Honestly, I wish if Kazama just kidnapped Chizuru in Harada's route for once and all. I wish if he took her away from Harada even if by using force or hurting her.

This was supposed to be for @asususasa but in the middle of writing I thought this could be useful for someone else, so here's Tacky's general list of otome recs. It took me over an hour to write so I'm not proofreading it.
DS
Not much to say here because back in those days otome games didn't get localized. The stand outs are Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 1st Love Plus and Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 2nd Season, who have English fan translations. Slice of life games where you play as the protagonist through her three years of high school. And if you feel like a student-teacher romance that would make Sakura Kinomoto's mom proud, these are your games.
PSP
Still well into the no localizations era with one exception: Hakuouki Demon of the Fleeting Blossom. Not recommending it on PSP because there are better versions. Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 3rd Story Premium also has a fan translation and should be played over its DS counterpart because it has added functionalities. Sadly this time around the teacher is a secret character and a shota.
3DS
There's Hakuoki Memories of the Shinsengumi. Still not recommended because we can do better.
PS3
Hakuouki Stories of the Shinsengumi includes the original game and the fandisk with some neat animations added. This is the version to play if you want the original experience. If you want even more routes, go for another version.
Vita
Hakuoki Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms, Collar x Malice and Amnesia are the best games you can get for the Vita imo. Some people dig a lot the Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk and Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly (I've only played BB, it was good but wasn't the best; wouldn't rate it as high as the others). There's Code Realize and its two fandisks (Future Blessings and Wintertide Miracles) and many people swear by them, but while I liked the common route in the first game, the rest didn't do it for me. You can find all of these except CxM and the CRs on Steam, and the Hakuoki games get dirst cheap on sale. Best bang for your buck of the saga. The CR games have PS4 ports and CxM has a Switch one, which you already know.
Switch
*rolls up sleeves* LET'S GO.
To get it out of the way: Hakuouki KW and EB are getting a Switch rerelease and a new translation and will be released as a single game, Hakuoki Chonicles of Wind and Blossom, on August 1st.
Collar x Malice fucking nails the mystery and lowkey horror vibes with and excellent plot that's interconnected in every route. CxM Unlimited is its fandisk and only recommended if you really have the CxM itch, because it's mostly fluff and the little plot there is is at most functional. It has a route where Ichika joins Adonis and you get to see its inner workings though. That was very interesting.
Bustafellows is 100% found family vibes with a very assertive protagonist. It's a mystery/action story and the team dynamics are sort of Ocean's 11-ish. Hilarious, heartbreaking at times, I've never felt more dread in a game than heading towards the basement in a certain's guy's route. There are two unlockable stories after you finish the routes of the guys, one of which I thought was glorious, another which sets up a sequel and is a big downer but I also really liked. It gets heavy at times with murder, suicide, sexual assault, human trafficking, among other kinds of violence, but despite it, it's generally a very funny and upbeat game. We're getting the sequel next year. Also available on PC.
Café Enchanté baits you with the premise of being a girl who manages a coffee shop patronized by handsome supernatural beings, so it's a real surprise when the cannibalism shows up. Anyway. Great game, but I'm afraid saying more would kind of defeat the point. Reminds me of Megami Tensei games, so if coffee shop AUs with supernatural world-ending threats are your thing, go for it. Just be warned that the fandom has kind of collectively agreed that poster boy's route never happened.
Birushana is a hidden gem that goes on sale super cheap and is also probably a hit or miss thing. You play as the legendary Yoshitsune, who in this game is a girl disguising her gender, but she's an amazing warrior as in history. It has the best otome couple I've ever seen, bar none, with Yoshitsune and Noritsune. The game is worth the price just to see them fall in love on the battlefield and watch Noritsune chug down Respect Women Juice all the way through it. The thing is... the rest of routes aren't great. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed how utterly unhinged they got at times, but the plot got worse as it deepened. Still. Noritsune. And I loved that most of the guys respected her as a warrior and were aware she was as capable or a better warrior than them and she didn't need a man to protect her. Very refreshing. One of my faves got done dirty by the translation because they started pulling lines out of thin air to make him creepier. Just him. Why. It's not like he needed the help.
Virche Evermore Error Salvation is also a good one if you can handle continuous drama and see egregiously bad science and say, "You know what? It's magic. Humans in this world are just built different." The worldbuilding is really interesting and the characters very enjoyable, though they don't feature a lot in each other's routes or aren't that friendly with each other. The continuous tragedy may tire you out, or maybe it'll work and emotionally destroy you. It didn't get any emotional reaction out of me until a certain point near the end, but I enjoyed the game a lot, nevertheless. We're getting the sequel this November and I'm really looking forward to it.
Variable Barricade: a fun romp where a young heiress has to chose a fiancé among the four disaster bachelors her grandpa has selected. It's not really similar to Ouran, but it reminded me a little of it at times. It's a pretty light game. The BFF is a gothic lolita otaku who has the time of her life shipping you with the guys, and the butler... oh boy the butler.
Amnesia, as I mentioned earlier, has a PC port as well as the Vita version, as well as two localized fandisks for the Switch (Amnesia x Crowd) that I can't speak of because I haven't played them yet. The protagonist has supernatural amnesia and must piece together her life while avoiding that other people realize she's lost her memory. It's a super intriguing game the first time you play, really nailed the being completely and utterly lost in the protagonist's shoes. A required play to get in on the cage jokes. It's sort of a rite of passage for otome gamers.
Jack Jeanne has probably the best group dynamics of any otome I've seen. I think some people have issues with the protagonist because they find her passive, but to me she felt the complete opposite. Everybody is adorable. A sentimental story of hard work, being young and and fighting for your dreams, 10/10, no notes. I lied, there's a note: Tanakamigi deserved a route! Where is our Tanakamigi route! щ(゜ロ゜щ)
Last but not least at all, the two Piofiores. Mafia games where all trigger warnings you can think of apply. Well, maybe not the cannibalism, that's still Café Enchanté's crowning glory. Fated Memories, the first one, has its ups and downs, but has very enjoyable characters, rock-solid worldbuilding, an amazing atmosphere set in 1920s Italy with a jazzy soundtrack that ends up living rent free in your brain. The last routes of the first game, Gil's and Finale, are worth the full price of the game alone. Piofiore Episodio 1926 is a masterpiece of the otome genre. It doesn't have a single boring route, and the final stretch (Advent Calendar-Alternativa-Secret Character route) has the best writing I've seen in an otome. Lots of points of view and situations interconnecting, an excellent final couple, top notch interactions between the main characters. Just the best.
#honorable mention to olympia soirée the most heterosexual otome i've ever played#i felt a visceral rejection towards it so i cannot recommend it#but i acknowledge it's a great game if you don't mind the constant talk of reproducing#tacky ramblings

What's the deal with Kaoru?
Welcome to the “I should be working on my fic but instead I think about Kaoru” of the day!
I do not hide it, Kaoru is my poor little mew mew, my pathetic wet gremlin. He makes everyone’s life harder in Hakuouki (when allowed) and it would be the understatement of the century to say that there is something wrong with him. But, this is not what I want to discuss, or at least I don't want to discuss what's wrong with his mind. No, I want to discuss what is wrong with Kaoru as a oni. Kaoru is a pure blood oni in Hakuouki, and yet no one in the story seems to acknowledge this fact and the worldbuilding itself seems to ignore it.
So what's the deal with Kaoru? (there might be a following post later, once I have finished my playthrough of Hakuouki: Fleeting blossom of the dawn, for now I am basing this mainly on the movies and the anime)
Let's start with the basics of what we know. Kaoru is Chizuru's older twin (and seeing how much they look alike I really doubt they are the third secret kind of twins that can have different parents).
(I mean look at this: Souji is demonstrating it for us)
This means that Kaoru is a pure blood oni as much as she is. Yet, in both anime and movies we never seen him turn into his oni form before drinking the Ochimizu. It could be that he never had any good reason to do so. Indeed, other pure blood onis do not turn often and Chizuru herself does not turn at all (not even a beginning of transformation) in the anime. Besides, we see him use oni powers: healing abilities, supernatural speed (or mild teleportation?), wind control?, etc. Yet, you get this feeling that contrary to Kazama who is naturally superior/on even field with the best/most motivated of the rasetsu in his oni form, Kaoru needs to take the Ochimizu to catch back to both Kazama and the best rasetsus. The only time we see him transform in a "oni" form in the movies is after he drank it and he has characteristics of both oni (horns) and rasetsu (red eyes).
Furthermore, Nagumo Kaoru was born Yukimura Kaoru and yet no one seems to recognize him as the heir to the Yukimura legacy despite him being Chizuru's older twin brother. No one ever calls him Yukimura Kaoru! And to this I must add that apparently Chizuru's blood is necessary for Kodo's little rasetsu kingdom, yet he has Kaoru's active support (or are they partners? I personally headcanon that Kaoru thinks of each other as partners without really trusting Kodo and Kodo is manipulating Kaoru). True, fraternal twins are not closer genetically than any other siblings (and generally speaking brother-sister twins are fraternal except if they are the fourth kind of secret twins) so Kaoru might not just have what it takes, but still it is odd to see this three things together.
So, to go back on our original question let’s propose some hypothesis on what's the deal with Kaoru. These hypothesis are that, hypothesis, and they are not mutually exclusive. Also do not hesitate to tell me your thoughts on the matter:
The Yukimura clan is matriarcal (I don't know if Toki no Kizuna: Sekigahara Kitan gave extra info on this?), meaning that Kaoru is not considered the heir because he was never the heir. It is not impossible but seeing how Kazama treats Chizuru in the original anime I going to make a not so wild guess and say that not all demon clans are matriarcal.
Kaoru was officially adopted by the Nagumos and he can't just be a Yukimura again. Besides, after killing apparently everyone/most people (☺️) in the Nagumo clan, he became its new official head so maybe the oni world does not accept plurality of offices.
Not all pure blood onis are equal in their gifts and powers. Kaoru is just naturally weaker than some (one the headcanons I am following in my fic).
Oni powers must be trained to develop properly (an other headcanon I am following in my fic) and no one bothered to teach Kaoru or he was purposely sabotaged by the Nagumos.
The Nagumos clan did something pretty bad (understatement of the century) to him that eventually made him weaker. I am thinking experiments here.
Here are the potential answer I have found for what's the deal with Kaoru. What do you think of them? Do you have other hypothesis?

In an au where the shinsengumi captains are villains, who would the hero be?
You mean they all are villains and one of them is not?
In that case, I believe it depends on the plot since each one of them has a different way of thinking.

I find it funny that the first scene in White Cat Legend 2 is reminding me that my favorite character General Qiu did massacre a city with his army. Again, I want to warn people who’s going to watch White Cat Legend donghua. I know they have cute character designs but it has war scenes that might traumatize you. Its a mature donghua for adults. I really commend them for their well-done sound design and great visuals in that scene. General Qiu looks indeed terrifying.
Anyway, my reaction to that is hilarious. I’m like “Its fine. I’m used to it. I have questionable faves like Hijikata and Jiang Cheng after all.”
Then I noticed that all of them are purple questionable bishies LOL
1. General Qiu Shenji (White Cat Legend) - He was introduced as ruthless general and his loyalty lies to the empress but not really. He was seen interacting with the unkillable cannibal character to do shady business but strangely interfere when Li Bing(protag) is hurt. The empress and her people also implied that General Qiu might betray them. His motivation is quite vague for now but it seem season 2 will explore more his character. That he used to be the young prince’s bodyguard and his past. I’m like in Li Bing’s shoes I don’t know why he did the massacre but based on the season 2 opening visuals, it seem there are powerful people behind his actions. He’s like a sacrificial pawn in a big board game. In his character profile, it says he dislike war but obviously contradict his actions.
2. Jiang Cheng (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) - Notorious Yunmeng Jiang sect leader for his bad temper, hunting demonic cultivators and leading the siege against the demonic cultivator, Wei Wuxian(protag). He’s known for his hatred over Wei Wuxian and demonic cultivators. But it seem despite that, Wei Wuxian stated that it wasn’t Jiang Cheng who killed him. Jiang Cheng also act as the supporting guardian for his nephew Jin Ling all these years. It looks like he has a soft spot for the child despite his strict exterior. At the end of the story, it was revealed he cared about Wei Wuxian and just totally misunderstood him but choose to no longer go after him. In the after story extra, it was implied Jiang Cheng was helping his nephew about sect stuff.
3. Hijikata Toshizo (Demon of Fleeting Blossom) - Inspired from the historical figure, the demon vice-commander of Shinsengumi that serves the Shogunate. He was feared and respect by his subordinates. He is a strict and ruthless commander to the point of establishing bushido aka their samurai code that states the penalty for breaking it is seppuku (killing oneself). In the Hakuouki anime, it also shows how firm he is in doing shady business for the survival of Shinsengumi and supporting Kondou Isami. Such as forcing his subordinates to take part in rasetsu(fake demons) experiment and ambushing people that might interfere their goals. In the prequel, that screenshot image I chose Serizawa threatened a geisha after she talks back to the samurai. Hijikata became a mediator and offered himself to cut off the geisha’s hair as punishment. Its a traumatizing scene for me because hair is very important to women especially in that period and profession. ANYWAY! Despite Hijikata’s shady side, he genuinely care about Kondou as leader and Okita Souji’s health. Souji and Hijikata has siblings kinda relationship in Hakuouki where Hijikata acts as the older brother who scolds him whenever he disobey or tease him.
#i have weird taste#anime man who did shady things is attractive ok#and match it with moe gap that they have soft side#perfect#hijikata toshizo#qiu shenji#white cat legend#hakuouki#jiang cheng#mo dao zu shi

So out of curiosity I just went thru my old notebooks to try and find my notes on the 1st Hakuouki game. I think it was the 1 called Demon of the Fleeting Blossom? Or something like that
Anyway, I know I still have those notes becuz they were in a spiral bound notebook and I don't throw those away
I'm a hoarder and I write everything down all the time. So I have kept every notebook I've ever owned
So I just went thru them and OH BOY
I think I just took some fucking psychic damage. There r so many old fanfictions in there that I've never posted. And like, old writing that goes all the way back to middle school
#i got so distracted from my original goal#but seriously i need to get rid of that stuff#it literally hurts me mentally to look thru it#and i never qant anyone else to look thru it#but also im a hoarder and cant bring myself to throw any of it away#back into storage it all goes

MOVED TO VENGENCEWISE
Rules | About | Verses | Headcanons | Mun
Due to the nature of Hakuouki, this blog may contain dark themes such as “vampirism”, blood, violence, angst, murder, and other dark themes. If it’s not something you’re comfortable with, I would suggest not following this blog as I will not tone down how my muse is.
Canon and history says Souji died from tuberculosis. However THIS SOUJI IS NOT DEAD NOOOOOPE. HE’S ALIVE AND BY DEFAULT HE HAS RECOVERED FROM TUBERCULOSIS (and is now married to Chizuru even though canon says no), though I’m not against writing him still struggling from his illness either
Mun has only played through Souji’s, and Chikage’s routes in Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms. IDC about spoilers about the other routes so please feel free to spoil away.
Mun has only seen the Reimeiroku anime, the 2022 liveaction drama, the SSL liveaction drama, and the 2021 OVA/Demon Fleeting Blossom OVA. Mun is kind of afraid to watch the following animes that isn’t Reimeiroku (or the Demon Fleeting Blossom OVA) cuz of how dirty they did to my boy Souji, and also not being much of a fan of the canon route. Don’t let this stop you from writing with me though. I respect everyone’s thoughts and opinions.
My rules apply for all of my blogs. Shipping stuff may vary though, but for romantic shipping, Souji will only be romantically shipped with any Chizurus out there cuz it is who I can only see him getting romantically involved with. This does not mean I will only ship with one Chizuru, so any Chizurus out there have my permission to come at my Souji as long as we are mutuals.
List of my sideblogs on a doc just so y'all know (and in case anybody is interested)

A lot of icons I use of Souji were made by iconsbyafangirl
