In the southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces of Sri Lanka, in the southwest lowland wet zone, is Sinharaja, a rain forest and a hotspot for biodiversity. The country's only remaining primary tropical rainforest is located in Sinharaja. The word "Sinharaja" means "Lion King" in English. 11,000 hectares of primary and secondary woods are present there. This short stretch of hilly terrain is made up of several hills and valleys. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Sinharaja is the final tract of primary tropical rainforest left in the nation (IUCN). More than 60% of the trees in Sinharaja Forest are native to the area, and many of them are unique.
There is a lot of endemic wildlife in the reserve, particularly birds, but there are also many different kinds of insects, reptiles, and uncommon amphibians, as well as over 50% of Sri Lanka's endemic butterfly and mammal species. This is one of the key causes behind UNESCO's 1988 declaration of Sinharaja Forest Reserve as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sinharaja Forest was initially identified in 1936 as the Island's sole sizable area of the natural tropical rainforest.

The last Royal Kingdom in Sri Lanka, Kandy sits in the center of the island, 485 meters above sea level, and roughly 116 kilometers from Colombo. It has a magnificent scenery surrounded by lovely mountains. Kandy, which is typically regarded as the hill country's capital, served as the final capital of the last generation of Sri Lankan kings before they were eventually subdued by the British in 1815. The English gave the name Kandy as a derivative of "Kanda Uda Rata." The ancient name of this city is Senkadagalapura, however its present name in Sri Lanka is "Maha Nuwara."
Kandy The most revered Buddhist temple, the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple, and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sri Lanka are well recognized. Kandy was also a "Planned City" during the British colonial period of Ceylon. In light of these findings, UNESCO designated Kandy as a World Heritage Site. Today, Kandy, which has a total area of 1,940 SQ KM and is a popular tourist destination, is the second most well-known city in Sri Lanka. With its mixture of Tamil and Sinhala cultures, Kandy is important culturally. The solitary remaining relic of Buddha is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which was constructed inside the compound of the royal palace.

The island of Baththalangunduwa is located 20 nautical miles or 38 kilometers off the coast of Kalpitiya. One of the few inhabited islands off the coast of Kalpitiya, it is a tiny strip of land of about five square kilometers. Although the island was formerly a flourishing fishing community, it has recently gained popularity as a getaway for tourists seeking off-the-beaten-path adventure.
The ferry that travels to the island every day save on Sundays may be found in Kalpitiya, where the voyage to Baththalangunduwa begins. Although local fishermen and boat owners claim that Puttalam is the more direct route to the island, only vessels departing from Kalpitiya are authorized to get there.

Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu
Tumblr media
A Roman Catholic Marian shrine named after Our Lady of the Rosary of Madhu is located in Sri Lanka's Mannar district. This shrine, which has a history spanning more than 400 years, serves as a place of devotion and pilgrimage for Sri Lankan Catholics. The location is well renowned as a center of devotion for both Tamil and Sinhalese Catholics and is regarded as the most sacred Catholic shrine on the island. The church has served as a symbol of harmony amongst people of many religious backgrounds, including Buddhists, Hindus, and Protestants, in addition to Tamils and Sinhalese.
On July 2, 1924, Pope Pius XI gave the picture of Our Lady of Madhu a canonical coronation. Before the start of the Sri Lankan Civil War, attendance at the August event occasionally reached up to a million people. Due to the presence of refugee camps close to the shrine complex and its location in the middle of a combat zone, the Civil War had a significant impact on pilgrimage to this site. It received many shellings.
History
Prior to the 16th century, Christianity in Sri Lanka was not well recognized, despite certain local legends asserting that Saint Thomas the Apostle lived and worked there. The Kingdom of Jaffna, which included the northern peninsula of Sri Lanka, is known to have been converted to Roman Catholicism by Portuguese missionaries from India, particularly under the direction of Saint Francis Xavier. Both the Jaffna king and the Dutch persecuted the newly converted Christians. In this period, the Catholics in Manthai came together to construct a church and erected a figure of Our Lady of Good Health in a shrine.
Twenty Catholic families fled from Mantai to the safer area of Madhu in 1670 as a result of the Dutch invasion and persecution of the Catholic Church. They also took the statue of Mary from that church with them. Around the same time, 700 more Catholics moved into the Wanni woods from the Jaffna peninsula. They erected a new temple and the statue when these two groups came together in Madhu.

The Kadiyanlena waterfall, located in Nawalapitiya, a green environment, gives even more charm to the already lovely landscape. The waterfall has a peculiar beauty that is unmatched by any other waterfall since it cascades down three steps. The initial part (8 m) descends as a single water stream. The second section (7-8 m) descends over a large boulder. With a total height of around 25m, the third piece, which is 8 to 9 meters long, begins to collapse directly beneath the arch bridge. The magnificent aspect of the water flowing in steps more than makes up for the lack of height, despite the fact that a height of 25m may not seem threatening enough. Water continues to strike the rock from a great height at each phase of the fall. As a result, the enormous boulders have little pools on them, making them perfect locations for diving. Bathing is advised in the first and second portions. Swimming is prohibited in the third stretch because it drops into a pond that is about 30 meters deep. This stunning cascade has two names. She is known as Kadiyanlena Ella as she passes through the Kadiyanlena village. She was given the name Kataboola ella since the Kataboola estate is nearby. The waterfall is safe to dive into, but use caution if you go when it's raining. It is not advised to enter the ponds or attempt to climb up or down the waterfall when it is raining since the rocks are naturally slick and a lot of water surges through them. The water body flows peacefully to the Mahaweli river after the captivating fall. A rock may be seen at the bottom of this waterfall, to the right of the water stream. A little home perched on the rock is surrounded by water that runs under it. The Kataboola Estate Powerhouse is the mysterious edifice. Although there is another way to get there, tourists are not permitted inside.

The Ruwanweli Maha Seya, sometimes referred to as the Mahathupa (the Great Thupa), which is a stupa(a hemispherical structure containing relics) in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The stupa has the greatest collection of the Buddha's relics anyhow quarts, or one Dona and is where they are kept. Around 140 B.C, Sinhalese Monarch Dutugemunu, who succeeded Chola King Ellalan as king of Sri Lanka following a conflict, constructed it. Other names for it include Swarnamali Seya, Rathnamali Seya, and Svaṇṇamāli Mahaceti (in Pali).
This is one of the 16 sites of worship known as the "Solosmasthana" and the "Atamasthana" (the 8 places of veneration). With a height of 103 meters (338 feet) and a diameter of 290 meters, the stupa is one of the oldest and tallest structures in the world (951 ft). Numerous rulers restored the stupa, which had an initial height of roughly 55 meters (180 feet). After this stupa, the Kaunghmudaw Pagoda in Sagaing, Myanmar was designed. The Mahavamsa provides a thorough description of the stupa's construction and dedication ceremonies.

Kandegama Rock and Alien Mountain are other names for Danigala Circular Rock. In Sri Lanka's Polonnaruwa district, it is located close to Aralaganwila. The Danigala mountain is 280 meters high (919 ft). the most beautiful location is apart from people. The fog is adding to the valley's splendor as it sets, giving a spectacular 360-degree panorama. It looks like an airport where extraterrestrial spaceships might land when viewed from above. The Pamburugala Kanda, Amunugala Kanda, Hikkagala Kanda, and Henanigala mountain ranges may all be seen from the summit of the Danigala mountain range. Danigala Rock is one of the most difficult mountains to climb.
An archeological reserve called Danigala Rock is located on the Maduru Oya boundary. The Maduru Oya dam is supported by the rocks known as the Danigala and Kamburagala. While Kamburagala rock is located in the Ampara district, Danigala/Kandegama rock is in the Polonnaruwa district. The border between the districts of Polonnaruwa and Ampara is the Maduru Oya.

The Gerandigala mountain in the Kalugala region of Ududumbara, Kandy district, is the source of the Kalugala Gerandi Ella waterfalls. As you go from Kandy to Mahiyanganaya, you will pass by this magnificent waterfall on the left side of the Mahiyanganaya road (A25). This group of seven waterfalls, when combined, rises between 200 and 240 meters in height. From Mahiyanganaya Road, only four of these components are visible.
In Sri Lanka, there are a number of waterfalls with the name Gerandi Ella. This waterfall may be regarded as the biggest of the bunch. Because of its rat snake-like form, the waterfall has that name. Gerandi Ella has an enormous height of 240 meters. This waterfall is challenging to trek because of its challenging steep portions. However, there is a fantastic vista that you have never seen at the top of the waterfall. After taking in Gerandi Ella's natural beauty, you may visit Kulugala village to see its many lovely paddy fields. You will find a lot of inspiration in the wind that is flowing across the paddy fields. As a destination for adventurous camping, this location is well known. Don't forget to bring the necessary camping gear if you're interested in going camping.

Meemure in Sri Lanka
Tumblr media
Meemure is a remote community in Sri Lanka's Central Province that is nestled 324 meters above sea level in the mountains. It can only be accessed from the "Hunnasgiriya" mountain, which is a part of the Knuckles range and is located around 50 kilometers from Kandy. The 33 km trek from Hunnasgiriya to Meemure is challenging with many challenging parts, but the scenery is wonderful. The settlement itself receives an abundance of water in the form of waterfalls that originate in the Knuckles' evergreen forests. The pyramid-shaped Lakegala mountain is located east of the settlement, and the magnificent Knuckles range dominates the west. Meemure's southern and northern boundaries are separated by the Heen River and a forest that extends to the "Pitawala Pathana" grassland. Up until 2004, pack-bulls were the only means of transportation to Meemure. Cattle herds delivered supplies and equipment to the settlement in bags. Because of the village's abundance and wealth, pack-bulls were exclusively used to transport salt, textiles, tobacco, and calcium bicarbonate. However, the trails have been extended to accommodate three-wheelers, jeeps, and compact trucks due to the invasion of modern technology.

Kabaragala Mountain in Sri Lanka
Tumblr media
In Sri Lanka's Dolosbage Mountain Range, Kabaragala is the mountain's highest summit. This is situated where the districts of Kagalle and Kandy meet. The summit rises 1506 meters above sea level. Similar to the Horton Plains, it has an almost level topography. Moreover, a massive fallout akin to the Word End. It is situated in Sri Lanka's Sabaragamuwa Province. The mountain range is known as Kabaragala, according to the locals, because of its speckled iguana-like appearance. On one side of the mountain, when you reach the peak, a steep slope may be seen on the opposite side. You may ascend the mountain farther to view a number of interesting locations. The natural forest and grasslands at the top of the hill contribute to the splendor of the mountains. A windbreak that produces an endless stream of winds is also present. The natural environment may be explored quite well here.
Starting from Maryville Junction, the trek will go. The concrete road leading to the mountain and a Kovil are your first two encounters. You will then arrive to a tea estate. Your path will now get shorter and you'll be traveling along a short footpath. But it is easy to recognize. You will then enter a tiny pine tree forest. You may reach the first viewing point after an hour of walking. It truly is fantastic. You may view beautiful images of the area.
Most travelers complete their trek at the vista point. But in order to reach the peak, you should go on. The Horton Plains' surface is remarkably similar to the landscape. Mana trees and vegetation like the Sahara may be seen. The steep descent to the bottom is comparable to the end of the world. You can reach the Kabaragala Mountains' top after over two hours of climbing. The panorama from the peak is really breathtaking. You'll definitely be astounded!

Hikkaduwa is located about 100km south of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. The area is well known for its coral sanctuary, the proximity of wonderful scuba diving sites to explore and having a top surfing beach. With its unique beach culture and vibe, Hikkaduwa has long been one of the more popular beach resorts in Sri Lanka. In the center of Hikkaduwa, a protected lagoon creates a beautiful and safe snorkeling area. Further south, where the currents are stronger, surfing is the dominant water activity. The impressive coral reef runs just offshore and is populated by exotic fish and sea turtles that occasionally come ashore to lay their eggs.
Hikkaduwa was only a little fishing community about 30 to 40 years ago. However, it has evolved into one of Sri Lanka's top tourist destinations since the early 1980s. Hikkaduwa is well-known among tourists for its natural wonders, including its broad, spotless beaches, coral gardens, ocean with pure water, and scorching sun. Along with a vibrant nightlife, Hikkaduwa draws visitors who want to participate in water activities including scuba diving, snorkeling, and surfing. The popularity of wind and kite surfing is also rising.
Hikkaduwa, which is central to many other excellent tourist spots in Sri Lanka and is accessible by rail and bus, is 100 kilometers from Bandaranaike International Airport. From October through April is Hikkaduwa's busiest travel season. Surfers from Australia, the UK, Japan, Italy, Israel, the United States of America, and many other countries visit Sri Lanka's primary surfing location, Hikkaduwa, every year. The Hikkaduwa region has 3 to 4 surf spots with warm, clean water. Reef breaks make up most of the surf spots. Each location has a flat reef and a deep bottom. The wave height varies during the season from 2 to 7 feet. You may surf the "A" frame-shaped waves at the main point, often known as the "major reef," in either way.

The revered Kandy Esala Perahera is celebrated to worship the four Guardian godsVishnu, Kataragama, Natha, and Goddess Pattini as well as the precious tooth relic of Lord Buddha. Esala full moon day, which occurs between July and August, is when the pageant is held. The Diyawadana Nilame, also known as the chief lay head or trustee of the Dalada Maligawa, will decide on the final dates. The tentative date for the year 2022 will be the 02nd to 12th August. This extravagant event, which is regarded as the biggest in all of south Asia, is a reflection of Sri Lanka's religious and cultural values. The pageant is packed with traditional dancers and other acts, including the unique "Wewal Natuma" that can only be seen in Sri Lanka. The Perahara doesn't end there; to make it more enthralling and vivid, it also has several tuskers and elephants, traditional drums, torch bears, fire eaters, jugglers, and acrobats. History of Kandy Esala Perahera The Esla and Dalada were combined to create the modern Esala Perahera. Esala Perahera, which dates to the third century BC, was a ceremony carried out to ask the gods to send rain so that crops may be grown.
when the Kingdom was conquered by the British in 1815. The British government presented the Buddhist clergy with a sacred tooth relic from Lord Buddha. The parade was forbidden. It is said that this embargo caused the country to experience a severe drought. Governor Edward Bance then made the decision to hold the procession continually on the suggestion of the Kandyan chief and Mahanayaka Thero (head monks). . Sembuwatta Lake in Sri Lanka
Tumblr media
In Matale District, Sri Lanka, Sembuwatta Lake is a man-made body of water created from natural spring water close to Campbell's Lane Forest Reserve. A terrific place to get lost in contemplation and reflect on the amazing sights you've seen while traveling in Sri Lanka is the vast expanse of deep blue ocean, which is framed by misty mountains and tea gardens.
Sembuwatta Lake, a wonderful location with natural spring water, is one of the hill country's most magnificent attractions. It reflects the natural beauty of the area and is tucked away among the vast tea plants. It is definitely worth the effort to ascend the lovely green mountains with a dense pine forest that tower above the lake. The lake is surrounded by summer houses and cottages, and a pool filled with fresh spring water is located close by.
The lake, which is 1,140 meters above sea level, is surrounded by the Cambell's Land forest reserve. Visitors may unwind and feel serene in the foggy, cold environment that surrounds the lake, which is surrounded by tea-covered slopes and pine trees. The abundance of adventure activities offered, including zip line, swan/motor boat rides, canoeing, and hiking, places the lake at the top as a destination for leisure and family tourism. Since the lake is rather deep (30–40 ft), bathing and swimming are not permitted there; instead, a separate pool was constructed for that purpose.
The British started growing tea in the region and utilized the land around the lake as a polo field. A adjacent tea plant was developed in 1949, and the lake was later constructed to provide energy for it. Even though the facility is long gone, the lake's energy still powers the nearby homes. According to local mythology, a factory worker reportedly discovered a brass pot (Sembuwa) by a natural spring. He left the nation with the artifact, and his son eventually constructed a kovil near the spring's source. It is still possible to view the kovil's remnants. After then, the region was given the name Sembuwatta, which literally translates to "the Brass pot estate."
In 2005, the lake was transformed into a vacation spot with summer cabins, a guest house, and a swimming pool. Elkaduwa Plantations presently oversees its administration. Radley Dissage, the superintendent, was in charge of this significant transformation effort.

Yala National Park in Sri Lanka
Tumblr media
The second-largest and most popular national park in Sri Lanka, Yala National Park is located along the Indian Ocean. The park is made up of five blocks, two of which are now accessible to the general public, as well as adjacent parks. The blocks are identified by their unique designations, such as Block 1 for Ruhuna National Park and Block 2 for Kumana National Park, or "Yala East" for the nearby area. It is located in Southern Province and Uva Province in the southeast of the nation. The park is roughly 300 kilometers (190 miles) from Colombo and has a total area of 979 square kilometers (378 sq mi). Yala was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and it was one of Sri Lanka's first two national parks, along with Wilpattu, when it was established in 1938. The variety of wild creatures in the park is its best-known feature. It is crucial for the preservation of aquatic birds, leopards, and elephants in Sri Lanka.
Around Yala, there are three animal sanctuaries and six national parks. National Park Lunugamvehera is one of the biggest. The northeast monsoon is when the park receives the majority of its rainfall because it is located in a dry, semi-arid climate zone. Yala is home to a variety of habitats, including freshwater and marine wetlands as well as moist monsoon forests. It is one of Sri Lanka's 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs). Six Sri Lankan indigenous bird species are among the 215 bird species found in Yala. The park features 44 animals that have been identified, and it boasts one of the greatest numbers of leopards in the world.
