"I hear we're handing out hugs," she suggested slyly. "Might I have one, too?"
-Freddie
[she doesn't wanna hug him she just wants to bother him]
He side eyed her, mouth twisting into a shape of disgust before he covered it, looking ready to retch. "Nuh-uh- I'm not even close enough to do that, you're probably coated in hairspray-"

If John Waters offered to turn your story into a movie would you go for it?
Hm. Admittedly I've only seen Pink Flamingos (I refuse to watch Hairspray) which is very unserious and like I associate him with very camp whereas I think my bullshit is a bit too serious (it comes with being a very boring person which I am), very NBC Hannibal gay than camp gay but at the same time I trust him, yanno? Plus maybe as a result my stuff could get (niche) famous and then I'd have a platform for Making Whatever I Want.
Frankly I'd watch the dark as hell comedy of afterlife au bullshit and laugh all the way...

Okay, I'm sorry, but Michelle Pfieffer did not do Miss Baltimore Crabs justice. Please, if this is your only way you've heard this song, check out the version by Kristen Chenowith on NBC Hairspray Live (2:35 for the main song, 5:25 for the reprise which to me shows more villainy and how she tries to justify her actions) or the original broadway recording by Linda Hart.
Villain Song Showdown Bracket B Round 1

Cog in the Machine (I Expect You to Die 3) - Villain: Dr. Roxana Prism

(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs (Hairspray) - Villain: Velma Von Tussle

LONG LIST OF THINGS THAT MAKE MY BLACK HEART FEEL SOMETHING.
NBC's Hairspray Live! ↳ “woke up today, feeling the way i always do; hungry for something that i can’t eat, when i hear that beat! that rhythm of town starts calling me down, it’s like a message from high above, calling me out to the smiles and the streets that i love! good morning, baltimore! everyday’s like an open door!”

Melissa I dropped my Hairspray CD earlier and broke the case 😭 my CD is fine tho thank god 💗
anyway do you have a favorite version of Hairspray?
i saw the "dropped your hairspray cd" and i was so distraught for you until i kept on reading the sentence. thank god the cd wasn't damaged!!
my answer to this is really complicated because in my gut i want to say the movie because that holds really big sentimental value for me. i first watched it with my friend in elementary school because she loved it, could sing and talk along to the whole movie kind of love, and from then on the movie and the songs from it have always been associated with her and our friendship. BUT at the same time i can't say it's my favorite version because the way they changed the plot and completely cut out or reworked some songs sucks and john travolta as edna was, let's just say, not the best choice (though after reading the movie's wiki i'll say he was a much better choice than the other people they were considering). i also can't say the 2016 live version is my favorite because, well, it just wouldn't be right to say one of NBC's live musical specials was my favorite version of any musical. and ariana grande sucked as penny her singing voice did not fit at all with the music or the other cast members. so i guess i have to say my Favorite version is the original broadway cast. that said, i've been listening to the live version the most, so there's that
it's funny you asked me this because i was just thinking about making my ideal hairspray playlist which would be me picking my favorite version of each song out of the 3 options on spotify. i think my most controversial option for that would be choosing the movie version of mama im a big girl now that's not even in the movie lol i really like that version with the 3 actresses who played tracy i think it's fun
but now, i have to ask you, what is your favorite version, kay??

Here are some that I know of, I have sorted them into available legally and available illegally.
Available legally:
Kinky Boots (West End cast)
Allegiance (with Lea Salonga, Telly Leung, George Takei, and Katie Rose Clarke!)
Miss Saigon (with Eva Noblezada)
Funny Girl (West End cast)
Into the Woods (West End cast)
42nd Street (West End cast)
The Wind in the Willows (West End cast)
Diana the Musical (on Netflix)
Cats
Billy Elliot
Fame
Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Tour (with Tim Minchin, not John Legend)
Godspell in Concert
Holiday Inn
Hetty Feather
Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill (with Audra McDonald)
Mr Saturday Night (with Billy Crystal and Shoshana Bean)
She Loves Me (with Jane Krakowski and Laura Benanti)
21 Chump Street (on YouTube, uploaded by the company that made it, with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lindsay Mendez, and Anthony Ramos)
Aladdin, a Musical Spectacular (NOT the Broadway show, a stage adaptation of the movie made for Disney Parks, on YouTube)
Tangled the Musical (made for Disney Cruise Line, available on the Disney Parks YouTube channel)
Oklahoma! (with Hugh Jackman, coming to cinemas sometime soon)
... and more!
A lot of these are available on Digital Theatre+ or BroadwayHD. Digital Theatre+ can be accessed through an educational institution's library or account, they have a lot of (but less) the musicals that are also available on BroadwayHD, so if you cannot afford another streaming service, they're a good option provided you are actively a student. BroadwayHD is like any other streaming service, but for theatre, I think it is on the cheaper end and they do a week-long free trial.
Available illegally:
Miss Saigon (the same one mentioned above)
Shrek the Musical (used to be available on Netflix but they took it off ☹️)
Everybody's Talking About Jamie (was released legally in the UK, but not in the US)
Waitress (non-union tour cast)
Rent (with Renee Elise Goldsberry)
Miss Saigon (with Lea Salonga)
Cabaret (with Alan Cumming as the Emcee)
Sunday in the Park with George (with Bernadette Peters)
Oklahoma! (BBC Proms concert version)
Rocky Horror Show
Bandstand
Kinky Boots (same production as is available legally)
... and more!
----
There are also a lot of Made for TV versions of musicals that do lean more into feeling like a movie, such as Bye Bye Birdie with Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams (currently on BroadwayHD, YouTube, Freevee, Pluto, Tubi- legally!! The latter four are free), Once Upon a Mattress with Carol Burnett as the Queen (used to be on Disney+- now it isn't, but you can rent it from Redbox!). I would be remiss to not mention the "Live!" musicals that many TV channels used to do regularly a few years ago, they're more pro shot than movie musical, but not a pro shot in the most classical sense. They feel less like a movie than the Made for TV movies. Some would include The Wiz Live, Hairspray Live, Peter Pan Live, The Sound of Music Live, Rent Live, Grease Live, Jesus Christ Superstar Live, and A Christmas Story Live. They used to be available on the respective channels' streaming service (ex. all the NBC ones used to be on Peacock) but at least for NBC, there is no legal way to watch them now unless you already bought the DVD. Grease Live is on Paramount+, so at least one is available legally.
---
Eek, sorry for going on a bit of a ramble- I'm very passionate about theatre being accessible to folks and I tried to only provide detail about exactly where to find these if said location was legal, I hope that's okay!
After all the talk of slime tutorials on here, I have been reminded of the general consensus that there should be more professional recordings of shows. So I would like to ask what shows actually do have proshots?
As for proshots that come to my mind now, I know Hamilton and Legally Blonde have somewhat well known proshots, Heathers got one not too long ago, and quite a few classics have recordings that were aired on PBS way back when (PBS ought to do that more often these days). I also think Cats has one and Les Mis and Phantom have those staged concerts that kind of fit the bill.
Hmm, good question! First, what counts as a proshot? 🤔 Are we only talking films of staged shows, and not movies/adaptations? So, for example, the Producers movie wouldn't be considered a proshot even though it's got the two Broadway stars and was overall quite faithful to the show? And are we not talking something like Encanto Live?
The ones I can think of offhand not on your list are Spongebob Squarepants, Newsies, By Jeeves, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat, whatever else ALW released during the pandemic to watch that I don't recall, and Into the Woods. If we're talking concerts, there's Sweeney Todd and Chess.
After that, I'd have to start cheating by looking up PBS's Great Performances episode list or things like Live from Lincoln Center.
Anyone got any other recs?
Note: As a personal ask, as y'all answer this please don't get too in depth on where you might find these to watch these days. This blog is meant to be about musical recommendations, not piracy recs. And it's nice to support theater with actual money when you can.

Stop Making Mediocre, Familiar Live Musicals On TV
Last week, NBC aired their yearly live musical: Annie. I watched it. It wasn’t awful (though Harry Connick Jr’s bald cap was). However, it did not need to be made. It’s not like no one knows the story of Annie. It’s not like there wasn’t a recent and decent movie remake of it in 2014. It’s not like these live musicals are spectacular productions that become instant classics in pop culture. And…

"Q: Polyester and Hairspray, along with a lot of your films, seem to be really interested in female beauty and in how harassed and tortured we are over it. What is it that makes you want to put drag queens or overweight people or unconventional-looking women in those super-traditional spaces?
W: Because in movies they never got the guy, they never were the heroines, and they never were the glamorous ones. I mean, Divine could play a glamorous woman when he was an overweight man. It’s about throwing the rules into anarchy. And making people consider things they’d never consider before. I think that’s the comedy of all my movies. I don’t judge other people except the people who do judge other people, and don’t know the whole story. So to me, I’m celebrating the freedom to exaggerate what people say is negative about you and turn it into a style, and win. Which all my characters do. I make fun of things I like, not hate, pretty much." (x)
-
"Waters said he liked the Hairspray Live! version that NBC broadcast in 2016 even though he had very little to do with it, but he did have problems with one character.
“I was a little against that they made Motormouth Maybelle skinny with giant Vegas breasts,” he said. “To me, there are millions of giant black women in every church in America that could have sung that song…I’m always against the fat suit, too. That’s the blackface for fat girls.”" (x)
i have read close to no interviews with john waters yet and know little about him outside of his movies. did he ever discuss fatness or how he felt about regularly using fat actors (i assume in every film he did)? it's something i really find refreshing about watching his movies, that fat actors are present and even though not much about his movies is normal their presence is so normalized, it just feels natural. i'm googling rn to see if i find anything on this topic.
#well from what i've read in the last half hour#he says a lot of stuff i agree with and enough i don't agree with#like in general#alvadee's shit
