i lied in the post title, btw. i actually have only one main thought about this run.

i have a proposition to make, batman fandom: dick is actually more wary of Jason then bruce is.

i think—dick heavily dislikes jason for always being able to uncover the old wound. i think as someone who's been there since the start, has seen bruce through his best and his worst, cannot stand this grinning spectre upending all the progress bruce has made with his grief. and! i think a part of dick has always felt unsettled that even he couldn't completely heal that grief. and the one person who could do it (he thinks), the one person who is against all odds alive to do it—what does jason do? he needles the wound open. he won't let it rest. he beats up dick's little brother. he sows chaos all over gotham and dick's new city. he saw bruce drown in the self-destructive depression for years and the one person who might have helped ease it in a way no one else could is too busy cutting a bloody swath through various cities.

i think, also, that this—detachment, if you will, is aided by the fact that dick and jason did not know each other as well as they might have. jason was taken in after bruce fired dick, so nightwing was still taking off solo. they have been able to connect and dick and jason have very cute interactions pre-ditf but it's a drop in the ocean compared to dick and tim's relationship.

there is also, i think, a disconnect between robinjay and red hood jason—his little brother died with robinjay, and whoever the red hood is is almost a stranger

He's someone from a long, long time ago. Black sheep of the family, as it were. His name is Jason Todd. He thinks he's me. This may sound crazy, but... he's supposed to be dead. Twice over.

"from a long, long time ago." and like i said, there's this almost detachment from dick, no (positive) reminiscence of jay's robin days. i do think that dick, wrt jason, is mostly unrestrained by past sentiment—or at least he's better at separating that sentiment than bruce, who although tries to remain objective in his chase against red hood, is also notably shaken, to the point that jason was able to force his hand & drive him to panic, leading to half-thought, panicked decisions that a level-headed batman would not have made (as i think we are all in agreement that bruce would not actively decide to disarm his son via batarang to the throat, especially considering his no-kill rule.)

there's more i'd like to say, but this is most of it—i don't want to drown the dash with batman rambling, but im asking yall to consider it. think about how delicious this dynamic is!! there's so so much to explore!!! and i think it really hammers home just how much the world has changed during jason's death & disappearance 🫣

Kotoko Harrow Themes

I noticed that there seems to be a...vague take of Kotoko's Themes in Harrow that I sort of don't agree with. To summarize based on what the MV showed us, Kotoko's entire deal is about:

🔸Preying/exploitation of the weak (Children and Elderly). 🔸Exploitation of Power (Serial Killer's rich dad, the apartment towers) 🔸Cannibalism of the Weak / Parasite (Mikio Oshii, Paper bag robbery couple). 🔸Exploitation and Objectification of Women and Repressed Desires (Pervert at the Train Station taking Pictures).

Let's get more in-depth of the scenarios playing out.

Kotoko's family dynamic and implications. Wolves travel in packs to support each other. As mentioned in Kotoko's interrogation, her family structure is as follows. Grandmother, father, mother and older brother. You will notice there is 4 Wolves and Kotoko. Meaning 5 family members!

I think it's interesting that grandma is living with Kotoko's family. Because this could imply something about their financial structure family-wise!

When grandparents and grandchildren live together usually means their grandparents are well-off.

But! people's lifestyles in Tokyo are kind of complex, it's also possible that the family has no choice but to live in the grandparent's house. Like the children had problems with their family relationships/needed to care for their frail grandparents etc.

The reason I brought up Tokyo is because in Kotoko's Prisoner HD card sent to Premium App users, it's said that she lives in Akasuka, Tokyo. However, it's most likely that they're rich considering Kotoko has money to burn to bribe a journalist.

There are 2 major crimes that I believe is a great clue to their own family life. Kotoko places great interest in the warning sign which says a person has been dropped near the vicinity of their home.

If you check the first minute of Kotoko's MV as she is waking up, you will see a wolf paw for a split second, A wolf's pelt on the ground, before the lighting strikes, a flash of its eye (important for later) and shows the wolf alive again. The pelt is gone from the ground and replaced.

I think Kotoko used to have a little sister. The black haired girl wearing pink clothes in particular because we see the shots as if they were from her memories as the MV goes on.

This girl is visible as a flashback despite having a different victim on the last part of the video as seen here:

Some of the details of the murder are shown as if they're from Kotoko's memories. If you read the previous articles from the other blog post, none of the articles talk about how the Serial Killer killed his victims aside from throwing them on the street nearby the vicinity of their houses.

Meaning she's intimately aware of the Killer's modus operandi because their family was a victim of this serial killer.

You will also notice a lady in white dress lying down after being hit by the hammer. I believe this is Kotoko's grandmother / monster because of the body physique. None of the articles talk about this as far as I can remember.

These memories keep flashing by as Kotoko goes solo. Then, when finally given the chance, his is the wolf that is with her in the shelter and the one that eggs her on to kick this serial killer's ass. You will also notice they put great emphasis on the wolf's eye at the beginning of the video. Giving them a strong link.

To recap, the reason we have so much emphasis on two exact crimes:

🔸The Serial Killer killed the little sister and possibly the grandmother. The Serial killer also keeps getting away with it because his father is a politician. His face is fully visible in one of the frames.

🔸Mikio Oshii scammed the elderly and stole "luxury" bikes. It's likely that their family was scammed as well. Kotoko killed him while wearing men's clothing to get away with it. It is one of the news articles talking about her vigilante activities.

Kotoko losing her pack one by one could be a financial ruin because of the scams and the death of the little sister.

What's interesting is what happens near the end. Kotoko's chair is replaced with a pelt...Is she...still alive?

Guild Member Next Door (kinda) translation - part 2

Disclaimer, as always: This is based on an MTL translation, I do not know Korean myself, I am trying more to stick with the impressions/vibes of a sentence instead of a strict word-for-word meaning - and most importantly, this is only for fun.

Now let's get into it:

It was almost a year ago that his relationship with this ‘Business Partner’ began. It didn’t start out particularly friendly, and even along the way, it sometimes became a bit rocky again. And all of that was putting it nicely.

Yeo-woon had always liked games, ever since elementary school. It started with him secretly taking coins out of the piggy bank in the living room that his family put their change in and going to the local arcade to play. In middle school, he played mobile games that were popular with his friends, and by chance, he started playing online games in high school. After a variety of games, he came across Illusion while he was job hunting. And from that point on, he stayed with that game, all the way until now.

Illusion wasn’t a game with a steady player base for nothing. The guild system was exceptionally good and there were often events. In addition, since it was a game specialized in character customization, there were many people who played the game just for all the different accessories. It was a fun game for users of all ages and even had an active community, with a market and trade system in place.

‘Should I join a guild too?’

One day, that thought suddenly popped into Yeo-woon’s head. In other games, he mainly played by himself, and because of that, he’d rarely joined a proper guild.

Illusion was a game where it was difficult to progress through the story without working your way up one of several different character classes, to reach new and better versions of it that were called character jobs. When he worked hard to level up and was about to do his first job change, he heard that, without a guild, the higher his level, the more difficult it would be to advance further. So to get a hunting buff, he joined a guild that was always recruiting new guild members. But since the guild master did not log in consistently, the guild members left one after another and in the end, it became a ghost guild.

‘If I’m going to do this, should I just create a one-person guild and do it alone?’

He thought about it for a moment, but quickly dismissed the idea. Mainly because the strength of the hunting buff depended on guild level and had a huge range. If you were going to create a one-person guild, the buff would be so small that it would have been better to just play solo and not join a guild at all.

In order to find himself a new guild, Yeo-woon went onto the party matching screen and took a quick look around, to see if there was anyone currently looking for guild members.

In the party matching window, there were numerous temporary parties for all kinds of trades and dungeons. While scrolling through Party Matching by pressing the arrows in reverse order starting from page 15, a guild recruitment post caught his eye.

“Should I try it right now?”

Without thinking, Yeo-woon clicked the ‘Join Party’ button. When the party leader accepted Yeo-woon’s join request, the mini map at the upper left of the screen also gained the party status, showing where each party member was.

This would be the incident that started everything.

There were a total of two party members. They were ‘Captain Poseidon’ and ‘Ji9Star’, a max level Night Spear. Joining the party was easy. Anyone could join by simply clicking on an existing party and then pressing the ‘Join Party’ button.

‘neutaaaa has joined the party.’

[Party] Ji9Star: Hi hi

Ji9Star was the party leader who let him join the party. So Yeo-woon assumed this person was also the guild master and as a result, Yeo-woon tried to turn his social skills up to the max and greeted him.

[Party] neutaaaa: Hello!

[Party] neutaaaa: I’m hoping to join the guild.

Until then, he’d had no interest in guilds or in-game names, so he had no idea what the Poseidon Guild was. This meant that he was completely unaware of the numerous rumors about Poseidon.

Earth Star looked at the party window, figured out where Yeo-woon was, and started moving straight towards him. The other party member, Captain Poseidon, was silent, so he was probably afk.

Through the world’s mini map, Yeo-woon saw a blue dot indicating a party member was fast approaching. He made his own character, who was sitting on the floor, get up and jump in place, prepared to welcome this Earth Star.

However, when Earth Star appeared in front of Yeo-woon, he stood in place and just looked at him for a long time.

‘I said hello earlier, should I say it again?’

But the moment Yeo-woon moved to break the silence, a speech bubble appeared above Earth Star’s head.

[Party] Ji9Star: Why are you so weak…waa

[Party] neutaaaa: ?

[Party] Ji9Star: ᄋᄉᄋ?

[Party] Ji9Star: Did you join without reading the party introduction?

Party introduction? Something like that existed in this game? Yeo-woon went back to the party matching window, found the guild recruitment post, and clicked on it. When he clicked on the title, a join button and an introduction appeared, set up by the user when they had created the post and it seemed to be talking about the guild’s requirements.

The introduction was short and clear:

‘200LV+/Access rate+/With interview/Do daily quests/Must attend ranking match’

‘Actually, I didn’t even know there could be conditions, so I didn’t notice them. Last time, I was just automatically in the guild as soon as I asked to join. Even if everyone has left now and it’s nothing but a ghost guild anymore…’

Among the conditions set forth by the guild, he was able to confirm that he definitely did not meet the required level, though he wasn’t sure what anything else meant… Because Yeo-woon had only just turned level 120.

[Party] neutaaaa: Aaah, I just saw it ㅠㅠ

[Party] Ji9Star: Lol

[Party] neutaaaa: Too bad…ㅜㅜ

[Party] Ji9Star: Yes lol

It was just a joke. However, Earth Star did not seem to be easy-going enough to handle such a joke. That person didn’t react well at all, so it ended up being a painfully awkward situation. The moment Yeo-woon decided to just see himself out and moved his cursor to the Leave Party button, a speech bubble appeared above Earth Star’s head.

[Party] Ji9Star: Do you have a crush on me?

“…?”

[Party] Ji9Star: LOL

[Party] Ji9Star: Hey

[Party] Ji9Star: Why do you keep following me?

“…Eh?”

‘Who follows who? …I? Him?’

Yeo-woon had nothing to say and just stared at his monitor for a while. Since there was no answer, Earth Star again laughed a LOL.

‘What situation is this?’

The message was different in color from the previous one. Upon closer inspection, it appeared that Earth Star had used a server megaphone. Looking at the server text in front of Earth Star’s message, he realized that the server megaphone had made it so the message was sent to every channel, visible to everyone currently online in the game.

People he didn’t know kept sending him whispers. The guild zone he was in was the only place where users could freely hit and kill each other, without having to request a PvP match. Additionally, if someone died in the guild zone, they received a death penalty, unless they owned an item called Token of Resurrection.

Not long after the whispers began, fancy users with sparkles all around their bodies appeared and suddenly beat him up. When Yeo-woon first heard a loud hitting sound, he hurriedly took a potion and tried to run out of the guild zone. He pressed the right keys, but got frozen in place by a user’s skill and so the beating continued.

‘You died. Would you like to resurrect in the closest village?’

Yeo-woon stared at the screen in fascination once he realized that his character’s eyes had turned into Xs and some of his experience points had been removed as a penalty for dying here.

[All] DonnerDono: ?

[All] 101112: Oh, it’s already over

“What, I’m really dead?”

Yeo-woon muttered absently to himself. It all happened so fast, he couldn’t quite process what had even happened to him.

[All] DonnerDono: I shaved off all that person’s hp

[All] DonnerDono: You only got the last hit lol

[All] Ji9Star: ᄋᄉᄋ lol

[All] DonnerDono: Yeah, no matter how I look at things, this just ain’t it

Surrounded by the flashy fighters, his character looked pitiful, especially with his title of [Just Past The Beginning!] right beside his username.

But Earth Star just laughed, until an endless string of hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha filled up the entire chatbox.

Hearing Earth Star belittle him, calling him a liar, Yeo-woon felt his more murderous side rear its head.

As he kept staring at the monitor in surprise for a while, Earth Star wrote another message, saying LOL.

It’s not that he was dead, it was that he couldn’t keep up with the speed of these messages. When he processed the words, he realized that Earth Star seemed to have mistaken him for someone else. Why was his keyboard suddenly writing in completely different letters? Yeo-woon pressed the Language Switch key and the Enter key with his little finger, to return his keyboard to normal. He was planning to retype what he just said, but Earth Star struck first.

Yeo-woon decided to muster up a thousand years of patience and forgive the guy just this once. Just to not have to deal with this any longer.

‘Hope you bite your tongue while eating. Miss the bus and have to run and drop your phone. When going out, get pigeon shit dropped right on your head. Ah, I guess I should just act like I stepped on shit myself and leave the party…’

[Party] Captain Poseidon: Ah, Earth Star!

[Party] Captain Poseidon: Did you hit your head?? What happened while I was gone…;;;

The person who had been afk all this time had finally returned. Yeo-woon knew that the Captain still had more to say, but he didn’t want to be in this party for another second. So he gave his screen the middle finger and left them by themselves.

‘neutaaaa has left the party.’

And as soon as he revived in the nearby village, he ran blindly in a random direction. But soon after, Earth Star found him. He caught up with Yeo-woon’s character, who had run to the other side of the entire village.

‘Why’s he so fast?’

His speed was so unbelievable that his jaw dropped. It only took that one moment of distraction for Earth Star to cross the remaining distance, as if he had some longer, better version of the dash skill.

‘Zero wave!’

Earth Star beat Yeo-woon’s character to death with a one-shot skill. There was a sound like something breaking and then his character’s back was bent clean in half. A sign appeared above him, showing it had been a critical hit, and then he died again and his experience points fell once more.

‘You died. Would you like to resurrect in the closest village?’

[All] neutaaaa: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Oh no, what a mistake

‘A mistake? Using a skill to beat someone to death? No way.’

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Guess you should have stopped when I called you lmaoo

‘You didn’t, you fucking bastard.’

Yeo-woon pressed the revive button, respawning in the village again. And then he took off in a new direction, but something that looked like a fly from afar dashed up from behind him, fast as a rocket and landed in front of him. Yeo-woon was shocked.

‘You were at the other end of the whole village, but you still caught up with my character so quickly?’

This should have been impossible, unless he had some insane speed buff. Something strange was going on with this character.

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Let me clear up the misunderstanding rq!

[Whispering] neutaaaa: ??

Yeo-woon stopped for a moment and wrote a question mark in the chat window.

‘What misunderstanding? There’s no way there’s another misunderstanding between him and I.’

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Because of you, the GM lowered my position in the guild ㅠ Feel sorry for me

Then Earth Star used an emote to make his character hit the ground and cry. To Yeo-woon’s surprise, a faint smile slowly spread across his own lips.

‘No clue what it means, but that’s really good.’

Seeing as that change made him so annoyed that he even followed Yeo-woon all the way here.

‘I’ve never before in my life argued with someone like pre-schoolers.’

But since the person he was dealing with was just like a pre-schooler, he’d started talking this way without even realizing at first. And wasn’t there some fitting sayings for this situation anyway, like ‘an eye for an eye’?

It seemed the person who was afk earlier was the actual guild master. But then why did this guy, who wasn’t even the GM, get so irritated so quick by Yeo-woon having missed their rules?

‘…Anyways, that’s none of my business.’

Feeling relieved, he started running towards the right edge of the guild zone map again.

However, Earth Star seemed to not want to let things go, as he kept following his character and even circling him with his speed, as well as pummeling his character with normal attack skills. But even more frustratingly, maybe thanks to Earth Star being max level, Yeo-woon couldn’t even handle five of his hits before his health droped into the red. So he had to constantly use precious health potions like they were his last water in a desert.

When he finally managed to get out of the guild zone, he also left his gnawing fear of suffering a second player-kill behind.

‘I don’t plan on setting foot near the guild zone again any time soon. Maybe I should just go to a whole different channel…’

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Where are you going?

The speed of those messages was like speaking in person. It was almost at lightspeed and it was impossible to understand how it could be done, unless everything was written in advance and then copy-pasted.

‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’

Then, a large Friend Request window appeared on the screen. A max-level nightspear jumped around in the background, causing an afterimage effect. It felt like the character was urging him to accept the friend request already. Of course Yeo-woon refused.

‘You have rejected the friend request.’

‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’

‘You have rejected the friend request.’

He couldn’t go anywhere, thanks to the constant friend requests that kept popping up. The persistent chat messages and friend requests kept covering up his screen. Sometimes, 1v1 PvP Request windows and Party Invitation windows would also pop up. After rejecting all incoming messages for twenty times in a row, Earth Star stopped zipping all over the place and came to a halt in front of Yeo-woon’s character.

[Whispering] Ji9Star: I’m right here;

‘Why are you so invested in this?’

He couldn’t figure out his intentions. He’d only wanted to leave the party and the whole situation behind himself gracefully. Why would Earth Star expect anything more from him?

[Whispering] neutaaaa: Are you a child?

[Whispering] neutaaaa: I already have lots of friends, so I won’t be friends with you.

[Whispering] Ji9Star: This is so dumb. Are you really bragging about the number of friends you have right now?

[Whispering] Ji9Star: If we’re looking at things from that kinda view, I have way more friends than you.

[Whispering] neutaaaa: Ah sure…

[Whispering] Ji9Star: I just needed to put something big on your screen to stop you from running, since you’re ignoring me and keep running off ㅠ

The best way to respond to a sarcastic person was to make them swallow their own medicine. Well, the actual best way was to not interact with them at all, but even when Yeo-woon switched to a different channel on the server, Earth Star could just tell somehow and kept hunting him down, until he found him again.

[Whispering] Ji9Star: But I really don’t understand

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Why on earth are you doing this to me?

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Do you know me?

It became difficult for Yeo-woon to play the game smoothly, thanks to all the annoying windows popping up all the time. And then Earth Star even followed him into the field and kept him from hunting any monsters.

[Whispering] Ji9Star: Trash Punch!

Since his high-level skills immediately wiped out the monsters on the map, there were none left for Yeo-woon’s own quest to kill monsters. He just wanted to hit this Earth Star, who was still zipping all over the screen. He wanted to stop him and beat him up, but this wasn’t the guild zone, so they couldn’t hit each other at all. And he wasn’t a max level player like him, so even if they could have, Yeo-woon would have only died again.

‘Can’t I block him or something?’

Even while he searched through the settings window and all its options, the friend requests continued taking up his screen.

‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’

‘You have rejected the friend request.’

‘Ah, this is so annoying. I really don’t want to play anymore for today, with all this bs he's pulling...’

Yeo-woon took off his headphones and then just pressed the power button, completely shutting off his computer for the day.

Completed my Second Game Jam!!

I completed Brackeys second game jam of 2024! The theme was Calm Before the Storm, and I was one of 1500 submissions!

I cannot fully express how happy I am to have finished my second game jam! The team I worked with were super amazing and I will go into their skills and what I appreciated later.

The game we made was a resource management, mobile defense, hack n' slash. While the submission build is not 100% functional, it still shows off some really cool systems and designs, and I'm very happy with how it turned out! I am continuing to do post-release updates and any new builds will be submitted to our Github while the Game Jam voting is ongoing.

Designing and programming this game was really fun! This was a week long game jam with a secret theme that was revealed on Day 1. Before the jam, I wasn't sure if I would work solo or as a team, so I drafted some ideas ahead of time for each theme that I was confident I could independently make systems for. Some of those ideas were an endless "swimmer", house break-in incremental horror, and helping neighbors with tasks around the neighborhood.

Ultimately, I decided to find a team. I'm still quite new to game jams and really enjoyed meeting people last time. I searched within Brackey's Discord server to find open teams looking for a programmer, either for Unity or Unreal Engine. I reached out to many cool people and ended up creating a team of my own! I made a Discord server for us to collaborate it, as well as the GitHub repo, Google Drive, and Miro. I focused a lot on making sure everyone was comfortable with one another and that everyone could contribute their skills to the project the way they wanted to.

Once the theme was announced, we started workshopping ideas day one. With team members in multiple time zones from NA to Europe, we met several times over the next two days to hammer out the main game genre, game loop, and systems. There were many ideas and possibilities, so talking through how we would implement each aspect of it and what assets would be needed for development helped us land on our chosen game. We made sure to keep the theme in mind throughout the development of systems, design, narrative, and artwork.

The biggest challenges for me as both a developer, designer, and team lead were managing scope and schedules. We knew what systems we wanted, but getting them to interact properly was already going to be a challenge, and we were essentially developing two "Game Modes" to function as one. As such, we were mindful to keep a list of minimum viable features and to knock additional features into "if we can" territory. When it comes to scope, to improve I would say I would start digital prototype development and systems design even a day sooner, and to build certain features one at a time until completion rather than bouncing around a bit (this is my experience). Using User Stories was especially helpful for helping me organize what the goals of development were, even more so then the task list I made for the team.

When it comes to scheduling, we have 9 team members in 5 different time zones, so making sure work and delegations were queued up for when I was offline and others were up was very important. Task lists as well as morning "hi-hello-today we will-" really helped with managing expectations and updating the whole team on development progress. It was really satisfying seeing the whole team interact and work together. I was actively learning from my fellow programmers, Spoon, Necron, and GraphicEdit, and I hope everyone else can say the same. Also, I think having a diverse time zoned team also helped us with maximizing production development without burning everyone out. Knowing something was being done around the clock without forcing anyone to crunch or sacrifice IRL activities was really nice.

Scope ultimately led to our game being less than 100% complete. We didn't have much time the last 2 days to tune the enemy strength, add greater significance to delivery items, attach power-ups to each resource item, or to fine-tune additional bugs. The story also wasn't able to iterate correctly, the random deliveries queue is still in-production, and the custom deliveries option could be more clear. I'm satisfied that these are aspects that I know can be improved and lead to a satisfying and complete game with replay value.

As for contributions, personally, I worked on a few different things throughout the jam. I managed onboarding team members, creating and updating team resources, and developing task lists for async development. I supported the team by reviewing sounds and music, artwork, and game systems. I developed the Cargo Controller ( the script that controls the movement and inventory of the cargo vehicle), the Hub Manager (the script that controls the inventory of the Hub during "Calm Mode", as well as the assignment of deliveries), and the Storm Mode Journey (which controlled the "Storm Mode"s game loop). With assistance from Spoon, I also worked on the Game Manager, making sure that it had access to both game modes and could keep track of persistent objects and values like our currency, story deliveries, and delivery items. With his assistance I also created the scriptable objects for the various resource and delivery items based on Spoons SO script.

I worked on the UI for the Hub, designing potential layouts, finding references, coordinating with the team on colors and fonts, and laying out the structure and prefabs using Unity's UI system. It was a bit of a headache but only because the nesting got so deep and the layout groups were a little unpredictable. Still, a much more satisfying and improved experience than my last game jam. Thank you to Rusty for the beautiful UI panel art!

Most days, I would start work off by connecting with the team, seeing what they needed to be successful, updating docs as necessary, all before digging into my code or UI responsibilities. My experience in project management really helped me succeed in this, as well as the dedication and talent of the team I was working with.

Had a four hour car drive yesterday and thought about what monster hunter weapons each of the The Quarry characters would use so please enjoy this analysis of monster hunter weapon type mains and playstyles that literally no one asked for. I'm basing this off of World: Iceborne since it's the game I'm most familiar with.

Jacob:

This himbo would be a greatsword main. It's big, it's clumsy, but it packs one hell of a punch when it lands. Big sword means big damage numbers. He wouldn't use any of the side or rising slashes. It would be true charged slash or nothing, like god intended. He'd forget to block more often than not and get knocked back quite a bit, but he'd land enough hits to do a formidable amount of damage. Also, Kaitlyn would yell at him enough that he'd go after the tail like he's supposed to lol.

Kaitlyn:

My girl would be a light bowgun main. Heavy bowgun would be too slow for her tastes, and while it does do more damage, I could see her giving that up for more maneuverability. I could also see her doing a hardcore sticky build. It'd be five minutes into the fight and she's already got the monster stunned and on the ground. She never misses her shots and would be the one to take the time to tenderize monster parts before absolutely blasting them to shreds.

Depending on the monster, I could also see her doing a DPS spread build. She'd pile on the short-range damage mods and get up close and personal, hitting all the weak spots like the shotgun-wielding queen we know she is.

Any team she'd be on would be formidable, especially if she had someone like Dylan drawing aggro for her.

Dylan:

Our boy has two mains. The first is a defensive lance build. He's up front in center, hiding behind that shield while drawing aggro and taking hits like a champ. He's not a DPS, he's a full on tank, with max defense, fortitude, shield, and knockback jewels. And he'd be making jokes about stabbing the monster with his pointy stick the entire time, if you know what I mean.

His second main would be hunting horn. As much as the boy loves music, how could he not? Smacking monsters around while composing sick beats and buffing your teammates all at once is the perfect combo. He'd be a support-class king. I could see him running wide-range with speed-eating as well to serve as a healer.

Ryan:

Ryan's a bit harder to pin down since he can be equal parts aggressive/defensive depending on the choices you make in the game, so he'd probably choose a weapon that had a shield. More than likely it'd either be sword and shield or gunlance. He wouldn't bother with layering on the defense though, only elemental resistances. He'd boost his attack to get right in the thick of it, but would have a shield to fall back on if things got hairy.

His playstyle would be dependent on who his teammates were. If he's with Dylan, he's probably running sword and shield, because otherwise Dylan would be making jokes about him "blowing his load" in the monster with a gunlance.

If he's running sword and shield, I could see him running wide-range, especially if he's with both Kaitlyn and Dylan and Dylan was running lance.

Laura:

Girlboss is in it to win it. She's DPS through and through. Shields are for people who don't know how to dodge. If the monster is hitting you hard you hit it back harder.

When she's with other people she's maining switchaxe and is min-maxing the hell out of her build. She's got max attack, max expert, max challenger, and is eating for attack. She's zero sum discharging her load right into the monster's weak point and is loaded up on destroyer jewels to break every part on that motherfucker. If you can kill a monster fast, Laura can kill it faster. If it takes longer to set up a trap than it does to kill the monster, she's killing it.

When Laura is solo she's running a min/max heroics hammer build, because she fears no god and she fears no monster.

Max:

Max is a dual blades user. Easy to learn, easy to use, with the added bonus of Naruto running. He'd be more of a healer support build, running wide-range and buffing Laura so she could focus on damage. He'd make sure all the parts were tenderized for her. But he'd also always try to mount the monster (and of course make jokes about it), much to Laura's chagrine.

Abi:

Insect glaive all the way. She's up and away from the fight playing The Floor Is Lava. She'd load up on defense and elemental resistances and max her stamina regen to let her keep going as long as possible. She's not here to DPS she's here to survive and she'd be good at it. Also, she thinks the kinsect is cute.

Her and Nick/Emma would make a good team since most of the time she'd be out of the way of their attacks and wouldn't get hit. Abi would always want to capture monsters because she would feel bad killing them.

Nick:

Nick's another hard one to pin down, but I could see him maining either longsword or heavy bowgun. Both because they would make him look cool lol.

For longsword he would focus on using helmbreaker as much as possible but wouldn't be great at countering. He'd also forget that his spirit attacks hit his teammates and would get in fights with Jacob since they would constantly be interrupting each others combos.

For heavy bowgun, he wouldn't have different builds, he'd probably just have one generic build for everything. He wouldn't use just one type of ammo, he'd switch between everything he could fit in his inventory. He'd prefer wyvernheart over wyvernsnipe.

Emma:

Emma would be a chargeblade main with an equal parts defense/damage build. It's a flashy weapon that still has good defensive capabilities and she would take the time to properly learn how to counterblock and the intricacies of sword and shield mode versus axe mod. I could see her also focusing on utilizing monsters' elemental and status weaknesses against them. She'd be an ideal teammate for the Alatreon fight.

I could also see Emma using bow. She'd be inflicting statuses on monsters left and right. And as a bow user, she'd be a clutch claw queen. She's tenderizing all the parts and is the first to throw the monster into walls as soon as they unenrage.

Winter Was Not An Exciting Season

When I started writing this, about 3-4 episodes had dropped for most shows that started in winter 2024 season on Crunchyroll, and I came to the conclusion there was no reason to get excited... And I think that's pretty much how it worked out. I stopped watching most of these shows at some point. Eventually I dug into the archives on Crunchyroll instead... which was much more rewarding.

I by the way never bothered with "Solo Leveling" or "Shangri-La Frontier" because I don't get what's the point with these kind of shows. OP skill this, video game that, and usually no actual stakes at all. Why bother?

Weird scientist tries to place his research in a paper that's more of an "I saw an UFO manned by Elvis" style tabloid. Lots of unconvincing hijinks happen.

Stopping point: I switched off in episode 1 when somebody suddenly developed a superpower because this is all over the place. And stupid.

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord

Girl gets reborn as the hidden boss of a game she used to play. She decides to avoid becoming a problem and also levels up to 99, which is a level reached by no one in this world (and the limit).

It does not help that she has dark magic as attribute and the heroine of that game is a light magic user.

What's hard to bear is that she gets constantly ostracized way into episode 4. Everything she does is taken negatively and the potential love interests of the heroine (it's a dating sim) constantly stir trouble for her because everyone assumes the worst.

On the surface this is yet another show about being reborn into a dating sim, like "The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs" or "I'm in Love with the Villainess". Though I can't help but think that the setup is also a tongue-in-cheek about how being exceptional can get you bullied in Japan. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down" is idiomatic there for a reason.

In general a decent show, but what kind of person is the protagonist that she doesn't understand social cues at all? I don't think that's established very well.

Stopping point: I'm not sure why I stopped watching around episode 6, there seems to be no strong reason beyond losing interest. Might revisit.

Sasaki and Peeps

Middle-aged salary man gets himself a pet bird which turns out to be a reborn wizard from another world.

What follows is a wild (and also illogical) mix of genres. He gets transported to an Isekai world and learns magic, but mainly he wants to open a business there by transporting Japanese goods there and selling them. (Yet he never figures out that he could transport gold back to pay for them - or just be rich.)

His magic then gets him recruited into a squad of psychics fighting other psychics. He's totally OP because psychics have only one ability and his magic works differently for every spell. Anyway, the show doesn't benefit from cutting across plots. It first tries to hit the "living the quiet life in another world" vibe, then goes into "everyday man thrust into the world of superpowers", and now seems to also tap into "adventuring in another world..."

Sasaki is likable enough, an innocent man, mostly, really drab and unassuming. What disturbs me is that so far all the females appearing are minors. There's a high school girl waiting for him every day next door - why? I don't want to know. His wild colleague at the agency who is a snappy dresser? Supposedly 17. (Yes, high school age.) The person he's supposed to protect next - a child beauty. (She seems important as she was given a completely "doll style" credits variation of her own.) I seriously don't want to know where this is going...

None of the GIFs here on tumblr feature the protagonist. Funny.

Stopping point: After Episode 3. After the third under-age girl appearing I was wondering how many other genres they are going to cram into this one.

Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!

Tokyo boy moves to rural Hokkaido and meets his future girlfriend, a total gyaru (gal).

Actually, he meets several, but I can't imagine this show playing out any other way. Has surprisingly little to say about Hokkaido itself except that it snows a lot and you need to keep warm.

The show has a mellow, slice of life flair but lacks originality. I actually ended watching the full season, it's an easy show to watch. The three heroines are all pleasant people that overlap with part of his life, making the harem-ish setup of all three crushing on him a bit annoying since two of them never stood a chance.

Stopping point: I actually finished this one but I must say the drama built for the last episode was a complete no-show and completely unconvincing, even by the typical "Japanese is a language of unsaid things" standard.

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic

Frankly, initially this was the absolute highlight of the season. I waited for every episode.

Two talented teenagers are summoned to be the heroes saving another world. And a third, average guy, who happened to be nearby. He ends up stealing their thunder because he has the rare healing magic talent.

Surprisingly, the other two people are really decent (looking at you, "Shield Hero") and in general he's treated well. The only dramatic concern is that healing magic has found its master in his teacher, an over-the-top drill sergeant style woman.

It quickly becomes apparent that healing magic, if used wrongly, is the strongest of them all - giving you infinite stamina, instantly restoring your strength, making you the perfect tank. You just have to train like a maniac. Which our drill sergeant ensures will happen.

Stopping point: After episode 7. The show is funny and has heart up to a certain point, but somehow I lost interest, also because it's destroying its previous vibe by hinting at impending doom. Interestingly I read a review today that points to mid season being a complete drag and messing up the pacing, and the finale not saving it. I guess I'm not surprised?

7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!

A woman gets reborn into another world as a noble, only for her defining moment to repeat over and over. She turned down by her prince fiancé and basically ejected from her social status.

But this filly has spirit, and so she cuts out a life of her own successfully. Only to die in a war years later and to find herself at the same scene! Since she retains her memory she starts to pick different routes, leading various lives, picking up skills and knowledge, only to die eventually in the same continent-spanning war.

Her last time around, something odd happens. Just as she's escaping her betrothal she runs into the instigator of that war, the dark prince of the empire. And he is so taken with her, he proposes to her.

An unusual setup for sure. At some point we will likely learn what is behind the whole war business, but just watching her navigate all situations in stride is actually interesting by itself. As the title suggests, big drama is mostly absent so far ever since her "final life" started.

Stopping point: Middle of Episode 6. The mini-villain little brother turns out to be the complete opposite of a schemer and actually only wants the attention of his oniiii-chaaaan!! The whole flip was so unconvincing, I couldn't anymore. It's absolutely unclear why the guy she married does anything, including telling her to avoid his brother.

Tales of Wedding Rings

It would be hard to take this show serious at any level as it mostly exists as a vehicle to get this guy together with big-buxomed vixens for plot reasons - but there isn't much plot either.

He follows his childhood love to another world and accidentally marries her, getting the first ring of power. Then he learns he must fight off some evil led by the Abyss King. For that he has to marry more princesses.

There's no logic to the action, though. In the first kingdom he can fend off abyss monsters but gets his ass handed to him by an abyss knight. So they run off, abandoning their own kingdom?!? Then, as soon as he gets the ring from the elven princess he easily hands the abyss knight their ass without even trying. Instant wipe. So that knight keeps showing up and somehow evil rings appear and there's no rhyme or reason to the drama.

Otherwise it's pretty clear that he wants things to work out with his childhood love, but the other girls want attention, too. So another unrequited harem, badly done, too. And yes, the kingdoms they encounter are sexy elves, sexier cat people, and lolicon demon people. Expect plenty of fan service.

Stopping point: Episode 9. No special reason. The show is easy to watch, undemanding, but also doesn't deliver much. You can pick it up at any point and leave it and you won't miss much. Ironically I got mostly GIFs for "Rings of Power" when searching, and frankly, even this anime is better than that.

A Sign Of Affection

I almost forgot this one.

The heroine of the story is for all practical purposes deaf but she soon gets to know an absolute boy-hunk and wonders what these feelings are. Which she then proceeds to find out since he also likes her.

As for a story that focuses on a character with a disability, it does very little with it except her having a lot of trouble reading situations around her and the impediments of communication. And people constantly getting in her space. (Which is a necessity but unusual in Japan.)

It's certainly a high profile production for a romance, with great art.

Stopping point: After Episode 2.

In spite of being a fan of romance stories, it somehow rubbed me wrong that not only does an absolute model boy (the art is good enough that nobody needs to tell us) become immediately interested in her, he also is portrayed as this interesting character who travels abroad in a moment's notice for his studies. Mr Perfect on day 1. There didn't seem to be anything interesting to be going on at all. So I lost interest.

When looking around on the internet, in most places this show is described with one short paragraph for a synopsis. A critic compared it to "A Silent Voice", but that show needs almost a full page to have its synopsis laid out on Wikipedia - because it's a complex take on multiple topics - disability, bullying, social dynamics, and the ability to change. Somehow that strikes me as a contrived comparison.

She has made her tedious journey from lone scavenger in desert to ...lone Jedi goddess in desert. There isn't any more story to tell. And frankly...I no longer want to see any more 'noble, remote, unrelatable' Jedi stories. The PT put me off them completely, and one of the things I loved about Rian's masterpiece is it teased the possibility of a 'new' kind of Force user...a grey Jedi.

Ben Solo's story, however, was just beginning. There is plenty of scope there for a tale of a man seeking to atone for his sins and find peace...and perhaps love...on the way.

Yet DLF instead decide to continue the dreary tale of a Perfect Person brainwashing kids to become Perfect People, human emotions not allowed. And to hammer home the message, they even hire a director known for her stance on 'equality for women.' Unfortunately DLF aren't promoting equality, they're promoting female SUPERIORITY.

Yea actually. If you're flexible in your weapon choices, bow genuinely makes that fight substantially easier. Azure age bow is really good with crit element. I know it's not ice but it's stats are so good crits are easy. Otherwise come with blast resist and high fire resist. Spam traps in phase 1, use cat to get status, and team up if you can. Lbg user going ham with traps and status ammo is so worth.

Alatreon is a different beast. If you want the cheese strat: bug stick, max level element bug (the top tree one with high element and physical but low speed) and you can literally use a raw weapon. Obviously element is better for topples but if you dive a lot and the bug drills the head and body (gotta keep em tenderized). You can get the elemental topple with just the bug element (cat helps too). Longsword is also really good but you can do it with pretty much any weapon no problem with a kulve crit element weapon, 3 piece safi, coalescence, and 20 dragon resist. Even with hammer that build can get 3 topples solo with no cat. But coalescence is insane against alatreon. The boost from safi and not being able to get dragon blighted make it really good.
