January 9, 2024
By Gabriele Marcotti
(ESPN) – For those who saw him play – even just in grainy videos – there's a single image of Franz Beckenbauer that stands out. Striding out of the back, ball at his feet, head held high, eyes scanning for things only he could see, while worry builds in the eyes of the opponents: that was "Der Kaiser" who passed away on Monday, on the pitch.
But there's far more to him than that.
You could say Franz Beckenbauer was a fortunate man. Most of us get just one act in our professional lives; he achieved GOAT candidate status as a player, made history as a World Cup-winning coach, helped his club consolidate its status as a juggernaut, organized a World Cup in his native Germany and ended his career as a member of FIFA's executive committee. (That last one left him tarnished: more of this later.)
Along the way, he was a central part of the biggest soccer-related U.S. phenomenon pre-1994 World Cup, joining the New York Cosmos in their pomp and playing alongside Pelé, Carlos Alberto and Giorgio Chinaglia.
Most of all, with Pele and Johan Cruyff, he was part of a triumvirate of phenoms that defined an era during which the world shrank, TV proliferated the game and superstars became truly global.
Beckenbauer also redefined a position: center back. He wasn't the first sweeper, nor the first central defender who could play a pass and step into the midfield, but nobody did it as effectively and on such a big stage (arguably, before or after). The skills formed in his early years as an attacking midfielder never abandoned him.
The ability to move into the middle of the park, create man advantages or simply spray the ball with accuracy all over the pitch are things we take for granted today, but they were pioneered by Beckenbauer. So too was the idea that a center back wasn't just a destroyer, but a creator, a guy who could illuminate a side; it may not have started with him, but nobody took it to a higher level.
In many ways, Beckenbauer was the first "modern" defender, which is why this commercial ahead of the 2006 World Cup, in which two kids fantasise about putting together a star-studded lineup of contemporary players, is so apt: even though he retired more than two decades earlier, he would not have been out of place among Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Frank Lampard and the other stars of that tournament...

Konrad Helbig (1917–1986) was a German photographer, art historian and archaeologist.
He is mostly known for intimate images of young Sicilian men. Nude photographs of young men were discovered after his death. These photographs, some of which were taken in the 1950s, are seen in the tradition of Wilhelm von Gloeden and Guglielmo Plüschow.
As a photographer and art historian, he systematically followed the traces of antiquity through the various cultural landscapes in Sicily and on the Italian mainland, in Turkey and on the Greek islands since 1954. For months he travelled from archaeological site to archaeological site and from museum to museum.
Like many photographers of the 50s and 60s, he worked with two cameras in parallel in black and white and in color.
Helbig's photographic work is held in the archives of the Deutsche Fotothek in Dresden, in the picture archive Foto Marburg of the University of Marburg and in the State Archive Hamburg within the collection of the German Society for Photography archive.

how many versions of cats were released on cd? I have the obc and olc versions so I was wondering if you knew what other versions there were, and if possible where to find them :D many thanks!
Hello Anon,
There are eighteen cast recordings:
Original London 1981 (both 2CD full recording and 1CD highlights)
Original Broadway 1982 (both 2CD full recording and 1CD highlights)
Vienna 1983 (1CD highlights)
Budapest 1984 (1CD highlights)*
Australia (Sydney) 1985 (2CD full recording)
Japan (Osaka) 1985 (2CD full recording)
Hamburg 1986 (2CD full recording)
Amsterdam 1987 (1CD highlights)
Paris 1989 (2CD full recording)
Japan (Nagoya) 1989 (2CD full recording)
Mexico 1991 (1CD highlights)
Warsaw 2004 (1CD highlights)*
Prague 2004 (1CD highlights)*
Dutch Tour 2006 (1CD highlights)
Italian Tour 2009 (1CD highlights)*
Japan (Tokyo) 2019 (2CD full recording)
2019 Movie (1CD highlights)
Vienna Revival 2021 (2CD full recording)
*Non-replica production, if that matters
In addition, there are a number of promo CDs that include a handful of tracks from the casts at the time of release:
Hamburg 1996 (3 track promo, assuming audio taken from 1986 cast recording)
Japan (Tokyo) 1996 (3 track promo)
CATS 1998 Elaine Paige (3 track promo; 'Memory' included, and two other non-CATS songs)
Japan (Osaka) 2001 (4 track promo)
Madrid 2003 (1 track 'Memory' promo)
Moscow 2005 (8 track promo?, two versions; both have 4 instrumental tracks)
Dutch Tour 2006 (3 track promo, audio from 2006 cast recording)
German Tent Tour 2011 (3 track promo)
Of everything listed above, the only ones I do not own are the Madrid 2003 'Memory' promo, Prague 2004 cast recording (a very rare CD that was scrapped before moving to production, only test/promo copies exist), and Moscow 2005 (another very rare promo release, only found with the press packages). Who knows if I can ever get my hands on them.
In terms of where to find them, the OLC, OBC, and Vienna 1983 are still being produced today and can be easily found new online, through Amazon or eBay (or better yet, in-person at your local music store!), and so is the Budapest 1984 CD as well (at least from what I can tell, it is always readily available brand new from Hungary). The 1989 and 2019 Japanese cast recordings are also still readily available brand new from Japan through the Shiki webstore. The 2019 movie highlights is also very easy to find, considering it just was released. The Vienna 2021 recording is still available from the label's website (at 45% right now!), but they only ship within Europe.
All the others can be found second-hand to varying degrees of ease online (i.e., eBay). The 1980s cast recordings are not too difficult, with Hamburg being fairly easily found, but as you start moving into lesser known (and shorter running) productions, it becomes more difficult to find them. Some are extremely uncommon, and I purchased the only copy I have even seen go for sale throughout the years, and I am still waiting for the chance to get the few I do not have.
Happy hunting to you, Anon!

I designed some masks for the cast of Cats if it were a masked theater performance :) I was inspired for a lot of them by the 1986 Hamburg production in particular.

My friend and I have a wager; I say that there have been 20-25 complete Red Deaths (not just pieces) made for replica productions since 1986, she says there have to be many more than that. Can you weigh in?
I don't have any exact numbers, but immediately I feel that sounds a bit meagre? It does of course depend on what you mean by "complete", as many of the costumes tend to share pieces - say, cloak, maybe hat - while they have separate main costumes. Sometimes doublet and breeches are also mixed and matched. Would that count as one or two?
Trying to count the different costumes seen around the world, I do see a high degree of re-use. These costumes are expensive and takes forever to build, hence there's few of them, and they rarely go on display. It also means re-use is high.
I remember talking to the head of costumes for the previous World Tour, and he told me how they worked endless hours on one of the original Australia Red Death costume between each show, to keep it fit for yet another performance. But I think it was also sentimental reasons for it, because it was WILDLY well made, they simply don't make 'em like that anymore. Jonathan Roxmouth got a new Red Death costume for his last Phantom run, which was well made in all aspects but more theatrical than splendid compared to the old one. The old one was a class act in costume making:
But I'm digressing. One thing to have in mind is that each replica production needs to have at least two operative Red Death costumes at all times, because one is used by the principal when first decending the staircase, and one is used by the double appearing shortly afterwards. They simply cannot share a costume.
Seeing how the first couple of productions around the world ran simultaneously, in West End, on Broadway, in Tokyo, Vienna, Stockholm, Toronto, Hamburg, Scheveningen, Melbourne and Basel... As well as the early US sit-down productions as well as the US, Canadian and UK Tours. That means a minimum of 30 costumes alone. Likely some of these had more than one costume for their various principals, due to different size. So let's say 35. And that's an absolute minimum.
And then cases where we KNOW new costumes were made. They made one for Peter Jöback when he first joined the West End production, as per info and photos he shared:
We know they made a new one for Jonathan Roxmouth in the World Tour, as per info and photos shared both by him and UK costume maker Jane Grimshaw:
We know they made at least three brand new ones for the Las Vegas production, as shared by costume maker Lindsay Kleinmann. This is not her photo, but shows three of them together, along with an especially made dog costume for charity:
Eventually, many of the late 1990s and early 2000s production could inherit their costumes. It means Belgium got their from Switzerland, Denmark got their from Sweden, the German costumes got a lot of the Dutch ones etc. But whereas some costumes has traveled a lot, for example the Red Death costume used in Moscow, Madrid, Sao Paulo etc, it was at one point new. Its origin seem to be Mexico, where brand new UK costumes were made, and mixed and matched with inherited Canadian costumes. But one or two were made new for them when they opened 1999. There's also been new costumes made in Japan. And definitely in West End, even if they mix and match a lot from stock.
That leaves us with at least 45 Red Death costumes. Probably more. Even with mix-and-match, and even with the hand-me-down practice. Which unfortuneately means your friend is right... Sorry!
Rarely photographed, here's the Red Death double costume in the World Tour, as a pendant to the first photo above:
(definitely not the same costume as the principal)

The Year In Doom & Gloom
Doom & Gloom From The Tomb celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, which is crazy. But what can I say, I keep finding cool live tapes and keep feeling compelled to share them with you ... whoever you are! A lot of this website is just me talking to myself, hashing and rehashing and re-re-hashing various obsessions, getting impossibly niche about some of my favorite artists, trying to shine a light into the darkest corners of music history. But that makes it sound like it's a serious endeavor. Mostly, it's fun. I hope it's fun for you too. So, if you need to catch up, here's a tip-of-the-iceberg rundown of what we checked out over the last 12 months ... as always, thank a taper!

DORO PESCH And ROB HALFORD Have Recorded A Cover Of 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart': 'It Sounds Really, Really Special'
During an appearance on yesterday's (Tuesday, September 12) episode of SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk", German metal queen Doro Pesch revealed that her upcoming studio album, "Conqueress - Forever Strong And Proud", will include two separate duets with JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford: the recently released cover of the PRIEST classic "Living After Midnight" and a version of the 1983 global smash hit "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", written by Jim Steinman and originally performed by the Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler.
"The record has 20 songs on it, and I think they all sound killer," Doro said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). "And it has three duets on it, and two duets with my favorite, with Rob Halford of JUDAS PRIEST, and I can't believe it. It's so awesome to me. I was a big, big PRIEST fan, and it was my very first big tour in 1986. And [Rob and I] met [again] last year in France at Hellfest, a great festival. And then we were talking, hanging out. And then we said, 'Hey, let's do something together.' So we did two duets. And the first one is 'Living After Midnight'. That was my choice, because I loved singing it. It was always a feel-good song. And then Rob Halford said, 'I have the song I always wanted to do with you. It's 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart'.' And that came out so great. When you hear it, you can tell Rob loves the song and I'm so happy. Even two duets, man. That's more than I can ask for. I'm a lucky baby, I tell you."
Asked if "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", will be a bonus track on the album, since it didn't appear in the LP's original track listing, Doro said: "It is on the record, but it just got finished a couple of weeks ago. Actually, I delivered the record and the vinyl is already done. And then I got an e-mail. Rob Halford said, 'Hey, what about the second song?' And I thought, 'Oh, man. That's too good to be true.' And then we did the second song. And it just got done a couple of weeks ago. We will do a video for that song, and it will come out — the video and the single will come out the day the record will be released, so on the 27th of October. But it came out so awesome. And oh, man, that was just the icing on the cake. I thought I was done with record. And [PRIEST producer] Andy Sneap, he worked on it, and my guys worked on it, and it was a great teamwork. And Rob Halford sounds so great on it. It's, like, wow. It's definitely one of my absolute favorite songs of this album, and it sounds really, really special. You have to check it out. But yeah, it's brand new — just got done; mastering just got done. And video we are doing in a few weeks."
Pressed by host Eddie Trunk whether her version of "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" is "heavy", Doro said: "Yes, yes, it is heavy, and it's, like, wow. It's very heavy, but it sounds great, I think, yeah. I think it's a killer version. I always get goosebumps when I hear it. And I think other people who heard it, they thought, 'Wow.'
"I think all my dreams came true working with all these great people, all my heroes, all people who inspired me so much," Doro added. "And [PRIEST] was my very first tour in Europe in '86 when metal was so huge. And it was such a great tour. So [Rob and I] finally did something together. And we always stayed friends. So I think that makes this album even more special to me, and I think many fans will love it."
"Conqueress - Forever Strong And Proud" is described in a press release as "the result of intensive hard work that took the incomparable singer and songwriter back to studios in Miami, New York and Hamburg, amongst others. The album presents Doro at the height of her creative powers."
