af about jenna and her childhood crush. I WAS MOURNING! And then I continued to mourn for the rest of Flamecaster-- which made the entire reading experience terrible.
Then by Dreamcaster, I was still mourning. Han--but in a different way bc Lyss' grief felt more respectful to Han in some ways-- and CAT BC SHE APPARENTLY DIED TOO??? And I was also disturbed by the Raimon 'hints' (I believe it's mostly Lyss' own paranoia about her mom moving on, but still DISTURBING)
By Stormcaster the grief about Han was settling down, but then I got angry bc it finally hit me that Raisa and Han (THE WHOLE REASON THAT I READ ALL FOUR BOOKS BC OF) would never get a happy ending together. History repeats itself, just like with hanalea and alger, which is terrible since Raisa stuck it to her family at the end of Crimson Crown about how she was LEARNING FROM THE PAST! and there were more references to raisa moving on and spending the rest of her life with someone else and that made angry too, bc she's a half of my otp! idc if he died, idc if it's healthy and realistic to move on, THEY HAD JUST GOTTEN MARRIED!
And finally, by the time Lyss and Ash finally reunited with Han, and it was confirmed that Raisa and Han were meeting up in the amulet and would continue to do so, DEATHCASTER WAS OVER! oh, and don't get me started on magret, bc by that point i was too emotionally numb to grieve over her.
this isn't anything against the books as a whole, it's just my explanation as to why I post about Shattered Realms as much. I've never attempted to read them again bc of the trauma from the first read through, and thinking too much about it makes me sad again.

Do you know any fictional characters that have been described as wolves?
I only know characters in nightshade, I did some digging but I cannot find anything
I suppose maybe queen Hanalea (? I think is her name?) from a seven realms series, because she is the gray wolf queen, but that doesnt really count now does it?
And the characters from nightshade ARE werewolves so does that really count either

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Seven Realms Series - Cinda Williams Chima Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Han Alister/Raisa ana'Marianna Characters: Han Alister, Raisa ana'Marianna Additional Tags: Touch-Starved, Touching, But not in a sexual way - Freeform Summary:
Ever since Mari and his mam died, Han has had this ache in his chest that bursts into flames whenever he was touched.
@i-love-all-books
-
The burning started a month after Mari and his mam was killed.
At first, the burn was just a dull ache in his chest, barely there and not, in Han’s opinion, worthy of note. It didn’t hurt that much and was very easily shoved to the back of his mind, and he kind of just assumed it was part of grief and the fact that he’s gotten his family killed. Most of the time, he just ignored it.
Until Bayar’s murder attempt.
After his near-lethal fall down the stairs, one of the higher students had practically dragged him to the infirmary to make sure he hadn’t broken anything important. The nurse had checked his wrists, his ribs, his skull, her bare hands prodding his skin-
The dull ache in his chest turned into fire that burned so agonizingly that he had almost shouted.
The fire took a while, nearly two hours, to finally dull back down to an ache, and once he wasn’t immobilized by the agony he’d instantly gone into the amulet to ask Alger what the heck was going on. Alger hadn’t known, he’d never heard anything like it, but he swore up and down that Han hadn’t been cursed. He didn’t know what was wrong with him, but he would have known if Han had been cursed.
Meaning that, whatever this was, Han would just have to deal with it until he found out what was wrong.
The next month was spent actively avoiding touch, which wound up being pretty hard once the other students began to like having him around. He dodged what touch he could and, when someone did touch him, he retreated to his room as soon as possible and spent the next few hours curled up on his bed, his pillow held against his chest in an iron grip. The other students gathered that he didn’t like touch fairly quickly, thank Hanalea, and that made it easier. He avoided touch like the plague, and the ache in his chest stayed just that- an ache.
Then Rebecca came along.
He realized, a bit too late, that their lessons in all things court would soon mean dancing lessons, and he tried everything he could to stall it, but it couldn’t be avoided forever. Not wanting to reveal whatever was wrong with him, Han reluctantly agreed to her dance lessons. He grabbed her hand (the fire lit,) wrapped an arm around her slim waist (it seared.) Her hand went to his shoulder and she moved close, not so close that their bodies were flush, but close enough for her to occasionally brush against his burning chest.
He’d thrown himself back, moving away from her so quickly that he tripped over the table and hit the ground hard. She’d rushed over, hand reached out to help him up, and he’d cringed away.
Her mouth had dropped open. He was pretty sure she had gotten the wrong idea, but she didn’t try to touch him again.
Their dance lessons were different, her telling him what to do, him trying it (without a partner,) and her correcting what he did wrong, all while she never touched him. He was glad she was being so considerate, but the memory of her touch lingered, coming after him in the late hours of the evening, lighting him on fire and keeping him from sleeping.
Hanalea, he wanted to dance with her again.
-
Months passed, a lot happened. Rebecca had revealed herself to be Raisa ana’Marianna, the princess. She was crowned, Fellsmarch was very nearly invaded, Han became High Wizard…
They began courting.
While he was happy, so incredibly happy, his problem came back. Unlike before, he couldn’t find a way to avoid touching her. He was her lover, they were supposed to hold hands and hug and kiss and all of that fun stuff, and he wanted to do that… But the one time she hugged him, the fire had become so bad that he’d nearly thrown himself across the room. She hadn’t said anything, but he could see her confusion. Worse, he could see just a bit of hurt.
He’d wanted to tell her, but what would he say? That he was cursed? That he was sick? He couldn’t explain what was going on when he didn’t even know! Han didn’t like not knowing.
Then, two weeks after the hug incident, he’d finally gotten an answer.
In a fit of desperation over not even being able to hold the hand of the woman he loved, he’d gone to the royal doctor. He’d explained everything. And she’d given him a diagnosis.
Touch starvation.
Somehow, hearing those two words made him feel even worse. He knew about starving for food, for water, for adventure and the like. But who had ever heard of being starved for touch? Hanalea’s bloody bones, that sounded pathetic.
According to the doctor, the only way to treat touch starvation was to get what you were starving for- touch (yeah, that was pretty obvious.) But if he were to do that, it would hurt. Only for a little bit, if the doctor was telling the truth, but still.
At the risk of sounding pathetic, he was really bloody tired of pain.
Still, the problem would only get worse as time went on and, try as he might, he couldn’t avoid touching Raisa forever. So, after a few days of agonizing over his decision and changing his mind nearly twenty times, he forced himself to tell Raisa everything.
-
“Rai?” He took a deep breath, and then another, and sat on her bed. She glanced over from her desk. “Can I talk to you?”
If only his old gang could see him now. The infamous Cuffs Allister, silver-tongued sweet-talker, reduced to fidgeting and staring at the carpet.
“Of course.” She walked over and sat next to him. Her hands twitched as if she wanted to take his, but she seemed to think better of it.
So he reached out and took them.
Her eyebrows raised and her eyes- her beautiful, beautiful eyes- widened. The fire exploded in his chest, burning so badly he clenched his teeth. “Han? What’s wrong?”
“I’mtouchstarved!” He blurted, trying to force it out before he could change his mind again. He expected a lot of things- for her to laugh, for her to judge him, for her to roll her eyes-
The one thing he didn’t expect was the relived smile that broke out across her face and her whisper of “Thank the gods.”
For once, Han Allister was completely thrown through a loop.
“Huh? He asked intelligently, eyebrows shooting up.
“I was afraid it was something bad.” She squeezed his hands tightly. “I thought that someone had hurt you.”
Oh… When he thought about it, it was pretty obvious she had come to that conclusion. If she had known he was touch-starved, he was pretty sure that she, Hanalea bless her, would instantly try to confront the problem. In a way, he was kind of glad she’d come to the wrong conclusion. It had given him the time he’d needed to accept that he’s had this problem. “I… I want it to get better, but I don’t know how.”
Yeah, that wasn’t entirely true, but he wasn’t sure how to ask for what he wanted- what he needed. Thankfully, she seemed to understand.
“We’ll start small if you want,” she said, squeezing his hands again.
“No… I… Can you…” Words, for once in his life, were failing him. He just couldn’t make himself ask for what he desperately needed.
Like always, Raisa understood. “Do you want me to hug you?”
“... Yes please.”
She let go of his hands and, moving slowly, wrapped her surprisingly strong arms around him. His body moved forward against his will, pressing against her as much as it could, and she responded by hugging him tighter.
To his surprise, the fire… well, it didn’t exactly disappear, but it dulled.
Hanalea, this felt incredible.
“Would you like to stay with me tonight?” She asked, rubbing circles between his shoulder blades.
He wasn’t sure he could make himself leave if he tried. “Gods, yes.”

Dark Crystal Book Recommendations!
So, I’ve had this thought for a while now, and since half the world is in quarantine right now, I figured now would be a good time as ever to post this.
Here are the books that I have personally read that I feel represents these characters best.
Deet --> The Reader by Traci Chee
Sefia knows what it means to survive. After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin’s been taken, or if she’s even alive. The only clue to both her aunt’s disappearance and her father’s murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book—a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed—and punish the people responsible.
Brea --> The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima
Times are hard in the mountain city of Fellsmarch. Reformed thief Han Alister will do almost anything to eke out a living for his family. The only thing of value he has is something he can't sell—the thick silver cuffs he's worn since birth. They're clearly magicked—as he grows, they grow, and he's never been able to get them off. One day, Han and his clan friend, Dancer, confront three young wizards setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea. Han takes an amulet from Micah Bayar, son of the High Wizard, to keep him from using it against them. Soon Han learns that the amulet has an evil history—it once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago. With a magical piece that powerful at stake, Han knows that the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back. Meanwhile, Raisa ana'Marianna, princess heir of the Fells, has her own battles to fight. She's just returned to court after three years of freedom in the mountains—riding, hunting, and working the famous clan markets. Raisa wants to be more than an ornament in a glittering cage. She aspires to be like Hanalea—the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. But her mother has other plans for her...
Rian --> Red Rising by Peirce Brown
"I live for the dream that my children will be born free," she says. "That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them." "I live for you," I say sadly. Eo kisses my cheek. "Then you must live for more." Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies... even if it means he has to become one of them to do so
Seladon --> Heartless by Marrisa Meyer
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen. Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans
Naia --> Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever. In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It’s a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations. But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston’s School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose. But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies. And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.
Gurjin and Kylan --> The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
@Jenskira would be happy to see her raven sons on this list.
“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.” It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.
Tavra and Onica --> Seafire by Natalie C Parker.
After her family is killed by corrupt warlord Aric Athair and his bloodthirsty army of Bullets, Caledonia Styx is left to chart her own course on the dangerous and deadly seas. She captains her ship, the Mors Navis, with a crew of girls and women just like her, who have lost their families and homes because of Aric and his men. The crew has one mission: stay alive, and take down Aric's armed and armored fleet. But when Caledonia's best friend and second-in-command barely survives an attack thanks to help from a Bullet looking to defect, Caledonia finds herself questioning whether to let him join their crew. Is this boy the key to taking down Aric Athair once and for all . . . or will he threaten everything the women of the Mors Navis have worked for?

Because of the update day getting postponed, I thought I should give you guys a small exerpt of the next chapter. Sorry for it being so small, anything more than this would spoil big things for you guys.
Lyss strode down the halls, barely having to think about the route she was taking anymore. She could let her body go on autopilot while she delved into the deepest parts of her mind.
Her older sister, Hanalea, had left behind a centuries old legacy that she was supposed to have. It was never meant to belong to Lyss. And then suddenly it was. Hana was gone, and in her place was a void difficult to fill, if not impossible.
And Lyss was the only one who could take up what she left behind. She may not have been able to fill that void, but she was damn well going to try to follow her sister’s example.
Hope you all like the chapter when it comes out!! Thank you for your patience, guys.

The Demon King Chapters 3-6
05/25/24
Chapter Three:
First Willo mention 🥹
This just makes the ending so much sadder 🤧
WTF???
Bird 😔 🪦
Han being awkward around a girl is so funny. He's so relatable.
There were so many hints 😭
That's mother 🫶
You know when a character is introduced as being so perfect there is no way they really are that good, and they're just gonna disappoint you? Willo is proof that that is not always the case ❤️
SHE WAS THE MOTHER THAT STEPPED UP!!!
Bird is gonna regret saying this if you know what i mean 😭
HE IS RIGHT AND HE SHOULD SAY IT!
Han, you slut (affectionate)
BABY GIRL 😖 (Gavan when i catch you 😤)
Dancer didn't even know yet 😖
Chapter Four:
I remember that this was the chapter I started reading the book again. It was a Friday and I had actually stolen this book from someone else's hold, so I knew that I had to finish it soon before they missed it. So, I sat in my 8th grade homeroom and started reading.
Cinda did such a good job of showing us just how different Han and Raisa's lives were with the smallest of sentences. Like, Magret telling Raisa that her old clothes being sent to Ragmarket being equivalent to being thrown away to her, meanwhile that's how most people Han knows get clothes.
HOLY CRAP THEY GOT IT RIGHT 😭
Just giggling at Raisa looking over her room, knowing that it actually was Hanalea's old rooms.
Tears
Pls don't stick with that thought, Rai 🙏
Don't worry, Raisa. The guy that you picked will woo you up until you agree to marry him, and decades after that 🫶
I love her so much 🤧
She's so real for that
Fiona 😒
I wonder why 😒
QUEEN 👏
Bitch, know your audience 😭
All bow before the queen, Raisa ana'Marianna 🫶
Adam, you beautiful soul 👏
Micah being the first to bring up that the story of the Demon King isn't totally accurate is hilarious since the breaking was actually caused by his ancestors, not Han's. (Also, Raisa's reaction to him asking questions compared to Han telling her a completely different story that she's always known makes my heart fluttery)
Raisa has always been the smartest in the room, and I love that for her, but it also makes me sad for her
My note for the first mention of Vega is literally just "fufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufu--"
Chapter Five:
I have a very distinct memory of reading this part the first time. I had just got home that Friday, and was prepared to finish this by the end of the weekend. I locked myself in my family's living room and read this, even tho i didn't understand like half of the lore surrounding it.
That being said, this book is way more enjoyable now that I understand the lore about the demon king and the wars and the other realms.
🤭
Han is such a nerd (affectionate)
Oh, sweetie...
It just makes me happy, okay?
The pieces were always there 😭
Thanks a lot, Cinda. Now I'm crying again.
This is literally me and my grandma smh
This is why I have to give Raisa her props whenever I can, because my girl needs all the love she can get.
LMAO
I know it's been 6 years since i read this book, and i kinda sped through this one, but how did I forget this whole Southie plot line?
Quick question, what is the other realm? We know Fellsmarch, Arden, Tamron, We'enhaven, Bruinswallow, and this chapter reminded me of the existence of the Southern Isles, but what is the seventh one? It's not Carthis is it?
FIRST CAT MENTION, MY BABY GIRL <3
I'm not crying, you are 😭
Baby boy 🥺
Hanson, that is your future wife that you're talking about 😒

If you liked Tamora Pierce you might like...
Thought it might be fun to offer up some book recs, on the off-chance that anybody is looking for something new to read. Suggestions welcome, and thanks to @lisafer for her additions! Series links are to the first book on goodreads.
Sharon Shinn
Shinn writes high fantasy, with strong female characters. She's got a couple of different universes, but the ones I'd recommend are:
Twelve Houses - the most like the Tortall books, in my view. Follows a ragtag band of Breakfast Club-style oddballs - two mages, two shapeshifters, and two Riders (essentially the king's men) - as they investigate unrest in the kingdom. They shouldn't fit together, but they do.
Elemental Blessings - similar to Emelan in that mages are generally attuned towards one particular thing. In the first book (Troubled Waters), Zoe has been living with her father in exile, but after he passes, she gets dragged right back into court politics when the king chooses her for his fifth wife.
Leigh Bardugo
Bardugo has two series (third pending!) in the same universe. The Grisha Verse is mage-led and a dark romance. Six of Crows* is essentially a crime caper duology with fantastic characters, and I had the sense of 'I think they're going to pull this off... but how??' throughout. If you've ever wanted the Court of the Rogue to feature more heavily in Tammy's books, I recommend this.
Diana Wynne Jones
I must have been living under a rock because I only read Howl's Moving Castle last year. If some of you are in the same boat, this is a fairytale-esque story about a girl who gets on the wrong side of a witch, and winds up being transformed into an old lady. Hoping to break the spell, she goes in search of the wizard Howl, rumoured to steal and eat the hearts of girls.
Natasha Pulley
Sorry to anybody who also follows me on my personal journal since it’s all I’ve been talking about, but I just read The Watchmaker of Filigree Street*, and it's so charming I'm going to recommend it here too. Set in Victorian London (though with scenes in Japan), it features mystery, a gentle romance (if you're worried about liking the thing because you've been burned before, rest assured that it is okay to like the thing), and a clockwork octopus! Slow to start, but worth it.
Rainbow Rowell
Wrote a novel about a Fangirl (essentially a Drarry fanfic writer) who feels set adrift once she starts college, and then wrote the canon behind it, and I'm delighted that the sequel to Carry On* is called Wayward Son.
Kristin Cashore
The Graceling Realm is a trilogy featuring a non-chronological tale that starts with Katsa, who is born with the grace of killing. Select few are graced, and like others, she’s immediately placed in the service to her uncle, the king, who uses her to terrify his subjects. Then Prince Po comes to court, looking for his kidnapped grandfather, and Katsa goes on a journey with him that will change their world forever.
Maggie Stiefvater
Assuming most of you have heard of the Raven Cycle*, but just in case - Gansey is in search of the ancient Welsh king, Glendower, and Blue knows Gansey is going to be dead within the year before she even meets him. Set in real world Virginia, with magic along the lines of clairvoyance and dreamscapes, plus the angriest dreamer you're likely to encounter (don't worry - internally, he's got the consistency of marshmallow).
Cinda Williams Chima
Seven Realms: Han Alister is a thief who will do anything for his family; he steals an amulet from a wizard, but it turns out to have belonged to a Demon King from a thousand years prior. Meanwhile, Raisa is a princess of two worlds who doesn’t want to be an ornament. She would rather be like Hanalea, the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. Things get interesting when Han and Raisa’s worlds collide. This is a longer series, and one where you get to see characters “level up” from people with limited abilities to near god-like power.
Connie Willis
Firmly on the sci-fi side of things, and I'm mostly including this because of how much my fellow TP friends love this series. The All Clear duology follows three historians who go back in time from Oxford 2060 to study history. They're supposed to observe a particular event and immerse themselves in the experience without affecting the past before going back to their present day. Things get messy.
D.M. Cornish
In a world of flintlock pistols and lamplighters, The Monster Blood Tattoo trilogy begins with the journey of Rossamund, an orphan boy taunted for his girlish name. He is about to begin a dangerous life in service to the emperor, and his simple journey gets complicated in a world of predatory monsters, chemical potions, and surgically altered people designed to keep the monsters at bay. Rossamund has to learn who to trust and who to fear, among both monsters and people. This world is such delightfully dark steampunk, and it’s incredibly detailed. Incidentally, Tamora Pierce gave the series a five-star rating on goodreads!
* features LGBTQ foreground relationship - Fangirl is the only one I can think of with wlw, and unfortunately, she's more of a background character. Elemental Blessings does feature lgbtq content, but not with a main character.

Common Languages
A list of known base languages common to the Imperial Realms.
Common: A multi-facted language, able to express a variety of emotions. It borrows or adapts many words from other languages. Common Phrase: “A golden key can open any door” Enough money, or the promise of it, will accomplish anything. Examples of names: Lower class have only a given name, middle have a surname from their family or profession. Nobles have a surname and/or have a “of -location- “ attached to refer to their lands.
