Research on Baddegama
We split the research amongst ourselves to further analyze each topic.
Tumblr media
I decided to dive a bit into the research on the author and the director as well.
The village in the Jungle was a novel written by Leonard Woolf in 1913. Years later in 1949, A.P. Gunaratne translated the book into Sinhala and titled it “Baddegama” and the translation grew in fame which in turn brought attention to Woolf as well. Woolf moved to Sri Lanka to work in the Civil Service as a cadet and was later promoted to Assistant Government Agent which prompted him to work in Hambanthota which was his inspiration for the novel.
Lester James Pieris, a famous screen director picked up on the film after Woolf’s passing decided to adapt the country wide famous novel into a movie after being captivated by its literacy and gave it the same title of Baddegama in 1980.
In comparison to his previous films Madol Duwa and Gamperaliya he did not consult the author as he had already passed by this point. Pieris decided to stay true to the novel and visited Hambanthota to record the film.
The plot and storyline for the novel and film follows the life of a small family in a village known as Baddegama where they are met with several challenges throughout the course of the novel that threaten to overwhelm them.
In the novel, the readers have to visualize certain aspects of Baddegama and what they look like while the film directly presents them on screen. Woolf had to rely on his literary knowledge to convey the message of the surroundings while Pieris was able to use his cinematography skills to bring those visuals to life.
Similarly, it can be noticed that Woolf wrote his book during a time where colonialism was still present in Sri Lanka while Pieris starts filming the movie in a post colonial Sri Lanka and leans towards hinting at larger issues within Sri Lanka using conflicts in the village.

Yala National Park in Sri Lanka
Tumblr media
The second-largest and most popular national park in Sri Lanka, Yala National Park is located along the Indian Ocean. The park is made up of five blocks, two of which are now accessible to the general public, as well as adjacent parks. The blocks are identified by their unique designations, such as Block 1 for Ruhuna National Park and Block 2 for Kumana National Park, or "Yala East" for the nearby area. It is located in Southern Province and Uva Province in the southeast of the nation. The park is roughly 300 kilometers (190 miles) from Colombo and has a total area of 979 square kilometers (378 sq mi). Yala was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and it was one of Sri Lanka's first two national parks, along with Wilpattu, when it was established in 1938. The variety of wild creatures in the park is its best-known feature. It is crucial for the preservation of aquatic birds, leopards, and elephants in Sri Lanka.
Around Yala, there are three animal sanctuaries and six national parks. National Park Lunugamvehera is one of the biggest. The northeast monsoon is when the park receives the majority of its rainfall because it is located in a dry, semi-arid climate zone. Yala is home to a variety of habitats, including freshwater and marine wetlands as well as moist monsoon forests. It is one of Sri Lanka's 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs). Six Sri Lankan indigenous bird species are among the 215 bird species found in Yala. The park features 44 animals that have been identified, and it boasts one of the greatest numbers of leopards in the world.

Quick summary to get a better idea of the locations and cast prior to sketching
Cast
• Humans (wizards, warriors, rogues, etc) • "Merfolk" (subtle, just humans with green tinted eyes, very subtle gills and webbed fingers) • Elves (tiny stick figure people) • "Golems" (subtle, just like humans but 7 - 8 feet tall and extremely muscular with greyish skin and warmer toned eyes)
Lore of the Ceylonia
Low fantasy reimagining of Ceylon during its Colonization. Colonials have set up camp along the shores of Ceylonia as per a deal with the Royal Family of Ceylonia. They attempt attacks on the Kandyan Kingdom and the Central provinces, and fail. As a result they only have control over the coasts of Ceylonia.
Tensions are high with the locals who think the King is irresponsible, wanting to dethrone him. The King has enlisted help from the numerous tribes in Ceylonia. The Merfolk - who are the most loyal to the king due to his many efforts to create reservoirs and tanks within Ceylonia - offer their support as spies along the coast. The Elves, a mischievous race, cause trouble for both the Colonizers and the Locals. The Golems, a race skilled at crafting weapons, offer to create weapons for the King should diplomatic efforts fail. The Kings court however, and many factions of his own race the humans, refuse to help in his endeavours.
Eventually, war breaks out between the Colonizers and the Locals.
Locations
Kan D'ee - Main Kingdom, heavily influenced by flora and fauna.
Adam's Peak - Golem Realm, littered with caves and labyrinthine mazes.
The Southern Dunes - Based on Galle, Hambanthota, etc. Used to be underwater but is now above the surface. Many massive coral foundations can be found littering the desert-like cliffs.
Maltrinco Bay - the most prominent stretch of beach in Ceylonia; home of the Kingdom of the Merfolk.
Ruwanweliseya Ruins - an ancient place of worship to the forgotten gods. some say that when you listen carefully, you can hear the faint instrumentation of an [insert instrument significant to Buddha].

Andy Vermaut:"Many Chinese Belt & Road Initiative projects fall too heavily on the debt of underdeveloped countries"
Andy Vermaut:”Many Chinese Belt & Road Initiative projects fall too heavily on the debt of underdeveloped countries”
The term ‘debt-trap diplomacy’ refers to an international financial relationship in which a creditor country or organization advances debt to a borrowing nation in order to boost the lender’s political influence, in whole or in part. Andy Vermaut:”Sri Lanka must lease their port of Hambanthota to China for 99 years. This is a China Debt Trap.” I became persuaded after three months that the myth…

Hummanaya Blow Hole Hambanthota district has made tremendous strides at a pace to Hummanaya in other names Kudawella Blow Hole, ranked among the top tourism destinations in Hambanthota District Sri Lanka. it is a rare geological experience made at Kudawella village of Southern province, Sri Lanka. You may hear the sounds of the blow hole on your way from Dickwella to Kudawella. It is just 1.1 km from Dikwella to Kudawella. This curious feature of Ho-ho-hoo sound makes you hurry to reach the destination. Kudawella Blow hole area is embellished with rocky cliffs. There is a rock boulder in the middle of the rocky cliffs with a breakage in the middle. When the sea waves hit the rock, the water force passes out through the hole at the bottom of the rock and shoots about few meters high into the air. It needs two powerful sea waves from two different directions to be waddled each other. A windy climate will worth very much. If so you will be astonished by the ‘jet of water’. It is a must to say that this scenery is breathtakingly mysterious in monsoon rain season. Perchance it will take about 10-15 minutes to get ready for a new shoot up. This stunning blow hole is almost visited by tourists. Most try to capture this thrilling experience into photographs. But it is quite hard to be done. If you are taking your kids, make sure to look after them well. If the sea waves are rough and strong it blows up about 25- 30 meters up into the air. Hummanaya is not a calm and quiet place. Actually, it is another hustle a bustle of nature. Nowadays this marvelous fountain area is being developed to attract many more tourists. On your way to Hummanaya, you can buy different kinds of fried fishes, cool drinks and different kinds of Sea food from stalls. Salayas, Kumbalawas, Thalapaths and much more are cooked and adorned, referring to various cooking recipes. So don’t forget to feel the taste of the sea food at Kudawella Blow Hole area. Local handicraft makers are selling their goods at the nearby stalls. R.L Brohier who was a journalist and a traveler have noted the Hummanaya in his records https://www.instagram.com/p/B-8Xd4gptg5/?igshid=1qhhjy9rrsl34
