Mystery Scene is one of my favorite magazines and I almost missed this issue due to procrastinating on renewing. My buddy @oyejohn52 has a wonderful profile on Hallie Ephron in this issue and favorite of mine Linda Greenlaw is also featured. Then there's Sara Paretsky writing about Sisters In Crime. Awesome issue! 🕵🏻‍♀️🕵🏾 #mysteryscenemagazine #hallieephron #lindagreenlaw #mysterywriters #saraparetsky #sistersincrime #mysterynovels #crimefiction

Psychological thrillers appeals to me more than romance... Sadistic? Masochistic? Psychotic? Oh lawd. IDK why...maybe because I love watching thriller films 😉 Always on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding. Crazyyyyyyyy! Mind-boggling mind games, yikes! It must be so scary being in the mind of a sociopath and a psychopath. Tsk tsk. All brilliant authors on my TBR list. #SandraBrown #MirrorImage #LizNugent #UnravellingOver #LyingInWait #PamelaCrane #AniaAhlborn #MindyMcGinnis #BrendanReichs #Nemesis #KateMoretti #TheBlackbirdSeason #TheVanishingYear #JenniferEgan #ManhattanBeach #AlessandraTorre #TheGhostWriter #HollySeddon #JaneRobbins #WhiteBodies #JessicaKnoll #LuckiestGirlAlive #LauraMarshall #FriendRequest #CateHolahan #LiesSheTold #KairaRouda #BestDayEver #HelenCallaghan #DearAmy #StephanieDanler #YouShouldHaveKnown #GirlInPieces #SJWatsons #DanyaKukafka #WendyWalker #EmmaInTheNight #AllIsNotForgotten #ELockhart #GenuineFraud #WeWereLiars #TheDrowningGirls #TheWomanWhoCouldntScream #DanielleDickson #TammyCohen #ACureForMadness #BrendaNovak #RobertBryndza #GillyMacmillan #AlexDay #TimJohnston #ETEllison #LieToMe #AnnaSnoekstra #OnlyDaughter #HallieEphron #RenaOlsen #AlexLake #CopyCat #HeatherGudenkauf #SibelHodge #Duplicity #SarahSchmidt #SeeWhatIHaveDone #ScaachiKoul #SarahHealy #TheSistersChase #AmandaRobson #Obsession #CLTaylor #PeterSwanson #HerEveryFear #MeganMiranda #SaraFlanneryMurphy #ThePossessions #AliLand #GoodMeBadMe #JanelleBrown #WatchMeDisappear #SarahPinborough #BehindHerEyes #KateWhite #TheSecretsSheKeep #LoriRaderDay #TheDayIDied #DennisLehane #ChevyStevens #NeverLetYouGo #MaryKubica #EveryLastLie #ErinKelly #HeSaidSheSaid #JulieAnnePeters #DianeChamberlain #TheSilentSister #RileySager #FinalGirls #DeanMayes #CarolineMitchell #Witness #LouiseDouglas #VictoriaFox #TheSilentFountain #CaiteDolanLeach #DeadLetters #ChristinaKovac #TheCutaway #ShariLapena #AStrangerInTheHouse #LisaJewell #KarinSlaughter #ClareMackintosh #ISeeYou #ILetYouGo #BlakeCrouch #DarkMatter #MeganAbbott #YouWillKnowMe 📚 #Books #Bookworm #Read #GoodReads #eReaderPrestigio #Thriller #Psychological #Suspense #BookStagram

"There Was an Old Woman" and "The Future of Us"
"There Was an Old Woman" by Hallie Ephron started out as a great story, filled with a smart curator who understood the importance of history and sharing that with everyone. She discovers that yet again her alcoholic mother is in the hospital and her sister has given up trying to help, it's her turn. So our curator travels back home to discover the house is basically rotting from the inside and she has to clean it up before it gets condemned. She runs into the neighbor next door, who happens to be a 91 year old woman who's nephew is convinced needs to be moved into a nursing home. What follows is supposed to be a novel of thrills and suspense as it is told from both the point of view of the curator and the old woman. What really ends up happening is that the author doesn't just leave bread crumbs to what's happening, but entire loaves of bread on the trail. By page 60 of the 298 novel I figured out the plot and what was going on, and tried to stay in the suspense she wanted to create, but honestly was just giving up and getting frustrated that it kept going on and on the same points. I appreciated the history lessons that she provided, it was probably the only thing that kept my attention. Looking into her other published novels I was disappointed in seeing she's written two books about writing mystery and suspense, but seemed to not take her own advice. Maybe I've just read too many mystery novels and seen too many detective shows. I wouldn't suggest this unless you're easily duped when it comes to reading mysteries.
"The Future of Us" by Jay Asher is one that I've been waiting for from my library for 3 or so months, and kept questioning if I should actually read it or just give up and move on. I had read "Thirteen Reasons Why" which was good, and so I was really eager to read this one, but after waiting I was worried that the build up in my head would ruin it. Shouldn't have been worried, was a really good book. The whole concept is that in 1996 two teenagers log into the internet for the first time and are met with their future selves. What follows is them trying to understand how their lives had led to those points in the future, and changing things in the present to change their future. It's a great coming-of-age novel as they try to understand what it means to be happy and what do they really want. It has a typical happy fluff ending, but it's one of those novels where I'm not disappointed that it ended happy. I've read a lot of YA fiction where I want to know what happens to the characters after the story ended, but in this novel I was content knowing that the characters had discovered how to live their lives and trusted in the characters that they would continue to use the skills. Which is a rare quality in characters. Usually I feel that they're too stupid to continue making the right choices, or that they haven't really figured everything out, but with Asher's novel I'm content knowing that even if they don't end up together, they will grow into wonderful people that work towards making themselves and others happy. Which I think is a beautiful feeling to have towards a novel.
