AU - In a world with no war there is a yearly meeting with world leaders. Hakoda, Bato, Kya, Ursa and Ozai always get together and have a blast every time.

Azula finally is able to leave the Asylum with hopes to reconcile with her mother only to find out that she recently passed away, Azula loses her ability to fire bend after hearing the news and becomes inconsolable from the loss of her mother (and eventually for her bending). Worried that Azula will relapse, Zuko sends Azula to the South Pole as an Ambassador of the Firenation and to be with Katara (who recently amicably broke up with Aang) hoping they can bond over the loss of their mothers and to have a father figure in Chief Hakoda.

Other events that take place:

Aang helps Azula go to the spirit world to commune with her mother

Azula learns from the Masters

Azula reconciles with Mai and Ty Lee

Hear me out! Chief!Katara x Ambassador!Zuko

I'm sure it's already been done before, but imagine an AU where Iroh dies and Lu Ten lives and becomes Fire Lord. Lu Ten's experiences during the war and his father's death give him a different outlook on his country and his family. He becomes Fire Lord after Sozin's death and decides to change things for the better.

(This would include him stepping up for Zuko and Azula. I like to imagine he's a huge dork who's constantly getting bullied by them. Idk what would happen with Ozai and Ursa here, but I like to think Ozai is just a hermit loser who pulls away from all of them including Azula which allows Ursa to start getting through to her fully in a way she couldn't before. Somewhat mentally stable Azula ftw)

Anyway, because of Lu Ten's change of heart, he decides to start with reparations in the Southern Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom villages. For the Southern Water Tribe, this allows for infrastructure developments which means easier contact with the Northern Tribe as well as rebuilding.

Hakoda brings his kids to the Southern Water Tribe for their first point of contact in decades and Sokka is immediately smitten with Princess Yue. She's been betrothed already, but Hakoda (with his feminist icon mother Kanna we stan) gently dissuades the NWT chief from forcing his literal child into marriage.

(And oops! He accidentally started a feminist revolution in the north. Well, it was a combination of that and tiny Katara proudly going around and telling the NWT women about the brave female members of their tribe that fought and lost their lives in the war. You know that meme about how Kanna sent Katara to kick Pakku's ass? Here, it's more like she sent little Katara to cause an uprising to the point where it was either he starts teaching everyone who wants to learn or they all boycott. In short, Pakku becomes the first person in the ATLA to get his ass cancelled)

Anyway! Sokka and Yue get married somewhere down the line as adults. But since she's the only NWT heir it means he has to rule with her in the North. And since Katara is the only remaining SWT heir, she becomes chief. Under Chief Katara's rule, the SWT proposers. And once a certain escaped prisoner comes back after the war ends, Katara becomes powerful too.

Zuko takes an interest in learning about other cultures. For so long, he was told that the Fire Nation was the superior nation and that they were doing the right thing by enforcing their rule on the other nations. With Lu Ten's reform, he's become curious as to what made his cousin change his mind. So Lu Ten decides to take him with him on diplomatic visits. Zuko experiences and learns what makes the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes different, but also great.

Once he visits the SWT he's immediately enthralled by its compassionate, brave, and powerful leader. Although, Katara isn't particularly impressed with the bumbling ambassador who can't seem to form words around her.

Zutara AUs are so fun that not even I can resist them. I like this because it's a cute reversal on Fire Lord Zuko x Diplomat Katara

So much to love!!! Lu Ten the Loser Lord! Kanna the feminist icon weaponizing her granddaughter to cancel Pakku! Hama living in the SWT (can we have bodyguard Hama??? I’ve been thinking about General Hama in @lykegenia’s The Things We Hide like, once a month, ever since I read it back in March and I think bodyguard Hama is a great variation…you’re never too old to girlboss). Yuekka ruling the NWT! ZUKO BEING A DUMBASS AROUND CHIEF KATARA PLEASE!

I think Ambassador Zuko is the funniest idea ever for like, many many reasons, but the funniest thing to me is how in this AU Lu Ten would need to choose nepo baby Zuko or nepo baby Azula as the diplomat and both are…kinda bad? Zuko would genuinely want to learn to be diplomatic but it does not come easily to him and he would start international diplomatic crises by accident, while Azula does understand diplomacy as a skill but arguably too well and would start international diplomatic crises on purpose.

anyway yes Zuko would absolutely lose all faculties of speech and possibly thinking once he encounters Katara, who is so passionate and thoughtful and devoted to justice! And she’d be like “who’s that Fire Nation idiot who can’t even string three words together? Doesn’t he know reparations are serious business??” And the people from the other nations would be confused because they’re like, Ambassador Zuko is really fair and actually a pretty smart guy what are you on about? THEN maybe she’d think he was doing it on purpose to undermine her…sorry I have to insert a classic misunderstanding somewhere…

ANYWAY if anyone has fic recs for Ambassador Zuko and Chief Katara PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I haven’t read any new Zutara fics in months because my autism compass changed direction, but new year new me etc

zutara shippers will defend ANYONE as long as they ship zutara. like why are several anons fighting for lfr’s right as a white woman to write rape fanfics about katara throwing sokka and hakoda under the bus so that the colonizer can liberate katara or w/ever. imo, lfr’s fanfic represents very well all the issues with the zutara community:

important people in katara’s life (sokka and hakoda) who canonically CARE for katara and love her will be demonized

zuko becomes katara’s savior, the only person who apparently can take her issues seriously. he’s treated as Katara’s liberator.

zuko allowed iroh to say whatever the fuck he wanted about his own sister and didn’t say a damn thing when iroh sexually harassed june. if iroh (whom zuko ideolizes) were to ever sexually assault anyone (again) zuko isn’t DOING SHIT. he’d react in the exact type of way that sokka and hakoda are portrayed in the fanfic. and if we’re talking about book 1 zuko he literally ties katara up to a tree and uses her for extortion and he knocks her out so hard that she’s unconscious the whole night, while chanting a pro-imperialist line (“i rise with the sun,” which is a reference to japan’s rising sun flag. the fn’s military is directly based on imperial japan). not to mention that zuko circulates katara in a predatory way, likely something that he subconsciously picked up when ozai would do the same thing to ursa. meanwhile sokka canonically tackles and berates aang (as he should) for accidentally burning katara. like zuko is not katara’s liberator in the way that the shippers insist he is, ESPECIALLY not book 1 zuko.

fun. x ATLA

Idk if anyone else in the fandom listens to fun., but I'm a big fan of pretty much the whole Some Nights album. I was listening to it last week (yes, even the Some Nights - Intro, which I don't vibe with) because it was speaking to me in terms of ATLA characters (certain songs reminded me of certain characters).

"But Turtle, Nate Reuss wasn't focused on ATLA when he was writing this album"

Ok, and? I'm gonna have some fun with this!

So here's each song and the character I think it fits (not all are exact fits & not every song is included, but most are)

1. Some Nights - Sokka

"This is it, boys, this is war/what are we waiting for?" feels very Sokka to me, especially since he considers himself a warrior and is the protector of Wolf Cove after Hakoda and the other men leave to fight the fire nation. Also "I still see your ghost" could reference Kya, but more likely Yue, since Sokka says that he sees Katara's face when he tries to remember his mother. The line about the martyr reminded me of Suki. Ok also the "miss my mom and dad for this" line?? Come on. Ok BUT "my heart is breaking for my sister and the con she called love/and then I look into my nephew's eyes" is just SCREAMING a Zutara or Kataang fic of some sort. Come on, right?? It's just begging to be written. Overall, this is very existential crisis-Sokka to me.

2. We Are Young - Katara

Ok so I wasn't fully sure what song to give Katara and it just didn't feel right to leave her out so I deadass just gave her this one like 5 minutes ago, but it still works. It would also be AU-based, but hear me out. I'm assuming y'all are most likely to know this song out of all of them. So Katara's at a bar after breaking up with her boyfriend (Aang) and the Gaang's all here. "My seat's been taken by some sunglasses askin' bout a scar" would be Zuko asking about the scars on Katara's hands that she couldn't fully heal after Aang's firebending accident. "But between the drinks and subtle things/the holes in my apologies/you know I'm trying hard to take it back" feels very Aang to me, especially since he's immature. Then right after, I feel like it switches to a more Zutara vibe for most of the song. Also "the moon is on my side/I have no reason to run" with Katara is such a sick combo omg.

3. Carry On - Zuko

The lyrics are very angsty. "You swore and said we are not/we are not shining stars/this I know, I never said we are" feels like a very Zuko & Iroh interaction to me. And also "though I've never been through hell like that/I've closed enough windows to know you can never look back" !!!! Like that feels very Season 3 Zuko to me. Also, no matter what, Zuko is forced to carry on, whether it's with Ozai, Azula, the Gaang... Although don't get me wrong, Zuko does take back his destiny, but I'm referring more to how he can't give up. Also Ursa tells Zuko and he later says how he struggles and fights, even though it's hard. "And we talked and talked about how our parents will die/all our neighbors and wives" Zuko is very familiar with the concept of mortality, he nearly died and he loses his mother at a young age. I'm sure he worries about when Iroh will die, as well as his friends. I feel like Zuko has a line about people leaving him, but I can't find it. Ok next point "and it's nice to know when I was left for dead/I was found and now I don't roam these streets/I am not the ghost you are to me" is very reminiscent of Zuko's relationship (or lack thereof) with Ozai. Also "may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground" feels like a very Iroh line. Last point, "on our darkest day, when we're miles away/so we'll come and we'll find our way home" is very reminiscent of Zuko's redemption arc and how he returns home and retakes his place in the line of succession and becomes Fire Lord.

4. It Gets Better - Katara?

Honestly the "yes, I know it hurts at first/but it gets better" reminds me a lot of Katara. I also liked the line about fire in the sky and snow on the ground. Not too much else to say.

5. All Alone - Mai

I really encourage you guys to listen to this song, it was really interesting. The lyrics reminded me of Maiko, especially how Mai seems to not care about anything. The girl's voice reminded me a lot of Mai throughout the series, especially her interactions with Zuko. "I gave her to you/I don't need a toy/I thought you might appreciate it/I don't like the way it moves" reminds me of their interaction when Zuko tries to give Mai the shell on Ember Island. "How do you cry with inanimate eyes/you're never gonna smile/with the way that you're wired" also reminded me a lot of Mai's character throughout the series.

(I really like All Alright, but wasn't sure who it would fit well with)

6. One Foot - Toph

"I put one foot in front of the other" is very Toph, she is a fighter first and foremost. "I don't need a new love or a new life" also feels very her, Toph doesn't care as much about the more material things compared to the rest of the Gaang. I'm sure there's more that can be said about this connection, but I didn't really vibe with the song so much. Sorry Toph.

7. Out on the Town - Aang

Okay, Aang fans, I'm asking you to stick with me here. "Cause I know I'll never take the time/to unpack my missteps and call all of our friends" feels very much like season 3 Aang, where he doesn't face consequences for his actions and Bryke kinda places him on this pedestal of sorts. Also, this is a kataang breakup song to me. The chorus really feels like Aang to me, putting his feelings before those of other people, causing a scene, there being consequences (that he somehow gets out of, but that's not today's discussion). "But I'm waiting for the day you come back and say/'hey maybe I should change my mind'" reminds me of the first 2 times Aang kisses Katara and how he expects her to change her mind on how she feels about him. Also the repetition of "open up your heart".

Overall, I found the entire album to be very Zuko-coded.

De aged Azula anon returning with some headcanons!

But first, chapter 26 was incredible! I was hoping to see Azula finally meet Hakoda but after reading your chapter I think it's better that you had Sokka meet him and tell him about Azula first. And Azula going to the Eastern Air Temple with Aang, Ursa, and Suki is a nice change to canon. I don't know if I've said this but you adding in that Azula, not only is starting her redemption because she cares about Sokka but also because she realizes the Fire Nation was wrong is genius. I feel like a lot of fics would completely have Sokka telling Azula that the Fire Nation is wrong and then she has to believe him because she can't return to a Fire Nation base. So, I really like that you have a nice mix of the Gaang helping Azula realize FN propaganda and her wanting to discover more/discovering the truth herself. Finally, Zuko is making me angry. I have nothing else to say he's just really making me angry.

Headcanons!

One of the reasons Azula doesn't realize she's jealous of Suki/understand her crush on Sokka is because she's never had a crush before where she actually thinks the other person could really like her.

After Azula turns back to normal, she and Suki bond and become very close.

As an apology gift, Zuko teaches Azula how to redirect lightning (when she's 14 again).

After meeting Ozai in her six year old form, Azula has nightmares about him capturing her.

I actually was going to have Azula go with Sokka to Chameleon Bay, but then I got the idea of having her go with Aang to the Eastern Air Temple and really see for herself what her great grandfather did to the air nomads. I hate it when Azula redemption fics have her change her views because of romance. Like, she needs more than just "she's in love with x character". Doing it as simple as that is just boring. Yep, this is precisely why Azula doesn't realize why she doesn't like Suki and that she has feelings for Sokka.

They become best friends, much to everyone's shock. Suki still likes to tease Azula about her time as a child and just anything in general, much to her annoyance.

She'll be very happy to learn from him, considering what happens when....shit hits the fan XD

Bumi: Sorry I was sucking the milk out of this coconut. But it's true Hakoda, if you're gonna play a dog, be a dog.

Hakoda: Right... *gets on hands and knees* Woof.

Poppy and Kya: *pets him* Wow! He's so cute!

Ozai: Uh-oh! Looks like this dog has bugs in his hair!

Poppy and Kya: *jumps back* Gross!

Ozai: That's okay. I read online coffee is great for getting rid of fur bugs. *steals Ukano's drink*

Ursa: Maybe you shouldn't-

Kya: Ozai!

Ozai: *dumps coffee on Hakoda's head*

Hakoda: !!!

Ozai: What's the problem, dog?

Hakoda: *runs out of the classroom*

Kya: *runs after him* Hey what are you doing?

Hakoda: Calling my mom to tell her I want to go back to my old school!

Kya: Why?

Hakoda: Because I don't like having black coffee in my hair!

Kya: Then I'll get you some cream and sugar. Everything will be chill.

Hakoda, on the phone: Hey Mom-

Kya: *Steals his phone* Nope!

Hakoda: Give me back my Mom!

Kya: You're gonna quit this school on your first day just because of one mean guy?

Hakoda: It's not just him! I don't fit in with all this!

Kya: Okay, the school's not normal-

Hakoda, sarcastic: Really?

Kya: But neither are you. I've seen what you can do on stage. You're special. You're fantastic! You belong at this school. Normal's boring.

Hakoda:

[At home]

Hakoda: *Rewatching his performance*

Bato: You know, it doesn't even look like you're gonna pee yourself in this.

Hakoda: *rolls eyes*

Hakoda: Why?

Bato: So I won't be known as the guy whose cousin quit on the first day. *Playfully shoves Hakoda*

Hakoda: *laughs some*

Bato: And I think you were really good in the big showcase. That took guts.

[Next day]

Hakoda: *returns to class*

Kya: You're back!

Hakoda: Yeah. You're right. Normal's boring.

Bumi: Today's lesson, ABC Acting. Who wants to start?

Hakoda, raising his hand: I do.

Bumi: Alright, chose your players.

Hakoda: Kya, Poppy, Ursa, and... Ozai.

Ozai: ???

Hakoda: Yeah. You.

Bumi: Start with the letter P. Go!

Hakoda: Please go take a shower.

Ozai: Quit telling me what to do.

Ursa: Relax. Let's all try to get along.

Poppy: Totally!

Bumi: Your line had to start with the letter S.

Poppy: Aww S is the worse!

Bumi: Here's a piece of candy.

Poppy: Yay I love candy!

Bumi: Kya your go!

Kya: Something bit my toe.

Hakoda: Turtle bit her toe.

Ozai: Unbelievable that you're even here.

Ursa: Very immature of you to say that!

Kya: What if the turtle broke my toe?

Hakoda: X-rays are the only way to find out.

Ozai: U should shut up.

Ursa: Zap! I just healed your toe with my magic finger!

Kya: Thanks!

Bumi: Your line had to start with an A! Sit down!

Kya: Aww I just got my toe bone fixed.

Bumi: Hakoda, keep it rolling!

Hakoda: Aliens are the only ones who can heal by finger zapping.

Ozai: By the way! *blows raspberry at Hakoda*

Ursa: Correct. I am an alien.

Bumi: Oh plot twist!

Hakoda: Don't hurt me, please!

Ozai: Even though he's extremely annoying.

Ursa: Fainting. Can't breathe your Earth air.

Hakoda: Gah she fainted!

Hakoda: Obviously someone should.

Ozai: Please get hit by a bus.

Hakoda: Quite obnoxious of you to say.

Ozai: Really?

Hakoda: Sure was!

Ozai: Thanks!

Hakoda: Up your nose I see boogers!

Ozai: Very clever.

Hakoda: Wished you thought of it?

Ozai, pointing at his face: X marks the spot I want to punch!

Hakoda: Y-Your finger smells weird!

Ozai: Zero is what you are on a scale from on to ten!

Bumi: And back to the letter A!

Hakoda: As if I cared what you think!

Ozai: Better watch yourself!

Hakoda: Can't take it?

Ozai: Don't push me!

Hakoda: Eat your pants!

Ozai: YOU EAT YOUR PANTS! WAIT!

Bumi: Sorry Ozai. The next letter was-

Ozai: F! I KNOW!!! *glares at Hakoda then storms back to his seat*

Hakoda, helping Ursa up: Get up alien.

Ursa: Head still spinning.

Hakoda: I know what would make you feel better.

Ursa: Jumping jacks?

Hakoda: Kiss me.

Ursa: Let's do it. *They kiss*

Ozai: !!!
