Hamburg Day 2
The following morning I stayed in my warm bed for a bit longer knowing it would be freezing outside. I had a quiet breakfast of muesli and a hot chocolate then walked down to the port. It was a bit dirty and the sky was grey so my photos didn't come out that amazing but I still saw some cool art down there and also climbed a hill to get the view like on the postcards. That's my travel tip for taking nice photos - look at a rack of postcards for sale and see which angles they use to capture the landmarks and then recreate them yourself! Only mine were dull and wintry compared to the postcards taken in the height of summer... I took a new route into the city and stopped in for a coffee at Public Coffee Roasters. It was a nice warm cafe after a cold walk and they had a lot of postcards with clever jokes on them like;
Kaffee ist kunst. Nur ohne ohren abschneiden.
(Coffee is art. But without the ears cut off.)
I ended up talking to the barista because I wanted to buy a shirt like the one he was wearing and he guided me to his storeroom to try on the smallest size available. I bought it and love it. It says "what would Jesus brew". I browsed a few shops in the city centre and then decided to walk to the edge of the city to take photos over the Speicherstraße bridges with a drone hovering just above me as I did so. Once the sun had set and the cold wind started to howl through the city I headed back towards Public where I'd spotted a nice Chinese restaurant across the road. They dished me up a huge portion of chicken hoisin and rice which filled me to the brim and only cost €7.50. It was super tasty and I was glad to have some veggies after a lot of fast food and fried things. I walked through the city again and looked in a few shops where I picked up a post card and magnet, then snuck on a bus back to my hostel by showing the driver my old ticket! I feel like I'm a schwarzfahrer for life now! I hopped off the bus at the Rindermarkthalle to browse around there a bit since it was still open and found a cool cup for my cousin Jen that was emblazoned with the words "Heisser Scheiss". I passed through a small courtyard with (presumably) a metal concert venue called Knust Club with a lot of rough metalhead-y very German looking Germans and returned to my hostel for the evening where I had the whole room to myself!

Rindermarkthalle, St Pauli
Food courts are a perfect way to sample multiple cuisines and still stay within a budget. The Rindermarkthalle in St Pauli was a quick 10 minute walk away from our hotel at Superbude, St Pauli.
Coming out of Feldstraße U-bahn station, the shopping centre is right next to it. Many people drive to the centre as there is a choice of three supermarkets. Edeke being the largest. In addition to the…

Hamburg: St Pauli
I was somewhat relieved to touch back down on German soil when I arrived in Hamburg and everyone was very friendly at the airport. I approached the information desk to ask directions to the S-Bahn and saw several people rush up before me and ask "entschuldigung wo ist die S-bahn?!" By the time I had reached the desk I already knew where it was so I asked instead about the Hamburg card and day tickets for transport. It was still early and I was catching the train with the later string of morning commuters, I arrived at the Reeperbahn in St Pauli at about 10am. To say it was cold outside would be an understatement! After watching the sunset in Madrid wearing just a tshirt and then a hoodie after dark, I was now shivering in a hoodie with my winter coat over top - with my backpack on! I had a 15 minute walk to the hostel that wound up taking a little more than 30 minutes as I was frequently stopping to admire and snap pictures of the street art that decorates St Pauli. After dropping my bag at the hostel and heading back out with my daypack I began my day properly with a flat white from törnqvist. The cafe was total hipster with a clean modern simplistic vibe and I felt comfortable to sit there for about an hour to warm up and update my blog. I also checked out attractions in the area and found a cultural centre nearby that seemed to be popular among street art fans. I was definitely impressed when I stumbled upon the huge colourful skatebowl, a climbing wall, murals, and some quirky shops (sadly they were closed). I was starting to feel hungry and what better way to celebrate being back in Germany than having a currywurst, which I successfully ordered auf Deutsch! My afternoon can only be described as "unplanned wandering". I was in awe of the amount of art, murals, stickers and cool stuff to see that I simply let my feet lead me around into side streets and narrow alleys to explore. I walked blocks up and down taking photos until my hands started to feel numb and I needed to warm up - I saw the perfect cafe Hermetic Coffee Roasters which looked like a warehouse-y oasis in a neighborhood of closed shops. After my coffee I wandered around the Sternschanze and Karolinenviertel and found possibly the highlight of the day, a small community garden and shelter where items could be donated and taken as needed. I took a quick look around the flea market at Rindermarkthalle and popped back into the hostel to check in and meet my roommate Leo from Köln. I took a bus into the town centre but unfortunately it was mostly closed and felt very quiet and cold. I reluctantly ate at McDonalds for lack of options but they also soon told me they were closing. Lucky I was feeling tired anyway!
