Now that Ghibli's new movie is coming out soon, I've been thinking about anime films and wanna talk about my favorite animated movie ever, Tokyo Godfathers.

TG is a 2003 tragicomedy by Satoshi Kon, following three unhoused people––an alcoholic, a runaway girl, an a trans woman––who find a baby in a dumpster and set off across Tokyo to reunite her with her parents.

If you like the sound of that, go watch it because the rest of this post is spoilers and I have FEELINGS about this movie.

URGHH, the fact that only two moments of true kindness, generosity, and care given to the three protagonists without any expectation of reciprocity are given by a Latin-American immigrant couple and a drag show club full of trans women. The fact that, despite her loud and dramatic personality, Hana is the glue that holds the team together and the heart of the whole movie. The fact that this movie pulls no punches at showing the violence and inhumanity committed by "civilized Japanese society" against the unhoused. The fact that Miyuki craves to be loved by her parents and ends up seeing Hana as her true mother. The fact that Miyuki starts off accidentally using transphobic language against Hana, but slowly begins calling her "Miss Hana" out of respect. The fact that, according to Kon, Hana's role in the story is as a mythological trickster god and "disturb the morality and order of society, but also play a role in revitalizing culture." The fact that Hana so desperately wants to be part of a true family, yet is willing to sacrifice her found family so they can be with their own, and is rewarded for her good deeds in the end by becoming a godmother. The fact that, throughout the movie, wind and light have been used to signify the presence of god's hand/influence (this movie's about nondenominational faith––faith in yourself, faith in others, faith in a higher power. Lots of religious are referenced, such as Buddhism/Hinduism, Christianity, and Shintoism), and in the climax of the film, as Hana jumps off a building to save a baby that isn't hers, a gust of wind and a shower of light save her from death. The fact that god saves a trans woman's life because she proved herself a mother, and that shit makes me CRY.

Strade: Machine oil, grease, blood (real bad if he's recently killed/tortured someone), cheap cologne, cigar smoke, cheap beer Ren: Really nice shampoo and moisturizer scents like lavender or roses Lawrence: Rot, mint (to cover up the rotting smell), grass, dirt, earthy tones, small whiffs of different flowers Derek: When in the desert, like must and sweat; at home, like really nice colonge (like ones from Gucci idk) Celia: Nice perfume scents (roses, vanilla, orange) with a hint of alcohol Mason: Smells like the woods; trees, grass, earthy smells. i reallyyyyy miss the "hanzo acts like an older brother to dva" headcanon so i thought i should share my thoughts cause i havent seen content for it in so long ;_; be warned there are a lot of headcanons and some assumptions about canon events

- Neither of them got a normal childhood

Hanzo grew up in the Shimada Clan, an environment that expected the best from him at every moment. It was beaten into his mind that he was and had to be the best at everything, and that he had to be serious and calculated in order to serve his clan. His father had no room for childishness or fun, so neither should Hanzo. His seriousness at such a young age emotionally separated him from Genji and Kiriko, and likely other children his age. 

D.Va was drafted into MEKA at 19, which placed major responsibility and stress on her. Her hometown being attacked by omnics combined with having to fight them herself wore her down immensely. Once she began racking up wins (in video games and in fights with omnics), she became a young celebrity of decent size, even going so far as to star in movies. This amount of fame so young definitely had an impact on her mental. 

- They both see themselves as less than people or ignore their own feelings

Hanzo was raised to be an asset to the clan. He was meant to be a stoic leader, not an emotional one. I heavily doubt his father cared much about his feelings as a person, more so about whether he had traits useful to the clan. This idea has been internalized and follows him into adulthood, given how vain he is.

D.Va’s representation by the media shows her as a fearless fighter and an optimistic icon, harshly contradicting how much the omnics attacks and losses are weighing her down. Since the people of South Korea see her this way, she feels obligated to live up to this idea of herself. She also gets very invested in her work and tends to neglect things such as sleep when she is focused. 

On an unrelated note, I want to introduce a headcanon so I can elaborate on how they might interact: - D.Va reminds Hanzo of Genji

D.Va and Genji are, firstly, both gamers. This is the most glaringly obvious similarity to Hanzo, and it emotionally frustrates him to no end. 

They both stay glued to things, even when it becomes unhealthy (work, games, etc.). While this was more of a childhood trait for Genji, it still applies to D.Va. 

They’re both quick-witted with their humor and comebacks.

I think Hanzo and D.Va would have a lot of tension because of this (mostly on Hanzo’s side) when they first meet, which I might talk about in another post- but methinks when Hanzo notices D.Va is pushing herself too hard, it activates some weird older brother instinct in Hanzo. He's familiar with Genji staying up all night to play a video game, and since he knew he couldn't stop him, he simply brought food or company instead. He repeats this with D.Va as well. A lot of the things that Hanzo does for D.Va are projections of what he wished he could have done/used to do for Genji when they were kids.  thank u for reading i know this is super disorganized bc its been in my drafts forever u_u

He notices the wrinkles on your face, the white strands of hair, it's really been that long hasn't it? He holds a soft spot for you, but at the same time he resents you. You were everything to him, you were supposed to change him, but in the end it never mattered. It was stupid of you to think he could change. After you left, he didn't know what to do, he didn't know any other way to sustain the bills of the house! Yeah you were there as his emotional support, and sure the phone calls helped here and there..Okay, maybe he's being unreasonable for hating you. But still you cut him off, you stopped talking to him! (Even though he did kidnap and torture you..)

"Ren? Please, let me out of here. Not again..Please.."

The quiver in your voice, that desperate plea. Maybe it wouldn't hurt for you to stick around, maybe catch up a bit! With a tug on your restraints, he leads you out of the dark room, dragging you into a new room as he helps you on your feet.

hi i haven't seen this yet on tumblr so i'm throwing my crack theory here:

mystery character is Hana.

Everyone is obviously assuming it's Tenko and honestly it's probably going to be Tenko, but Hana seems very interesting and given the current situation with Tenko/Tomura's body (aka it's gone into dust) somehow more likely?

My theory of how this could be Hana is that AFO is simply a bastard and snatched her before she could be killed - he definitely has illusion or cloning quirks that could replace her.

The reason why AFO doesn't use Hana is because she's "too far along"

He wanted someone he could make into whatever he wanted from the start, to control everything about their life entirely. But like... we know AFO has a lot of side plans. Just in case. The orphanages full of replacements like the one Touya was in is proof of that. I think it would make sense to keep Hana just in case because the point of it being Tenko specifically isn't that he's special (he was literally made into what he is - according to AFO). It's not about his individuality.

It's about being a Shimura. A descendant of Nana Shimura, of All Might's mentor. Therefore, Hana would be the second very best potential successor. Also, I feel like mister "little brother <3" AFO would like Hana is only because she's Tenko's older sister.

So perhaps through quirk fuckery and trickery he kept Hana specifically, and then...

Forgot about her. Or maybe, she didn't work out how he wanted her to, maybe she was in fact too old and noticed he was a fucking weirdo and he had to take her by force, which explains why the mystery character/"Hana" is so banged up and panicked and especially in a prison jacket. Alternatively, she escaped and for one reason or another was thrown into jail, or she was forced into villainy by AFO or society, or maybe her quirk is dangerous or AFO gave her a dangerous quirk to make her believe she has to cooperate with him because otherwise she'll hurt others/be arrested - there could be tons of things.

Finally, all I have look wise is LOOK AT THEM.

That is undeniably a Shimura to me. Like jesus.

look at this shit. this is either Tenko before he became Tomura or it's Hana, because just look at them.

The eyes are rounder than Hana's which could indicate that it's Tenko (and again; it probably is, this is just my little crack theory because I love Hana) or it's simply caused by the angle, aging or the clear panic on the character's face.

The hand on the wall is giving hey look they're not decaying the wall lol.

yuichi is not a fully realised samurai as he never completed his training, so he does not have his daishō ! he uses bokken and his bō and stolen weapons to survive, and since the swords are a samurai’s soul , yuichi’s soul is untethered and it was easier to use the mystic sword to hold jei down
