"You get to win a big prize. What would you like?" The vender asks.

You wandered around the town below the hill where the prestigious Night Raven College sat. Finally, you spotted the place you were searching for: the jewelry shop.

You remembered the day Cater took you, Ace, Deuce and Grim out shopping for some plates and cups since Grim accidentally broke them. As you browsed around the jewelry shop, you spotted a beautiful golden ring sitting in a display case.

There was a regal golden lion's head carved into the ring and you could see the inscription carved inside the ring, "Heart of a Lion". You smiled. "That ring would look perfect on Leona-senpai's finger." you thought. "And it somewhat matches his nobility...in a way."

Even when you arrived home, the image of that ring had never left your mind. "Once Leona's birthday arrives, I'll get that ring for him." you promised yourself. And so, before the month of July came, you worked hard at Azul's Mostro Lounge daily to earn enough money to buy that ring as a birthday present for Leona.

Once you've scrimped and scraped enough money, you didn't hesitate to head towards the jewelry store and purchase the ring. Once you made your purchase, you quickly headed back to Night Raven. Just in time for the birthday celebrations at Savanaclaw.

You felt your heart sink a little when you heard his words. You've always known that Leona wasn't always the social type. He much preferred his own company rather than anyone else's.

Even though you've had a huge crush on him for quite the longest time, you doubted if he'd ever have feelings for you, too.

"A quiet place where no one will disturb you. You're right, that doesn't sound like a bad way to spend the time." Cater replied. Leona smirked. "Right? As a dorm leader and club captain, I usually always have something to worry about." he said. "It means I need time to rest my body and mind sometimes."

You rolled your eyes at that. "Obviously." you thought. Then Cater asked Leona the final question. "What's something you'd like to do in the upcoming year?"

"Not be held back, that's all." Leona replied simply. Neither you nor Cater were prepared to hear that answer at all. Were you going deaf, or did you clearly hear Leona say that he wasn't going to be held back? "Wh...! Huh, that's all?!" Cater asked in disbelief.

You couldn't help but smile at his answer. You heard that he held himself back for over 3 years because of poor attendance and him not putting any effort in studying. But you knew better.

Leona has always held himself back because he didn't want to go through the painful hassle of the palace life. Being the second-born prince, he always got the short end of the straw. Always being overlooked, no matter how hard he worked to be recognized.

You thought back to the time of that inter-dorm Magical Shift Tournament. When you and your friends found out that Leona was the mastermind behind the incidents, you confronted him. And that was when you saw the emotions in his eyes.

He looked frustrated, angry that everything he had worked so hard for had slipped through his fingers yet again. And when Lilia rebuked him, saying that a collar fits him more than a crown would, and that he would never be king, the words felt like a final nail in the coffin for Leona.

Watching Leona become so broken and defeated, you couldn't help but feel your heart break at the sight of him. You even heard how hollow his voice sounded as he spoke. "This agony, this despair. How could any of you possibly understand?!"

And then, his Overblot happened. After you managed to defeat him, you glimpsed at his past memories. Being badmouthed by the servants of his palace, being pressured by his desire to be respected and recognized, trying to best himself against Malleus but failing...

Even though Falena, Leona's brother and King of Sunset Savannah tried his best to support his little brother, Leona just coldly brushed him off, not wanting his pity.

When you both woke up, you saw that Leona was willing to do his best at the tournament. Even after Savanaclaw lost the match, you were somewhat happy to see Leona being determined to win next year's match, even though you don't agree with his underhanded methods.

As time went on, even though it wasn't noticeable at first glance, you could see the steps of progress Leona has made, little by little. Even though he was still lazy, languid and downright arrogant, you could see the bits of kindness, determination and will to live shine through.

Even now, you felt a sense of pride and joy for Leona for making it this far. Tears brimmed in your eyes as the memories flashed through your mind. "Leona-senpai..." you whispered, holding back a choked sob...

"Hey, herbivore!" Leona's baritone voice cuts through your thoughts like a blade, snapping you out of your musings. "How long are you going to stand there?"

"Oh, right! I need to give him his gift!" Without wasting another second, you hurried over to his side with the little black box with a golden bow in your hand. Leona raised an eyebrow as he watched you approach him with something hiding behind your back.

"So, you came to wish me a happy birthday, huh?" he asked with a smirk. "Well, ain't that admirable of you. So, what did you bring me, then? At the very least, you are presenting a gift to royalty. As such, I'm sure you've prepared a very fine gift."

You froze, starting to panic. A fine gift? Well, it is pretty expensive. Will he like it, though? You were starting to get anxious.

"I'll take it off your hands, so show me what you got behind your back, already." Leona demanded, holding out his hand. You gulped silently. "Well, here goes nothing. I hope he likes it." you thought as you handed him the black box.

Leona opened the box and saw the ring. "Huh. A gold ring." he said casually. "I've got plenty of those, you know." You nodded, knowing how much jewelry he has, being a wealthy prince and all.

"This ring is different, though." you said. This was it. It was time to confess how you felt towards him. You took a deep breath before you started to explain. "There's a reason why I picked that ring for you, senpai. I picked it because it reminds me of you."

"Leona, I understand that you've been through a lot over your lifetime. Everything from your childhood to your Overblot episode to now. That ring you hold in your hand symbolizes strength, courage, resoluteness and nobility."

"The words etched in that ring say, "Heart of a Lion". I sincerely believe that you do have the heart of a lion, despite what others say and think of you. Even though you can be lazy at times, arrogant, smug, bossy, snide..." Cater snickered at your descriptions.

"True." he whispered. Leona shot him a quick glare, telling him to shut up as you continued. "...You truly care about other people, even though you never show it outwardly. Leona Kingscholar, please consider this ring as a token of my unchanging love and support to you." you said as you gave him a small bow of respect.

"No matter what happens, I hope that you will be able to go beyond, to be able to reach for the stars, even though they seem very far. I have absolute faith that you will."

Leona was silent as he listened to your little speech. After you finished, a short silence fell upon the lounge. You wondered if he thought your speech was too boring and silly. You lifted your head, and you were about to apologize when you saw the smile on Leona's face.

"So I have the heart of a lion, huh?" Leona asked, admiring the golden lion ring. He looked at the inscription in the ring and smiled. "Guess you've got some taste, herbivore."

Your heart swelled with joy when you saw Leona slip the ring onto his index finger. He held up his hand, the golden ring glimmering in the light. "Thank you. It's a very meaningful gift." Hearing those thankful words coming from Leona, you smiled as more tears streamed down your cheeks.

A soft sob escaped from your throat as you tried to swallow the lump in it. "How embarrassing. Crying in front of Leona on his birthday? What's the matter with you?!" you berated yourself mentally.

You raised your arm in a frantic attempt to dry your tears, but they just kept coming. "Please, just stop crying!" you silently pleaded. You then noticed movement coming towards you and you looked up at Leona.

He held it towards you. "For you, herbivore, as thanks for the speech." he said. You know what that orchid meant. In the language of flowers, the golden orchid symbolizes love, luxury, beauty and strength.

Leona had all those: strength, beauty, luxury and love. You hoped that one day, with your perseverance, love, courage and strength, you'll be able to stand by his side as his beloved queen.

You smiled as you took the orchid from his hand. "Thank you, Leona." you replied gratefully. "Happy birthday, my beloved king."

Leona gave you one last wink before he hopped onto his broom and flew off into the night, leaving behind a trail of golden petals and sparkles.

As Leona soared higher and higher, he looked up at the evening sky. Thousands upon thousands of bright, shining stars dotted the inky darkness, some of them streaking across the heavens, leaving behind trails of stardust.

Back in his homeland, the stars were said to be the great kings of the past watching over everyone down below. Your words echoed in his mind, "No matter what happens, I hope that you will be able to go beyond, to be able to reach for the stars, even though they seem very far. I have absolute faith that you will."

As Leona gazed at the glittering golden lion ring on his finger, a great spark of hope ignited within his heart. "One day," he silently vowed, "my story will be told throughout the ages. My star will be shining the brightest, the greatest of them all. And (Y/N)'s alongside mine." And he will see to it that that promise comes true.

Appearance:

2. What would your character wear if they were told they had to gussy up?

Gia: Almost certainly a dress, probably an above-the-knee cut (so she doesn't feel like it's tangling up in her prosthetic) in a darker, solid color (so it shows off the vibrancy of her tattoos). I could see her wearing a jewel-toned purple, maybe something with a peekaboo slit in the sides or up one of the thighs, and rose-shaped jewelry.

Vivienne: If it's out at sea, it'll probably just start laughing its ass off. Gussy up? Seriously? Anything that doesn't smell like sweat and fish is gussying up. While on land, though, she tends to dress pretty nicely regardless of circumstance, just because of societal expectations.

5. What are your character's opinion on scars?

Gia: They do still remind her of everything she went through, and that's painful, but for the most part she's gotten used to them.

Vivienne: Doesn't mind them, and they're part of the trade - though she'd rather they not be visible when she's wearing normal clothing, since shark-bite and rope-burn scars are probably pretty hard to explain for the otherwise-demure sailor's wife.

11. Is your character's favorite color a color they wear often?

Gia: She really likes that soft two-toned pink of a fresh carnation, and she does wear a fair amount of pink in her clothing.

Vivienne: I'd say her favorite color is that "wine-dark sea" color, where it's sunset or sunrise on the open ocean and the water turns this interesting purple-red color. That's kind of a difficult color to find in clothing, especially for that time period.

19. If your character had to get a tattoo what would it be?

Gia: She has a lot of tattoos! Most of them are botanicals or various insects :D

Vivienne: Probably a traditional sailor's tattoo, and it was probably a bet. It would probably get a sea turtle - historically, signified a sailor being welcomed into "King Neptune's Court", which for Vivienne is effectively how it became a siren.

5. Would your character ever try to haggle?

Gia: Not usually. She gets anxious when she's away from the house, so even if she does manage to get out to a craft fair or farmer's market where she could haggle prices, she's more likely just to find what she wants, pay, and leave.

Vivienne: Oh, for sure. It's practically an art form, and haggling was much more of a common thing in those days than it is today.

14. Is there an item your character is embarrassed they own or want?

Gia: She's probably a little embarrassed at the extent of her home security, especially given she's just a single person running a marginally-successful flower shop with no major assets, but it makes her feel safer to have those measures in place.

Vivienne: Nope. It doesn't really carry a lot with it, since most of the time it's swimming through the open ocean. Anything particularly valuable is left onshore, or she asks Wojchek to keep a hold of it for her, but she's not a material person by any means.

Food and Drink:

7. Is there food that has made your character sick?

Gia: Ground hamburger meat. She's never been a big meat-eater in general (not a full vegetarian, just doesn't enjoy eating meat much), and it was one of the main things HYDRA fed her because it was a cheaper source of calories and protein to keep her going. No seasoning, no sauces or anything extra, just cooked hamburger meat on a bun. To this day, it makes her stomach turn, though she only vaguely remembers eating it while in HYDRA's capture.

Vivienne: Frequently... it's the 1890's, there's not much in terms of food preservation and especially out at sea. Sometimes she can swim out to a shoreline and find some fresher food, or even fish herself, but there are definitely times it's gotten sick from spoiled food.

15. What food or drink does your character consider a treat?

Gia: She's a sucker for gimmicky desserts like rolled ice cream or those novelty milkshakes that are impractically decadent, and that's a treat because it's something she physically can't get from home so she has to leave the house.

Vivienne: Any kind of fresh fruit or vegetable. It sounds simple enough, but when you've spent a month at sea and finally take a bite of a fresh strawberry...

17. What kind of drinks does your character prefer?

Gia: Iced coffee, peach tea, diet cola, or horchata from the Mexican restaurant down the block from her flower shop.

Vivienne: Honestly... I don't even know. I think it pretty much takes what it can get.

Weather and Nature:

4. Is there a natural phenomenon that scares your character?

Gia: Not really? She actually finds the weather more calming that anything manmade, I think. And sure, fire tends to worry her, but any fire she'd experience in the middle of NYC is by no means a natural phenomenon.

Vivienne: She definitely develops a greater appreciation for sea storms once she develops a fondness for Wojchek - sometimes it even worries the storm is a warning from Poseidon himself. And she's terrified of being caught in a feeding frenzy while out at sea (this will actually play into a future scene in the fic... once I write the fic that is)

11. What part of nature would your character most resonate with?

Gia: Plant growth, particularly new growth or recovery after a storm.

Vivienne: Just the will of the ocean, how it can be calm one moment and tumultuous the next

(funny, you picked 2 of my OCs that actually have very strong nature themes lol)

16. What celestial body would interest your character the most?

Gia: Charon (Pluto's largest moon). Can't explain it, she'd just think it was interesting.

Vivienne: Polaris. Wojchek taught her how to navigate by the stars, and that was the first one she learned.

18. How willing would your character be to nap outside?

Gia: Not willing. She has enough trouble sleeping in her own bed, at night, thirty feet away from her clover.

Vivienne: Oh, sure. She does it all the time!

Community and Relationships:

3. How comfortable would your character be singing and dancing in front of others?

Gia: Actually, she'd be fine once she gets going. It might take a bit to get her up on the metaphorical "stage" to start, but she could have a lot of fun with it after the initial push.

Vivienne: Totally comfortable. She's actually got a lot of confidence and bravado, and her persona on land is more the restraint of that than her persona at sea is the magnification of it. Plus like... you're asking a siren to sing. Its only hesitance would be whether or not it would hurt someone, but it has no problem with the singing itself.

10. Is there a habit your character has that they learned from someone else?

Gia: She will sometimes swear in Greek under her breath - she doesn't even remember that much Greek, it's just a habit she learned from her parents and grandparents when they were trying not to openly swear in front of the younger kids.

Vivienne: A lot of her habits while working on a ship are echoes from her first husband (who taught her to sail), like the way she does certain tasks or ties certain knots, and how she moves about the ship.

11. Does your character have people they think would worry about them if they got injured?

Gia: Kate would worry, she knows that much. And she knows her family would worry, which is exactly why she hasn't told them about what happened with HYDRA - somehow it's easier to believe they'd grieved for her and moved on, rather than having to see everything the experience made her into

Vivienne: Wojchek, of course. He's her husband, after all. And it's made friends with a few of his regular crewmates too, and it's sure they would express sentiment if it got injured (though maybe not complete worry)

20. What would it take for your character to get into a fight?

Gia: If she's attacked and there's no other way out, she'll fight back. Otherwise she's pretty nonconfrontational.

Vivienne: She's actually fairly mild, both on land and at sea. She can throw a punch when she needs to, but she doesn't have much of a temper that would get her into fights.

Mind, Body, and Soul:

9. Does your character have any allergies?

Gia: When she was a kid, she was sensitive to pet dander and tomatoes, but those were both mild enough allergies that her clover makes them basically negligible (though she still avoids tomato-heavy dishes out of habit)

Vivienne: Not that she's aware of.

13. How does your character relax?

Gia: She likes painting, embroidery, and crochet in her downtime, and watching cheesy movies :D

Vivienne: I think it has a real fondness for storytelling, actually. It started with her first husband, since he had no patience for doing the captain's log every night and would push the duty off to Vivienne instead (who found she actually liked recounting the day), but later it becomes weaving dramatic tales to rally the rest of the crew on a tough day. Wojchek has tried repeatedly to convince her to write a book, but Vivienne usually brushes the idea aside.

18. How often does your character have nightmares?

Gia: Very often. The worst part is that she doesn't even remember them when she wakes up, since it's from the part of her memory she blocked aside - it's really awkward to wake up crying and call your girlfriend in the middle of the night, only to realize you don't even know what's wrong when she asks you about it.

Vivienne: It's a mix. Most of the time she doesn't remember her dreams at all, but sometimes it dreams of how it became a siren, and that's... dramatic, to say the least. I'll just leave it at that for now.

Hobbies and Activities:

7. What is a talent that your character is proud of?

Gia: She actually thinks she's a pretty good painter, and she does a lot of still-lifes of plants or arrangements in her shop.

Vivienne: See above answer about storytelling. It's really proud of the stories it creates.

12. What kind of music does your character enjoy?

Gia: She's the most "pop" of any of my OCs, so... pop stuff. I do think she's pretty open when it comes to music, though.

Vivienne: She does enjoy a good live orchestra on the rare chance she gets to see one, and also really loves the energy of a whole crew singing shanties together. Really, it just likes powerful music, whether that power is a hundred expertly-trained musicians or a six-man band of tuneless crewmates. And sometimes it does write its own songs to include in its tall tales.

17. Does your character prefer music or silence?

Gia: Music, absolutely. Silence makes her skin prickle.

Vivienne: It's never really silent, there's always the sound of the ocean or the bustle of people around her, but she definitely prefers music either way.

Well, anyway, I've officially moved from Kyoto to Osaka. I'm not in the city, but the area has welcomed me with a small and gimicky KnY event on the subway system, which I'll need to find a day to try.

Speaking of small and gimmicky, Lotteria is doing a small tie-in with their kids meals, but I was too shy to shamelessly order a kid's meal. And trust me, I know shameless with KnY merch. I didn't need the karuta set, really. Or the spinning top or the sumo board. Or the greasy hamburgers.

That said, I came across more of the wafer sticker series I collect and I completed the trio of special shiny Kamaboko stickers! I have not completed the set of moonlit Pillars though, bummer. (If it was just Giyuu missing I could make jokes at his expense.)

But speaking of things I put too much energy into collecting, I'm sad that it's gotten harder to find these regional keychains, and I've decided that instead of just getting one per place I've visited, I just want one of each design series, and I can get away with multiple ones for places I've lived as long as it's different designs. So even though I've had the Shinsengumi Rengoku for ages, I finally got two more Kyoto ones I've eyed for years. Yatsuhashi is delicious and I don’t often see Kanao on these keychains anyway, and Shinobu looks too good as a Maiko.

Like I said, you don’t see these so often anymore. I really should had gotten the Dotonbori clown thing Himejima when I had the chance, and I'm also still missing Uzui and Muichiro. Maybe someday they'll add Genya??

Speaking of the Butterfly Mansion girls, the apartment I left was a place I really didn’t like at first and I worked hard to make it more appealing. That included flowery wallpaper, including on a pillar in the room, so once I got into KnY I joked to myself that I lived with a Flower Pillar. Later on my mom sent me some paper butterflies (not knowing KnY, just long having been a motif I've often used in art and jewelry and such), and it felt even more like my own little Butterfly Mansion.

But now my closest shopping area is covered with giant gourds, so I guess that makes me feel at home too.

Anyway, new job starts next week, wish me luck, I've still got things to do around the new place~
